This is one ep where Leonard looks slow-witted wrt Penny's feelings. She'd made a big effort to get him a first edition of his favourite book, and she'd forgotten that he already had one. So did Leonard really have to tell her that? Couldn't he just have accepted the gift as it was meant without crushing her? Of course the failure of the gift led on to showing Penny's portable Leonard museum, but I think it's also meant to show that Leonard although so smart is a clod in some ways.

We don't know he bought it while she was there.

Maybe he popped back later, on his own, and bought it.

And risk someone else buying it in the mean time? Why would he refrain from buying it while in her presence?

I don't think that was a big deal. In the same season Penny bought The Difficult Child and was laughing lol. So if were talking about feeilings. That is just as bad. I Don't think Leonard was being cold. He was just stating a simple fact. And yes this is a rehash of the Friends scene. Where Rachel shows Ross all the stuff that represented their relationship. But Friends was the original. So the matarial most of the ensembles like Big Bang, HIMYM e.t.c. Use or derive from.

I don't think she ever knew.

Penny can forget things. In 117 she knew Leonard's birthday, in 909 she didn't. Maybe TBBT is giving a message that drinking can damage your whatchercallit.
