Ooo, this is interesting. I half agree and half don't.

1) Sheldon 'ruining' Amy's Christmas: See, this to me was a classic example of Sheldon trying to get what he wants without admitting it's what he wants. I thought it was an adorable and very Sheldon-y way of trying to 'back-door' romance into his Christmas, without letting on that that was what he wanted to do, because he's not a hippie and so on. Sheldon can be surprisingly conventionally romantic. I mean, an Amy screensaver? The tiara? That ginormous blingy ring? I think our Sheldon has a bit of a hankering for big squishy gestures, but you'll put him to death by torture before he'll admit it. And that was why he had to come up with this elaborate plan of 'punishing' Amy by giving her the most personal, thoughtful gift he could think of. I think I said 'Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww' without taking a breath throughout the Shamy scenes. Interesting to note that there's a completely opposite interpretation!

2) The Mars thing: I completely agree. In fact, here is where I would expect Amy to take a step back. This was a major breach, to me- far bigger than blurting out something silly during a makeout session.

3) Ignoring her during date night: Sigh. Yes, you're right. But-as much as I grin at the Relationship Agreement- I've always found that Sheldon tends to respect the letter of the agreement, rather than the spirit. The moments where he betrays that he needs/wants/loves Amy have tended to happen outside the parameters of the RelAg (that screensaver, going hilariously over the top with that tiara, making her his Emergency Contact, Prom Night declarations of love and so on). It's one of the things that makes me think the writers know what they're doing with this relationship. Sheldon can try to rigidly structure his romance, but the heart wants what it wants, when it wants it.

4) Mind wandering (along with hands-winkwink!) during their makeout session: awwww, come on now. It sounds like he breathed out one dumb question when he surfaced for air, and then went immediately back in. A very different thing from having one eye on the TV while they make out. Would I roll my eyes? Maybe.* Would I be tempted to give my partner a ding upside the head? Maybe. But would it make me reevaluate a relationship in which, after enduring unblinkingly years of monumental selfishness, I see that my partner is making a sincere attempt to move past his serious challenges and be a good boyfriend? I really, really don't think so.

* Although, to all intents and purposes, I believe that Amy's response should have been: 'Yes, you should watch Flash. Barry Allen is yummy.' I would enjoy watching Sheldon's face as Amy gushes over an attractive superhero.

Oh! I want to chime into this stream of interpretations.

1) The Xmas thing. I am somewhere in between your assessment and MT's assessment. I think that the Xmas gift was exactly like the tiara thing, just with the added feeling of 3 years of loving relationship added onto it. I think Sheldon's conscious intentions were totally about ruining her Xmas, but his subconscious can't help but think of all she means to him and get all mushy and pick the best present he can. And, every single time, it shows how much he gets her. In the tiara episode, all he wanted, on a conscious level, was to make her forgive him. But he didn't just go for whatever, he somehow managed to pick something that "would make her weak in the knees" and "show how much he gets her" (quoting Mayim's intent in that scene). Same thing in the Vday ep in S6: he gets Alex to pick a present for her because, consciously, he couldn't give a rat's behind about romantic gifts and he has better things to do with his time than shopping. But, when Alex comes to him with options, nothing is good enough. And so he picks something of no monetary value this time, but of huge emotional value. And she is moved to tears by it. Coddamit if Sheldon will accept anything but the best for his woman, even when the intention is to make her miserable. I find this to be one of the cleverest ways of writing the character to make him adorably sweet and at the same time a jackass. The writers get all sorts of props from me for this one. Having said that, and like we discussed, I also think that there may be a secret, really sappy side of Sheldon that nobody gets to see. And the screensaver and the engagement ring are examples of that. It's stuff he's done on his own, that nobody is meant to know about. It kind of reminds me of him keeping his Meemaw's letters in a box, locked away. There's a side of Sheldon that loves very deeply and probably fantasizes about expressing that in a way that for some reason he can't get through to the world, and that's why the whole thing of the engagement ring breaks my heart. I would have never pegged Sheldon for the type to propose in the traditional way, I always thought he would just whip out a Matrimony Agreement. But the fact that he envisions himself getting down on one knee and giving his girl a ring is something that blindsided me completely.

2) Agreed on that one, with both of you.

3) Ignoring her on Date Night. eta: wtf, the whole thing I wrote here disappeared :o I was going to say, If we are talking about Anxiety Optimization, I don’t think that really counts. That was sort of a specific circumstance. Yes, Sheldon gets “in that zone” sometimes, and it’s just part of who he is. But I think that there are also tons of other Date Nights when she has his complete attention, and they have a wonderful time together. We saw some on screen, but I’m sure there’s more off screen. I wouldn’t take the occasionally failed Date Night as a template for all their Date Nights.

4) I mostly agree with you, except that I don't totally blame Amy for being upset, because, like I said, I think it's the cumulative sum of doubts she's had for a while about this particular area of their relationship, coupled with her inexperience. I am allowing her the benefit to be emotional and vulnerable and hurt at that because I do agree that emotional reactions are not rational or timely or proportioned to that specific instance. And also because I believe that the issue here wasn't whether Sheldon was giving her what she wanted, but rather whether he wanted what he was giving her. That's the last big elephant in the room and the last mystery to be solved when it comes to Sheldon: does he wants or does he just accepts? Plot device, for sure.

Agree. Kazzie! AND YOU HAVE JUST SEEN IT :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:

a little question: What color was wearing Amy during the skype? Thanks, lucly girl!!!!!

It was a sort of yellow/tan outfit. I think there are some photos of the cast on Twitter and Instagram where Mayim is in that costume.

Im not good at writing essays. So I'm going to keep it simple.

Face sucking. Sheldon has a ring.

To paraphrase Amy: "Now we know what it looks like. And they can never take that away."

I've been thinking about this all day but I didn't have access to internet so here it goes...

How can Amy think that Sheldon doesn't desire her sexually? In the Prom episode,Amy finally shows some clevage and Sheldon gets a panic attack!

The poor guy wanted her so much he got a freaking panic attack!!

Sure he said he got a panic attack because of the pressure, but if he didn't want her he wouldn't even be pressured.

I'm just curious as to where is that even coming from (the bit about her not believing he desires her sexually I mean)? Didn't they pretty much discuss it with each other in the D&D episode?  Sheldon told her that he never desired anyone in that way until he met her, in which he told her, "I've not ruled it out" or whatever. LOL.

So, I can assume that they both came to an understanding that Sheldon just needs more time to get to that point to where he's ready to hop in bed with his lady ;).

Evidence seems to suggest that these days, he's almost there. So, if Amy doesn't see that, I'd say she's blind. LOL.

Amy knew what she was getting into when she got involved with Sheldon. She knew of all his quirks, issues with touching, etc. and she had learned to accept that.

Sheldon also knew what he was getting himself into when he asked Amy to be his girlfriend. He knew that, although they were practically twins when they first met and had the same views on romance and sex, that her feelings for him were growing and she was starting to desire things from him that maybe she was against before.

With that said, unfortunately for Sheldon who doesn't see how what he did in this episode was offensive (I personally can see both sides), he's going to have to learn to bite his tongue at times when he's having romantic moments with his girlfriend and just be in the moment with her instead of thinking of The Flash. Just like she's had to learn not to be pushy with him with sex.

Position wise, they actually looked almost identical to when Lenny were kissing on the couch in Colonization Application, right before Leonard told her about the sex paint lol. The only difference is Sheldon's hand is further up on her thigh. And he's taller, of course. But the actual kissing (and keep in mind we only saw it once and all our brains were short-circuiting) was long and continuous with lots of head movement and lip movement. I can't say whether there were breaks where their mouths would part and go back in, I'm blanking on what their actual lips were doing! But there was definitely movement. When Michy said this is NOTHING like the two previous kisses and that they've graduated, she wasn't kidding. This isn't just lips pressed together, everyone. They were both really into it. And it might be the hottest thing I've ever seen.

I haven't caught up on the whole convo yet (long day!), but I think they both ruined each other's mood. Sheldon first, and then him ruining her mood ruined his mood. But since Sheldon is clueless he doesn't get what he did wrong. I even think Penny's advice didn't quite help, because I think with him you have to be direct. To tell him "You need to focus on her", he takes it literally. But the more... explicit version of that question, and more to the point, is not the way people usually say it, and that's why Penny didn't say "dude, if you're making out with a someone, they want to know you like it/them and are getting arousal out of it/them." And I honestly don't think it was the Flash comment itself that made her step back, it's more I think a cumulation of doubts she's had for a long time, about whether or not Sheldon is sexually attracted to her. That's the bottom line. And, in the bigger picture, whether or not he wants the same thing she wants out of the relationship.

I just wish they made it clearer it's about this and not just about the pace. Because it's one thing to have a plot where Amy is insecure about whether Sheldon wants her fully and completely as much as she does, it's another to have one where she's just fed up with waiting. The former, I can definitely get on board with. The latter just makes her come across as if she wants sex/romance more than she wants Sheldon and is totally contradictory of Prom "Of course I understand" Amy and disregarding all the progress they made so far. It also really bugs me that they use "5 years" as the timeline, to make it sound like she has been patient for 5 years when, really, they weren't even officially dating until 1.5 years after the first time they met, and for a long time they were on the same wavelength about this stuff.

I mean, to me the dialogue seems to imply the former, more than the latter. Because she doesn't want to just continue kissing him, when she thinks he doesn't want it. And later the dialogue with Penny and Sheldon she's telling him about "focusing on her". I kind of feel the "pace" thing is actually thrown in there more as a plot device to trigger the Lenny plot. Because if Amy hadn't brought up the pace, then Penny wouldn't have said he's going slow either and Sheldon wouldn't have been able to turn the tables on them and force them to pick a wedding date.

spot-on, koops. I agree that the issue of pace was shoehorned into the conversation to jump-start Lenny's plot. Pace has hardly been an issue this season for Shamy.

I am both cringing and giggling at the thought of Sheldon being forthright about his desire/arousal. 'I have devised a rating system for my state of tumescence, Doctor Fowler*, and the current state is at eight point three recurring out of a possible ten.'

And I am in violent agreement that though it's interesting to explore Amy's insecurities in this manner, I wish it had been done better.

* No, I have not given up my notion that the two of them refer to each other by their academic titles.
