Wasn't the last soft kitty with Mary singing to Sheldon?

That scene I only watch once, its creepy

tmp is correct--I'd forgotten that Sheldon sings it to Proton (was that just last season?)

But I don't find the one with his mom to be creepy.  To me, it's kind of like the "urtext" of Soft Kitty singing.  And I think it underscores some important things about Sheldon, his maturity (or lack thereof) and his relationship with his mother (along with Mommy Observation.)

On the one hand, he is, as she points out in Rhinitis Revelation, a grown man who must accept a different relationship with his mother--no longer coddling him like a child--but who will always be, as it is with all parent/child relationships, her baby.  As long as she's alive, whether or not he is, he will always be her baby on some level.

Now, it may be that they have to have a different relationship than the one they had when he was 8 or whatever, and he may be reluctant to let go of that familiar place, but that doesn't mean that he won't always be her baby (just like all her children.)  No matter how old your child gets, he or she will always be the baby you carried in your womb, the baby you nursed and changed, whose fevers you tended to, etc..  You never stop being a mother.

But the tables get kind of turned in Mommy Observation.  He now wants to insist he's a grown man, but when he is disrespectful of his mother, she pulls rank on him, if you will.  Again, no matter how old you are, you should show your parents respect, even if you don't like what they're doing.

So, now he's trying to assert his adulthood, but it's clear that he's still subject to his mother's authority.

And we know that his clinging to the Soft Kitty ritual is directly related to his mother taking care of him, singing it to him, etc..  I love the way Jim always shows Sheldon settling in when someone is singing it to him.  He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes, like he's trying to evoke that childhood time.

I don't find it at all creepy when it happens, especially when his own mother sings to him.

I think they were deliberately trying to come up with outrageous things. If he could actually hear them, it would have been funny to see how he would react. And since he couldn't hear them, they could say the most extreme things they wanted to, just to be funny.

Yes that's what I thought. I bet that scene will be very funny with Lenny trying to make up all these crazy stuff. That's a scene the facial expressions are pretty important imo and I love these scenes!

That's how I interpreted it too. The most outrageous things Leonard and Penny could think of to say about Sheldon that they knew would drive him crazy if he actually heard them while he had the headphones on and couldn't hear them.  Then when he removed the headphones, the most outrageous thing at the other end--Sheldon being a great roommate--which he did hear.

Was it the singing part you're talking about or the rubbing of the vapor rub? That part was a little uncomfortable I thought.

Why would either of those things be uncomfortable?

My mother once went into a young man's hospital room and held the bowl for him while he was throwing up because the nurses weren't responding to him.  That's just a mom thing.

She helped me change my bandages when I had surgery once, dried my hair for me when I got out of the shower at the hospital, etc.

When I had surgery in August, she helped me try to eat something when I was too groggy to feed myself.

Even my dad helped me, back when I was in college.  I had hepatitis and one morning I was too weak to even lift my arms so he fed me my breakfast.

I don't think that rubbing vaporub on Sheldon's chest is at all creepy.  Maybe if she was wiping his butt or something, but even that sort of thing you do for your loved one if they can't do it for themselves.

She was comforting him in a way that was a sort of ritual--tea, toast with the crust cut off, the vaporub and singing Soft Kitty.  It's just a mom thing.

It's not like she was trying to have sex with him or anything.

I don't know Phanta - to answer your question.  I just didn't care for the scene.  I understand what you're saying about the "mom" thing - I have 3 kids!  But I wouldn't be slowly rubbing vapor rub on my 19 year old son's chest when he is in no way incapacitated.  I can say that I currently have a bad cold and I do have this vapor rub stuff - and guess who puts it on me....me!  Because that is something that you really don't need assistance with.

I really dislike when the writers make Sheldon into a child.

Has anyone seen the movie "The Theory of Everything"? I can imagine Sheldon and Amy watch it together. I think it was good, I cried a little bit. It maybe something both of them appreciate, or maybe after the movie Sheldon would complain about too much romance and many hippy dippy things lol.

Yes, I liked it very much. I can totally picture Amy recommending it for date night. I think Sheldon would complain about the lack of actual science in the movie, because it's mostly about his relationship with his ex-wife and how his illness affected their relationship. They do discuss his research, but probably not enough to satisfy Sheldon.

"Sometimes, the baby wins."-Sheldon

This is who Sheldon has always been and probably until the show ends, we will continue to see it here and there. He's a unique soul who acts like a child at times and unfortunately sometimes, the people around him allow him to be that and treat him as such. Nothing we can do about it but watch....or not watch. LOL!

That's why I was glad when Penny talked Leonard into letting him take off on a train so he can man up some. Boy, has he been manning up this season, huh? ;)

Penny and Sheldon's mother rubbing Vapor Rub on a grown ass man....hell yeah that's weird. LOL. Not to the point that it's creepy...it's just more like, "WTF?? Do it yourself, you're not 5." LOL.

He is a grown man, but he missed a big part of his childhood, so I guess it's not so weird that he still behaves like that when he wants attention

I think Amy was just insanely frustrated with him.....I would be too....and unlike previous seasons, Amy now has a backbone....and when he said "or what"....she kicked him out.  Good for her!!!  I appreciate backbone Amy, again, they are now on an even playing field.  She loves him and takes him for what he is....but she is also done being his punching bag and will speak up for herself.  If something isn't going right, she is gonna speak up.  He was ruining date night and obsessing over the situation....

no permanent damage done, just more confirmation that Sheldon cannot take her for granted anymore.  Which I appreciate

I agree. I think Amy standing up for herself made Sheldon respect her more plus has has to up his game. She was a bit wishy washy in the past but maybe this is what Sheldon needed, someone not to coddle him

Decided that since I have writer's block, this would be a good use of my time. :p

I love your signature. Every time I watch Sheldon mouth along to the frame only one thing comes to mind

That is a panty dropper face, especially with those eyebrows. Hoo!

I have had such bad writers block lately.. I was googling things about Texas for one of my stories and some how I ended up on elephants. Then I was like how can I incorporate elephants into a Shamy story?...sorry for the tangent carry on.

tumblr_ncnb4zKVqD1qlrl8mo1_400.gif

a trip to the zoo, a conversation in amy's lab on the ethics of animal experimentation segwaying into the treatment of circus animals, sheldon having a nightmare of being an elephant who starts to choke because there are Brazil nuts in his peanut bucket and amy isn't around to pick them out... the possibilities are endless.

That baby elephant is so cute!

I watched (and DVRed, because I'm rebuilding my library of s8 episodes) First Pitch Insufficiency tonight.  It's one of my favorite Shamy episodes.  Sheldon arguing that his and Amy's relationship was the best made me realize how happy he is with the relationship.  He never would have said it a couple of years ago when he was still fighting his feelings for her.  Season 8 Shamy rocks!
