I don't think they would give Sheldon tenure. No one in any position of authority at Caltech wants to be stuck with him permanently. Also if they don't give tenure to either Leonard or Raj I really doubt they'd give it to Kripke. The interactions with Kripke work because he is on the same level as them, if he had tenure it would lose something. I really think they're either going to give it to Leonard or someone we've never met. After all it wouldn't just be the four of them up for tenure, and Leonard is of more value to the University, he can interact with donors, brings in grant money, and worked with Hawking.

IF they actually ever address the tenure question again (and I think that the fans are more hung up over it than the writers are), I don't think it will be a question of the reality of who would be a better asset or who would be stuck with one of them permanently as much as it will be a question of what would be funnier--with some lip service given to the idea of who makes a bigger contribution, etc.

If Sheldon is going to have a significant breakthrough in his work, that could be a reason to give him tenure--again, if they're actually still planning to folllow up on that story.

I've certainly gotten over the whole idea of tenure already.  I actually hope they more or less drop it--or give it to somebody else, including some random faculty person.  I think there are more interesting things for them to explore as far as their work is concerned than getting tenure.

The thing is Tenure is a BIG deal. It's not like all the other things they bring up when dealing with the University where it doesn't really matter long term if Sheldon got time on the new computer or if Leonard's experiment worked or whatever, Tenure would seriously impact the group whether one of them gets it or not, hence why it got an episode all to itself as the only story-line.

Tenure is a big deal and I think TPTB said it would be addressed again later in the season.  They are probably trying to figure out the funniest story before they decide who gets it.  The reason I could see them giving it to Sheldon is because he has already been fired once and has gotten into hot water several times, so tenure would give the character more job security and most importantly it would make him even more insufferable.

But at the same time that would eliminate a bunch of possible stories or jokes about not pissing people off at the University. And also they couldn't have someone say that they would have given Sheldon Tenure if they weren't all horrified by the thought of him never going away.

What if much of Sheldon's work was disproved by the expedition that Leonard just came back from?

Or just Leonard haha, I think one of the big reasons Sheldon has changed alot is his work as been diminished. Even Kripke had better work, if Sheldon got tenure or his work got some praise or recognition like Leonard has been getting, the antagonist Sheldon would return. But personally like to see for a whole anyway a new cocky Leonard more reassured, it is going to be interesting because Sheldon has always devalued and undermined Leonard's work, but he is having more success of late so Sheldon is going to hate all the attention he is getting haha.

It would most certainly be entertaining to watch.

Sheldon's "thing" is his intellect. That is what his identity and self-image revolve around. For him to lose, even symbolically, the title of "smartest person in any room, no matter who else is in it" is bound to make him question his own role and position. I would love to see how that would impact his interactions with the other characters, not just Leonard. His Kripki-induced self-doubts prompted a reflection about his relationship with Amy and their futute together. Only Zeus knows what being challenged by Leonard might provoke !

As for the aforementioned homunculus, getting an ego is sure to be an interesting experience. For a very long time, Leonard has had little to no self-esteem but being selected by Pr. Hawking himself and bringing back paradigm-shifting results from a scientific expedition may change that. How is he going to cope with being the new head honcho ? My guess is that he might go overboard with it. Like a kid being given a shiny new toy, Leonard may rip his new confidence out of its box and play with it until everyone wants to insert it into him. In other words, I sense smugness and gloating coming our way. Though it will not last for the writers cannot allow Leonard to catch too long a break... There will be a nice little comeuppance and, hopefully, a readjustment : Leonard needs to learn to be proud of his accomplishments, without getting overly excited. Balance, Dr Hofstadter, it is all a matter of balance !

One thing. There was no mention of Kripke making the short list for tenure.

Season 6 episode 20

Sheldon: I just found out that you recommended myself, Dr. Hofstadter and Dr. Koothrappali to be on the short list for tenure.

Janine: Well, despite your quirks, the three of you are very accomplished in your respective fields.

Found out from a couple of people who went via twitter the following. The reason they split into two days was because:

1. Most shows have 8-10 scenes, this one has 31 scenes
2. Tuesday taping only managed to lay three scenes to tape, one scene alone took over 3.5 hours because it was very complicated and involved a lot of camera angles. It also involved the entire cast.

That tells me that they have a boatload of scenes to tape tomorrow!

Kripke was at that Tenure meeting tho, shortist means consideration not actual guarentee they well get the tenure. Hence why they were trying to suck up to Janine haha, Kripke may have some connections that was implied in the tenure ep.

Actually that was not a tenure meeting. It was a memorial for Professor Tupperman.

Howard: You guys going to Professor Tupperman’s memorial?

Raj: I don’t know.

Leonard: Probably not.

Sheldon: Barely knew him.

Howard: Yeah, you wouldn’t want to look like you guys are brown-nosing the tenure committee, who will all be there. Oh, yeah, that’s what I was hoping for, meerkats.

There was no meeting shown during the episode. We only found out about the decision later.

Scene: Janine’s office.

Sheldon: I just found out that you recommended myself, Dr. Hofstadter and Dr. Koothrappali to be on the short list for tenure.

Janine: Well, despite your quirks, the three of you are very accomplished in your respective fields.

Yeah but their was still sucking up like Leonard's secret weapon Penny lol, so definately taking any oppurtunity to put their case forward.

But was only talking about his friends in contention, not asking about Kripke. His statement, and her answer, don't mean that Kripke didn't also make the short list.

Whatever the case, I still don't give the tenure story a lot of weight.

What if much of Sheldon's work was disproved by the expedition that Leonard just came back from?

I don't think that's going to happen, given what Lorre has said about Sheldon having a breakthrough. Besides, I don't think that the specific things the Hawking expedition was studying have any direct bearing on Sheldon's work.

All these scientist are working on STRING THEORY ... trying to prove it  .... but going about it in different ways.

Sheldon went at it from a point of view different from Kripke . His BEAKTHROUGH could be due to the work done in the North sea by Hawking's team (Leonard).

Tenure well hmmm Leonard should get it ... WHY? ... raises money for the University, Major science project ( North Sea), and his work with Lasers.

Some say he will get a swelled head if he gets tenure .... if he does Penny will bust his bubble and keep him grounded, anyway he is not that type of person, it will only give him confidence.

Now if Sheldon gets tenure  .... then for shure his head will SWELL and there will be no living with him, I'm not shure that even Amy can control him... bad thing .....

We'll just have to wait and see ..... LOL

OHHHH  ... never mind ...

The Lollypop Guild is reporting that they are taping this morning (wed) and this afternoon, as well as the evening taping., due to the large number of scenes (30-40). There is speculation about a scavenger hunt.

There is also speculation about a report that Howard and Amy will bond over something they have in common, someone suggested neither having fathers, I like that.

Both speculations are based on writer interviews AFAIK, not taping reports.

Thanks for the Info. I assume todays taping excludes audience. I really wonder what this episode will be like.....   very very curious I am :-D

The chant is that they are still taping in front of a live audience tonight, they just need to pre-tape because there are so many scenes. Someone is going tonight, so by tomorrow we should have some info.

Back to the Tenure Issue for a second. IMHO Howard who isn't a PhD, getting Tenure (for being an astronaut) would really put Sheldon in his place. It would give Howard a come back every time Sheldon Dumps on him for not having a PhD. Of Course I love it any time Sheldon is put in his place. Leslie Winkle did it so good, Dumb Ass.

Why Not! Howard was the First to be married and to a Girl who gets paid a Butt Load of Money. Why not have him be the First to get Tenure. Plus Howard has been the one who has helped all the other with their careers. His friendship with Stephen Hawkins has been beneficial to his friends.

On the Tenure episode though, Howard said something like "all the PhD's are gonna be on this" so it leads me to believe that only the PhD's get a chance.

I'm really surprised more was not made of him being an astronaut. It would be a great PR thing to have an astronaut on the faculty of a university. I could see them giving both tenure and an honorary Phd.

30-40 scenes ? For a 20-minute episode ? That seems like an awful lot, doesn't it ?

I wonder if this episode is not a two-part one. If not, I cannot quite see how that many scenes could possibly fit in such a limited amount of time without the end result looking very choppy.

A friend of mine only has a masters degree and he got Tenure after 25 years of managing a work study Program at a University. However Tenure Normally only goes to PhD.

I am surprised that none of the Genius are teaching a Class like Physic 101. Most universities will require there research People to teach a few Classes. Yes they have given seminars etc. But I am talking a regular College course.

Herb Garden & Love Car are two episodes I remember having many scenes, though not as many.

ETA: Regarding the Tenure system in the US Universities I really don't know how it works so I'm only guiding myself for what Howard said about only the PhD's getting a chance.

I am a Physicist but here in Argentina Tenure is automatic just by working on either a National University or Conicet (The National Scientific and Technical Research Council) and those are the only places where a Physicist would work, so, we have it easy :p
