Leonard And Penny Season 7 *spoiler* Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

And another thing... was it a good look to have Leonard as the outsider, in 7.20, when Penny and Sheldon were having their bonding session in their PJs? The meeting of the two was initially sweetened by the demonstration of Penny's off screen affection for Leonard. Then, Leonard appears after their D&M and is made to look like a third wheel. It just felt contrived - "lets have a Shenny moment then oops better add some L/P love upfront, and we need to finish with a laugh, but lets not pick on Sheldon because he and Penny have just had a serious bit that we can't undermine, so hmm, Leonard can take the hit because we already frontloaded with implied L/P love".

It also occurs to me that Penny cops remarkably unpleasant suggestions from Sheldon and seems to like him more - sort of perversely - and that those moments of badinage come at the expense of fun comedy between L/P.

Oh well. Onwards! Looking forward to seeing Emily squeezed around the coffee table sometime.

I agree with you. I disliked that whole scene myself. Penny, feeling bad for Sheldon, tries to have a serious discussion with him because he wasted a good portion of his life pursuing string theory and what happens? He totally humiliates Penny regarding her acting, her education and her relationship with Leonard. Then for good measure the writers make fun of one of Leonard's medical problems so that Sheldon can tell Penny she should break up with him. What a wonderful friend he is. Especially coming from someone who is such a great expert regarding relationships with the opposite sex.

The writers have just taken the magic out of Leonard and Penny this season.  Even the small amount of really great moments, like the car scene and Penny's Leonard box, are short and never really touched on again.  It is just like they are giving us just enough not to bail on the ship.  There are so many little things that could be done for them like Penny defending him when he is not around, what happened to the Penny,  who his "Best Friend" told to break his heart, that stood up for him and said no, because she loves him, in season 6?  Leonard and Sheldon's  friendship has become completely one sided in the show now, Leonard tries to be his friend and Sheldon just craps over everyone.  It makes no sense that a girl like Penny would take this abuse of being called a blonde monkey, compared to a gorilla, being told she is a failure and should do porn, and making constant jokes about her failed dreams.  Whoever said it, this is comedy and it is becoming less funny.

And One small negative word or thought from Leonard and hell breaks loose from Penny...her temper flares and anger rises.......no patience what so ever from Penny's side....

I always get confused by this. Do you want Penny to treat Sheldon exactly like Leonard? I would think you should hold your boyfriend/girlfriend to higher standard than his roommate but I guess that's just me. Maybe the scene last week was actually a S/L/P threesome and it happened to be Sheldon on the couch first. I agree with SRAM that Sheldon's crap has become less funny lately but Penny going "Nebraska" on him isn't really going to change the situation. I'm guessing the episode on the 24th when all "hell breaks loose" is going to end up being a big nothing. It's sounds like to me that Leonard, Amy and Bernadette are happy to be rid of Sheldon/Penny at least for a little while.

Maybe it's because she expects that kind of crap from Sheldon but better of Leonard? Especially in this case, when he was the one who gave her grief for not taking this degrading role in the first place?

What is far worse, Sheldon encouraged Penny to do porn: 'given the state of your career, can you afford to be so picky?' and she never so much as batted an eyelash.

And what's more, Penny took the initial degrading role in Serial Apeist all on her very own for the very same reason Leonard gave her years later: you might never know what it may lead to. As it has been listed on the forum just very recently, there are a lot of current big name stars who did less that optimal film roles before they were famous. Hell, Jennifer Aniston was promoting the Nutri-System weight loss program before Friends!

If you hold you boy/girl friend to a higher standard , I think they also deserve to be shown higher affection and care and sympathy than the others..

there have been several occasions where Penny should have done those things towards Leonard but never did..... the table episode you mentioned...the episode where Leonard tries to help Sheldon with the element, the episode where Sheldon goes to Texas for Missy's baby when Sheldon ORDERS Leonard to drive him to airport Penny just smiles (See TENSOR I noticed that nuance :p) instead of arguing with Sheldon that Leonard is injured....and many more.....

And if anything directly involved to Penny comes from Leonard ...she just hulks up...like the Penny married to Zack revelation....or him insulting her intelligence.... when she constantly mocks his ability in the bedroom , his ability to pick up girls....

Half eaten  gross left out free chocolates , watch brought from his money  don't show any affection....

And of course Leonard being pathetic and submissive ....Penny hardly has to do anything more than she does now....

What I want to see is forPenny to show half or atleast quarter of the affection care compassion and patience she shows towards Sheldon to Leonard.

In the moment bolded above, the joke would have been ruined if Penny or anyone else had said anything. The joke was that he just got through telling Amy that she didn't need to drive him to the airport because he didn't want to trouble her with the task, being very considerate, only to turn around and give Leonard the task.

Anything beyond that moment wouldn't have been funny. And for all we know, they could have had an argument afterward, or Amy could have driven him after all or anything. That doesn't really matter at all, since we already got the punch line.

If you deflate the comedy with all the responses you seem to want, then there's no comedy left.

I see what you are saying, although a look of sympathy to Leonard rather than a look of acceptance of Sheldon's double standard might have worked as well.

@ArmyGirl, I'm glad to hear that you are back and hopefully OK. That was a long stretch in the hospital. It will be good to have you around for the rest of the season and beyond.

Having Penny coming down the hall while tying her robe was a bone to the Lenny Fans.  The set up was all about P/S and nothing proved it more than the way the writers had Leonard enter the scene.

I have complaint that this season is all about P/S ganging up on Leonard, while they bond with Leonard as the third wheel.  As of 7.20 nothing has cause me to change my opinion.  Both P/S constantly puts Leonard down and Penny goes above and beyond imo to protect and side with Sheldon.   I know some get upset with me when I say, I don't feel Penny is committed to the relationship, the same as Leonard.  I know some want to throw in the "old married couple" analogy well then I say someone has check out of the marriage this season.  Most say Penny accepts Leonard for who he is, this season has shown me she really doesn't due to some of her comments she has made.

I still wonder why the writers put Leonard and Penny back together if this is all they had for them.  Heck they could have shipped Leonard off for the season and still had P/S bonding and doing things together, if you ask me. I don't know where the writers are going with L/P relationship but I know one thing it has been most disappointing for me and I don't have any high hope that things will get better by the season finale and yes, I know we have the Proton episode coming up.   I was looking forward to it but watching the episodes leading up to has take some of the shine off it.  Now there is only two episodes left to be taped and I don't see a way things can be turned around.

Yeah some of us don't think Leonard has been treated too well this season.

Caught up with episodes and reading this thread and I have to agree that Leonard has taken a beating this season.  I feel they could have left Leonard on the boat all season and it wouldn't seem like he is the interloper of all things Penny and Sheldon.

Lol. I'm at 90/140 on a bad day. But I now watch "Castle" as well, where they know how to finally commit. They'd take a bullet for each other. Maybe they will leave this theme next season.

I hardly think so..... They could have easily written a Penny punch line too.....which could have been even more funnier....

but still there is no reason for Penny to smile at that....

Caught up with episodes and reading this thread and I have to agree that Leonard has taken a beating this season.  I feel they could have left Leonard on the boat all season and it wouldn't seem like he is the interloper of all things Penny and Sheldon.

Leonard has almost been a non entity for the past few seasons.....

If he were left on the boat, the boat would have probably drowned in the first or second episode :p

Just look how Leonard's "career" and his time on the boat was handled ( all concentration on Sheldon and Penny) ..... and how Penny and Sheldon's career crisis has been handled....even Howard's career was handled in a much more detailed way .....

And I don't see anything better in season 8..... Leonard will probably be waiting for Penny to become a big star..... after which I don't see them lasting much longer.... Penny as of now only treats Leonard like an after thought and has little patience for him or his problems......... If she becomes a big star.....I hardly think Penny would tolerate his jealousy and insecurity or his issues......

Completly disagree no way has Leonard become a non entity just because he hasent bn the focus. They hv seven characters to write for, they cnt mk everyone the focus. I kinda feel the general tone of this thread atm, from an observation is just a continuation of the speculation or what ever it is, thst Pennys just using Leonard, or stringing him along, or waiting for someone better to come along. Whos that then? I find it hard to beleive seeing its bn prooven so many times that Penny feels she can do better then Leonard, when in realitu she cant. Its no longer lonely nerd desiribg the hot chick from across the hall, its now down on her luck girl who despite all intellectual disparity loves her condiontally. Because of this as above as an example, cinsidering the theory Leonard has bn a non entity the past cple years, and Penny and Sheldon career wise hv bn more of focus. That once Penny gets stardom, she well no longer need Leonard the levarage and dump him. You would like to think after all this time ppl or fans would understand the chatacters, if anything Leonard would dump Penny, seeing looks are no longer a novelty she needs to offer more. Their also seems to be this peception that hypothetically if Penny breaks

Then naturally Leonards insecurities and trust issues well kick in, based om what? What i see is two ppl im a committed relationship, sharing requitted love. They dont need to every episode proove a point, or Penny needs to defend Leonard or this means Leonard is an after thought to her. Penny has always come across as a strong willed, independent women who doesent nd a guy to hold her hand, all defend her like some danzel im distress, and she clearly has the same respect for Leonard. Like i said Leonats aint the lonely nerd anymore, their storys changed, Pennys self actulization hsd been deconstructed, she is now embracing the realiy shes meant to be with the nerdy guy next door, but archtypical hot blonde next door and the lonely nerd next door aint your typical love story, so its always bn a work in progress, so their bound to be pitfalls. Penny most likely skated through life by her looks, society let her, so her admission she was a bully in hs nvr surprised me. So being 20 moving to La she hd no reason to expect any different, so with her eyes on stardom she nvr expected or falling in love with the guy next door was not part of her plans. But as she found out in Barb Sublim, its almost like she was big fish small pound, suddennly she was big fish, huge aquarium surronded by equally bigger fishes. As she said the casting told her she is top much of a "type". So most likely she hasent gone for roles as she has a fear of being typed cast as just anothet pretty blonde. Point is it aint S1 alot has changed sincw then, Penny has always bn a work in progress, she just diddnt kno any better then. But Leonard aint the insecure, lonely, nerd he was in S1 he has evolved too. Like Stuart said they are now the strongest couple he knows, so arguing what Penny did then and thrir is pointless, and saying just because Leonard apparrently has bn less of a focus this season, that mean hes becoming an afterthought for Penny lol, i doubt that. Shes just focusing on her career, theyre nt attached at the hip, looking at the proton ep it looks like an impirtant step and progress for their relationship, it mau not seem like it but after making tremendous progress with them in s6. I feel their was not much progress to be made, so its more subtlties. To me they are solid enough they cn tackle anytjing.

Look, I don't doubt the relationship. I just want to see more of it and less of "sex on a stick".

We'll you are the minority. Everyone else is bitching about Penny apparently tearing down and not accepting Leonard, not being committed (despite a proposal) and being eager to leave him right when she finds something different. I'm not sure what they're doing here, since they clearly don't like the couple and can only manage to complain.

As for Sheldon, I think Penny knows that arguing will get her nowhere with him. Leonard would have saved himself a lot of aggravation and humiliation by figuring that out (the cringeworthy argument they had on public radio comes to mind). I'm sure that incedent took tenure off the table for them both.

I have said before (more than once) that L has been marginalised and I see that a few around are of the same opinion. A shame as he was once the core oj the group and L/P the pivotal pairing. MOT ANY MORE. L is now a whipping boy for S with little or no visible support from P.
