SRAM
I'd be happy for the discussion of events from three seasons past to be in a thread on the show page. Goblyninatrenchcoat might come back to add her/his sage comments. It just harshes my buzz here. But it's quite fair that it be talked by anyone who recently discovered tbbt greatness. Also, Sheldon is less able to actively impede Leonard, because Penny lets Leonard let himself in to the flat. He can escape. How long would she have sat there in her nightie behind an unlocked door if she knew Sheldon might come through the door. So by now she must of taken her key back. Doesn't Sheldon always knock? That is why they made such a big deal of him catching them in the second episode, he didn't knock. I bet Leonard has that key on his key ring now. JonRS92
I would imagine that the key to Penny's apartment is in the bowl in the guys' apartment. I don't think it was ever shown that Sheldon had somehow taken possession of it and it was on his ring. They cut to him outside of Penny's door. There is nothing to say one way or the other where he got the key from. He could just as easily have taken it from the bowl on his way out the door. I think it makes the most sense that the key is in the bowl in case of an emergency.

Does this mean Sheldon has "opened Penny's door" before Leonard? Heheh I just can't recall seeing Leonard doing this. When I observed this back in 7.02 this very thing popped in my head and I was upset about it. I don't know if we are suppose to count when Leonard open the door after the delivery of Penny's entertainment center. I do know that from the point Leonard and Penny have been dating we have never seen Leonard open her door with her key on his key ring.

The door was already unlocked last season when he went into her apartment after the Valentine's dinner disaster. Hmm...

I can see this was necessary for the joke, but I long ago wrote that I don't like the shared house approach. I'm not too upset, but I'm going to say that Leonard has a key and he used it to let himself in when when she beat him around the head with her breasts (metaphorically). terriblewaitress
Maybe Sheldon just put that key on his keyring when he suspected Penny of cheating on Leonard in case he needed to do something so drastic as to 'catch them in the act'. Because then, Leonard could have still used that emergency key to get into Penny's apartment to surprise her, and put it back afterwards to cover up all his tracks. Sheldon would have noticed the missing key in the bowl. This way, we still get to see Leonard receiving a key to Penny's apartment and it kind of explains Sheldon having a key. Or, Leonard already has a key to Penny's apartment, so Sheldon now owns the emergency one.

HollyAndOatmeal
I think the writers are pretty clever. They get paid to work on the number 1 sitcom, so to say that "they are all about the laugh and nothing else matters" seems a bit far stretched. It is a comedy so yes, a lot is done for the laughs. But to say nothin else matters? Well the developing story lines are just one thing that indicate just how much the serious, sensitive and non-comic moments matter too and the important role they play in contributing to the show and it's success. You do yoga? Lol I do indeed do yoga... why?

Okay let me put it another way comedy/getting laughs are the first priority and most things are farther down the line. For instance it's Season Seven and look how long it took to get some real growth in the three main characters. It's usually one step forward and three steps back so excuse me for thinking getting laughs are the highest priority.
I.Am.Molly
Tis sounds good but the writers aren't that clever imo. They are all about the laugh and nothing else matters. I love your story though. Wow. Really? The writers arent that clever? Look, i completely understand that you have every right to your own opinion and thats fine but to say that the writers of this show arent clever is just... rude. This show is the number one sitcom right now and that is because of, first and foremost, them. Of course how the actors play each scene and how it is edited and all of that come into it too, but the main reason this show is succesful is because of what those writers created. To say that everything they have done is 'all about the laughs' is just wrong. Look at the relationships they created. We here in this thread all love Leonard and Penny because of the way the writers created them. If the were all about the laughs, we wouldnt care less. They would have no heart, no depth of character, no backbone. We wouldnt care about their story or relate to any of them if it werent for the way the writers wrote them. The Shamy, whether you are a fan of them or not, is one of the most unique couples that has ever been on television and those writers created them. They brought a whole different type of relationship to our screens, and if they just wanted to be funny, they wouldnt have bothered. Why bother with someone as complicated as Sheldon if you just want to be funny? Why put him in a relationship just for laughs? Im sorry but to say those writers arent clever enough to think up one little backstory behind Sheldon having a key to Pennys apartment then you are just being ignorant. Is it not possible that you are just overthinking one tiny detail? Forgetting that Leonard and Sheldon have always had an emergency key to Pennys apartment, since season one! Why wouldn't it be on a keyring? What really is the difference if he carries it around with him than if its sitting in his bowl. He still has it. And whos to say Leonard doesnt have the exact same key, just because we havent seen him use it? Maybe he respects his girlfriends privacy enough not to use it at any random moment. Like i said before, you have a right to your opinon and if you really think that key is that significant, then thats fair enough, but to claim the writers arent clever isnt cool, especially when its obvious, at least to me, that they are. Sorry for the big essay of a post! haha i guess that comment just kinda got to me a bit! Edited October 15, 2013 by I.Am.Molly

Yes, getting laughs is first priority...if we didn't laugh then we wouldn't think it was funny, then we'd stop watching and then the show goes bye bye. But to say that "nothing else matters" is obviously not true. You are excused by the way.

So are you afraid that them showing Sheldon using a key to open Penny's door is somehow significant in the relationship between Penny & Leonard vs Penny and Sheldon or something like that? I think it is all about timing and how the scene works. Leonard has walked into Penny's apartment without knocking on a few occasions, which to me means a bit more than him having a key. When she went out with David Underhill in the Bath Item episode, I believe he walked into her apartment without knocking when he was asking why she would go out with Underhill (and not him, etc.) At any rate, I think it's a matter of timing--how the dialog works, how the moment works or doesn't work with barging in, knocking or using a key. We've almost never seen anyone use a key to get into Penny's apartment, but it makes sense that Leonard would have a key and that he would have given it to Sheldon while he was at sea. And I think the scene works best with Sheldon using the key to "break in" on them. It works because it gives Amy time to object when he says he's going in. She has time to say that because he's putting the key in the door. I don't think it's meant to imply anything as far as continuity or the bigger picture of the Lenny relationship. JonRS92
You did notice Sheldon had the key on his key ring for which he pulled out of his pocket in 7.02, then open Penny's door with the key --- right. I did notice it, but I just can't make that leap to assume it was "his" ring. When they cut to him he is already at the door listening I believe. Couldn't it be possible that he grabbed the keys out of the bowl and put them in his pocket while listening at the door? If you can point out a distinguishing characteristic of the key ring Sheldon used to get in the apartment that shows it is "his" ring I'll be happy to concede this. As it is, you might be right, but I don't think we have enough info to say for sure. Also, Leonard got into Penny's apartment at the start of the episode before Penny and Sheldon returned home. Do you think the never-seen building manager let him in? It is possible, of course, but we just don't know.

Nogravitasatall
I took a fancy to the key as a declaration, some time ago but it is just a key. There are other signs that she loves him. Penny is not going anywhere - yet (cue cello) . Edited October 15, 2013 by Nogravitasatall

It's much easier to think that Sheldon and Leonard both have keys. Not to mention there are multiple keys on the keyring, why would there be multiple keys on the ring if it was only the ring to Penny's apartment? Can you show us that it wasn't Sheldon's key ring?
