The Shamy Thread, Season 7 [Spoiler Free]

Shamynanigans

Very nice post Star. I think it's interesting in 5x23 when the guys are renting suits, Sheldon says, "I look like the Flash about to get married," and he likes it! It makes me think he was already starting to open up to the idea of getting married one day.

So, why did Sheldon try to set Amy up with Zack in the Alien Parasite episode, considering that if she'd gone through with it, it would have probably been too much to bear? She meant a lot to him already, and maybe he just underestimated what it was he was doing? Did he think she'd still be 'his' in the intellectual sense that drew him to her in the first place and didn't realise it was likely to go further than that, probably sooner than he could imagine? I can't imagine that he would have been OK with it really.

That's a good question. I have two explanations. One is that it was in S4, and at that point he hadn't developed any "romantic" or "jealousy" feelings, so as long as she was still with him in the intellectual sense and was still his friend, he didn't care.

My other explanation, and the one I'm more fond of is that he WAS feeling jealousy and he set her up with Zack to cover up his feelings, to prove to her and maybe himself that he didn't care as much as he actually did. Because in that episode, Amy accuses him of feeling jealous, and he leaves the room, all embarrassed and discombobulated. So I think it was fairly obvious he was at least a little bit bothered. :] And of course at the end, when she held his hand, he didn't exactly pull back, did he?

I think deep down inside, Sheldon felt that Amy would not go through with it.  He knew her well by then.  He wanted her happy and knew he was not prepared for such matters himself, even though he cared deeply for her.  Obviously he was most connected intellectually to her, but he had by then developed feelings for her.   I think it may have been a bit of a "test" too.  Was she another "Penny" or would she really save herself for the man she loves.   I know this is all presumption, but Sheldon had really gotten to know Amy pretty well by then.   I think he honestly knew she wouldn't go through with it.  He knew she needed to be with a man that could stimulate her mind just as much as her body.   He knew that Zach was definitely not that man.

A couple of things stick out in that episode.

1)  Notice how sad he looks as she walks over to Zach.   He is hoping he is right.  He is banking that she won't stay.

2)  He doesn't leave immediately.   He stays there and watches.  He knows that if he stays, she will turn around and join him and both will leave together.   Any other man would have walked her to the bar, made sure that the guy was there and she met up and turned and left. But not Sheldon.  He stayed.  Why?  Because he knew she would leave with him and not Zach.

3) He gives Zach the "long live and prosper" hand-sign before leaving.  It almost was as if a victory sign.  It was saying "She's mine, you lost" sort of feel.  I really felt it was a sign of "closure" on the matter.   She was his and belonged to no one else.

4) When they were walking back and she slipped her hand in his, it took him a couple of moments to realize she was holding his hand.  He was so happy she returned with him that he didn't notice the "physical contact" she made with him and then he let her still hold the hand a bit longer.   This was huge for Sheldon because his germ phobia was at an all time high at this point in the show.  He still was very aware of germs all the time.

I loved this show a lot because it really was a turning point for Sheldon (even more than Amy).  He realized he could eventually, one day, get there.  I think this is really the point he began "working on it".  While he may not have shown many signs at this stage, this was a very big first step in that direction.

Im really curios why exacly Sheldon decided that "its a possibility" and that he has not "ruled it out".

If we get away from the possibility that he might acually have sexual desires.

Is it because he wants to reproduce one day, or because he's simply in love with Amy? I think it might be 50/50.. but if it would just be the last one.. does he want it because he loves her and knows that would make her happy? or because his feelings for her acually makes him want that kind of intimacy ?

I think he said 100% because he loves her.

In 4x01 he already talked about creating offspring with Amy when talked with Penny, but he wanted to do it using IVF.

So when he said he hadn't ruled physical intimacy with Amy, it would not have to be about reproducing perse. That having sex with Amy could result in children is something else imho.

About if he would do it just to make her happy, or because he actually wants to, I once again lean to the latter.

Sheldon wouldn't do something like this, just to make her happy. That's a line he wouldn't cross.

Handholding, he did that once onscreen to make her happy, but this is something else entirely I think in his mind.

Wow, thanks, that makes sense. I hadn't appreciated what a big deal and gamble it was for him. I agree with the growth that Amy had to go through in S6 now you mention it too. Nice to see he'd already started meeting her for lunch by the time of Alien Parasite too - even with the risk of leaving with bits of brain!

Also, by the time of the Wolowitz Thanksgiving Dinner, Amy completely ignores Zach when he comes to sign the annulment paperwork - I think we all know she has much better things going on by then.

I may or may not be going through Shamy withdrawls and trying to fill the void with my favorite Shamy episodes. :)

I forgot about the Cooper Coupons and Arman the miniature horse breeder.

I think for me personally, I could see he loved her when he took her hand in the season 5 finale.

That moment was so powerful.

And this moment! Aww I loved it so much! I saw it as a youtube video probably 50 times before I ever saw the episode. Amy's face is just priceless! :)

I was unspoiled for that one.. It was another "Kiss her you fool!" moment :p

Honestly, as a fan, That's when I knew he loved her. that sealed it for me. ^_^

I love reading all these replies! If I was to have a bit of a DVD marathon then, charting the evolution of their relationship, which ones do you recommend I go for?

Also, the whole 'she's not my girlfriend' thing came, I think, out of both Sheldon's somewhat teenage reaction to the situation, with him trying to stop the other guys going on at him about it, and the denial that a lot of people seem to go through with new relationships. He deeply wanted to trust and believe in it, but thought as many do that the moment he started to do that it would all go wrong. He hadn't called her his girlfriend himself by then either, probably not even in his own mind, and what if she said no? He probably knew how much that rejection would hurt, so it was safer to deny it to himself and anyone else and hope she didn't find out there was any chance he could be thinking of her that way. I think there would have been at least one other girl in his past that laughed and/or said no when he'd eventually dared show an interest, and that led to locking down his emotions tighter still. Well, we know his 'break up' with Amy hurt enough to result in 25 cats at least - Leonard was only planning on getting one when he and Penny broke up.

I think too that there were signs Sheldon was lonely and wanted someone special in his life even before they met, as he seems to me to have a bit of a crush on Dr Elizabeth Plimpton (before he finds out what sort of a woman she is) and also appears to notice one of Raj's dates reminds him of an Indian princess from a storybook. He then unwittingly hits on her and it works - she likes him - but by the time he gets home he's clear that it's not worth ever seeing her again - he already has a dentist. The supposed adoration of Ramona worked too, to begin with, but she was all about using his reputation for her own recognition more than anything else.

As for his views on relationships that are coming into question now - they're complicated, but I think he grew up with two very different images. There was his grandparents' happy marriage, which he always wanted (even though you'd never know it), the 'dream', and his parents', the 'reality'. Growing up with that reality made the dream seem unattainable, and he still worries that it is. He doesn't want to make the same mistakes he saw them make, especially not with the woman who could break his heart. Slowly though, he has learned to trust that Amy won't do that, and that he doesn't have to follow the same pattern. I can't wait to see his further progress - long wait here though!

Personally if I'm going to chart the evaolution of their relationship then I'm going to start with the last episode of season 3 and then watch every episode until today. Even the epsiodes that don't have any Shamy in it usually have a significant eye stare, glance, smirk, or mention by Sheldon. For example, I have rarely seen season 4's The Benefactor Factor, because I don't really care for it, but in that episode you learn about Amy's Saudi prince. And in season 7's The Scavanger Vortex, there's no Shamy scenes, but I still get a kick at Sheldon watching Amy dance to Raj's intro music.

Someone else on here, I don't remember who, said that even though there wasn't a lot of Shamy in season 5's The Rhinitis Revelation, it still tells a lot about the Shamy relationship.

If I were just interested in watching interesting Shamy episodes, these are some of the ones I would pick. These are not necessarily my favorite episodes, these are only the episodes I go to when I'm looking for a Shamy fix. :)

Season 4:

The Robotic Manipulation

The Zazzy Substitution

The Desperation Emanation

The Alien Parasite Hypothesis

The Herb Graden Germanation

Season 5:

The Pulled Groin Extrapolation

The Isolation Permutation

The Shiny Trinket Maneuver

The Vacation Solution

The Werewolf Transformation

The Weekend Vortex

The Launch Acceleration

The Countdown Reflection

Seson 6:

The Date Night Variable

The Re-Entry Minimization

The Holographic Excitation

The Parking Spot Escalation

The Fish Guts Displacement

The Cooper/Kripke Inversion

The Spoiler Alert Segmentation

The Tangible Affection Proof

The Tenure Turbulence

The Closure Alternative

The Love Spell Potential

Season 7:

The Deception Verification

The Raiders Minimization

The Workplace Proximity

The Romance Resonance

The Thanksgiving Decoupling

The Discovery Dissipation

The Cooper Extraction

Tbbt really should put together a dvd box with "just shamy" like they have done with all the christmas episodes. I would pay good money for a Shamy-box!

Also, they should put together a Valentines day edition.

I didn't watch the Shamy progression in the order it was played out because I started late and watched random tidbits of their relationship out of order. When I watched him grab her hand at the end of season 5 in a youtube video, it sealed it for me as well. I didn't know a simple hand grab could make me feel so giddy. I think this quote sums up the Shamy very nicely.

DANA 10 : YOU FORGOT 5 X 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMY, WILL YOU BE MY GIRLFRIEND???

NOOOOOO!!!! I'm such a failure! I was bound to miss one or two good ones, but not that one. lol

I blame the Shamy, they distract me. I've been distracted since the moment I saw them cause all I can think about is how much I want them to kiss each other. :) :)

I'm just about to watch Shiny Trinket - don't think I've seen it all the way through, and something struck me. It's probably been mentioned by someone else, but isn't a tiara something often worn by brides (I did)? Is that how Sheldon was subconsciously thinking of Amy at that moment?

Also, I'd be absolutely beside myself with excitement if I was in the US this week - you have got such a good episode coming!

And I would so buy a Shamy V-Day card...has anyone seen any? Not even necessarily for my husband, just for me! There's a site that sells notebooks that look like the Roomate/Relationship Agreements too - I would so love my own copy of the Relationship Agreement for V-Day!

Think he thought of it the same way she did when she got it: tiaras are for princesses. And yes even though brides sometimes wears it aswell I kind of like the thought of Sheldon seeing Amy as his princess a little bit better ;) Edited by Jaime

As much as I love to think Sheldon thought anything about Amy like that, I don't think he did.

I think he was still getting used to the fact she is now his girlfriend (officially that is) and Penny probably reminded him that Girls like jewelry in general.

If it were up to him, he got her a humidifier from Sears.
