I don't mind cliffhangers.  To me they're simply the staple of TV these days.  The X-Files used them ALL the time.

But you know that the lead actor is coming back, like Sheldon running off on a train or Mulder being apparently killed in a box car in the desert.  They're going to be back next season so it's just waiting for the resolution of the story--like getting to the end of a novel and waiting for the next volume to be released.

It's the anticipation and people wondering how it's going to play out that's part of the fun.  Yes, it's a ratings ploy--it's ALL a ratings ploy.  Story lines, guest stars, promos that might make an episode seem more dramatic than it really is, etc..

Just like in a good novel, you end the chapter with something compelling.

With TV, part of you wants to know what's going to happen with the characters and part of you knows that logistically things have to be a certain way--actors will return, the producers in the case of TBBT want to keep that 4A apartment as a centerpiece for the gang, and so forth.

There's no real angst involved.  Just the pleasure of anticipation and speculation.

Yup! I hung out on the FidoNet TREK echo (the equivalent of a forum for those unfamiliar with FidoNet) for years. Fun times; lots of good people there (and one particularly obnoxious participant by the name of James Dixon, who was universally reviled and shunned by everyone).

Most of my time was spend on FidoNet  Physics and Astronomy forums.   I moderated Astronomy for over a year, but then lost all the local BBS, so I resigned.

I must watch ALPHAS, to see how that went. And STARGATE UNIVERSE again. Lol and hehe :) Still, I agree, given that a cliffhanger on TBBT isn't at all risky now. We know they will resume, barring misfortune. And TPTB want the buzz, because they are not just in this for the love. So I can't blame them for inflicting the emotional suffering on the deeply engaged.

I don't think they can top ROOMMATE for shock value (and I'd like to have that discussion) but the whole season helped set that one thing up. Amy pulling the plug now does seem random, given her history of tolerance. But she has a point. There are some times when you expect the multi-tasking to stop and for your partner to focus. Maybe the timing is "convenient", but I've been waiting since 2013 for her to stop running after him and for him to run after her. This isn't avant-garde story telling. It's a boy-girl tale, with quirks, serial monogamy and a white/cream dress and picket fence at the finish line. Nothing too complex in the long run. So it should fit the template, which includes cliffhangers.

My wish is that they leap back into the timeline instantly, on their return. That way we miss nothing. It's a headache for hair continuity, however.

Well it can't be worse than the transition Friends made from season 6-7.  The S6 finale-S7 premiere transition is a mere 5 minutes.  But Chandler looked like he dropped 20 lbs. AND had his hair cut between then.

A topic detour, but in case you were wondering, Raj's drone cost at least $1400. Am sitting here putting together my shopping list for BJs and clipping coupons and they have it advertised. No wonder his dad was pissed.

Helicopters for everyone!

I still want to know if those scenes were pre-taped or how they did them.  Did they have the little things whirring and then they just pulled it around with fishing line or something?

So has anyone brought up the fact that during Howard's attempt to fix the helicopter, Sheldon didn't make fun of him once, even though he had so many ample opportunities to do so. Growth?

Possibly. Sheldon has not really ragged on Howard much, if at all, since their little bonding trip to Houston last season.

So as this is the spoiler thread, I'm assuming everyone knows how the whole season will finish. So overall, how do you think this season ranks compared to others? What about how things have changed; do you think there will be a big shift in season 9 for the whole show's tone?

a man in his thirties should already have this "growth".

You could apply that to any other character, on the show: Howard and Lenny regarding their mommy issues, Raj and his immaturity regarding relationship, Penny's commitment issues, Bernadette's short temper, selfishness, Amy's blutness, etc. Edited by Mislav

I think lenny will move in together and maybe get married, shamy will resolve any issues they have quite early on I hope

I give this season 9/10, lots of good things have happened and I've enjoyed it thoroughly

but no one was discussing that.

Ok, I've hid quite a few posts.  This thread allows discussion of anything to do with season 8.   If you feel a post is not in the correct thread or breaks one of the rules, report it.  And a hint, prefacing a comment by including "with all due respect", means it's more than likely an attack on another poster.

Well, with all due respect... ;)

I think Sheldon has to be "slightly" (lol) beaten into the right shape to make him a widely acceptable candidate for marriage. This season has been about that. So he has stopped picking on Howard gratuitously, and the reasoning for his adoption of that former attitude was retconned back into the show. It did make sense before that he was just contemptuous of lesser minds. Now it's Howard's fault for being mean. He has been assiduously mending fences with Penny, to the point where some of the audience got confused about the nature of the relationship and others got frustrated with the detour. So now he has moved closer to being a more "normal" sort of guy, to make the much hoped for grand finale more plausible to the mass audience. I understand the story and commercial reasons, but it has been at the expense of some of the unique aspects of the character. Some miss that uniqueness. And that's go to be fairly recognised. They did have something extraordinary and they have painted over the bits that were extreme and unacceptable. The final version of Sheldon will be interesting to compare to the Luminous Fish guy, 10 years on.

But, all done through the the transformative power of love... so who can argue with that. /s

Posters have a right to bash whoever they want. If I see something that is wrong I don't care if it Sheldon, Leonard, Penny, Amy or the rest I will bash.

And some may disagree with the reasons/comments that are presented by the bashers. That people are allowed to express their opinion and discuss about the matter using their point of view also.

Exactly. Who can argue with that? He could stay an abrasive bachelor or he can get the sharp edges worn off.

He can either start to care or not. Take an interest or be disinterested.

You are both right. One can complain, and another can disagree. What isn't going to happen anymore, is the complaining about how the other person posts. More posts have been hiden, and with this, after yesterday, next time warnings.

There's the rub. The sharp bits were interesting. Now we have forts. Birds got to fly .... and pendulums got to swing, but forts? *sigh*

That was my reaction when I read the taping report. Somehow when I watched the episode I let myself be transported to BBT land.

Luminous fish also required suspension of disbelief. Let the tent be a metaphor.
