What Happens When The Elevator Gets Fixed?

Okay, I know the odds of this ever happening is really, really low except maybe until we are in the finale? But if ever it does work, why would you think so?

 

I always felt that it being broken was some part of narrative in the story. It also gives way for the characters to use the stairs which gives them time to communicate and stuff. But even for one episode, I think it would be interesting to see that elevator working and what difference would it make to the story. Sort of like the Cooper Extraction Episode.

 

But anyway, in your personal thoughts with regards the show, do you prefer the elevator as it is until the end?

I always thought that it will be fixed in the final episode, and that it's revealed it was simple thing that was "broken".

 

Like that simple the powerplug was pulled out of the socket or something.

I think the elevator should get fixed, then the whole gang gets in and then it gets stuck between floors...

Unfortunately, an exploding container of highly volatile rocket fuel is not exactly "simple".

Sorry, but sometimes imagination is no match for reality. A fix for an exploding elevator simply can't be explained by something as ridiculous as "the plug was pulled".

I hope it gets fixed in the final episode when Shamy and Lenny happen to be moving out of the building. They see it's fixed but decide to take the stairs all together one last time.

California law requires a (WORKING) elevator if the building is over a certain number of feet tall.

I believe that height is any building 3 or more stories tall.

So in reality it would have had to already been fixed!

Very true. Suspension of disbelief often must come into play, be it a comedy, drama, or action. Of course, there's a pretty big difference between suspending your disbelief and hanging it by the neck until dead. :D

I think in the very last episode, whenever that is, the elevator should get fixed and Penny and Leonard use it, and it breaks again and while they are in there, Leonard asks Penny to marry him and she finally says yes.

You have to wonder how someone hasn't noticed yet. You think someone living in that building would have reported it. I mean how many floors are there? There has to be more people than just Penny, the black transvestite and Leonard&Sheldon. I think your right though and the sitars are just a way to force the characters to talk with one another.

Awww thats so touching I`m going to cry when they really do that because: I will miss the show so much after the last episode. I don`t wanna think about that now its too soon.

Most sitcoms, that have apartments, use hallways to allow the characters to talk to each other. (Think the guys at Cal-tech or in Amy's building or Raj's. This was a different way, something that hadn't been done before. As far as other tenants, Alicia lived on the fifth floor, Mrs Gunderson lives in 3A, so it would seem Mrs Vartabedian lives in 3B.

There's a nice thing in one of the BTS specials, I don't remember if it's from one of the DVD sets or from one of those specials you can find on youtube, where the set designer guy is talking about how they designed the set with the stairs but with the broken elevator in the middle to give them that big space between the apartments, etc.

 

But generally I try to make it a point not to "major in the minors" when it comes to things like this, the characters' incomes, the "realities" of their jobs, etc.

 

It's all just part of the premise of a comedy, not the details of a documentary.  There are always going to be ridiculous aspects, just like in any TV show--even dramas and police procedurals.  If you don't think you have to suspend disbelief in any scripted show (and even in the "reality" shows) then you're going to make yourself crazy.

I think the elevator being broken just gives the characters a chance to interact going up and down the stairs, which would be lost if they used the elevator, it may be a bit unrealistic that nobody has fixed it yet, but I think the most unrealistic part is that, with the exception of Professor Proton, nobody is ever tired after walking up and down all those stairs - I walk up the three flights of stairs to my apartment and I'm ready for a nap - and I do think that the elevator will finally get fixed in the seiries finale.

The stairway in TBBT serves the same purpose as the turbolift in every "Star Trek" series and movie: as a means of exposition. It's a way to get the characters to interact and cover topics without having to script some other scene. Just put them in the stairwell, give them some lines, and they're off to the races.
