Even if she takes birth control doesn't mean she doesn't have to take pregnancy tests. My old pill used to say on the first page of the leaflet 'Risk of Pregnancy: 1 in 100' and this one just says 'IF YOU TAKE MORE THAN 12 HOURS LATE, YOU MAY STILL GET PREGNANT' ... and it's very easy to forget what time of day you took it. It's just like 3% of the time the condom is not effective (thank you Friends for teaching this to the population!) 

 

This is an odd topic. Maybe it was a throwaway joke, maybe it was a hint for the future. 

 

I just want Leonard to wear the hoodies less because of the arms.

This is one of the things that I like about this show. They could have milked unexpected pregnancy for melodrama early on. But it's not an issue, because it doesn't have to be an issue.

I really want too an episode where Leonard and Penny go on vacation, or do something together just the two of them, see them get closer and maybe grow their physical intimacy, because obviousley emotional intimacy is their. That scene really showed how far Penny has matured though.

Yeah but those kind of vacation things are so cheesy. And I love cheesy like bring on the romcoms! But I think that would just take away rather than add something. But maybe they'd do it in a really interesting way. 

 

 

Oooooh they could do them going away to one of his science things where he's a speaker and they spend the weekend there together. Leonard in a suit yes Leonard talking science yes Penny finding more things to break in rented rooms yes. Yes to all!

In Leonard's wargaming in "The Recombination Hypothesis" Penny kept one of his inhalers. It was a hope of his to have proof that she loved him all along. Now we have the even better reality of her keeping basically everything from before "The Wheaton Recurrance" (i.e. the break up). It was a pretty good sized box of things, of which she only pulled out a couple to show Leonard how romantic he was, inadvertently doing the most romantic thing she could possibly do for him. She kept the things from the beginning, and didn't get rid of them after the breakup. Magic.

Also think back to 1x17 when Penny threw out Mike's Ipod out the window lol, these possessions all have deep and emotional value to Penny more then any other guy she has been with. It also show's that Penny and Leonard despite their many differences have now become deconstructed and irrelevant, their same's go straight to the bone, as Leonard is known for chasing Penny and has seemed to do all the work, it's amazing all this time Penny kept all this stuff from their relationship from The Wheaton Recurrance before and after, the fact she had it in a box put's more value into it too.

AND there is a defense in depth strategy available to her. Our technological species understands the processes. She has options. But she also has Leonard, so who knows where it might go/might have gone.

I didn't say she was a "drunken slut".  Seems like a poor attempt to deflect from the fact that she was being irresponsible as far a birth control goes.  Yes, there are "in depth" strategies, but I don't see getting an abortion being a great option either.   The best option is not to get pregnant in the first place.   If she thought that she might be pregnant on several occassions, then she is not overly concerned about the affects of getting pregnant.

In addition I am not even sure that she realized exactly what she was doing.   She kept everything related to Leonard.   Pregancy test strips?  Why would anyone do that UNLESS subconciously she didn't find the idea of getting pregnant from Leonard a bad thing.   Just thinking about the things of Leonards that she hung on to even during the time when they had broken up and they were seeing other people shows that Leonard has held a special place in her heart for her long before she even realized it.

Fair to say that Penny is a complicated person - probably one of the reasons we like her and are fascinated by her.   Keeping a pregnancy test strip for a relationship with a guy she waffled about breaking up many times - complicated.  I can't imagine that she was secretly hoping to get pregnant by Leonard with her huge commitment issues, which have persisted for 6 seasons.

 

But... only the writers know what's in Penny's head.

Near the end of the show, after finding out that Leslie and Leonard broke up, Penny says "Oh, oh that’s too bad. Well hey, don’t worry, I’m sure there is someone out there who is just right for you." She then walks away smiling as she drags her arm across his shoulder at the end of the show.

Well, she's been fairly active sexually and so far as we know she has not ever been pregnant so she must have been have been damn careful. A pregnancy test is a sensible maintenance procedure. Like checking the dipstick. We know nothing about her reproductive health. She could be entirely normal or subject to all sorts of variability. Stress or poor diet for instance are known to cause amenorrhoea. A leap immediately to a conclusion that, by showing she wants to know what is happening to her body (and perhaps having to abandon her dream of acting), means that she doesn't care about getting knocked up just confuses me. I think girls have a reasonable concern all the time that their defences are working.

Eta. If her periods stop AND she is not pregnant, then she would best seek medical attention. Nothing at all like "irresponsible". Quite the opposite.

I said this earlier but one of the problems with the scene is it seemed rush almost hurried. Looking back a second time as much as I liked the Howard and the gang at the hospital IMO the song went a little too long. An extra 30 seconds with L/P may have made the scene better including the kissing.

Considering how long they've been together, she could have pulled a couple of other things out. I remember thinking the song went on a little. My memory of both times I've watched this episode (so far) was that the song was really cute for a couple of verses, then it just seemed to drag on.It even seemed that only Howard and Bernie were really into it. I also remember thinking this was just putting off the Leonard and Penny scene. The same with the Sheldon and Amy tag. I'm sure the Shamys were pissed with the bait and switch.

One really nice thing the writers did was emphasize how long Penny had been keeping these things. All of the artifacts were from early in the relationship. I got the sense the ticket home may even have predated their first sex. They could have cut a couple of verses from the song, and had her say something about the locket, or pull out something that was clearly recent, too.

I wonder if the pregnancy test was a throwaway line or something they will revisit. One can never tell with this show. It could be the tag was echoing "The Recombination Hypothesis".

I remember in S3 when Leonard was telling Penny the story about how he first met Sheldon, Penny was revealed to be using a pregnancy test when she was 18-19, "Yes not pregnant!" haha, awesome scene. So it's not like it's the first time she has had to check if she was pregnant, so maybe the whole birth control thing was just a throw away joke, a gag for the ep from the writer's, or maybe she bought them with other's guy and Leonard, as a precautionary to not becoming pregnant, we know about her commitment issues, so I doubt she wanted to get pregnant, maybe now's different. I don't see it as her being irresponsible, we already have seen she has been that in the past lol, just thing's from her relationship with Leonard, I mean women go on the pill or birth control or the time, not really a big deal.

I agree about the song. On the episode forum I sort of said the same thing about the tag and all the Shamys seemed to love it. I was accused of not liking the Shamy so on at least that part you may be wrong.

Let's not undermine other ship's on a thread that is primarily Lenny, yes some Shamie's deconstruct and take the smallest margin as a sign of progression. But Shamy is Cannon Shenny is an deconstructed idea it doesen't exist, so it's hardly an comparison. Beside's everyone's entitled to ship anyone they want based on their personal preferance, as long as it's in reason though haha. Regardless Lenny well always be the most important relationship in the entire series, always has been always well be.

What's wrong with the Shamy excitement? Shamy are awesome, how are Shamy's delusional? Their relationship is awesome and very, very interesting to watch develop. 

 

Anyway. Pregnancy tests aren't actually such a big deal these days. Most people on the pill don't take it as strictly as you should do. Penny's taken a few pregnancy sticks, woop woop at least she bothered to take them. Howard's song for Bernadette was amazing and sweet - we don't get to see much between them and it was so lovely that he done that for her. The box scene between Leonard and Penny was perfect as it was - any more than that and it would have been too much for them, I think that box is personal to Penny and Leonard understands that showing him everything in there may be too much for her. It was perfect just the way it was and the length of the scene was great. 

 

Makes me antsy that we have a few missing taping reports but I bet that's gonna be really exciting to watch in case there's any cheeky Leonard & Penny scenes with little things that get us all excited, like cuddling!

Birth control is not 100% effective. And it's a hassle to remember to take and at the right time each day. It doesn't make her irresponsible not to use it or forget to use it. I doubt she'd want to get pregnant just so Leonard would marry her, think that's a bit much right now!

Any user of medication misses a dose from time to time. I'm not off to get the citations but compliance is always an issue. Look at antibiotic compliance. Big problem. I'd be grateful if you would elaborate on your reasoning here. I'm not clear why using one or more pregnancy tests over six years is not maybe just a sign she is a normal person and is sometimes anxious about having become pregnant, rather than what you say.
