[Spoilers]Shamy S8 Thread

Recommended Posts

LOL Maddie, I'm sorry but one of my biggest pet-peeves would be someone getting a Nobel on the show, unless it's in a flashforward. It just does not happen to people in their 30s and it would be absurd if it did for theoretical physics in particular :p

Another, probably unpopular opinion, is that I'm kind of bored with the paper thing. And I admit it's mostly out of annoyance that I really want to see Sheldon work with Amy, rather than with Leonard. Not because of any romantic connotation at all, but purely from a stubborn female feminist/scientist perspective. I am kind of bored with the women being relegated to having an impact only on the romantic lives of the guys. I think it would be awesome to have Amy make an impact in Sheldon's professional life (or viceversa), and they're really the only couple that could do it on the show, since obviously Penny and Leonard can't work together (for obvious reasons!) and Howard and Bernadette can't either because their fields don't overlap at all in any way (unless I guess they start building chemical weapons! but I don't think this is the show for that). Also because it mirrors so well the Curies, who we know Shamy admire so much, and this year Nobel's prize in Physiology was a married couple too, so it's hot science topic! I was hoping there would be a sign because of Amy collaborating with Kripke but nothing yet. That's honestly the top of my wish list for the show, I want that more than anything at this point!

#UnusualDemands

I would give anything for this to happen season 9. I always thought that when the psychic said "personally and professionally," Amy would contribute to Sheldon's work or or vise versa or maybe even formulate a new theory together. I love Shelnard, but Shamy working together would be amazing.

Koops, a lot under 35 won the Nobel as theoretical phisicist ( Dirac, Heisenber ,Brian Josephson etc)

I use to think like you, but I checked the list and it is sooo long....!

But IMO if there is a Nobel in TBBT it is far far away!

Omo that is so similar to how they looked. (Except I couldn't see his hand on her thigh thanks to a camera) but her hands and the way they were kissing is on point. Hoo. I need to see this again now

I think the singular thing I remember about the kiss is that there was lots of movement. Like head movement. It was intense. Everything else -- lips, duration, open mouth, etc. -- I'm having trouble remembering. I just know their position because they continued that position in the pick up until Sheldon got up. :p I feel pretty confident in saying its close to that Rachel/Joey kiss though.

Yeah, that's not what I meant at all. That one liner is just the punchline. My throwback referred to the fact that the raw awareness of not being good enough for her was already present back then and being scared she was going to leave him. And right after this he went to beat up Wheaton for her. Sheldon. Beating somebody up. That's just mindblowing, that the man who runs from everything would beat someone up to defend Amy's honor. Not to mention Amy was the one who was a complete jerk in this episode. Sheldon does amazing stuff for Amy too. I think this episode is such a great example of that.

Yep.  Again, this relationship isn't as one sided as some make it out to be.  I am glad Sheldon went to defend her after Wil called her a name.  But outside of that, Amy was unnecessarily acting like an ass here.

I disagree with this. At this point Amy has to understand who she is with. That kind of stuff is not going to work with Sheldon. She may think it sounds nice and sweet when other people do it and that is fine. And I can even understand her saying to herself every once in a while that, "hmmm, I wonder if Sheldon could ever say stuff like that." However, I don't think it is fair to Sheldon, or herself, to want to force that kind of stuff out of him. That is not who he is and she should know that by now. It won't have the desired affect coming from Sheldon to Amy as it did coming from Leonard to Penny. It just won't. It's not true, or honest. And btw, Sheldon's unconventional or unexpected romantic gestures tend to take her breath away. Like Jim said once, "he knows what'll get her."

Also, on the survey, it is not a strictly romantic relationship inventory, so the fact that you and your friend scored well still lends it credibility. I would be correct in assuming that the two of you are happy in your friendship, right?

If everyone agreed with me all the time life would be pretty boring.

Sheldon Cooper does not need to spout flowery poetry to Amy. What Amy wants is to be thrown a nice word or two once in a while, not mocked, not treated as an afterthought and not made to feel bad because she wants some semblance of attention from her boyfriend. Is this too much to be expected from a boyfriend? Even if it's Sheldon Cooper? Does she not deserve to be treated with respect?

My friend and I are quite compatible. My husband and myself more so. The difference is that my husband and I are are in a romantic relationship. Amy and Sheldon are also in a romantic relationship which Sheldon initiated. The progression of most romantic relationships is towards intimacy. So while compatibility is a good step towards a long lasting relationship, there is a romantic component at play here as well. One that Sheldon chooses to ignore when he chooses to.

I don't think he chooses to ignore it, I just think the way he expresses romance is different than is conventional.  And I think some aren't giving Sheldon any credit here.  He has come far and has progressed towards intimacy.  We just have to remember his starting point isn't the same as most.  This kinda goes back to that theory of continuously moving the goal posts on him as mention by Koops and I believe Maddie.  As soon as he makes a move forward, it immediately becomes not good enough.  He will never catch up if that is the case.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks Amy was out of order!

Maddie, Kazzie, Maria, please!

what kind/color of t-shirt was Sheldon wearing durig the skype? Thank you!

Oh man. Pretty sure Amy was wearing like a yellowish mustard vest. As for Sheldon, he was wearing his usual layered shirts. If I had to guess the color I'd say red, but I'm really not sure!

Completely agree, Koops. :)

I also just wanted to talk about some things I really loved about this episode.

I think the biggest thing with the tag, aside from just the rawness between them, is how Sheldon understood and respected Amy's wishes. And this ties into "when did he buy the ring" debate. I love that when he saw she was heading towards a break with him, he didn't try to quickly propose or use the ring as a quick fix. Which makes me think he's had the ring awhile. Now, I know there will be some division on when people think he bought the ring. In this episode, it was thrown in his face by Lenny that the reason they're committed and moving faster than Shamy is that they're engaged. However, something about Sheldon quickly going out to buy a ring in one day just because that's what Lenny are doing seems unlikely for him. Also, when he made fun of the ring Leonard bought in 8.23 also makes me think he's had it awhile. But I don't know! It could really go either way.

But back to my original point -- Sheldon's purpose of buying the ring was not to quickly fix the relationship. It wasn't to make her stop being mad at him. It was really because he legitimately wants to marry her. And you can see that in the final scene as he accepted her wishes to take some time. Huge maturity on his part. I was telling the other girls that even though this definitely isn't a break up, it must feel like it to Sheldon as he sat there and wondered what he was going to do. He seriously looked completely stunned and like the wind had been knocked out of him. I don't think for a second he ever thought she was about to take a break. I don't think he imagined she was struggling this much, if at all. Because in his mind he's doing great! So no, the ring is definitely not a quick fix. If he had just bought the ring, then I imagine he'd already been thinking about it awhile. He just doesn't make impulsive decisions like this.

But I love that he's putting her first. Respecting her wishes, giving her time, and understanding that this isn't something that will be fixed with something sparkly and expensive. He didn't just go out and buy something pretty to get her on his good side. He just really wants to marry her, people! If that doesn't make you emotional, I don't know what will, haha.

Speaking of emotional, Amy was very close to crying during the Skype call. Her voice got shaky as she said "This is so hard because I love you." I think everyone's stomach just dropped. It was definitely the most emotional scene they've had so far. And it was superbly well done by both Mayim and Jim. They nailed it.

I love that throughout the episode, even when the focus was on Lenny, you see Sheldon in the background on his computer, presumably trying to reach Amy. He was distracted on his phone while the three of them were eating dinner, and even just in his body language you could tell he was worried she wasn't responding.

He was fondly thinking about his aunt and uncle who'd been married so long. Also, he had the biggest, cheesiest smile on his face when Lenny decided to elope in Vegas. He told them how happy he was for them.

During the kissing scene, they had their hands on each other the entire time. Even when they stopped kissing and Sheldon asked about the Flash and she asked if that's really what he's thinking about. Only when he went back in and she stopped him did they take their hands off each other.

Yep. Maddie is trying to kill us. LOL.

Actually, the test is designed to predict the longevity of a relationship based on behavior, on things such as closeness, compatibility, sharing interests, sharing important and personal information, spending time together, valuing the partner's input and opinion on your own opinion and so on. The point precisely is that if you get a high score on that test, technically, the relationship is predicted to last longer. Which is why it doesn't make much sense to say "You might be getting a high score now, but what you want might change" in the context of this test. The reason why the test was in the episode was to highlight the difference between the two couples in a very clever way. Lenny are the feely couple, based on infatuation and attraction and passion, whereas Shamy are the brain-couple, based on common interests, similarity and intellectual compatibility. Shamy likely score higher on that test, therefore indicating a longer potential for longevity, because the test does not really give a big weight on feelings that are rather "transient" like passion and attraction. As much as we want to think of relationships as something fundamentally dependent on romance and passion, those two things are also the things that burn brighter and faster, and once that candle goes out, if there's nothing left, the prognosis for the life span of a relationship is not good.

And that was Penny's concern, and I thought she had very valid concerns and Leonard's statement did really nothing, imo, to address her concerns. All it says was "I have no answer to that question, but I still want to do it with you." Now, some might find it romantic and moving, but to me it sounded really empty and cheesy. And that's probably why I don't ship Lenny. And I was totally on board with Sheldon's "Trust me, you're happy". Because Shamy already have a lot going for them to predict long-term stability and satisfaction, other than transient feelings. And I also don't think it would have been genuine for him to turn around and suddenly sprout out a cheesy line on the spot just to keep up with Leonard's. It would have made no sense in that context. Shouldn't stuff like that be spontaneous and from the heart? Otherwise, what's the point? I also think it's unfair to say Sheldon never says deep, moving things to Amy. His pragmatic, thoughtful declaration of love in Prom is the biggest example to me. He was like "I love you. I analyzed my feeling long and hard, and I've come to the conclusion that there's no other explanation for how I feel about you.". That, to me trumps Leonard's sweet nothings 100 times. And it was enough to give Amy a panic attack

I honestly don't think there's that many "red flags" this season to forecast such a dramatic finale. Because I think the red flags were far far less than in previous seasons and the happy flags were far far far more numerous. We also have to keep in mind that the writers have "milestones" in mind for the characters, but don't really know how these milestones will look like or when they will happen until they write them, and they don't plan that far ahead. I seriously doubt that that one tiny line in an episode where Shamy was otherwise on cloud 9 that happened at the very beginning of a season was foreshadowing for the finale that at the time was not even in the back of their minds. In fact, at the time they hadn't even thought about Prom and they didn't even know they were going to put the ILY into Prom until they were in the process of writing it and it came out naturally. I think the writers are trying to make some kind of point/change gears here right now and they simply thought "what's the best way to do it to get the biggest impact?". Like in Vday last year, where first they had Sheldon kiss Amy out of happiness on the train, instead of anger, they obviously thought that a dramatic finale would drive whatever point they are trying to make home better than a happy finale. And I totally agree with them on the train kiss. Without the anger you don't get that clear, obvious realization that Sheldon melts into the kiss and is loving it, in the same way you would have had from a happy/euphoric kiss. I think maybe here it's the same thing. But it does stick out a bit more than it would have in previous seasons, IMO.

You know compatibility with your partner is nice. It can predict if you will be in it for the long term. Amy and Sheldon have a life sentence together no doubt about it.

While going through your life sentence wouldn't be nice if someone paid you a compliment once in a while? That someone wanted to hold your hand of their own free will without complaining about it? Kissed you and actually said that they liked it? Oh but wait that is too much to expect from Sheldon. She knows who he was when she agreed to be his girlfriend.

As for Lenny, Penny didn't offer any real solutions to their predicament either. Leonard said they would tackle it together. Their love for one another is the only tool they have to keep their romance on track. But they are trying.

Prom was indeed wonderful. Amy was going to let Sheldon off the hook again, but he stepped up and finally validated Amy's feelings. Panic attack indeed.

The red flags I mentioned in my original post which stemmed all these responses, was simply pointing out that it was very timely that after watching the finale that the two couples were struggling with the same issues. It only dawned on me as I watched it that it was foreshadowing the finale, which may or may not have been on purpose. I recommend watching it after watching the finale. It was chilling to me, especially how Amy's face looked on both episodes.

I don't comment on the boards very often, I must say it has been...interesting.

I went through my calendar and every Tuesday put how many weeks until the likely first taping date, Aug 11.  Right now we're at 15 weeks and a couple of days.  I don't deal well with cliffhangers.  Last year's had me such a nervous wreck, I didn't watch the episode until about a month after it aired. Does anybody have any suggestions for keeping sane until we find out what happens next?  I almost feel like I need to write some fan fic for the first time ever just to get a sense of resolution.

I've been thinking about writing my first fanfic, but I figure I would spare everyone and suffer on my own, lol.  I am really anxious for the premier taping because it's looking like I am gonna go.
