Yes, it is beautiful. Great job. When I saw the drawing on tumblr, I was hoping you would post a time lapse video. :)

If you don't mind me asking, what went wrong with the first drafts? What makes drawing Jim/Sheldon difficult?

Thank you, Dana! <3

I attached a photo of all four of my attempts drawing Sheldon. I ended up going with the bottom-right. I think the only good explanation I have (other than it just simply doesn't look right! :p) for why the first three drafts didn't work out is that first of all I wasn't getting the individual features quite right (the chin was too large - Jim has a face that becomes very narrow at the bottom, the eyes were too small or too squinty or otherwise just not shaped correctly in some way, the mouth wasn't quite right and neither was the arch of his eyebrows) but secondly, the individual features didn't work in relation to each other. I had a lot of trouble with making his eyes too low on his face, as well as getting the distance between his eyes and eyebrows correct. The relations of everything together is so important and usually what makes or breaks a portrait, no matter how well an eye or mouth or nose is rendered.

I'm not really sure why he's difficult to draw. My only guess is that he has very distinct and very recognizable features. I also think there's a tendency to exaggerate him. A lot of times I had to check myself to not overdo the arch in his eyebrows or the shape of his eyes or the thickness or thinness of his lips. You know, it's really difficult (for me, anyway) to overcome the very insistent urge to draw things the way you think they look rather than the way they actually look in the photo you're referencing. I have to tell myself to stop drawing an eye or a mouth or whatever and train myself to only see value and contour and how it all relates together. Instead of focusing on the fact I'm drawing a mouth, I focus on the shape. You know, the angle of each line and how much it curves, how thick or long. And how much darker or lighter is this shape compared to this other shape.

Another explanation (because it took me around 4 hours to get his face the way I wanted it, while it took about 1 hour to get Amy's face right) is that I've drawn Mayim several times before from the front. And every time I've drawn Sheldon it was profile or he had his eyes closed or he was looking down. :p

But yeah. I mainly just focus really hard on trying to draw exactly what I see. One of the most frustrating things is looking back and forth from drawing to the reference photo and seeing that the drawing is wrong but you're not sure exactly how.

And I really just wanted to get his face and the expression perfect (it's still not perfect but it's the closest I'll get, haha). It's just a subtle smile on his face as he says "thank you", but it, along with Amy's smile, is what first sold me on Shamy.

Thanks for asking. :) Sorry for writing an essay, haha.

Maddie, it's really interesting to see the comparisons of the different attempts. It always amazes me how much detail goes into drawing something like that. I think you got the smiles perfectly and I agree their smiles in that scene are what make it so special. I could ask a dozen questions about your drawing but I don't want to annoy you. I will say that I love the detail that you put into it. It's cool that you can see the shadows on their faces from their hair and how Sheldon's shirt is crunched up a bit. I cannot draw very well and my skill level is probably a step below from Kazzie's amazing drawing of Sheldon for the Christmas episode.  Keep drawing. You are very talented at it and if you love it you should keep doing it. :)

Oh my goodness, thank you! That's such a huge compliment and what makes devoting hours to these things worth it! And don't worry, you could never annoy me, haha.

Thank you so much to all you guys who compliment my work. <3 <3 I always feel a little awkward and exposed when I share it, but everyone in this fandom especially has been so nice.

Amazing again Maddie.

It's the expressions that get me. You capture them so well.

I still think you should try selling prints of your work. Have a look on Etsy and Artist's Directory. You're definitely up to standard.

Thank you! :) I really appreciate that. I've never sold my art before. Even when people wanted to pay me, I couldn't accept. But I'm warming up to the idea! So would I be selling the actual piece of work or do I make several prints of it to sell? Sorry if that's a dumb question. :p

Our friend, who sells on Artist's Directory, puts his original on and sells signed numbered prints (he limits, usually no more than 500 prints per artwork) which he prints off and signs as demand merits. He does commissions too when requested.

My husband bought a gorgeous illustration off EBay recently too. And I wonder if Amazon do the same. I bet they do. :)

Looking at what's on Etsy, I can see there being an interest in your stuff.

Thanks for the info! With your encouragement, I will most definitely consider it and look into it more. Thanks again. :)

Maddie, how many moments do you plan on drawing? Have you thought about what next moment you will draw?

I'm sure it will end up being quite a few, because there's so many moments that I love, and I can't seem to let anyone of them go. :p But the next one I'm planning on doing is from the zazzy episode ("by any standard, Amy is more similar to me than anyone I've ever met"), and then after that I think I'll do the infamous foyer scene where Amy says romantic love is illogical and all that jazz, haha.

They're time-consuming and can be frustrating, but I enjoy drawing these two more than anyone else. And hey, more practice is never a bad thing. :)

Sharing the final version of the video that gave me nightmare in every way imaginable:

The Big Bang Theory - Amy "breaks up" with Sheldon (The Commitment Determination - season 8 finale)

Basically this video was told from Sheldon's perspective. I will wait for Season 9 to upload another one based on Amy's perspective. I already have a video concept once Sheldon and Amy gets married, and I hope people will find it romantic as well.

Wonderfully done. I love the bookends of the video and how it ends with the bookends of the finale episode itself.

Looking forward to seeing another one.
