phantagrae
I was rewatching Rhinitis and I think it is such a subtle, pivotal episode in Shamy's history even though Amy barely appears in it and is barely mentioned. But there are so many subtle hints that kind of turn the page on the pre-Amy Sheldon, I think. So, besides the obvious fact that Mary knows everything there is to know about Sheldon's friends except Amy and sees all of his friends except Amy, indicating that there is something that's brewing in his head that sets them apart from them, and the fact that she asks about Amy and Sheldon looks offended when Leonard makes the Loch Ness monster joke... Mary tells Raj the story of "a key for every lock", about the tall girl who she thought would never find a man until the Harlem Globetrotters showed up in town. Change height for intelligence/quirks, and does it remind you of some other story? Amy is the only one that goes to the lecture with Sheldon and genuinely tries to help him sort out his emotional issues, following which Sheldon ends up on that bench realizing that he is just like everyone else indeed when it comes to emotions. Then you have the last scene, where Mary emphasizes that he's a grown man now and they need to have a different relationship, including that joke on the chest hair that, allegedly, filled up *over the last year* (wonder who entered his life a year prior?). 4 episodes later, Shelly-bean officially pair-bonds. Early S5 is such a gem of subtle continuity. PS Welcome Holly, your avatar puts me in such a good mood! It's going to be a war between yours and Puppy Chow's for the one that cheers me up the most Rhinitis is one of my all-time favorite episodes. I love the implication that Sheldon keeps his mother up-to-date on the goings-on in Pasadena... And I love the shocked/stunned face he gets when she mentions that once upon a time she could be had for a car ride and a bottle of strawberry wine. Makes me wonder if her marriage was of the shot-gun variety... But I do love the sort of push/pull that goes on with Sheldon--wanting his mother's undivided attention and getting anything but until the very end, and then their conversation at the end. She's insisting he's a grown man while he's trying to come up with a way that he can still be a toddler. I do like that Amy pointed out that his superior intellect doesn't exempt him from emotional issues, and perhaps even hampers him. I agree, there's some subtle foundation-laying going on. koops
Sort of OT, but I didn't know where to put it and I think this speaks so much of so many of us ex and current spoiler addicts, while waiting for taping reports. LOL

menamena
Reposting my thoughts on this episode from fanforum: I loved today's episode as a Shamy fan, not just for the obvious reasons [like the mutual ILYs] but the subtle indications of growth of Shamy as a couple. One of the first scenes that stood out to me was how Sheldon actually was able to read Amy’s body-language perfectly in the lab scene and deduce that she was angry. This is naturally growth for Sheldon who has never been good at reading people’s signals… but particularly, the scene showed to me that Sheldon was beginning to get a much deeper understanding of Amy’s emotional cues and signals – a quality that is going to be so beneficial to Shamy in the future. Also, I loved that even when Amy was annoyed, she still introduced Sheldon to her colleagues and communicated with him civilly. These two, IMO, have amazing communication/conflict-resolution skills compared to the other couples. I mean, contrast them with H/B where Howard lied to Bernadette and Bernadette stormed off. Again, it’s a thread the writers are following from the last episode – even though this episode ends with a “perceived” fight between the Shamy, they still managed to communicate their issues beautifully – even if it not perfectly. Then, going to the more obvious scenes, I love the shoulder touch in the cafeteria. One of my main complaints with s06 was that, for all this talk of how Sheldon is maturing as a person and considering physical intimacy with Amy as a possibility – there was no change with regard to how Sheldon behaved with Amy. In this episode not only does Sheldon brag about their physical relationship but he also casually touches her without any hesitation with the shoulder and the kick. In-fact throughout this season there have been indications of Sheldon just being more comfortable with Amy occupying his physical case – the eavesdropping in episode 2, the way he just turned closer towards her at the end of the last episode to speak his mind. Coming to the last scene, I loved it so much. I know the scene frustrated some people because Sheldon did not completely understand his role in Amy’s annoyance… but to me the fact that he finds her a “weirdo” made this scene even better. He does not want to change her, he loves for who she is, quirks and all – He loves Amy, unconditionally – and isn’t that what everyone wants anyway? Moreover, in my opinion, this coming from Sheldon is tantamount to an “I love you”declaration. Also, I guess on a deeper level, what I love about this confession is that Sheldon and Amy clearly see each other for who they are and like/love each other for it. I think the scene highlights for me why Sheldon is perfect for Amy. Before Amy met Sheldon, she had always been surrounded by people who either do not accept her for who she is but instead attack her for being so socially unconventional or people who put conditions on her like her mother. With Sheldon she has that one person who has her back no matter what she does. No matter how irrational she acts with him, Sheldon will always be there for her and still love her. dana1010
I loved this episode! It keeps going more and more into my theory that season 6 was Amy chasing Sheldon and season 7 is Sheldon chasing Amy. I love these two together. For me, they can't go wrong. koops
Besides all the obvious cuteness in this episode, Lio and I have been mulling over that "If you play your cards right, I'll let you drive me by the lot where the busses park at night" line. Now, I'm shamelessly copying-and-pasting what I said on the other forum, but I thought that was one odd line and I wonder whether it's a throwaway or something that will come up again in the future, because: 1) They were leaving work. So it must be around 5-6pm. The lot would therefore be empty. 2) Sheldon hates busses. Even if the lot were full, why on Earth would he care about going there? 3) He made it sound like it was something that she would enjoy. Now, while I think there's no way they are going there to make out (I'd have the shock of a lifetime if we found out that's what's happening off screen with their new 'physical' relationship Sheldon is so excited about), it does make me wonder whether some other kind of odd couple-like activity has been going on there over the summer and whether we will hear again. Is that where they go hug on hot days? Or play D&D in the backseat of the car? Or what? I don't know, but yes, that line totally sounded like he was suggesting they go to a makeout spot and I think it would be hilarious if it turned out to be the case that it is some kind of odd, Shamy-version of a makeout spot. BazingaFan
I'd completely forgotten about that line. Very interesting. Let us all celebrate. Someone make a toast. It was so awesome. HollyAndOatmeal
I took the line as, "If you play your cards right, I'll take you to a certain spot that you *should* be fascinated by, because who wouldn't be fascinated by a lot where buses park at night?" It's totally possible. The thing I found weird about that is that if they meant it to be that, they could have picked something Sheldon actually enjoys, like a train depot, or railway tracks. An empty parking lot for busses (which he hates) seems a bit odd. As the fact that he said "I"ll let you" as if that were something they have done before and enjoyed. So odd. Anyway, I was just going to say, we had one physical touch for every episode with direct Shamy interaction so far this season! LOL! Ear on shoulder, chin touch, shoulder touch. Boy, howdy, is it getting hot in here?

Yeah I thought that too, and now he needs to chase her, and that moth and flame thing is good example, and that he came to her in the night, and in the cafeteria ... I want to see him chasing her, going to her first, even in the night because he will not be able to sleep because of her, and I want to see Amy acting like.. " yeah well I'd been patient with you so long, so now you need to come to me, and you need to try more, I will be there for you and I understand you all the way, and I will support you and you know that I will tell you the truth, because I care about you, and I love you, but now you need to come to me..." AdAstra
Most of the things I was going to say have already been said. Loved the episode! One thing struck me that I haven't seen anyone else mention... right at the beginning, Penny says "nobody's touching... must be date night". Now that could just mean that it's a "Shamy date night" as opposed to a usual date with a couple, who might be touching or doing other "normal" date things. Or it could mean that Sheldon and Amy usually have some kind of physical contact, apart from on date nights. There have been a few small touches between them this season already, so perhaps a little bit of physical contact has become the norm? That would also go along with the hand holding and hugging line. But date nights are more formal so they still have the no contact rule from the original RA? (See also from last season, when Sheldon said date nights were tedious. My theory is he enjoys enjoys the time he spends with Amy, except from when they're on a formal date.) Perhaps I'm overthinking this too much. HollyAndOatmeal
Definitely got the vibe that Penny was having a go at their relationship, and not that physical contact has become the norm for the Shamy. I like your enthusiasm though, Adastra!
AdorkablyMe
I really liked this one! I thought Sheldon explaining how all relationships are difficult was an awesome monologue, and I especially liked the twist at the end when he says he was speaking about Amy, not himself. Hilarious! Catlina
Now I only want see those hot days to come to Pasadena California, that we can see Shamy hugging. If they are hugging on regular basis now, why to mention specifically that they hug even on hot days? Of course he was implicating it happened during the summer. But I thought could it be also that her hugging feels hot or makes him feel so hot (physically or otherwise, lol), so it'll make him feel extra hot on hot days? Or does he think it's awkward to do on hot days since it'll be extra sweaty because of hotness but they'll do it anyway, because he finds it's worth doing it? He'll go for "an extra mile" to hug her on hot days? I wonder what else he experiences when hugging her? Who initiates those hugs and why? How long do they stay hugging each other and how they touch each other? I'm so glad about this single line, that there has been off-screen hugging during the summer between Shamy. I love how he touches her shoulder so easily in the cafeteria. Also, indeed that line about bus parking lot was intriguing.. It was really odd line and I hope they will get back to that. I remembered what parts Amy showed him on university parking lot in 6x9, but I don't mean they referred to it now, it's way too intimate yet. But if it was a hint of some quirky-Shamy- "make out" suggestion, it would be super sweet. Why otherwise he would want to go to large parking place of buses he doesn't even like? What's suddenly so intriguing about bus parking lots? Hmm. But in case he only meant to drive by the parking lot, not to stay there, my confusion is even greater. But I hope we'll hear more about this.
koops
About the hugging (which blatantly took place over the summer), I was going to comment ages ago on this when I got spoiled and forgot. Love how people flipped out over the Shenny hug and then we get a line like this, showing that there's been a whole lot of Shamy hugging going on LOL. I do hope that we will get to see them casually hug soon, like it's no big deal. eta: *VIOLINS* You know what I like about this quote. It's that Sheldon liked Amy as she was in S4, in S5, in S6 and now in S7. She changes, and evolves, and for some things has become very different from the Amy he met and from himself, but he doesn't hold it against her. He even embraces change, if it's about her. BazingaFan
I agree. That photo and quote are amazing and so powerful. Look at the intensity on his face. About the hugging, maybe he said that because she hugged him last season when he was upset over kripke, and also she hugged him when he gave her the tiara. So technically, she has hugged him on more than one occasion, so that's why he said "hugging" along with holding hands? And koops, I agree, you could really read a lot into what he said... that he means her "quirks" are in fact the ways that she has changed since they've met, and he is telling her that he's okay with it.
