[Spoilers]Leonard And Penny Season 8 Thread

Recommended Posts

Yes clearly Raj didn't intend to upstage Leonard and Penny's big day. And clearly I don't think it would of mattered if they switched up the moments, for the sake of comedy, or being sweet it really woulden't of made a difference. I am really looking at the writers, they could of played it out a lot better. I don't really agree that Penny waited too long to announce the engagement, or even propose. Considering their relationship has always been a work in progress, as has Penny's life haha. I mean look at her pregnancy tests, and the way she impulsively moved to LA to become an actress. Clearly Penny does not plan things haha, so everything has just happened organically and naturally. I don't think they should of got engaged in S6 or any earlier. Like I said they were always a work in progress, hot blonde next door and Socially Awkward Geek was never going to be smooth sailing. I think the balance in the relationship has always been Leonard all in since Middle Earth, and Penny catching up. If she was not ready in S3, she was sort of in S6. But it was the S6 finalie where she fully committed. The engagement was always going to have a feeling of anti-climax. It always felt more inevitable then a conclusion to a great series of stories. Regardless if it was intentional or not, preparing the viewers by watching Leonard and Penny get more intimate over the past three seasons, seeing Penny's insecurities, then the big engagement. Then to continue to see the running gag of the series exploited in the final for some set up joke, or throw away line regardless if it was from Bernadette's vantage point or anyone else's. It's like when Howard or Bernadette got engaged, and Sheldon walks In "I held Amy's hand!" Yes! This even bigger news, push Howard and Bernadette to the side haha. Maybe it's just my expectations were a bit too high, watching the first two seasons of the series, or I even expected a milestone and a big moment to be delt with sensitivity but this had Lorre written all over it. I am fine with setting up jokes for a laugh seeing it is a comedy, but from my perspective it was just uneccessarry. I do hope S8 begins with some form of engagement party, I just hope the writers focus on the right balance.

You make some good & don't agree points, love to debate with you more. but my bed is calling, so next time.

Yep the thing with Raj's sexual romp, totally unnecessary on the scene.  For once, Lenny deserved much more respect from the gang when they announced they became engaged.  I do too hope S8 begins with some sort of engagement party for Lenny.  When did Leonard get the ring? that thing looked like it was forged in another planet, shiny and huge.  Klingon present.  I  hope the guys speak Klingon at Lenny's wedding, some sort of nerd homage to Leonard by the guys.

I do think something has to be done in season 8 to acknowledge what a big deal Penny's saying yes to Leonard is and them being engaged. At a minimum a party and I would like the girls to talk so Penny can admit to them he has been the one for a while. I would also like to see dominate and confident Penny back when she gets her career success, in the form of being now possessive of Leonard. I am hoping Leonard has a lot to do with Penny's confidence in taking and succeeding in her new job. It would be cute to see them in the morning, on her first day, Leonard making her a lunch bag, handing it to her, their kiss and then him telling her to 'go get them'.

Penny did propose to Leonard, was quite serious about it, and stressed that she had been considering it for some time. She may have been waiting for a check from "Serial Apeist 2" to buy a ring, or some other token, but she did ask, and argued with Leonard quite vehemently about it. She was not distracted, so it didn't just slip out. Leonard didn't just jump at it either. They actually had a mature, serious discussion about the concept of them getting married, and the context of Penny asking. Basically they both looked at each other and asked if they were really sure, and it was clearly something they were both committed to doing. I loved the way they handle the proposal.

Where I think the writers screwed up, upon reflection, isn't the way the group blew off the announcement over Raj getting laid, it was the reason Bernadette mentioned. To the group, Leonard and Penny were functionally married. In fact, I seem to remember that there was a comment to that effect earlier in the season. The group revolves around Penny and Leonard as the surrogate parents now. The idea of them actually getting engaged and married is emotionally just details to the group. I'm sure it was just an easy joke to the writers, but if Bernie has said something to the effect that in the group's mind they were already married, then passing over the fully expected engagement and eventual marriage as old news makes sense. Regardless of the exact scene, it seems to me that the group regards them as already fully committed to a permanent relationship. In Howard and Bernie's case, it wasn't clear that Bernie was going to accept Howard's proposal. In fact, the group was under the impression that Bernie was going to break up with Howard. Penny hasn't looked seriously at a guy since her first date with Leonard.

During Raj's murder mystery during Mommy observation Stuart made a comment about Lenny being the most solid couple which the others tried to refute. Raj's original scenario was them parting their separate ways in the future over their careers. (irony?)

The thing with Lenny arguments is that they will say things they don't mean, to get the upper-hand in the argument, like the musician friend in season 3 and that non-date in season 5, but they will also sometimes admit what they really feel, at least Penny will. What has been nice in season 6, and more so in season 7, is that Penny has been not been putting up her shields with Leonard hardly anymore. Her telling him the feelings she has about her life and going to him when she had her car problem says more about where she sees them then the actual proposal. Raj's statement was a throw away to create an argument and an introduction to Stuarts statement, which then made them look at each other and realize how true his words were, they were made for each other and you saw that neither of them denied it, they were both sort of speechless for a moment after that.

It does get a little depressing her constant not getting a break, so her having some success that makes her bouncing around happy would be a nice change. I had a thought, when I heard about her new job, that she could work it for a while then maybe towards the end, she seems to be working a lot of overtime, worrying Leonard she is seeing someone, until he finds out she has been sneaking in auditions and gets a job in a sitcom.

I agree that Penny could not catch a break, but I wonder if they were closing out issues the old Penny had and we have the new improved Penny. New hair, full commitment to Leonard, and possible new job on the horizon (Its not acting but we need to see where this going) I remember the first time Sheldon ran away, Penny told Leonard to go help Sheldon, this time it was let him go and they went off hand in hand.

As far as living arrangements Lenny will be together no matter where they choose to sleep.

After watching the final I have to agree the group see's Lenny as the surrogate couple of the group. Apart from the scene being poorly choregraphed. We have seen since Season 5 to be honest, Lenny become functional as a married couple, they are the groups constant. It is true to Penny has not looked seriously at another guy ever since dating Leonard, he ruined her for other guys haha. So I can understand the throw away line, to emphasize on the joke Raj doesn't get laid often, and the one of the long running gags Penny and Leonard do it all the time. But it also implied they were not taking their engagement seriously all those times, but recently Penny and Leonard, had a serious discussion regarding marrage and the engagement, and being ready. Opposed to other comedies who have this elaborate engagement scene, but you don't actually see the couple discuss how serious marrage is. Penny also said she has thought about it and did actually argue with Leonard over it, I mean in Proton she was actually quite upset that Leonard did not give her an answer, before Leonard was like Sweety I love you but I won't marry you, and Penny was like Thank You haha. So I just think it was a matter of not that they propose all the time, but emotionally to the group they were effectively married, so it was inevitable. I just think the way they still diminished and devalued it, could of been played out a bit better. I mean Sheldon hugging Raj too? Sheldon? That was OCC if anything. I also didn't think their was anything to Penny ignoring Amy, first off their friends didn't seem that enthused about their engagement, so they were having a dinner just the two of them, Amy was getting annoying haha so fair enough Penny told her to get lost in a loving way, I don't blame her. I also don't see a problem with the train station scene, thought it was the scene of the year, Johnny was excellent as was Kaley, Penny was almost the voice of reason. Amy was their in the end anyway. Anyway S8 I hope begins with some form of engagement party for L/P, I think the writers well bring Sheldon back early to delay any real change, it could be held on top of the roof, or maybe the cheesecake factory, doesent Bernadettte still work their?

Really having Leonard and Penny engaged is great for the show, because the three leads are funny together and now with Leonard and Penny engaged she is going to be around Leonard all the time so the three of them will be together a lot and it will be natural. I can even see Lenny teaming up against Shelly more which will probably give us some good Lenny vs Shamy fun.

One scene uncommented upon was when Leonard fixed dinner for Penny and they started discussing dates. Amy shows up hunting for Sheldon, and tries to crash their alone time together. Leonard practically hit her in the head with hints, and Penny finally just said "get out". I loved it. I think that is going to be a recurring theme, as each member of the group is going to have to be reminded that it is Leonard and Penny, not Leonard and Penny and whoever is feeling needy. This is really the root of Sheldon's issue. He is NOT part of Lenny, and he simply cannot understand it. I just recently rewatched the last two episodes of season 7, and found Sheldon quite unsympathetic as a character. The combination of unfounded intellectual arrogance and profound childishness is just not tolerable. Unless one accepts that he is mentally challenged, he is an ass. He will soon be a guest in Lenny's home, wherever that may be, not the lord and master of the place he grudgingly allows Leonard to rent a room. His offer of a modified roommate agreement was clearly going to have Penny stay LESS time than she clearly already was. For all of Sheldon's "brilliance" he should have understood that Penny was going to be around MORE, not less. The scene with Amy points out that Sheldon is not the only one that craves Lenny's company for their warmth and stability.

I like Lenny being a little more selfish to the others, for themselves, as long as the writers don't go too far, because Penny and Leonard are still the leaders of the girls and guys respectively, the Alphas of those groups, so their friends need them still. I do want them around each other more and I want Penny to be more defensive of Leonard from now on, no more 'he really tries' jokes that are really insulting. Also Lenny being more involved with each other can only be good for Shamy because if Sheldon can't get Lenny to take care if him, Sheldon has to depend more on Amy.

You have seen more and more of that since Season 6. Not only for Lenny but the other couples. The dynamics changing, more one on one dinners then group dinner hang outs. It is just a sign of the show and the characters slowly maturing. As the characters have made different life choices, it has not only affected their self-actualization but also the structures and confinements of where they choose to eat. They no longer have the Cheesecake Factory, well they do but Penny does not work their anymore, does that mean they cannot eat their anymore? Anyway. But specifically Lenny what I saw this season, was them being selfish in a way putting their relationship first. No more the lines from Penny "Oh he tries" or having Sheldon playing hypotenuse. They are a team, that is why I really loved how it was highlighted in the finalie, with Lenny dinner telling Amy to catch a hint lol, it showed them unified, it just felt so natural and organic like they were one. Far cry from the Penny who freaked out because Leonard told her he loves her, she is arguably the most evolved character in the series with Howard. I also felt she was the voice of reason in the end, partic with the train scene, which is a far cry from the perky, naïve girl from Season One. But I agree I still want Lenny involved with the group, clearly when they move it well most likely be into 4B. Problem with Shamy is I don't think Sheldon has even considered he can rely on Amy, he depends on Lenny too much, might see that change in S8. I still want a Lenny v Shamy V Howardette V Raj? haha Paintball comp, they are getting older but they are not 90 lol live it up!

I agree Penny is the one who changed the most in the show.  Leonard has sort of grown up from the immature nerd he was, he has more confidence, is not as nerdy, understands girls better and has a more mature outlook.  Penny besides growing up, has had to change her whole concept on what a good man is and learn that the best things in life sometimes come in small packages.

Definitely, Lenny are center of TBBT universe, the couples orbit them.  With less Leonard around, Sheldon will gravitate towards Amy,  thus helping her.  I think Emily will be good fit wit the girls too, I can see Penny, the queen bee, welcoming her.

I agree, the gang orbiting Lenny with less Lenny to fall back on.  I think is time for Raj finds a girl, unless he is the ugly duckling scenario which would be sad and cruel by the writers to do to Raj.  Did not meant to dip into Raj's discussion.

I would like to see Emily at a couple girls nights to see how she interacts with Penny. Penny is the queen bee so I wonder if they would clash.

I was thinking about Leonard moving into Penny's apartment and that might be not good for Lenny because the small apartment is not going to let them really have everyone over, therefore limiting their interaction with the rest of the gang. The best thing for them is to probably live between the two apartments.

I am really wondering if Penny's hair is going to be short? I wonder if this is going to be another of those smart decisions she talked about last season when she told Leonard she wanted to be engaged. Will it be used as a lead in for her looking for a new job, which leads to the sales job?

Yeah when it comes to the living arrangements, some how I don't see Lenny in 4B. I mean they are entering the next phase of their relationship. You saw even in S6 Lenny had a dinner party, which really showed how evolved their relationship is. They are going to become more domestic, Penny the domestic goodness, and Leonard her lapboy haha. You get my meaning though, they well have other couples over, Penny's Friends she may make from her new job. Amy and Bernadettte well come over, maybe Lenny and Howardette well have a double date, possibly Shamy depending on where they are at who knows lol. So somehow I don't think 4B well be big enough, I heard a rumbling though Penny's apartment may be turned into an office to accommodate her new job, so I can see them living in 4A more, so Penny moves in with Leonard and Sheldon. Obviousley Sheldon playing hypnotenuse between Lenny again is stale to some, but it makes the most logical sense. Clearly from a production value stand point, they probably can't bring in another apartment unit, so Lenny in 4A and Penny's apartment as an office for her career change makes the most sense.

Yeah, I'm thinking Penny is going to spend a lot of time in 4a, because her there puts the top three together a lot, if Lenny went to 4b it would separate the top three, so I think the writers won't move Leonard in with Penny.

Now that I think about though, with Sheldon gone, they probably have been living in 4A since he left. They wouldn't need 4B for the first episode.

That's my thoughts on 4b not being set up

It is nice that Lenny gets to spend the summer in 4A without Sheldon. Shame we as audiences wouldn't see those sweet moments off camera, I would love episode 1 to show them just messing about & having fun. That be off the hook...

Yeah be cool if S8 began with a montage of Leonard and Penny spending the summer in 4a with no interruptions and distractions. I liked the scene at the end of the finalie of S7, when Penny and Leonard in less then no words, told Amy to take a hike haha. It showed them unified, like too see more of that. But S8 premiere well clearly be focused on Sheldon, Sheldon In jail sounds like well be the opener to S8.
