I would definitely like to see more Raj and Howard scheming together, so pairing Bernie and Amy makes sense. One of the best episodes of last year involved Raj and Howard trying to figure out what Sheldon was doing in the basement room. I thought I was going to hurt myself when Sheldon fools them with the replacement video feed. I am fine with Leonard having a good time on the ship. I do not regard fun for him detracting from his relationship with Penny. It is not a zero sum game. When I think about Leonard over the years, he is like a mom in the sense that he is always "on". He is basically responsible for both Penny and Sheldon, and the poor man could use a break. On the boat, he can't do anything for either of them. In Sheldon's case, he is a grownup chronologically, so he needs to learn to function on his own. With Penny, it makes sense that she would worry about Leonard having fun, as insecurity with respect to Leonard, or any guy for her, is a new and uncomfortable experience. Logically, I'm sure she doesn't begrudge him a good time in a situation where she cannot practically participate, but emotionally she will see it as weakening her control over him. Regarding a hug between Penny and Sheldon, if this were to happen, it is not a big deal as far as either L/P or S/A are concerned. Sheldon hugging Penny is like hugging a sister, and he's made it clear that it is reserved for only the most significant of occasions. If he were to hug Penny for comfort, it would signal how important Leonard being gone is to him, ranking up with obtaining the DNA of Leonard Nemoy. Hugging Amy is a very different thing, as has been mentioned. It advances his romantic relationship with her. Hugging Penny advances no relationship. When we last saw the gang, it was smooth sailing as Penny told Leonard to follow his dreams and accept a position working on a North Pole research vessel for Stephen Hawking. However, in the first episode back, we'll get a peek into Leonard's life, and let's just say that things aboard the ship are less about thinking and more about drinking. Furthering the discussion of Leonard enjoying the trip, this a good thing. Leonard is on a career-defining research expedition. It bodes well if they are in high spirits as good things are happening. If Leonard spent his time moping for Penny, it would mean two things. First, he's not busy, and that's very bad. Two, he'd not be well-liked by the others on the boat, as he would be a downer. Penny has also kept Leonard at arm's length emotionally for the better part of six years. It is good for Penny to miss Leonard. Penny is the one with commitment issues, not Leonard. Even as recently as the bon voyage party, Penny was resisting any relationship upgrade. The current staus of the relationship that they are not engaged, just dating, and Leonard is not to press for any upgrades tot the relationship. Still seems a little tentaive on Penny's part to me. Now I'm sure if pressed, she doesn't want to lose Leonard, but what assurance has she offered him? He's done all the heavy lifting in the relationship. Let's see Miss Penny make the next move. As far as Sheldon missing Leonard, great. He treats him badly, and owes him a lot of appreciation. Maybe Sheldon can remember that, given his much vaunted edetic memory, when Leonard returns.
