I'm not really happy with this, but I think TW has hit the reason for Penny behavior so far. She mad and upset at herself, knows it's her fault, doesn't know how to fix the whole thing (annulment, placating Leonard, apologizing, etc) and she is lashing out. It's a very common defense mechanism.

I have to say I went back and looked at Penny's reaction to Leonard's proposing during sex and it makes even less sense to me now.  Penny was so over the top and held Leonard at arms length for a good while and even though of breaking up with him.  Let Penny had no problem or second thought of going to a wedding chapel with Zack and ended up marrying him.

 

Now she is getting mad at Leonard for being upset and some are already saying he needs to back off and leave it alone.  Some how Leonard is always darn if he does and darn if he doesn't.

Part of the problem too is that it seems they have been together with Shamy and the others since the episode started. There's really been no chance to talk to each other about it.

Well I am tired of Penny lashing out at Leonard, he didn't create the problem and he has the right to be upset after all the crap she has given him over proposing to her.

The situations are totally different. His proposal during sex was just the two of them. This "marriage" talk had an audience. I think Penny knows she is wrong but needs a way to fix it.

I think Leonard and Penny really need to talk through it together though, Penny obviousley is feeling embarassed and stupid, and not sure what to do to make it better, she knows Leonard is hurting. So I dont think she is lashing out at Leonard its more a defense mechanism, Leonard needs to tell Penny its not okay like last year in the VD ep, then Penny well compromise more. 

 

This is a chance for Leonard to step up, like in The Middle Earth Paradigm. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Leonard has shown a ton of assertiveness and has stepped up a lot since the VD ep last year, but thats just me.

Step up how? By telling Penny it's okay and she is still prefect to him, while getting walked on again and again by Penny for some perceived sin he committed.

 

 

Know some won't like what I have to say but someone has to stand up for Leonard in this situation.

Because Leonard's proposal actually meant something to her. Of course she's going to freak out. Like, that's not what you expect to hear in bed from your boyfriend with whom you're giving the whole 'relationship' idea a real proper genuine shot. With Zack it was just for fun, something she thought was fake and meaningless. 

 

The timeline can be varied, there's no exact date she married him, I would guess pre Leonard's return from the North Pole. She just didn't wanna be alone on Thanksgiving.

Difference is what Penny did had nothing to do with Leonard at that point of time, I agree though Penny needs to be aware of Leonard, but at the same time she never meant to hurt Leonard it was a stupid thing, that she diddnt even think twice of because she was under the pretense that it was not a real wedding, so I can see why and understand that she is probably the most shocked one. Where as with Leonard she is in love with him, and a proposal from him is meaningfull and real, vegas was a stupid big mistake, she choose Leonard with all the information at hand. So I get sticking up for Leonard, Penny has put him through a lot, but I never thought it was directly anything to do with Leonard himself.

Not exactly. More along the lines of "I know you aren't perfect, but  I understand you and I love you and we will get through this"

 

Amy just showed him the way with Sheldon and his "mistake" .

It's never right, but that's why it's a handy defense mechanism. You take out your frustration at yourself on someone else, and don't get hurt.

I said this before Lenny are in such a good place right now I beleive they could get through anything. And yeah its not right but when your using a defense mechanism, it usually means your trying to diminish the possiblity of getting hurt, and Leonard is the one person she knows well never hurt her, so she lashes out almost as a sounding board.

The problem is Penny is definitely embarrassed and shocked about this development and she is having a difficult time handling it. Leonard is understandably upset about this, after all his girlfriend is technically married. Penny needs to understand that it is a big deal. Let's see how the episode ends.

This is why it's unconditional love. Because if they do something that makes them hate themselves/each other or they hit a massive bump, they're still going to love each other and work through it because they want to be with each other, and accept whatever crap that comes along with.

Maybe in a twisted the way this is the writers showing continuity, the VD ep Penny behaved terribly, but they talked it through and were stronger as a consequence. In a weird way this may make their relationship stronger, it well take a while to get their, and dont get me wrong still in a state of shock, although its weared off a bit because of the context, its not as bad as first thought, its still bad dont get me wrong and I am still not happy but it could have been worser.

I agree she brought it up. But she brought it up in front of Sheldon and Amy and stupidly as it may seem she didn't know she was married. I can't predict what she would say to him in private. She didn't clam up in the valentine's episode last year though. Ironically your favorite Sheldon was the one giving her the hard time about it.

Im not worried. Just sad she was sooooooooo silly. And I think that it might take a bit of effort from Penny to get through this. Leonard will forgive and Penny will feel remorse and they will end up tighter.

I couldn't believe I actually agree with Sheldon on something.  He stated how I feel about this situation and how Penny treated Leonard after he proposed to her.  She did crush him like an insignificant insect and became very standoffish with Leonard and even question if she should dump him again.
