Leonard And Penny Season 7 *spoiler* Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

They had a brief moment in this last episode while they were sitting on the couch kissing. However, unfortunately the writers went quickly back to the snarky comments. While some of those comments could be seen as them being comfortable with each other. I have watched the episode a few times now and there was now smirk, or little smile from either after a couple of the comments (30 minutes is a long time for example). A couple of the comments were funny but others just seemed to hit a nerve with the person receiving the insult and I personally didn't think they were funny or called for if they were trying to show a comfort zone between them.

Who knows what the writers are thinking? I just sincerely hope the snarky bantering won't become a normal occurrence. If that happens I would begin to dread seeing my favorite couple together. That would be very unfortunate for me.

Maybe for you.

Except for her drinking after her part got cut, can you point to anytime she was shown drinking more than anyone else in the episode? And I remember well how much drunker Penny was than Sheldon in the "The Thanksgiving Decoupling"

It's not just her, it's both of them busting on each other jokingly. I do it with my wife, what's the problem?

Yeah, because out of the last four episodes they had the main storyline twice and Sheldon and Amy once. With the guys and girls separate in the other. Go to wikipedia, look up TBBT season 7 episodes and explain who is the main couple. And season six except for a handful of episodes was nothing but about Penny and Leonard. So I don't know where you got this idea from.

Yeah, because she has so much more money now to spend on those types of gifts…Oh, and it wasn't a book, it was motorcycle lessons.

If you dislike Penny so much, why even bother posting in a thread that is supposed to celebrate the couple? Why not complain about her in the Show section of the forum where others complain about things?

What I post here are my opinions.

There seems to be a glass of drink in her hand in the last 3-4 episodes. And if people on the show seem to notice it and comment on it then I don't see why I should not..

I hardly think the gifts Penny gave previously were expensive. Importantly a gift does not have to be something expensive , it just can be something nice.

And are you implying that Penny is penniless? Because you 're the one who said she would have a lot of money from her commercials and cheesecake factory work that would satisfy her needs for few months.

I have said things that I don't like about Leonard a few weeks ago and you never said that I hated Leonard , but when I say things that I don't like about Penny you say I hate Penny.....

And just because I posted things that I don't like , it does not imply that I hate those characters.

As are mine, they happen not to agree with yours at times

She didn't drink at all in "The Occupation Recalibration". She got drunk after her part was cut and I ask if you could point out where she was drinking more than others others within a scene. So far, you haven't, so if you think she is drinking too much, why not Bernadette and Amy in "Convention"? Or, the whole group (other than Sheldon at dinner in Locomotive? Or why not Bernadette, Amy, and Howard in "Locomotive" After all, when they were drinking wine on the train, Penny wasn't drinking wine. Note the bold, the facts of what has been shown disagree what you "seem" to believe.

I didn't say a lot of money, I said enough to get by for, a couple of months, if she watches her money.

I have said things that I don't like about Leonard a few weeks ago and you never said that I hated Leonard , but when I say things that I don't like about Penny you say I hate Penny…..

Where did I say you hated Penny? I said IF you dislike her so much, why post in this thread?

And just because I post things that I don't like , it does not imply that I hate those characters.

And saying dislike isn't implying hate, either. I happen to like the couple, I happen to like where they are, I also happen to like talking about the good things going on and I can't control the things I don't like, so I just don't talk about it. It's obvious that this thread isn't of the same mindset at this time, and I tire of pointing out obvious errors, so answer as you will. If anyone needs me, I'll be over in the Shamy thread.

When most of characters on the show imply that Penny drinks the most , I tend to believe them even if you don't.

Amy said something like this regarding Penny "Drinking in the afternoon just like your mother" to Bernadette . So if Penny is going to auditions in the "background" she is also drinking in the afternoon in the "background".

Translation: I can't provide anything specific so it obvious I don't have a valid point, but maybe if I wave my hands, no one will notice.

So, by your logic, Bernadette definitely has a problems, because she also drinks in the afternoon, as Amy said about Penny. And, while talking about Amy, she must have a drinking problem also, because she was drinking with Penny and Bernadette. And, Amy and Bernadette were drinking on the train, when Penny wasn't drinking, even more of a problem for those two. Oh, yeah, Howard was drinking with Amy and Bernadette on the train when Penny wasn't drinking, so Howard must have a problem.

It's not just the Shennys who have left. It's also Nostalgics and Sheldon purists who don't recognize the show anymore.  It's been made very clear they're not welcome here. :warning:

They are quite welcome here.  However, if they have a history of stating or are going to state, as many of them have, that the show sucks, that Leonard sucks, that Amy sucks, and (my pet peeve) where they intentionally misrepresent events to "prove" that there is something wrong with a couple or with the show, then yeah, there's going to be some pushback.   I get along quite well with most Shenny's, Nostalgics, and Sheldon purists, but why would anyone, who really dislikes large parts of the show bother watching?  Or, if they are watching, why come to a website that celebrates the show to post extremely negative comments about the show or major parts of the show they don't like?

This is not an anomaly that only happens in TBBT universe but in other fandoms as well.  From what I have gathered, people who call themselves "true" fans feel it is their right to point out everything that is wrong about the show that they fell in love with.  Reporting the various heinous crimes of TPTB and the writers is their right as "true" fans.  Anyone who still likes the show in whatever capacity or goes along with the change because of whatever reasons is a traitor and not a "true" fan.

Unfortunately, I kid you not...

I see trees of green........ red roses too
I see em bloom..... for me and for you
And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.

Can't we all just get along? Perhaps find a middle ground? Perhaps just ignore the antagonists? I don't know...something?

Penny has a drinking problem.  Saying that in one specific episode they didn't show her drinking at all is in no way a good argument that she doesn't.   They have shown her  drunk multiple more times then any of the other characters.   They have also either shown or implied that she had drank too much and ended up doing something that she wished she hadn't many more times then any of the other characters.

IMO the writers ARE hinting that things are not going all that well between Penny and Leonard.  If someone has a drinking problem you do not "kid" her about it especially in front of other people.   Also I don't believe that if you think your boyfriend is too fast in the sack you do not kid him about it especially in front of other people.  It just makes everyone uncomfortable.

IMO to say that somehow they are so "in sync"  because they were both ready to leave the Vet's office and go get something to eat is a real stretch. Just because two people want to go get something to eat, especially after skipping dinner, is hardly a sign of how much they are in love.   If it shows anything it would be that they weren't all that concerned about Raj's dog.

I am not predicting that they will have Leonard and Penny break up, I am saying that there relationship is not all a bed of roses, and I would not be surprised if they did have them break up, even for a short period of time, and I also think that if they do, this time it will be Leonard who initiates the break up.  If that should happen, I hope that Leonard either goes out with Alex or that Priya returns.

Good one, trying to get a laugh in this thread I see. What's with your bizarre obsession with Alex and Priya? He and Priya both cheated on one another within weeks, and he never had any interest in little Alex Sue (just liked getting his ego stroked).

If Penny had a drinking problem she'd be drinking in secret, have legal or medical problems, have trouble holding down a job (she quit TCF on her own terms), have at least one DUI, and see her relationships impacted by her drinking. That isn't the case. Leonard is very ignorant to think such a thing, as are you.

I agree they discuss Penny's drinking a lot on the show but to me it's all for the joke. People don't want to watch "an alcoholic" on a comedy show. If this was a drama that would be different. Things aren't perfect with Lenny but they're not perfect with Shamy or H/B. Penny's lack of employment isn't going to help. I do agree at a remote possibility of a break up would be initiated by Leonard. IMO Priya was never competition to Penny but Alex was a definite threat. But since the actress who plays Alex is on another show I don't know if a return is possible.

Apparently you haven't had drinking problems in your family. I had a family member who was an alcoholic. None of those example you gave mean anything. It wasn't in secret, never had legal or medical problems, never had a DUI, had a full time job for many, many years and never affected his marriage. Leonard's comment was a joke not ignorance. I know you love Penny but your comments make no sense.

I have strong feelings about romantic Shenny because it is a radical idea by a very small portion of the fan base and is not part of the show. It is antagonistic towards Lenny and Shamy ships, that are canon, and really has no purpose in a forum that celebrates the show. It should be banded by this forum by the moderators IMHO.

On the other hand people that have expressed concern over how the characters have changed in the show have never been really treated badly, unless they started to be extreme in their views. I personally have stated that I would like to see more of the happy carefree Penny, from previous seasons, than this more snarky Penny we have now and other people have expressed similar views on other characters. It is when someone posts that they hate the show now and the characters are terrible, is when people question why they watch and why they bother posting unless it is just to generate conflict.

Anyway that is my two cents on the matter

I have seen alcoholism in my family, immediate family in fact, that's why I get annoyed whenever someone says Penny is one. I listed the symptoms of alcoholism, so they definitely mean something. You have to have at least a few to be treated fore alcoholism.

Leonard's comments were made to get a laugh, but if he meant what he said about her drinking than he is ignorant.

But wasn't it ignorant by Penny to say she would be mad at him if she didn't have a buzz?

I think they may be past a place where they would break up now. One thing I've noticed is Penny doesn't seem to scream at him anymore since the episode last season where he rewrote her history paper. In previous seasons, before they got together again now, she would scream a lot and they even did an episode on their arguing.

Even the last few episodes, when she quit TCF, she seem more disappointed in Leonard than mad at him and she questioned her own motives when she asked Sheldon if she was doing the right thing. They have been acting like a old married couple.

The problem with that scene was that the writers were trying to do two things in my opinion: 1.) They wanted a cheap laugh at Penny's expense, which totally failed. It wasn't funny to the group (just look at their faces), it wasn't funny to Penny (she came out and send she was pissed. Oh, and she wasn't buzzed, she was giving Leonard a way out which he didn't deserve.) and to many fans it wasn't funny. It was so off the mark that Leonard had to explain himself to her. When you have to explain a joke, it isn't funny! , 2.) The writers were setting the tone for the rest of the episode where L/P were busting each others chops. Like I said in a post earlier, if this snarky banter is what the writers have in mind for these two going forward to show that they are in a comfort zone. Well then they missed their mark and I'm not buying it.

I just think that Penny always drinking isn't something the show will ever take seriously. So I try and ignore it. :(

I was very shocked at Leonard's line in 7.15 about it.

umm , how about you watch the show (the last few seasons) once again and see how many scenes you can pick up where Penny drinks..

And funny thing is I have never said Penny has drinking problems.... go back and read all my posts...I only said "I wish they would stop showing Penny drinking so much".....which I said as a fan of her character.......  I don't see where you got the problems from ....it seems to be your own interpretation of the show

And no by my logic , Bernadette does not have drinking "problems" because she only drank that afternoon , but Amy implied Penny has a habit of drinking in the afternoon...

Here's a little excersize for those who have seen years worth of sitcoms. Think of all the episodes that you remember on classic TV comidies that involve a husband and wife tandem that did not have them sniping at each other verbally. I can go back more than 50 years and I am coming up with a blank. That's how couples are written on TV because minor conflict is funny. Zingers are funny. Working out problems together is funny. Pointing out shortcomings is funny.

The fact is L/P are written now as a married couple with the standard humor for that trope. That's what we have to look forward to from now on.

I think the others shocked look was more because Leonard normally worships the ground Penny stands on(sits on). They were expecting as in the past for Penny do "lose it" at Leonard for what he had said. If you actually listened to the line and not overanalyzed it was funny. Considering all the "crap" he has put up with (and most likely future crap)in regards to Penny it wasn't a big deal. As BangerMain pointed out this is classic comedy. Edited by Chrismo

The writers want to have their cake and eat it too.  I mean they won't let Leonard and Penny move onto the next step(s) of living together/engagement/marriage but have the nerve to try and write them as an old married couple.  It feels like they are cheating Leonard and Penny as a couple to me and I don't want fake married couple without everything that goes with it.

When is the last time we got to see Leonard and Penny do something fun?, go somewhere exciting?, are do anything young couples do? I didnt like the so-called zingers because they are same ones that has been used through the show.  After awhile these zingers gets played out, imo.

That was what struck me as significant about that line. Penny accepts cracks about herself from all the gang and lets it roll off her like she was armor plated. Except Leonard. We have been so conditioned to Penny exploding at Leonard for the slightess possible critiszim even when it was not intentional. I waited for the explosion; it did not come. I remember how when Leonard gave the color-coded list of things to fix during the beta test, how the studio audience gasped as if to say "no Leonard, NO!" They were just as conditioned .

Penny since season one has known that she is on a special pedestal built for her by Leonard ("I know that Leonard has a little crush on me", to which Sheldon replied Leonard considered her his "Helen of Troy"). She is on no one elses pedestal, except for a time, Amy's. She has not liked for a moment not being worshipped by Leonard, so maybe this is growth that she can except Leonard's flash of true feeling without going code red.

It is getting old and I'm glad Kaley Cuocco-Sweeting called them out on it last week. Amoung the comments she made was that if she can get married after knowing a guy for six months, surely Penny can get married to a man she has known for six years. She made it obvious, gently of couse, that TPTB are taking this failed proposal, delayed cohabitation thing to a silly extreme.
