I think Amy wanted flowers, not a mushroom log for VD!

Flowers for his mother and a log for his girl friend! Come on!

I know Susana, I would be disappointed too, if my boyfriend gave me a mushroom log instead of flowers, but Rachel is right, Sheldon wanted something that lasts longer, something that says, that their relationship is as strong and long lasting as a log of mushrooms. Sheldon always gave her presents which lasted longer than a glimpse. And all his presents were meaningful. The emergency contact ( it means "I want you to be there for me and to take care of me" imo), the tiara ("You are my precious princess", I mean it was not a toy tiara, he bought it at the juweller, so it must have cost a fortune, which in my eyes means, she is precious for him, plus the fact, that princess corncob was on his pet name list) and the mushroom log (our relationship is as steady as this log of mushrooms and it will last long). But I think Amy´s problem is, that she often compares her relationship with Sheldon with the relationships of their friends and what they might think of them.

Remember that she felt ashamed when they were making fun of the fact, that Sheldon even in their role play was not willing to have sex with her. She is still so insecure, that she has compares her relationship with other relationships and that is the problem. I hope that one day, she gets completely over it and says proudly: "I don´t care what you all are saying, because I have the best relationship ever, it may look awkward from an external view, but we love each other deeply and we are happy together every single day of our life, because we enjoy the company of the other and are proud of our unique and quirky relationship."

On the other hand, watching the cold open, Amy does seem to have tension building within her. When Sheldon commented about beating his sister for the potty award, her reaction was one of "not again" as if she is getting tired of the way he expresses himself. Then she voiced her disappointment in not getting flowers but sarcastically mocked the mushroom log. She did not seem happy at all.

I hate that as Sheldon is coming out, she is retreating as if everything he says and does irritates her.

What happened to the Amy who loved his quirkiness? Is she giving up on him? Perhaps this is why she needs to re-evaluate their relationship. She has been so focused on her romantic expectations, understanding has gone out the window, and she has fogotten the things she loves about him.

It is heartbreaking.

I totally agree !

A log is a piece of a dead thing too!

Amy has always been a romantic girl. She wanted she and Sheldon as Cinderella and the Charming Prince, as Juliet and Romeo  (6 x5). She wants a "normal" boyfriend (6 x 17), she wanted to be kissed as Snow White, she loves Jane Austen and medivial literature, she always have flowers printed on her dresses! Of course she loves the tiara: " I am a Princess!" she said , She thinks the RA is romantic and the Emergency Contact awesome!  Why she can´t have flowers, or a romantic  silly thing,at least once?

Of course she knows the boy friend she has and that he loves her, but her girl in love soul wants a little piece of "normal"romance. Is it bad?

I can kind of sympathise with Amy in the flowers v. log situation.

I never had a boyfriend during high school, and didn't get one (or date anyone) until almost my final year of university. Our first Valentines together was only shortly after we officially started dating, so I didn't expect anything as I'm the kind of person who finds it hard to accept that people actually like and want to be around me. This year however, after we'd been together for over a year, I was hopeful he would get me a red rose simply because no one other than my mother had done that before on Valentines Day. He got me a couple of other things and I certainly appreciated it, but there was still that part of me that was a little disappointed because for once I wanted to be part of that tradition.

That is probably how Amy felt, disappointed that she couldn't be part of that tradition. It doesn't mean she didn't appreciate his gesture at the time, though. I think she just let her disappointment out in that situation because Sheldon was happy to give flowers to his mother and not her; she was letting him know after the fact that she wasn't entirely happy.

Of course she is a woman who is seeking romance like we all want, but she also knows that Sheldon is not the typical romantic prince charming, she wishes he would be. Sheldon would have bought her the whole tree if necessary, but first it doesn´t fit in her apartment (lol) and second, the log was once part of a tree, and trees mean life. But the log is not the symbol Sheldon was referring to he was referring to the mushrooms and as mushrooms grow on trees, he bought some with a log. Unfortunately, Amy didn´t get the message, but I think she will one day. I really hope, she and Sheldon will speak soon about what´s going deep insight of Amy, so Sheldon can show that he is willing to do better.

Sheldon can´t read minds (but he told Penny once that he wished he could), so she just has to say right away what is going on in her mind.

Also many trees and mushrooms are symbiotic and help each other grow and sometimes their roots actually grow together, providing nourishment and protection. And to me that sounds like a great metaphore for lifelong partnership, and something Sheldon might interpret as poetry.

It almost feels like the writers have taken a hard left with Amy..she thought the Relationship Agreement was romantic, she was beside herself over the tiara, she swooned over the Valentines contact information gift...the mushroom log would have been right in line with how Sheldon expresses himself through gifts, but suddenly no...she is all eye-rolling and impatient....I don't buy it....I think more was on the whiteboard for the writer's with regard to the Sheldon-Amy dynamic leading up to the finale, but due to Mayim's personal crisis, we got the shorthand version of how we get there...and maybe after the issue is resolved, we will get more detailed about what those last few weeks were like.  (Like we did on how they handled Kaley's broken leg)

Kaley was absent during two episodes during season 5 because of her broken leg and her absence, as Penny , was never explained to general audience

When Mayim had the car accident,at the begining of season 6, her right hand was hidden for several episodes.(She stopped playing the harp)

Maybe is both cases, general audience didn´notice it, but I think in Maternal episode, Amy´s absence probably will be noticed (not in the cold scene. of course,  but yes during the boys, Penny and the mothers meeting in 4A)

An inmense group of viewers don´t know about Mayim's personal crisis and  they may feel like "something is missing here"

Exactly. My aunt is a casual viewer and. knowing that I read spoilers and follow the casts' real lives, was asking me what's going on. She didn't have a clue. If we're flummoxed about the cause of the break, imagine what a shock it's going to be to the spoiler free/ casual viewer. Cow help Chuck and Bill come Thursday night and Comic-Con. Here be pitchforks. Edited by gohawks12

I think Amy has always been a little torn about Sheldon, at least since they became bf/gf. Most of the time she gets and appreciates his quirks and his uniqueness, but there are times when she does want that "normal boyfriend", and I don't think there's anything wrong with that, as long as she isn't trying to force Sheldon to be other than he is.

I think that when she's really paying attention to who he is, she finds herself being surprised at his own brand of thoughtfulness. I'm not saying that Sheldon gets to do whatever he wants, but that his first thought is never going to be conventional, or if he knows he's expected to do the conventional thing, he looks for some way out of it.

There may be nothing wrong with a mushroom log and Amy might have appreciated it more on any other day, but there's that part of her that wants more traditional things and traditional gestures, especially on a day like Valentines Day. She wants her boyfriend to give her flowers once in a while, but he rejects such a convention for her. For Amy he wants to go for something more worthy of her than a bunch of severed plant genitals.

But he also knows how to please his mother. Maybe when he and Amy have been together for 30-something years, he'll know that she would prefer flowers once in a while. :p

I hope there isn't backlash against Amy when the episode airs. If we're feeling like her behavior is out of left field and OOC, how will the casual viewer see it? There are already so many people out there who think that Amy is sex-crazed and pushy, and as much as I hate to say it, the finale may reinforce this. As others have said, the writers aren't as concerned about the characterization/development of Amy as they are about how she moves Sheldon's story forward.

May be now, Sheldon realizes that giving some flowers :give_rose: to her girl fríend (and future wife in his mind)) is what "social conventions dictates" :icon_idea:

Plse, remember last season finale! Sheldon´s last words to Amy! ?

This season finale she says that she loves him, that she needs a space to think  (because of Mars, mushrooms for her, yellow roses for his mother, Flash in the middle of a hot make-out? WHO KNOWS?). She is almost crying :girlhide:

Last season he left her in an angry way , without saying good bye, slamming her door!

But... he returned to her :maninlove: , said ILY to her and gave her hot kisses :firstmove: (and a mushroom log for VD!!!)

and now, we know he has an engagment ring for her, and she doesn´t know he has it!!!!!

Oh! Season 9 will be amazing for our SHAMY!!  :cheese:=@

I hope so too, Retroluv, because Mayim deserves some peace, to grieve for her father. It may take some episodes until we get her back completely. In the meantime I would like to see how Sheldon plans to get her back. He could experiment on something, like flowers which gloom in the dark (do you remember the glooming fish, this was awesome), or a truth serum, so he finds out, what´s going on in Amy´s mind, which she can´t tell him or a love potion or whatever. Any other ideas? Or he could work on his dark materia research. I really would like to see him having success on this field or on his String Theory.

I hope people don't treat Amy unfairly either. If she feels she needs to take time to self reflect, I think she should. Yes, Sheldon will be left confused and hurt, but Amy is hurting too. I do think that when all is said and done Shamy will be even better for this experience.

Please, dear Shamies, I beg you: Don´t mix Amy´s feelings with Mayim´s feelings!

Mayim Bialik is a wonderful and brilliant actress and she has played the make-out-kiss scene and the Maternal scene just 10 days after her beloved dad´s death, and she did it beautifully, according with the ladies attending the taping. She is an excellent professional and I´m quite sure she will play Amy as Amy must be played in the next episodes. Our SHAMY will be great!

I'm excited for next season to start already, hope they follow through with Amy and Mary meeting again

me too!! i mean the fact that they mentioned the mary/amy dynamic is something their keen on exploring says to me that it definitely will happen. Usually if they're asked something they don't intend on writing, they'll say stuff like "perhaps" or "that might be interesting". I'm sure we can definitely hold tight and look forward to that storyline unfolding :)

I just watched Maternal Combustion again. Has anyone else noticed how touchy-feely Sheldon has become? He nudged Leonard twice, readily shook Bev's hand, flung his arm across Bev's lap toward Leonard, and accepted his mothers pat on his knee.

He nudged Amy in the Fort.

He seems so extremely happy, and it is more than just the award. Amy is slowly causing him to come out of his shell. It makes his willing paricipation in the upcoming make out scene so much more real. He is almost ready.

It is really heartbreaking indeed. I mean, she is in love for the first time with her first boyfriend and of course she wants to spend every single minute with him, cuddling, kissing and to get as intimate as possible with him.

She wants to experience this kind of corporal amalgation with her partner. So I think you are right, that when she offered a sleepover, she was expecting some kind of intimacy, but then nothing more happened, so she was kind of dissapointed, because deep insight of her she was hoping for more. So it´s logical, that the more time they spent together, the more she WANTS him and she is starting to realize that it is becoming harder to restrain those feelings. So when they were making out and he started to talk about the Flash, she was disappointed again. She might have thought something like: "Hey, doesn´t he want me as much as I do? I thought this moment was as important for him as for me!" So, you are right she is re-evaluating their relationship. But I´m sure they can solve their problem, but they really have to talk about their feelings.

Me too, I cannot wait for this. I also hope some more of Amy's family and mother can show up. I just want Shamy interacting with their families. Its something thats long overdue.

I know people love the special guests like Bob, Will etc. but to me I somewhat get annoyed by this, when I feel that showing family members and interactions are more important to me as a viewer than just a big name guest star thats interests the boys. Would be nice to see one of the girls at least fangirling over someone they admire or like for a change. lol

Congrats!

I believe Molaro said in an interview (can't remember which one, though) that nothing happened in the fort. And that's fine with me, because if they're rounding bases, it should not be entirely off-screen!
