S8 Discussion Thread

Ok, my take on the TR. Like I have said a lot on the lenny thread, S8 is all about Shamy progress and Sheldon & Penny and it's going to continue that way till end of the season with little bits of lenny here & there and maybe a big Lenny plot for the last two episodes. I like this episode, looking forward to the airing and I laughed out loud reading the TR, really funny like when Leonard got excited about telling penny about his day and the jokes about the coffee table in both apartments lol. I like how Sheldon for once acknowledges Leonard's work & the joke about the jerk off. Penny & Bernie watching embarrassing footage of themselves sounds like a laugh. But I can't help but think this is a Shamy, Sheldon and Amy episode in disguise. It started with Leonard paper which got hijacked by Sheldon and became the plot and Amy fanfic also became a plot & both carried on till the end. And the tag scene which could have been a special bed scene for Lenny had them reading a fanfic about Shamy what is it with the writers inserting in the little Lenny's we are getting this season. Don't get me wrong, not complaining, about the lack of alone time for Lenny, because I am used to it now and can't see any changes soon, like I said It going to be a funny episode & can't wait to watch it, just don't agree with the posters who think it a shelnard and the girls episode. JMO.

Ok, WTH!! I thought the next taping is Feb. 3. If they had a table read today, then there's a taping next week (Jan. 27). TENSOR!! What's going on??

I'm working on it, but I don't always have an answer, like at this point. ☺

See I have no access to taping sked, only broadcasting information so this is news to me.....something is up.  Maybe this is their way to try and shuffle the original schedule to make room for the 1 less episode they missed in August....Or something else..

Something is up but at this point, who knows. If they are taping 1/27, then it would make sense to canx 2/3 as they usually only work 3 weeks in a row....

That reminds me of one thing that made me roll my eyes a little about the episode. I know that the show doesn't particularly concern itself with how things actually work in academia (the whole tenure thing, Sheldon being a 'Junior Professor', Amy's 'Did I mention I am also a quantum physicist today?' thing last week), and this is another issue. It wasn't clear to me whether Sheldon and Leonard were actually publishing, or posting a mimeo on their web pages (hopefully the latter), but if you were really excited about a research breakthrough, I don't know that you would treat it as you would treat a blog-post or an op-ed. You'd have a semi-polished draft as a working paper, present it at least at a few seminars (including one at Cambridge, where Hawking would be invited to attend) and then submit it to a journal. Maybe it's different in the natural sciences?

I know, I know, I know, this episode's theme was 'Oh, internet. What a funny bunny you are', and you couldn't have the 'internet troll' reveal without anonymous commenting, and all this pedantry is most unattractive anyway.

Ah well.

The guys are always talking about publishing their papers on the university server. I assumed this was something fairly commonplace since it comes up all the time. Another blog simply found it and summarized it, and people were commenting on that. They published the paper where they always do, whatever the official term for that is.

Ah well.

Being it's Physics, they probably posted the paper on ArXiv.  Almost all papers are posted there before and while they are going through peer review.  The version in Arxiv is usually much more than a polished working paper, in fact it is can be the version that is sent for peer review.  If posted on Arxiv anyone (even a somewhat self taught person who has a interest in physics like me.) would be able to read it.  They could then blog it themselves or put it up on the university website(where it would get comments) and it would be referenced and linked by science bloggers and science news writers(where, again, there would be comments).
