I would suspect they are.

But Ununpentium was synthesized in 2003 and it doesn't really fit with Sheldon's field of work.

They do take a lot of artistic licenses with all of their work. Sheldon working with Raj or the fusion reactor proposal from last year was also a bit off his field of work. I guess they imply that since discovering new elements involves bombarding particles with other particles, that it is something a theoretical particle physicist could predict? I don't think the episode will be about Ununpentium itself though, I meant that they probably just were inspired by these news to write the episode about it.

That was bugging me too but I didn't want to bring it up. Perhaps it's a side project for Sheldon...

These people have an awful lot of side projects! LOL. Seriously. I think Mayim herself said that it sounds like Amy has at least 5 projects going on at once. I think they try to keep a bit of variety in the science and since they get most of their inspiration for the stories from science news they will try to put it it and try to sort of fit it within the field of one character. I thought the whole Leonard boat expedition was pretty random too.

....

I thought the whole Leonard boat expedition was pretty random too.

It was and only came up as a way to get Leonard off canvas so to speak.  How much have we heard about this trip since Leonard has been back? We only got one throw away line about it never to be mention again.  Howard in space got more mention than Leonard on the boat --- look at how much it was talked about on the show.

I was talking more in terms of science, than story-wise, but yes, even story-wise, I'm still not sure what purpose it served. I will refrain from making my mind up until we're more into the season, it could be that the repercussions will be more evident later on, or that there'll be some mention of his work coming up again. But, otherwise, it's not even about getting him off canvas, since it was during the hiatus. If the aim was to really get him off canvas, you would expect them to time it so that it's *during* the season, not in between. We saw more of Howard in space than Leonard on the boat.

One thing that I *think* (emphasis on think) it might have been thrown in for is that, perhaps, it served as a plot device to make Sheldon more independent/grown up so that they can pave the way for Lenny to move in together? I think the whole thing about him getting around on busses like it's no big deal now might be a hint of that? But maybe it's just far off speculation. I think it could have simply been a panic "Crap, what do we do for this season finale?! I know! Let's ship Leonard off!" kind of move. We'll see I guess.

I think it is just part of a pattern/formula to send him or them  away during the hiatus. Penny misses Leonard and they get on a better footing when he gets back. People speculate on how the separation will affect their relationship and want to see the season opener. I think they will have to come up with a different strategy for the next hiatus.

As long as it doesn't mean waiting 4 months for a proposal answer.

So looking forward to this episode for many reason's, cannot wait for some Lenny, but Sheldon having a showoff with his whiteboard should be epic lol, poor Sheldon he finnally make's some progress in his career, and the element could be wrong, Sheldon Cooper wrong what's this world coming too.

There's another sneak peak out there somewhere that's more of the conversation between Sheldon and Leonard with a few more seconds of Sheldon's "brain dance".

I'll see if I can get the link from the other site.

I can't seem to do it from my iPad (new op system... *sigh* ) but I'll try later from my desktop if no one beats me to it. It's on the CBs site and I think also at SpoilerTV, I think.

Here 'tis:

Me too, And i bought the flowers. :)

I hope they dwell on this carefree phase for a while. Let them be stupidly besotted again, so I/we can wallow, and not in the high drama.

Yay for the flowers! Me too. It's cute.

This is turning out to be such a great season, each episode, even though I've read the taping reports, brings so many cute and awesome surprises!

I think the whole was just a stunt to keep us excited on the outcome over the summer. What a disappointment if that is the case, of course they could use the trip as justification for Leonard getting tenure in a future episode.

While I sort of think this way, we can still see soemthing about this in futures episodes, right? The season is still young so I'm still hopeful.

IMO, there's no big difference between Leonard's trip to the North Sea and the gang going to the North Pole at the end of S2 in terms of the consequences of the trip.

For Leonard, there was the payoff that Penny missing him over the summer made her finally make the move with him, but for Sheldon's experiment, it was discussed in the season opener because of the tampering, but then it really wasn't mentioned again until a passing reference that you barely hear in the "foamy vengeance" episode.

It is its own story, but it doesn't have to be a season-long arc.  There was no promise that Leonard's excursion was going to be a life-altering event or anything.

Well, just because it's never been done before, it doesn't mean it can't/shouldn't be done. ;) I think longer arcs are always more fun, and Molaro is apparently into them (or so I heard last season), so it is a shame to constantly bring up plots that could have a lot of interesting repercussions and then just dropping them. I know the show doesn't do this a lot, and I'm not saying they should all the time, but every once in a while it is fun to do, just like they did with Howard's space mission and marriage etc.

All I'm saying is that if it turns out that we don't hear much more about Leonard's trip, that doesn't mean that the episodes were pointless or somehow bad.

Yeah, it would be nice if they bring back some mention of the science accomplished on the trip, but that doesn't mean that his life has to be altered or there has to be some monumental outcome from it just to make the episodes worthwhile.

Sometimes a season opener is just a season opener. :p

Just watched the episode!  I was ready to post about how sweet this episode was and talk about howard and bernadette, but then I saw the ending!  OMG!  I know it was just Amy in her "zone" but it was still so awesome!  So many shamy feels!  The writers were really teasing us with that one, lol!

my heart...it was worth being teased like that. My jaw was dropped as low as Amy's!
