Leonard And Penny Season 7 *spoiler* Discussion Thread

Wow, I missed that, you are so right.  She hid that movie from them all for so long, and now Sheldon is the one she tells, not the boyfriend she loves, that really sucks.  You are so right, Leonard has to beg her to talk and yet she tell her darkest secret to Sheldon.

Sheldon and Penny can say anything to each other because it does not effect their relationship in the least. They can call each other the vilest of names or get angry without consequence since those are the parameters of their relationship, neither wants any more from the other then what they have now.

Leonard and Penny are preparing a life together. Both are insecure about the other and anything that they say or do is very meaningful to their future. They proceed with such great caution for fear of setting off their mutual emotional land mines.  They are so tightly bonded now, any accidental verbal misstep can cause an explosion, especially from Penny.

Penny expects Leonard to nurture her or as she calls it, "make her happy". This is something apparently no man has ever done for her before. Leonard listens to her Cheesecake Factory stories and declares her a hero. He encourages her dreams of becoming a movie star, when he knows that is probably impossible. He is eager to support her academic endeavors (maybe too much so) and gives her positive feed back on anything that she accomplishes, which isn't much. Penny loves being up on that pedestal that Leonard has her on and is always afraid something will happen to threaten her position. She is not going to say anything that will make her seem unworthy of his adoration.

It's somewhat odd that Penny would confide a secret of such magnitude to Sheldon instead of Bernadette (who may already know) but the writers were obviously trying to show how the two of them were supporting each other over missing Leonard, who is the most important person in their daily lives. But Penny has done this before, the season 2 premiere,  when she is afraid to tell Leonard something about her life for fear he would think less of her.

Penny confides in Sheldon the same way she would with her teddy bear, their is no difference or well make any impact on her decisions. Almost just a way to vent and knowing she has the security Sheldon doesen't care either way. With Leonard tho like above said she values his opinion, she doesen't want anything to change between them, she did this in S2 premeire she confided in Sheldon knowing he most likely wont spill to Leonard, she was worried Leonard well think less of her because of Leonard's education. Penny has always felt insecure about her relationship with Leonard, almost like shes not good enough for him, irony is Leonard feels the same way.

I simply refuse to get upset until I see it.  I did that several times last year, was very upset at the taping report, and it turned out not to be a problem.   I see several potential problems, but until it airs, I'm not going to get upset again.

This is the way to deal with this.

TBBT has a pattern of throwing out these bombs to stir up the fans and it always seems worst in the taping reports than when we see the final edit.

I don't think doing a topless movie is her darkest secret, and telling Sheldon, it's not the biggest deal, because he won't see the significance of it in the same way Leonard would - he's seen her topless, he tells Amy 'don't just stand there, take your breasts out' - but he doesn't really see the same things most other guys would see in that. And would she really want to tell the man she loves, 'by the way once I did a topless film' - I doubt it's her proudest moment. He's not showing people personal videos and photos of her. If I did a topless film I wouldn't really want to tell guys either, but if they found it and saw it, I'm the one who done it, so even if I disliked it they still have the liberty to watch it. That's how I see it anyway!

I am with you Army Girl, and while others may think we over react, they are wrong/ It is not over reaction, it's passion (about TBBT)

No, some of you are overreacting. Overreacting and passion are two different things. I'm not overreacting about a scene i havent even seen aired yet, so does that mean im not as passionate about this show as you are?

And this, i was going to come on here and say something like this. You beat me to it. :p So, ill just say yes to this! And add maybe that this movie that she was topless in, wasnt a sleazy movie. She was in the shower, apparently for some slasher type film that just didn't make it to air. It's not like she done some porno, Leonard found it and decided to show it to everyone. He's showing off his hot girlfriend with a scene from the only movie Penny ever did and she just happens to be in the shower. I have faith in the writers that in the scene he is showing there is nothing explicit. That would be wrong, otherwise, i dont see the big problem.

Hi Terrible and welcome to the forum.

It's not about the movie, it's not so much that Penny constantly tell Sheldon things she won't tell Leonard.  For me it feels like the writers are telling us the viewers that Penny really doesn't trust or give Leonard the benefit of the doubt of how he would react upon hearing things she did before they met. I mean it was Wyatt that told Leonard about most of her losers boyfriends, her during weed, her thinking she was pregnant and so on.  Penny will share stupid things with Leonard that aren't important about her but never anything that helped shape who she is.

I have tried to think of one thing of importance that Penny has shared with Leonard about her or things she done in her life before they met and I realize I can't think of one thing (if someone can please feel free to post it).  I know some will bring up the psychic thing, I don't see that as being something that big.

If the bond is that strong between Leonard and Penny then Penny should have no problem with sharing and talking to Leonard about these things - that is how we grow in a relationship and become stronger as a team.

I have a real feeling that this isnt what the writers were trying to tell us. The writers are writing a comedy and were trying to be funny. They set up the topless movie thing, for the tag ending and the laughs. If you want to look at it deeper, she was sharing something with Sheldon... Bonding with him while she dealt with the absence of Leonard and not having him around to talk to.

I dont recall a scene where Wyatt sat down and poured out all of this stuff that Leonard didn't know. I remember one where he shouted all of this stuff at Penny, with no reaction from Leonard. Nothing in that episode said he didn't already know. You are just assuming that he didn't. As for the loser boyfriends. He met Kurt and Mike. He knew about that.

This is a comedy. We arent going to see even the half of the things that Leonard knows about Penny and vice versa. And i wouldn't want to watch the show if it was like that. Yes, every now and again she shares something with Sheldon, that doesnt mean she values him more than Leonard. Its more than likely just easier to ask or tell him this stuff, because its Sheldon. He couldn't really care less about whatever she had to say anyway.

I get that, but think about it. Would you want to admit that kind of stuff? If you've done things from your past that you aren't proud of, even if you know the person won't tell isn't going to judge you for it or let it cloud their judgement of you, you just don't want to say it. I do it. Everyone has things like that - you know people won't judge you for what you did in the past, but you don't want to say it because you're just not proud of yourself for doing it.

She's told him that she is passionate about him, I think for her the important things are showing she's different now and growing up - taking her college class, telling him she loves him, not running when he told her she has to propose - for her, those are big steps and important to her, and they matter to her. Howard never told Bernadette about all the things he done and she found out from the bachelor party video - but like he said, that's his past, he's different now.

In all fairness, what Wyatt "revealed" to Leonard hardly qualifies as surprising.

Penny smoke pot in high school ? Like at least a quarter of all Americans.

Penny got a pregnancy scare ? Again, hardly an oddity in a sexually active young woman's life. Furthermore, she got said scare when in high school. Pardon my cynicism but teens are not always particularly bright when it comes to their own biology. I still remember with great fondness a high school friend who thought she might be pregnant as a result of... Well, let's just say there was no way she could have got pregnant from what she had done. Still, and in spite of repeated explanations as to how and why there was no need for it, she took a test !

Penny appeared topless in a movie ? I highly doubt it is going to make anybody reach for their smelling salts. Again, I understand that she is not proud of it and would prefer people she loves not to know but it is hardly the shocker of the century. If anything, her being so ashamed of this movie seems somewhat similar to her rather explosive reaction to Sheldon's "chew toy" discovery. Is there anything wrong or inherently shameful about owning a vibrator ? Nope. Yet, Penny got all flustered. That's just who she is : part Mae West, part Doris Day.

I suspect those events did not shape Penny anymore than "saving the day" by having somebody else perform the Heimlich manoeuvre on a choking patron did.

I have tried to think of one thing of importance that Penny has shared with Leonard about her or things she done in her life before they met and I realize I can't think of one thing (if someone can please feel free to post it).  I know some will bring up the psychic thing, I don't see that as being something that big.

While I believe I understand what you are saying, I am not sure I see what "big" things you might have in mind.

Penny is 27-ish, unmarried, childless, she comes from a rather normal background (if we exclude the "freelance chemist" brother) and has a pretty mundane everyday job. I am not sure she has had the time and/or opportunity to have "big" things happen to her.

As a matter of fact, I am not sure that many people have.

So far, she has had a fairly normal existence. So have the other characters (with the possibly exception of Howard who experienced the departure of his father and a trip into space). Theirs are lives made of little details and this is what matters ultimately.

It was really hard to explain everything in the report. However, Penny was really wanting to "talk" because she was missing Leonard. She asked Sheldon to share secrets, and he didn't quite get it. That is when she told him about the topless SCENE in the movie. So he would understand what a real secret was. :) I personally thought it was he need to "talk" with someone because Leonard and Bernie were away.

I think the humour does not come across in the report because it was just a re-telling of the basic events that happened. It was impossible to remember all the jokes and exactly how everything played out.

You done great with the report! Especially for the first time and I'm sure you know we all really appreciate it. Sometimes people just home in on one point and take it to extremes. I really believe this episode will be good. If you found it funny and didnt see anything offensive by it, then I'm confident most of the rest of us will too :)

Thank you again.

thank you for the report! from what you've said i think it will be a great episode, obviously you can't show the humour you saw during the taping when you write it, and we'll see it when we see it :) thanks for all the clarifications of things like on the hug, and penny getting them to 'talk' - i like that you think she needed to talk to someone because leonard and bernie were away, she's got used to having them around to help her! :)

Penny has major trust issues when it comes to relationships. You have to remember the journey her character is on - learning to open up with Leonard and not fearing

how he reacts to news (same goes for Leonard some times). The way I look at that scene is merely Penny using Sheldon as a sounding board to gauge the kind of

reaction that Leonard might have to that news (Sheldon does care about Leonard in a Sheldon kind of way). I think Penny has much bigger secrets to spill to Leonard in the coming seasons.

It's all about getting Penny to the point when she can ask Leonard to marry her. Topless movie ? One drama for Lenny to overcome before

bigger revelations at whatever pace the writers decide to spill them. I doubt it's Penny's darkest secret, far from it.

Basically keep an open mind about the episode, and judge it on it's merits. That's my rule for all shows.

Good advice, would save a lot of angst on here.

And I like BangerMain's choice of phrase, "Leonard and Penny are preparing a life together."

The only thing that really bothers me about Leonard viewing the Penny topless movie with his shipmates is more from a technical writing angle. If Leonard is the one who shows the movie to his new friends, why did the writers select this way for Leonard to display Penny to those who do not know her?

So Leonard is on a boat on the North Sea, he is proud of his super hot girl friend and wants to show her off. These are his options:

1. Smart Phone. We know from "Bakersfield" that Leonard takes "Selfies" with him kissing Penny (with a newspaper as proof of date). His smartphone should be filled with Penny pictures, including some with him kissing her. That would be proof enough. Counter: Leonard left his cell phone at home cause he could not get a signal out at sea.

2. Tablet. This would have tons of Penny pictures and videos in beautiful High Definition. Counter: Leonard did not bring his because the boat does not have WiFi.

3. Laptop. Gigabytes of Penny pictures and videos and very likely something Leonard would need since it would be loaded with the software he uses for document creation and research analysis. Counter: The Hawking grant provides him with a new laptop and tells him they want his data in their approved format.

4. Internet access. Apparently, Leonard and crew are looking at the Penny topless video from an Internet site. But that means Leonard has access to say, a Facebook page which we know he has and we would expect it to be a veritable shrine to Penny. Counter: Leonard has no appropriate digital images of Penny anywhere in the web space that he controls.

5. Wallet photo. Let's go old school. There still is available the process to take an image and put it on glossy paper that you can carry around on your person. Counter: He does not have photos since everything is on digital media. (Oh, I forgot, he does not have any digital images of Penny. :icon_rolleyes: )

Unless all these counters are, eh, accounted for, Leonard is a dummy or sleaze of major proportion. Penny is not some bimbo he is banging for kicks, She is the woman he is desperate to marry and have as the mother of his "Smart and Beautiful" babies. Is this how such a man would present said woman to an eminent group of fellow scientist? What would they think of her, since they know of none of her positive qualities? And just as important, what would they think of him doing such a thing to a woman who is supposedly the most important woman in his life? He should know she does not want this widely known since she has kept this as a secret from him.

I hope the writers have thought this through. They like to present challenges to the gang in season premieres, then resolve them during the season. But this is going to take some major explaining unless they plan on doing some serious damage to the prime canon couple.

Or maybe they were sloppy drunk when they came up with this idea. :icon_lol:

William of Occam says "dummy". Leonard has in six seasons never been sleazy, but often dumb. The question also is will it ever matter? Unless it comes back to haunt him at a congress, when the two are in company together and someone else brings it up. The worst case was played out in "Pretty Woman", where the character played by Jason Alexander called out Julia Roberts' character as a hooker. In this case Penny could be called out as an actress. No longer are the two terms synonymous.

Also my personal value judgement is that Penny should own the moment, and acknowledge the event happened when Leonard returns. Much healthier, all around, as she has little to be ashamed of. She and Leonard should get this out in the open, because she feels guilty ABOUT NOTHING OF CONSEQUENCE TO LEONARD. He knows about this. They walked past Raj/Penny, after all (unless they resurrect that, three years later).

It's not a sex tape, and I doubt it's porn. It might have been a tiny film that went straight to DVD. (But hopefully she destroyed David Underhill's phone, before the files went up to the cloud server). :)

David Underhill's phone has the real goods as does her season 1 boyfriend, Mike, who blogged (without photos we hope) of Penny's penchant for sex in odd places. And of course, her Space Mountain rides at Disneyland that she admitted to in season 6. She has a lot of records to destroy. :icon_wink:

The best way for the writers to back out of this is to declare it no big deal to Penny and Leonard. That's a pretty sloppy writing exit but this was a pretty sloppy writing setup to begin with.

I don't think it was certain that Leonard showed the actual scene where Penny is topless, it is just revealed he shows a movie with Penny topless in it, who knows he may skip the topless scene in respect to his GF, we don't know. It is just a taping report won't know anything for sure till the actual premiere. Only think that puzzles me is the writers take on this, he is on a boat in the middle of no where I am assuming, how did he have access to Wi Fi, yeah I know you can have Wi Fi on the go, just did he have it on his IPad or Tablet I am assuming? Did they all gather around to watch Leonard's hot GF take a shower in a movie, considering this is well before they met. Does Leonard feel the need for validation from his peers from people he well most likely never meet again, or maybe they were just surfing youtube and came across the movie, and Penny showed up and Leonard considering he is not lupid "Hey that's my girlfriend!" "Yeah right" "It is!" haha. Another thing that confuses me is why would he keep the fact he knew about the video for so many years, and why would the writers only now decide to bring it up, it has no relevance to the current place the characters are currently in, I get Leonard wasen't in a lupid state of mind, I mean consider the context he is at the end of his trip obviousley drinking alot with his peers, and they come across the movie and Leonard proclaims hey thats my girlfriend! He obviousley got carried away in the circumstances, this is no where a reflection of how he perceives Penny on a general every day basis, I mean come on give the guy the benefit of the doubt, for 7 years he has always cared for and prioritized everything around Penny, he screwed up if he did screw up once give the guy a break, he may of not even remember it till Penny may bring it up. Penny: "So I hear your sharing my boobies with all castmates?" Leonard: "Just one scene" Penny: "OMG I cannot beleive you would do that that was private, I don't want random nobody's oogling at me, I feel violated" Leonard: "Oh come on babe it was just one second, and we were partying, it's not like I show it to guys at the university or anything ;)" Penny: "OMG your thinking of showing it to guys at the university?!" Leonard: "Kidding look I am sorry I guess I enjoyed myself to much, I'm just proud of you so I guess I wanted to show you off Penny: That's sweet, no I'm still angry at you! *Then they make up* haha so no big deal.

The ship would have a broadband link through a satellite. Experiments such as that would have to have access to other data, other references, to allow for running it. They may have a link for phone, or they could have satellite phones. High level experiments, with backers such as Hawking would have big time data links, including links to the Internet. Depending on how and when the experiment was running, they may or may not place limits on Internet usage.

Digital privacy is dead, which I think they are alluding to. None of these guys are millenials. We would have to have the writers from "Skins" to get the drum on the C21 attitude. :)

Hi, I'm new to the forum. Just caught up with the show and can't wait for season 7.

I actually loved the taping report and was happy with everything that was said, so I was kinda surprised that most people are unhappy with it. Going on season 7, the thing that I wanted the most was seeing Penny miss Leonard. Even though by the end of season 6 things were more balanced out between Leonard and Penny, I still feel the ball is in her court and that she has to prove how committed to this relationship she really is. So, I love that she's missing Leonard terribly. That shows how much she truly loves him and how much she needs him.

I love that she also bonds with Sheldon over them both missing Leonard. I love her relationship with Sheldon. She's like a mother/older sister to him who has helped him humanize him more over the years. The most touching moments of the show are often the ones where Sheldon shows affection towards anyone, and that all started with Penny. She makes him less of a robot and teaches him affection, by nurturing him and being his mother away from home. There's absolutely nothing romantic about it (I didn't even know some people shipped them) and the writers have said so as much, so whatever affection is shown between them is in no way a threat to Penny and Leonard's relationship or any other romantic relationship on the show. So, I love that they hug in the premiere. I love that Sheldon admits that she hurt his feelings. Robotic Sheldon has feelings! That's growth and I love that Penny is a reason of that growth. Before knowing Penny, Sheldon would never in a million years hug anyone. And this is the charm of the show. How the nerds are affected by the hot girl next door and vice versa.

As for the topless movie, I really didn't see it as a big deal and I doubt it will ever be brought up again. It was just a scene in a movie. It's not a porn movie or a sex tape. Most successful actresses have done it. Do you really think Kate Winslet's husband or Meryl Streep's husband are forbidding everyone to watch the movies where they appeared topless? No, they're proud of them and of the work they've done. It's an artistic choice. I actually think the point of the last scene was to show that contrary to what was implied by the the first scenes of Leonard partying and sounding dismissive on the phone with Penny, he is actually thinking about her and is missing her, so much that he thought about rewatching her movie.

Also, I really don't think this is Penny's big dark secret and that she's awful for not sharing it with Leonard first. It was just something juicy enough about her past that she remembered to tell Sheldon to get him to spill something personal about him so she could be entertained and not think about Leonard and how much she misses him. Yeah, she's probably embarrassed about it now because it was a risk she took that never paid off, but I don't think it says anything about her relationship with Leonard or that Leonard is a creep for seeing the movie with other people. I think the whole thing was just done for comedic purposes.

I do wonder how the writers will deal with the situation and how much damage will be done all due to their lazy writing.  I wish Lenny would get some of that special treatment they love to shower on Shamy for once.  I hate to say this, but this won't be the last time they will get lazy where Lenny is concerned, it's their go to when they don't want to put in time and effect on the relationship.

I think they give the Leonard and Penny relationship a lot of effort and 'special treatment'. Especially this season where there have been many wonderful moments. Like, they even brought Leonard's cello back, that could have easily been forgotten about, it was cute and unexpected. Little things like that. Maybe it seems to some people that Shamy get more love from the writers but the two relationships are completely different - some people would say Shamy get less. I think both relationships, and Howadette, get a lot of effort and many things to work with - I really don't think the writers are being lazy or sloppy at all here. It's not very nice to accuse them of that, you can tell from interviews how much they care about the characters they have created and write.

Sheldon did the Math that Penny had 130 sexual partners. The Original Penny character was suppose to be a very street wise person and the total opposite of the Nerds.  Many people feel Penny's sexuality is the only thing going for her, so why not exploit it???

BTW I was quite shocked at Jennifer Aniston's role in ""THE MILLER"". Her character was a Stripper and she did several Pole Dances. FYI she looked to be 24 not 44 when Pole dancing. Maybe Hollywood's new trend is sleaze.

Other than BBT, Kaley's commercials etc are anything but sexy. She is bundled up almost like Amy in both Toyota & Price Line Commercials.

A quick correction. Sheldon calculated Penny dated 191 men since the age of 14, but number of sexual partners at 31 (rounded). It can be shown that some of Sheldon's assumptions, to get to those numbers are wrong. Amy claimed 128 sexual encounters based on experiments with electrodes attached to her brain.

Yeah, agree with you here.
