Leonard And Penny Season 7 *spoiler* Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

You make some good points, because when I think of it Leonard and Penny have a better relationship then some married people I know.

I'm beginning to think that the Leonard and Penny plot is revolving around her not feeling successful enough for Leonard, there seems to be hints of this every season.  Latest is she feels like a failure and now needs to devote more effort to pursue her dream, so she quits TCF.  She doesn't get it yet that Leonard loves her for who she is and would help try to get her dreams, even if she was married to him, because he just wants to make her happy.  I am not going to be surprised if they move in together because of her lack of income, the thing is will she understand that he just wants her to make it and is not trying to be her "Sugar Daddy".

What i think, and excuse me if this comes off rude but its something that has bothered me on this thread for so long, is that maybe some people should stop focusing on just Leonard in this relationship and continue to put all the fauts on Penny. Maybe try and see Penny's side to things and take note of the small things she does to show how she feels about Leonard because if theres one thing we should have learned about Penny its that she doesnt show her love and commitment to him and their relationship in big gestures, she shows it in the little things, like wearing that locket.

I think the reason it easier to feel for Leonard is because he is the classic 'Good Guy' so when he is hurt we feel bad and he has been hurt quite a bit during the show.  Penny is the pretty girl that can get any guy, and she has been the cause of a lot of Leonard's hurt, so she comes off more as a bad guy in the relationship than Leonard.  But remember, the last couple of episodes, most of us got on Leonard for now being supportive, so he doesn't get a free ride every time.

I still like my description that our favorite couple are simply two flawed people, who love each other. They are not perfect and one or the other screws things up, unintentionally.

I feel what has changed since Season 3 when they first started dating, is Penny. Leonard used to be the insecure one in the relationship, Penny in Season 3 was almost settling for him. Where as now since the ILY and Alex, she has discovered she has insecurities she never thought she ever had. Now at 28 still being hot and all but also realizing she cannot get by her looks anymore, the comparisons in career success has made her feel uneasy, after seven years its almost hit her. It's almost like Penny was the hot girl next door that all the guys desired espeically Leonard, now she's still the hot girl, but she's growing up and realizing all she has too offer is her looks. That is why I made the point that in Season 2 the casting told her she was too much like a type, when she moved at 20 just broke up with Kurt and she was isolated and lonley, and she was naive to think stardom was just going too happen, well it diddn't, their are tons of types of like her aspiring for stardom in LA, it's all about luck. So I don't agree that they neccessairly view their relationship differently, they are just equally flawed and it's probably true their is no logical reason why they should be together, its amazing really but for some unspoken reason they work. When it comes to developing on Penny's plot, it well take time, I think the writers are still hesitent in showing the backgrounds of the entertainment industry, and they still beleive it is more realistic too see a pretty blonde girl struggle to be an actress, that maybe wearing thin now though. Maybe the cliffhanger is Penny finnally gets a break in her career, but it requires being away for 3-4 months, kinda like Leonard last year, and in S8 premiere she comes back and the movie was a big success, now she has acheived some form of autonomy, she realizes she still wants to be with Leonard and proposes. Thats a while away though, at this point though theirs no gureentees that well happen, so Lenny may move in together for financial reasons at this point.

Yes, she does. As Terrible Waitress said, she just doesnt show it in the same way Leonard does. I think her wearing that locket, keeping that box in her closet, keeping the snowflake by her bed and telling him that she is passionate about him, shows how she feels in the relationship. She asked him to marry her for crying out loud! Yes, she was drunk and done it out of vulnerability, but she asked that question, which meant it had to have been on her mind because things like that dont just come out of nowhere

I think it came out of nowhere and marriage was probably the last thing on her mind prior to that scene....same like she never had sleeping with Raj in her mind before she *slept* with him....

Things that I don't like about Penny : hypocrisy and her hostileness towards only Leonard

Things that I don't like about Leonard : patheticness ...the writing of his character never had any focus though

umm discovered seems to be the wrong word here.... Rediscovered(that too a few times) seem to be the better word...

season 2 initial episode was the first episode where discovery happened...then it fluctuated a lot....

season 3 ...for most the time ...she seemed pretty secure...pretty confident.....pretty casual too..

season 4 .... for the first half she seemed pretty happy most of the time....only when Leonard starts dating priya she becomes sad and kind of shows signs of insecurity again :p

season 5.... first half nothing ...and then arrogance in the second half and no signs of insecurity..

season 6... first part she acts as if she could do a lot better than Leonard....then Alex comes by ...so Penny realizes *again* that Leonard could get someone good for him apart from her...and thus her insecurity is discovered again...

same fluctuations continue in season 7

People remember she has the power when it comes to a proposal, so although she is under pressure, their is no pressure being exerted from Leonard. We already know Penny has thought about the future, in S5 she revealed to Leonard that she thinks about having kids and marrage, although she said she thinks about a lot of things. Vasu I get your points, your right she has had underlying insecurites in the past, so its more rediscovered. But IMO the level she felt with Alex in S6, was not something she had experienced before, I do agree to a certain extent that her insecurities have fluctated from moment to moment. But these have been subtle insecurities, where she was in the process of realizing she is not secure with who she is, and other women desiring Leonard. But Season 6 was the first time she discovered the real depth of her insecurities, not just with Leonard but with her self and her acting career. And as you said now, it is now fluctating hence why some beleive Leonard is all in, where as at this point maybe Penny feels unfulfilled. This occured since Season 2 tbh, with the Barbarian Sublimation, when Beverley came to visit, she target the route of her insecurites her father. She's flawed no doubt, but if she didd't want to be with Leonard at the end of the day, she has had every oppurtunity bur she hasen't. And funny the things you dislike about Penny and Leonard are the very things I actually like.

Like her so called hypocrisies, people seem to think everything she has ever said or done needs to be taken at face value, and if she does the complete opposite to what she said suddenly that makes her a hypocrite. Like the big one is Bath Item DU, people seem to think that because she is not dating Leonard because he is too smart for her, she cannot date anyone with any form of intelligence. Which never made sense to me, because considering the amount of dumb guys she dated, I don't think smartness was ever on her radar. She dated DU because once again Penny's naiveness which is something I have never liked about her got the best of her, he ended up being married and once again Leonard was their for her, he was luckey though he could of entered the Friend Zone. As with Leonard's patheticness I actually find those traits endearing, it makes you feel for his character seeing him struggle with his feelings for Penny, kinda like with Ross and Friends. I've said this before if in Season 7 this was still happening, I would agree with you but its not, he has shown a much more assertive side since Season Four. As for Penny's hostileness towards Leonard, people also forget she was early in her twenties with no family, and her identity was being shifted if that makes any sense haha, she was isolated, I mean when she first met Leonard their was no time frame, she diddn't have to ever date him. And the bowling scene, and the eventual one night after going back to dating Zac, like I said I always gave her the benefit of the doubt, because of who she was and she was always a work in progress.

I actually agree with Vasu for once.  Using Penny's proposal as a sign of commitment is not a strong argument.  It was a spur of the moment reaction to Leonard's retort when she said she had nothing to show for her life in California.  I'm not saying I think she doesn't want to be with him.  But I don't think she wants to be married to him at this time either.  When she told him the next day that he did the right thing in hesitating, I think she meant it was the right thing to do because she doesn't think that they are ready for marriage yet, not just because she was drunk when she said it and he would be taking advantage of her.

I actually think I wasen't using her proposal as a sign she is committed, but stuff like saying she loves him, or her feeling insecure about their relationship, or being okay with Leonard leaving for 3 months, knowing their relationship would be okay. And her saying that it was the right thing too do, was more to do with the current state of her life, then the current state of their relationship.

Does'nt matter . If he wanted to he should have. As simple as that.

So either he was satisfied or he chickened out is the only conclusion here.

I have to go with that the conversation took place off camera, because it wasn't funny.  I'm sure things got tense and L/P had to clear the air and it just wasn't fun to watch. By the time the next episode took place they were back to normal having reached an agreement. With only about 20 minutes of show to cover about a week of activities for 7 people that's the only way things can happen. I'm sure they spent time discussing Sheldon and his assumption that they would be taking care of him forever (notice how in this episode he assumed Leonard would be driving him to comic-con when he was eighty 80). Which does not bode well for Shamy.

Well yeah, who wants the nanny when they can have the parents? But I kind of doubt they talked about it off-screen, Penny didn't have any desire to and Leonard wasn't going to push it. So I'd say it's time to just move on.

I thought it was kind of pathetic/odd that it had taken Penny another girl(for the second time) to realize she really loves Leonard...not to mention inconsistent....but that's how it happened...

Anyway coming to Leonard and assertiveness...I always thought as the series is going on and on his character is growing more pathetic apart from a few episodes where he has shown confidence and assertiveness(100th episode)

I still argue that Leonard made much more braver decisions early on in the series...he asked out Penny twice in the first season and stood up to Kurt twice and called out Penny a few times....he was shy during first seasons but never was pathetic like he became in the later seasons...

Shyness is endearing but acting pathetic never is....

And as far as Penny's hypocrisy and her hostileness towards Leonard is concerned....she always gets mad Leonard even makes the slightest of the mistakes while being extremely patient towards others....which on few occasions I thought were cruel(season 3 finale)

and how many times have we not seen Penny crucify Leonard for doing the same things she did/does many times...

I think it was both with much more importance to the second part.

Your choice :)

But as far as I am concerned , the air was cleared in the last scene (still cannot understand how Leonard turned 180 degrees) ..... and Penny probably had no interest/time in talking about their relationship again....and when Penny has no interest in talking there never is conversation between the two irrespective of whether Leonard is being pathetic/needy/sad/hurt/whatever......

Apart from this , I still do not understand the reason why they went the way they went with Leonard and Penny during those episodes especially if the resolution given was such a lame one with no proper explanation of how Leonard changed his mind...

if debt/money was the only reason for his concern ...he clearly should have known that Penny does'nt make that much money anyway and he could easily cover for her and should have said so at the beginning... now it kind of looks like he does not want her to become famous because he thinks she will get to hang out with hot guys and will probably dump him..... he got jealous for her flirting with a guy as a part of her role....

Penny was a low in cash so she could'nt buy Leonard a gift for christmas

Penny had enough money to buy a little dress which could take her to places.

Penny from the looks of it does not have money to buy a gift for Leonard on valentine's day

So may be she got her pay check in the middle and spent everything before valentine's day.

One way of looking at it. Another is she was short before Christmas, got her check from NCIS, bought the dress, she has now quit TCF, so she is now trying to conserve any money she has.

Probably :)

We don't know the exact time frame of the show.....how much time passes between episodes...

If I remember correctly Amy kind of implied , Penny bought the dress last week or something....

and if she is really conserving any money she has now...its a good start by not buying Leonard a gift for Valentine's day and by having Amy and Bernie pay her bill :queen:....

IMHO the more important question is why she bought the little hot dress to begin with? She said something like with that dress I can get me into anywhere I want! Where exactly does she want to get into looking totally hot? If it's in to exclusive night clubs then there is a big flag being raise about her commitment to Leonard. Is it for her job search and she feels looking totally hot can get her in to directors or producers offices. I don't know but dressed totally hot to get into a director or producer's office, don't you think that director or producer would think she would do "anything" for an audition? It seemed like an odd statement to me to make if she really is committed to Leonard.

Wait, so now that she's in a relationship she has to dress like a nun to show her commitment? Is this Saudi Arabia? Both her and the married Bernadette went out looking hot in the S6 Christmas episode, and you need to look nice at auditions to even be considered a viable candidate for the part. You have to acknowledge your most attractive features. Only the most vile, sexist pig of a director or producer would immediately assume she'd be willing to prostitute herself for the part.

It's really a shame you jumped to such a conclusion. But I suppose it's not that surprising.

If that was the case , she probably would have done it by now which she has'nt. So that is not the case.

Anyway , I thought this was a pretty poor episode for Penny to follow up after the previous one . Her not being in the episode would have been better.

Don't yell at me, I'm not the one that had her say that line. The writers did. All I said was that it sounded very odd. And as a matter a fact my wife made a comment about the line also when she her her say it.

I agree with you vasu. It's just some of the things the writers have Penny say. Like when the girls were going to Las Vegas and she said at the pool all the drinks are on these! Which is it is she still the hot neighbor or is she in a relationship? Or is she the hot neighbor, that is in a relationship that still gets what she wants from her looks?

It was the interpretation. Her and her Bernadette both went out in rather hot dresses, to a club, in the Christmas episode. So I have to agree that questioning her commitment based on that line seems a bit of a stretch. Also wearing a hot dress to an audition is not a big deal. In fact, if you can get an advantage by wearing something like that, more power to them. It may be nothing more than the casting director or producer remembering her based on that dress.

And Penny did wear a hot dress trying to get the tenure for Leonard

By tenure I remember...what happened to that....flushed down the drain??

It was probably given to someone else. With the way the three of them made such fools of themselves in that episode, who'd want to give them a job for life?

May be....it would have been nice if we atleast had a reference.............and if that is not the case , I would like to see another episode based on that or any reference about tenure....

Why does it have to be one or the other? Why can't she still enjoy the perks that come with being young and pretty? It's not as though Leonard doesn't get great pleasure from having a hot girlfriend, showing her off on the North Sea and taking a picture of them together for the sake of showing others when they don't believe him.

At the last awards show Kaley was dressed fairly conservative compared to other Hollywood evens. Could it be she was showing her commitment to her new Husband who was sitting beside her??

Kaley always been pretty modest in her taste. She had no trouble showing a little bit of cleavage at the GG or the SAG (which is completely fine), so I doubt it. Her being married to him is commitment enough, she doesn't need to change her style.

But seeing as how you once stated that "reformed whores make the best wives" (referring to the Penny character), it isn't surprising you think that.

She has to be who she is and dress the way she wants and Leonard just has to suck it up. It must be difficult having to tolerate beingwith a person who is gorgeous and wants to be with you. I feel for him, because his life is so tough (insert sarcasm sign). However, if he needs a Sheldon in his life then my sympathy wanes. It makes no sense now. He needs to buck up.... but that is not going to happen. Penny has drawn a line in the sand with her job. Why can't Leonard with Sheldon. He is not committing either.
