Leonard And Penny Season 7 *spoiler* Discussion Thread

He's also accepted deliveries, paid her rent, several other of her bills, at one time or another. So, her name had to be on something. Any magazines he's accepted would have had her name on it also.

Hey, Penny, I got your mail today and there was this envelope from some law firm, who is Penny Johnson?

Exactly. It stretches suspension of disbelief beyond the breaking point to think that her last name wouldn't be on anything that was ever delivered to her apartment.

I agree.  It is just another reason that I find all of this suspect.  If the writers are going in this direction, IMO it has poorly thought through.

Hmmm. If she is/was drunk married, any motivation to break up could only come from Leonard as there are no third parties actually in the game. Is Leonard the guy who would do that for what would essentially be prideful reasons, when all the signs are that he and Penny are mutually deeply in love? Or would Penny toss away what she recognised finally? I'm guessin' it's just a bigger speed bump. Wait and see.

But if she is married, that is a big relationship problem, and if she has been married for 4 years, she needs to get it straightened out. I would not be happy if I was Leonard and would take a break until she was legally available. Think about it, technically she has been cheating on her husband with Leonard.

If she did not know she had gotten married, she would never have legally changed her name to Johnson (hell even if she knew and was hiding the marriage, she still wouldn't have changed her name legally).  So her mail would have her true last name, which of course all of her friends know, even if they don't reveal it to the audience.  If you don't interpret Tomasina's comment literally, it just means her last name the last few years was technically Johnson, just not legally.

Hmmmmmmm, I wonder if the "Decoupling" is Penny getting the situation straightened out? We'll know shortly.

This is like the twilight zone......

But this isn't something she had done in the present. This is something that happened before they were dating, before she really started to grow up. He'll be upset but I don't think he'll be mad at her for too long. He has no reason to believe that currently she doesn't love him or would want to upset him. If Penny's only just worked out Johnson is her surname then I don't think she's been hiding something from him purposefully. And he'll be upset but I don't think he's going to be all "omg I can't do this wah go sort yourself out" because… she has. This is her past affecting her present, and in the present she has grown up and is learning to deal with her cray-cray past.

I think what is bothering me is it will look like Leonard has been sleeping with a married woman (Penny) and I don't like the thought of this due to how Leonard came clean with Priya about Alice. I don't want Leonard caught in some crap like this.

Marriage is just a contract, not what's in your heart.

That is a frightening thought.  I would hope that most often (ignoring this story here) that people enter into a marriage because of what is in their heart and it is far more than a contract, but a true vow.    Now I realize that isn't what you meant by this statement, and that you were saying that in her case it was a piece of paper and not a heart-driven thing.   However, marriage should be a true commitment.   Taking your comment to the argument with Lenny in this case, if Penny were to say exactly what you said to Leonard, I can see where he would be afraid to have a commitment with her in that case.  How would he know she was just getting a piece of paper with him down the road or that it was a true vow?   I guess I don't agree with your comment.  I get what you were trying to imply, but marriage should never be treated nonchalantly and so casually.   For the purposes of this story, I don't even think it was then. I suspect it was more because they had no idea they were marrying so they didn't realize it was even being a vow they were giving each other.   In that case, it is just a piece of paper, but then it needs to be clear that there is a difference in believing that an "under the influence" ceremony is not a true marriage in the first place instead of making a comment that it is just a piece of paper.   Get what I am saying?   Leonard needs to know that when Penny does finally propose that it is because she is truly, truly committing to him and with a comment tossed out like yours, he would never know that.

It's not as if she's really married if it was a one-night, drunken Vegas wedding or something.

If either of them knew she was married and then they were sleeping together, then, yeah, it would be wrong, but neither of them knew--and obviously, from Tomasina's hints, Penny didn't know--then how is Leonard getting caught in "crap"?

I'm sure it's going to be some farcical conundrum, not that Penny was hiding some secret marriage from him, etc.

As others have said, if she had this drunken wedding, then somewhere on some piece of paper she has a married name of Johnson, but if she didn't remember the wedding, then she would never have gotten her name legally changed, so none of the gang, including her, would have known.

I'm betting she gets some kind of legal notice or something--maybe even a document about an impending annulment or something like that.  I really doubt it's going to be something serious that they'll break up over.

Hey, I've slept with a married women, it was fine.

... hang on, I was there at the marriage - and up the front too. Maybe my andecdote is irrelevant.

I can live with it...better that she thought it wasn't real than just another drunken screw-up.

Of course I'll wait to read the rest before I'm totally ok with it.

I don't disagree.  I'm just tired of the extra-stupid Penny bit they like to go to sometimes.  It is reminiscent of the Prof. Proton episode and plugging his pacemaker into the potato comment.

Why does that make her 'stupid'? If someone had told me before that you can plug an alarm clock into a potato I would have been like 'no effen way!' and probably thought the same about a pacemaker. Not knowing stuff doesn't make Penny stupid.

Some discussion of when this happened. I think probably the thanksgiving before the new years eve costume party.

I admit I am not an expert on season 4, she was drunk a lot then.....

Edit: [thanksgiving] That was right around the night of the slumber party.....

I'm waiting to see if it's four years. Four years ago would put the trip in the year that Penny and Leonard were dating. Season four Thanksgiving would be between The Boyfriend Complexity and The Alien Parasite Hypothesis. It would be surprising that Penny didn't introduce Zack as the guy she went to Vegas with the week before.

If it's not season four, then it would have to be either season 1-2 before Penny and Leonard started dating or in season 5 between The Flaming Spittoon and The Speckerman Recurrence. Although, it would be two weeks after The Ornithophobia Diffusion.

I guess she could have ran off to Vegas in Season 6, you know, the week after she told Leonard she loved him. ;)

How can someone be 'Street Smart' and not know she was getting married. This seems so forced. Bring Alex back and Penny can cry in her wine over that, then when she sleeps with someone drunk, she can tell Leonard she though her big pregnant baby bump was fake too. But Leonard will understand since he is there for her to wipe her shoes on. Yes, I'm not happy.
