The Shamy - Season 7 Spoilers Only Discussion Thread

ITA Lio. I also think that, besides the clever metaphors and symbolisms of "controllers lighting up", the kiss really represented, to me, the blending of new, passionate, physically affectionate, Sheldon with the usual, obsessive, nerdy Sheldon to a perfect degree. Because it felt like it was an exact 50/50 blend to me. It wasn't tipped too much one way or the other. Like I tweeted Bill about, it was proof they can pull it off: they CAN write Sheldon as an affectionate boyfriend who enjoys physical intimacy without losing what makes him "Sheldon", and really write the nerd version of sex/flirty talk with them.

I think at other times (like on the train) or in other contexts, Sheldon will get carried away so much in the kiss he can't think of anything else, lose track of its thoughts and get discombobulated. But that's not going to happen all the time. Not only it isn't true to the character, but also it isn't true to life. There's kisses and kisses and moments and moments, and while the idea of being swept away by feelings is romantic, it won't happen every time, especially with someone as obsessive as Sheldon whose brain goes at 200 miles an hour. If anything, this screams so much "normal couple" to me. It's like when Howard wouldn't stop babbling about space while about to have sex with Bernadette.

I agree with Andy that these were writers whose mantra has always been "Sheldon has to remain Sheldon". Which, to me, always sounded too dangerously close to Sheldon who never wants any intimacy and kicks and screams against it, making Amy come across as if she's strong-arming him into intimacy. The fact that they can write a kiss like this, outside of sweeps no less, is so incredibly promising and so beyond what I ever expected of them when I flipped tables on my way out two months ago after that Molaro interview saying "She will want more. Maybe they'll kiss after Date Night."

Maybe I was expecting too much, especially after the first kiss.

Well, sure, I think I've been trying to hint at that for a long time, but then again, who can blame anyone? We ship the couple, it can be hard not to get swept up in all of the fainting, flopping, fizzing, ovary-bursting, dying of excitement. Nevertheless, that's always the problem with letting your imagination run away with you. Instead of being the source of your joy, reality suddenly feels like a slap in the face.

And please understand, my comments come from repeated experience at it myself, not trying to sound holier-than-thou. I've just.....been there.

Litterally ditto Lio.  I love that they are different, they are not like normal couples cause I see a bit of them in myself and my own relationship.  They are evolving beautifully and I want to see it remain an organic process like we've seen so far.  Fanfics are nice but that's not what I'm looking for in the show.

I didn't touch on the controllers line in my previous posts, but at the risk of repeating what others have said, I thought it was there for a double meaning purpose as soon as I heard it and didn't detract at all from the kiss - in fact, Sheldon kisses her even harder after talking. And after (before? Have to watch again! :p) he says "Well they do", that flirty smile is even more confirmation.

I don't know, not every kiss is going to be extra dramatic or powerful or impactful (even though for me this is surely the last two), and as koops said, the simple fact that this kiss is out of sweeps speaks volumes. The writers are saying: "Here, have a kiss, these two do that now".

I'm sure we'll have more in the future and maybe one is coming at the end of the season that is more "plot driven", but I am enjoying this one immensely as well. I like that it's casual and that it's there in the middle of the episode, 30 seconds, boom done.

As for not confusing fanfiction with the show, I totally agree with Lio. There is lots of material out there and different strokes for different folkes, but I fell in love with Shamy after randomly watching on YT the famous "You're a vixen, Amy Farrah Fowler" scene. I will sound cliché, but that scene spoke to me. Sheldon and Amy speak to me. I'm not here to see them get down and dirty (well, as much as the next person, let's say lol), I want to see them grow together and their daily interactions with each other. As long as this happens coherently (and we're seemingly back on track now), I think I'll be fine. I really am now. :)

Actually, to wander into speculation central... Maybe the next stage for Sheldon will be going from enjoying HIS kissing to enjoying HERS?

I mean, intimacy involves both being in control and giving up control. Sheldon seems to have discovered that intimacy while he's in control is actually pretty pleasant. But he still hasn't experienced giving Amy control of this (either because she's not ready herself, doesn't know how, or what have you) and we know giving control to someone else isn't exactly something he is usually comfortable with.

Maybe one of the reasons she is written as not responding much is that there's going to be a whole other plot about Sheldon discovering he likes being on the receiving end of intimacy? Maybe that will be an even more powerful epiphany for him?

I think these are two pieces of the puzzle that need to fit together for them to enjoy intimacy at its fullest. And so far they only collected this one piece: kissing is pretty great with Sheldon taking charge and Amy enjoying it. They need the other piece for the puzzle to be complete. And maybe that's what the writers are planning to explore in the future. And when they're both well practiced and confident, they can turn the dial up some more.

Oh, that's a very interesting theory, koops! Didn't think about the control issue that much. I'll have to now!

I think that's the beauty of how much the first SIK really opened so many roads for Shamy; they could go in so many directions with it and from here I'm not sure what I want the most - well, okay, apart from the Amy-freaks-out scenario, that's pretty much my life goal these days. :p

Maybe this could relate to what the psychic said, too. Letting someone take control (especially when it comes to intimacy) it's a great sign of trust, it's commitment, it's giving in. Hm.

Yes, great point about the psychic! This could be another meaning behind that scene too. There are so many directions this could go in, I'm quite excited. As long as they don't reset back to whining Amy and resistant Sheldon I'm happy with pretty much anything. Although, of course, I have a soft spot for the cold feet scenario :p

Amen to everything, especially the highlighted part. And the cold feet scenario. :p

I just watched the latest episode just now (I know I'm late) I just want to say that was the best episode of the season so far for me. In literally every scene I was not just smiling or chuckling a bit I was laughing out loud at everything!

I like the idea of Sheldon eventually having to deal with Amy kissing back, or kissing him outside of the parameters of the RelAg, like she did with that very first kiss.

She's so careful to be considerate of his physical issues, like politely reminding him of the apparently new date night kiss policy, rather than grabbing him and initiating it herself or whatever. And in best buy when he's crying as they're leaving, she wants to pat him on the back or something, but she restrains herself, again, apparently in consideration of his sensibilities, even in distress.

So I think it could be interesting if they deal with that aspect where Amy eventually starts to really kiss him back, putting her hands on him--even if it's just his waist or shoulders, let alone running her hands through his hair, or touching the back of his neck.

Interesting... ;)

Since I missed most of the great parts of the conversation, let me just say yes to all! Getting lovely feels from these posts!

What drew me to the Shamy ship is the very fact that they are two people inexperienced with the romantic side of themselves. Shamy is actually my first sitcom ship. Most of my ships before have been and are anime ships. The kind of relationships I'm drawn to are those that have this tension in them. People who are set in their ways or seem tough or don't like to express their feelings are what I like. (Just to give some examples, if you have actually heard of these anime, any main couple from a Rumiko Takahashi anime is the sort that I really like.) It's something about the innocence and infallibility. Once a couple actually expresses what they feel and start getting way to lovey-dovey is something that makes me turned off. It's when we get those little moments that make us crave more........I don't know about how anyone else feels, but when it gets to that point when there is almost nothing left unsaid or done is when a relationship gets boring, IMO. I haven't watched too many sitcoms, but to me, Shamy is truly unique among television.

Something else that has been on my mind is the possible eventually of sex between the two. Let me re-iterate I do NOT think it needs to happen anytime soon, but I have been thinking about how it would possibly be written and I would like to get opinions. As some have mentioned, it's nice to fawn about it in fanfiction, but I have been really trying to think of how it would be written. I suppose it all depends on where the writers take us in the progression of their relationship, but what would it be right before it happens? Funny and awkward? Sweet and serious? Both? All we see with other couples on the show is the before and after, which obviously has to be done for censor issues? (not to sure about how far sensory goes, as I said, I haven't watched too many other sitcoms) However, this would be such a huge moment for this couple, I would hope they at least go a little farther into reactions. Any ideas?

I can absolutely relate to what you just said. Shamy is my very first sitcom ship and I've only shipped anime before (syaoran x sakura, winry x ed, etc.) I also agree about what you said that it's the little moments that makes us crave more. I guess that's the part about anime that you can see in the Shamy. It's very slow in terms of progress. It teases the audience with little tiny pinches of sugary sweetness. I think though, if it came to the point that the shamy gets really lovey dovey, I think I'd appreciate it more after seeing the years of progression they went through to get there.

I always think that previous behavior is the best predictor of future behavior. Or, in this case, previous writing is the best predictor of future writing. I imagine that when they will cross the line into consummation, it will be written very much like their two major milestones so far have been written (D&D and the first SIK): funny, awkward, sweet and serious all at once. I don't think they will cheapen it for laughs, but I don't think they will have angels sing from the sky while they engage in flawless, passionate lovemaking. I don't think they will make it a tear-jerker full of declarations of emotion, but I don't think they will write it clinically and detached either. I think they will let them take their time to get there so that they will have earned the right of not throwing in a punchline because of the fear to get too sentimental. But I think it will mean a lot for the writers as much as the characters, just like Molaro described the SIK.

As for the first part of your post, I agree wholeheartedly. If you get past all the issues at once, then it's not interesting anymore from a story POV. However, at the same time, they can't write couples as never getting past the issues or they come across as unhappy and makes people question why they're even together. I love anime too, (although I'm not a shipper, I'm more into sci-fi anime stuff and I've only shipped one couple other than Shamy before on TV) but I do think some anime have rather unidimensional pairings who never really learn just so the author can keep the "trope". It's possible to get past one issue at a time, while still having other unresolved issues to keep the story going and be compelling. That's why I'm enjoying the stage Shamy are at right now, and I don't feel the need to rush them forward right away, that's why I'm not sure an episode like Anything Can Happen was necessary at this stage. Could have kept them happy with their Date Night kissing, leaning and hugging for a while. We'll see where they're going with this, I guess.

I just want to say that after reading these most recent posts that you all make this show so much more enjoyable.  I ship Shamy.  But all of your insights and observations make this relationship so much more.  It is not only the observations of the scenes themselves but the characterizations and how everyone see something differently.  This is certainly a great place to spend some time!

Thank you.

Yes. And I've said why many times.

1) Everyone knows Amy wants Sheldon and wants physical intimacy with him. The question so far has always been, does Sheldon want the same? Him kissing her for ages, smiling and bragging about it, while she doesn't respond answers that question.

2) Haters think Amy is a sex starved lunatic who would do anything to get sex. This just shows them it isn't the case at all.  She just wants intimacy, and just with Sheldon. She's still an inexperienced virgin who will have to work to find her own footing in the sexual arena just like Sheldon.

3) It gives us more to look forward too. I have no doubt Amy will loosen up one day, sooner or later, and at that time I will sit back and enjoy it and love it in the knowledge that we have already had proof that her desire is not unrequited, due to the fact that Sheldon smooches her happily while she stands there like a cardboard.

Love this!

After seeing the kiss a few times, I was thinking they kind of look like a little old couple having a smooch, like my Nanny and Pappy when they would kiss.  It's sweet and simple but there is much behind it, and it made me wonder if Sheldon thinks of kissing the way he would see Meemaw and Pop Pop kiss.

Nothing is more fun that turning Shamy inside-out with fellow Shamys! :) Too bad it's so addictive you lose track of time, lol. Where did my week go?! :o

eta: I did not notice that Sheldon smirks happily at Amy when she walks through the door in the promo! Credit to whoever made this bigger gif.

I agree so much. There is so much more to an on-screen relationship when you start making in-depth analysis with other like-minded people. The best part about a show is the fandom!

I went to comicon like convention this week and I asked the artist at the gallery to draw shamy kissing (she was pricey but she draws cute stuff). She screamed in front of 20 people and hugged me telling me Shamy is the cutest couple on TV right now.

So I just wanted to say that I met a real life Shamy fangirl today and it was awesome. I told her to join us on this website ;)

Our convo:

"DID U SEE THAT KISS"

"I KNOW THAT KISS"

"THE KISS OMG"

"I KNOW THAT KISS GUHH I CANT EVEN"

"I KNOWWWWWW"

"THE BROWNIE TOO"

"I KNOWWWW"

"HANDS ON WAIST TOO"

"HAAANDSSSSS"

Yeah that went on for awhile. We fangirled hard at the convention.

SOOO Lucky.... I would LOVE to have a fellow Shamy

Shipper in the Flesh to hang out with.... or even to meet by chance......... and omg,... Ive only been on here for a few weeks ... but If she joins the site ..... it'll change her life... lol ... because of all of you.... i now know im NOT crazy ...
