There was a hell of a lot of drama in that episode, I didn't seriously watch the Sheldon and jokes part, the Lenny drama was so thick.  I wonder what the writers plans are now.  This would be a perfect prelude to a break up.

The only thing I noticed about Sheldon was that Amy wasn't too happy this episode.

Wow shit. I think everything turned out sadder than I expected.

Even the vanity card was sad. Poor Lexie she was so happy she got the part and when she posterd it on twitter, i remember we talked about her on the spoilers page

Wow. One of the best episodes ever. Loved it. Perfect balance of comedy and emotion. And I have to say kaleys acting was superb in this episode. Season seven is starting to turn around for me.

I am one of the few that is happy Leonard didn't accept the proposal, I looks like he would be taking advantage of Penny and I feel that wouldn't be right. Too much drama in this Penny arc and we are just getting started and I think Leonard learned something tonight even when someone say they want an honest answer --- it's not always what the mean.

Bernie fake laughing was awesome. Bernie had some great lines.

Johnny and Kaley just acted their butt off in this episode.  It was so emotional.  Just a wonderful episode for the drama - not for Lenny.

On a lighter note, Bernadette's semi-reenactment from When Harry Met Sally was hysterical...

Just watched the episode. I thought it was extremely well done. For a comedy there wasn't much to laugh about. I felt so sad for Penny and I couldn't believe how insensitive Leonard was. It wasn't a nerdy type of not knowing what to say, he was truly on a Sheldon level of insensitivity. I was really surprised it came out of Leonard's mouth. But it certainly would make me want to see the next episode for the outcome.

As for Sheldon's looking at comedy scientifically, I didn't think that was all that humorous. I'm sure the Shamy shippers will like seeing Shelly's underwear but the only funny line was Amy at TCF.

All in all it was a very odd episode in my opinion and yet as I stated at the beginning I still felt it was a very well done episode. I need to go watch it again right now.

Agreed with everything you said. It was definitely a Lenny episode. The rest was just filler. Bernadette's fake laugh scene was funny. I can see Sheldon's underwear being plastered on this forum. it was a sad episode for Leonard especially at the end when Sheldon was making more sense than him.

Of all the episodes to cut a sides character out... the irony is.. UNREAL.

If this was intended as a tribute/explanation to all those who don't get parts, I suggest the writers/showrunners spend more time in therapy to deal with their issues and leave us out of it.

The scene with Sheldon and Leonard was really sweet and did not seem fake or forced.  The acting all around in this one was top notch.

It definitely was sweet and heart felt. I'm giving Sheldon the benefit of the doubt and believe he was truly concerned for his little buddy and Penny. Even Sheldon wouldn't be so callous and fake that sincerity so perfectly just to play his kick me joke. The acting with all of the Lenny and Shamy characters was excellent.

Grade: A-

Great episode tonight, even though there wasn't much to laugh about tonight. I also felt so sad for Penny and I couldn't believe how insensitive Leonard was as well. Even though it wasn't a nerdy type of not knowing what to say, he was truly on a Sheldon level of insensitivity. I was really surprised it came out of Leonard's mouth. But it certainly makes me want to see the next episode for the outcome as well. I also have a feeling that this looks like this really is the start of a major L/P story arc that will go through the sweeps in February.

'The Big Bang Theory' recap: Penny and Leonard hit a major crossroads'

Raise your hand if you saw that one coming.

On Thursday's (Jan. 2) episode of "The Big Bang Theory," the first new episode of 2014, Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) hit a major snag in their

relationship after she asks a major question and doesn't get the result she was hoping for.

Well I must admit that this episode was far more dramatic than it originally sounded from the taping report.  I would have not known I was watching a sitcom to be honest.  It was far more drama than comedy this week.   I do think Kaley and Johnny did great in their scenes, but it was still sad to watch in a way.

As a Shamy fan, I honestly didn't care for any of their scenes this week.  I thought both were oddly out of character other than Sheldon trying to put a formula or scientific breakdown of a joke, but beyond that it was pretty lame and not terribly in character.   I love both to death, but honestly, they were not funny or amusing to me.   I found them annoying because they really made no sense in this episode.   Amy is usually on the same page as Sheldon, but they have taken her so far away from his humor (which she used to get and enjoy) that it is like a different person.

I do think (this is my best guess only), however, Amy's comment to him about "I don't think I want to go out with you anymore", along with some things (that are spoilers so won't state) next week are going to play into something in a future episode (an epiphany possibly for Sheldon).   But the pants dropping thing was very odd to me.  It still wasn't funny and seemed really out of character.  So did Amy's reaction.   I could see her looking then saying sarcastically "yeah, that was really funny" in a deadpan way but her laughing like she did, even though she looked adorable doing it, was not very in character to me.

The best part of the episode was Bernadette's laugh.  That was well done and I found myself starting to laugh with her because she was so infectious even though I knew she was faking it the whole time.   Well played!

Raj and Stuart continue to be pathetic.  They are making them almost too pathetic to even want to have sympathy for at this point.

I get why this episode was important, but boy, they need to lighten up some episodes after this one.  This one was a bit too heavy for a sitcom, IMO.

From the report, it doesn't get any lighter.

I do think, however, Amy's comment to him about "I don't think I want to go out with you anymore", along with Burt hitting on her next week is going to play into something in a future episode (an epiphany possibly for Sheldon).

That's kind of a spoiler, star! Please don't spoil me, you know it makes me cry.

As Tensor knows, I felt yucky after this episode. But after letting it sit, I know it's an important story to tell. I totally dug Kaley and Johnny's acting chops tonight, and got a tiny chill after Leonard tried to explain to her about how hard it was to become a star. So crazy watching celebrities talk about the struggle after they've made it, even if it's in script.

I don't have any complaints about the content or the acting, I just can't help but feeling melancholy because I hate it when Penny & Leonard fight. Great job by the cast and writers as always, but here's hoping the next episodes that follow get me laughing again!

Sorry tx!

I agree with your comments here though.   While difficult to enjoy this one, it was a necessary episode.  The only thing about it is that it does not leave you feeling good at all.  I just hope next week rectifies that and is very light because this is a situational comedy after all (not a drama).  It was just a bit too heavy in tone, but other than that the content was important and definitely well performed by Kaley and Johnny (and Melissa).

I liked this episode and I did not find it as heavy as many here have suggested. I can relate to Leonard in regard to trying to cheer someone up and having that go badly.

The funny thing about Raj is that he could probably meet women if he did it in the context of an activity he enjoys. He could take an advanced cooking class for example.

Wow. Could they have made Leonard any more pathetic. His efforts to console Penny were so clumsy, At least he did the  right thing by not responding to her proposal. Not looking good for us Lenny shippers. I believe the relationship has at the very least stalled and judging by taping reports of E13 it's not going to get better any time soon.

Rating the episode okay. Johnny and Kaley were good. Raj and Stuart were not funny and neither was Sheldon.
