Super excited, managed to snag 3 tickets (standby, but I wasn't even expecting that!) for the 3/24 taping. Planning a week long trip to LA around it, but I'm so concerned we won't get in. We're planning on getting there super early. Any idea on the best time? I've heard people saying 10:00 or later, but I'm concerned, with the popularity of the show, that'll be too late and the line will be enormous.

We were of the same mind at the taping we attended in November.  It was our first time attending and my wife and I did not want to take a chance of not getting in (holding two standby tickets), coming from Spokane, WA.  I convinced my wife we needed to be there by 0700, and yes we were the first in line.  0800 three folks showed up, by eleven I think there were 15 or so in line.  The line continued to build and I think at the time they led us into the parking garage (after the Ellen Show audience was moved out and into her studio), there were 41 in line.  As it turned out there were not a lot of VIP's so all of the standby's were let in.  MichyGeary, the author of this thread, is really the expert on this topic and has provided great info on attending, just read back in the previous pages.

Since I now have a guaranteed ticket for 3/24, I'm contemplating some activity on Tuesday morning--maybe the WB tour, I can afford it, or maybe even just driving out to the beach, since I haven't been there since the 70s.  Maybe just poke my toe in the ocean, if I can...

 

I'm going to have to do some serious research, I guess.  I was debating whether or not to rent a car, but it kind of depended on the ticket.  If I'd gotten a standby, I probably wouldn't have bothered because I would have spent Tuesday morning lining up early.

But now I have some leeway, so...what to do, what to do...?

Since I now have a guaranteed ticket for 3/24, I'm contemplating some activity on Tuesday morning--maybe the WB tour, I can afford it, or maybe even just driving out to the beach, since I haven't been there since the 70s.  Maybe just poke my toe in the ocean, if I can...

 

I'm going to have to do some serious research, I guess.  I was debating whether or not to rent a car, but it kind of depended on the ticket.  If I'd gotten a standby, I probably wouldn't have bothered because I would have spent Tuesday morning lining up early.

But now I have some leeway, so...what to do, what to do...?

I know I'm going for the full week, so I can stand in line all day, but the next day my friends and I are planning on seeing some of the less… I don't know, cliche? sights? The murder museum for one, seeing as we're all a little crazy, and one of the Universal tours, or just City Walk, to save money. I have a whole list of things that I've got ideas for doing,  if you need ideas, I can give you the list.

I know Jim is supposed to get his Star in the Walk of Fame this spring, so if it happens in March before the 25th, I'll definitely go looking for it!  Otherwise, I'm not sure what I want to prioritize.

You have a pretty good chance if you show up before 11am. Obviously the earlier you are, the better your chances, so it's up to you how early you want to get there, but it's not necessary to get there at the crack of dawn in order to get in. I tend to show up between 10-11am with a standby and that works out very well. But I also live here and if I don't get in, it's not a big deal, so it's really your call about how long you want to be in the line. You can always bring a book and order some take-out food!

I think a tour is probably your best bet since you'll be right down the street from the line. I wouldn't recommend trying to get in a beach visit before the show since you'll have to battle the traffic coming from that far out, and I wouldn't want you to miss the show. Warner Brothers and/or a visit to City Walk would be manageable since they're so near to Gate 3. The Walk of Fame is pretty close too if you're driving, as long as you allow plenty of time for our crazy traffic.

I THINK (and I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think…) It's not until later this year, after the show wraps taping… But I need to do more research on that, maybe someone will know more than I do on that? I know Kaley's is there, I'm definitely visiting that and taking some pics. I'll have my dog with me most of the time, so much of what I'm doing needs to be in public, dog friendly areas (can't leave home for a week without my silly mutt!) 

 

Anyway, some of the things I found that I wanted to look at (no idea if you'll find them interesting, I'm just kind of weird)… 

There's a cool comic book store I want to try and find, called Secret Headquarters Comics, address listed as 3817 W Sunset Blvd, LA.

 

There's of course the Walk of Fame, and Rodeo Drive, the obvious tourist stops. 

 

I plan on trying to make a trip to the Santa Monica Pier, I've heard it's always gorgeous and bustling with activity, I just need to get a muzzle for my dog, he's a pittie cross and they have muzzle laws in Santa Monica.  

 

There's the Travel Town Museum, which has tons of trains (I'll have my son with me and he's a fan of anything with wheels), plus it's a cool museum, that's in Griffith Park…

 

And the La Brea Tar Pits. That costs money, but I've heard it's a really interesting experience.

 

And of course the Museum of Death, that's on 6031 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood, CA… 

 

The Science Museum in LA, it's free, unless you want to go to the IMAX, that costs some.. 

 

There's an abandoned Griffith Park Zoo structure open to the public, I love old stuff like that, so…

 

And there's the Evergreen Cemetery, I figured it might be fun to go look at some celebrities grass, see a bit of history.

There's walking trails up to the Hollywood sign that I'm planning on taking the day after the show, scenery is gorgeous, I've heard. The trails start behind the Griffith Observatory.

 

And of course there's pretty much the whole Los Feliz area of LA, lots of big name celebs live there (Including Jim!) so I'll probably take a walk through that area of town, see the gorgeous houses, maybe play ISpy with a few celebs.

 

I'll be in the LA area from the 22nd until the 26th (finalized hotel reservations today YAY), so I've given myself a little time to play around with things to visit.

That's the website for it. There is a cost of admission, but I'm a weirdo and find that sort of stuff fascinating, so it's well worth the price in my opinion, I was considering some of the bus tours, but they're way expensive, and I can just walk around and find most of the houses they talk about on my own if I want to go that route.

So what are some good places to eat that would be a treat for visiting LA?  I'm thinking I might do something like a nice restaurant on Monday night, since I leave LR around 5pm and arrive in LA around 8pm, without having eaten dinner (peanuts on the plane don't count...)

 

I'm still debating about renting a car--I would like the freedom, but not the gas $$ or the possibility of getting lost in LA.  And I'm still debating about the hotel.  I was thinking of the Tangerine, but it's a little spendy.  If I decide to do the VIP WB tour, it might be nice to balance out that money with a cheaper hotel, but then again, that means I've got to either rent a car or spend money to get around.

I'm also having trouble grasping how far apart things are.  I've been to LA, but not in more than 30 years, and not when I was in control of where to go and what to do.

 

If I rent a car, I'll have to drive from LAX to the Tangerine, but I can walk from the Tangerine to WB's Gate 3, can't I?  I know it's a few blocks, but it's essentially just down the street, right?  Or would it be better to drive, even that short distance?

 

I guess I won't get to look at the ocean, but will I be able to see it from the airplane?  I would at least like to do that.  I haven't been near any ocean since 1993 or so.

 

How far/complicated is it to the Walk of Fame?  I imagine trying to park in that area could also be a hassle.

My favorite places to eat:  Flore Vegan Cuisine in Silver Lake and Doomies Home Cookin in Hollywood.  It's not too far from WB Studios, and it's really close to the Hollywood sign.  Doomies is right by the Walk of Fame.  I think it's only a few blocks away

 

Both Best Western and Tangerine are walking distance to Warner Brothers, but if you'd have to leave all of your electronics in the room if you plan on going straight to the taping from there.   You could always use Uber if you didn't want a rental... but you'll definitely want a car to get around.    LAX isn't close to WB at all.

Phanta, yes you can walk to the studio from the Tangerine.  Its very close.

 

And there are some good eats right near the hotel.  There is a pretty ok Mexican place right next door. 

 

My first trip out I didn't see the ocean, didn't really have the time.  The 2nd trip we went to Santa Monica and it was beautiful.  I am spoiled in that I live on the East Coast and I'm about 10 minutes to the ocean, but I will admit the beach at Santa Monica was so clean and beautiful compared to my LI beaches.

You should definitely walk from the hotel because sometimes they have you valet your car on the roof and it can be a hassle

I was thinking about something like that, doing kind of an entire TBBT sightseeing day, going to see places they've mentioned in the show. I'd like a peek at the actual CalTech campus in Pasadena, but I don't know if the school will be on Spring Break at that time, I know my University is.

You can walk there from the Tangerine but I'm not sure, with bad knees, if that's the best idea. I know that when Rick was in town, he stayed at the Best Inn Hollywood and took the bus (it goes directly between the hotel and Gate 3) which is only $1.75 each way. That can be a good option that doesn't involve gas money or getting lost and is affordable. The Best Inn is also cheaper. The only downside is when you get out of the taping, it only runs about once an hour, so you have to hope you didn't just miss it. But then again, you can always take an Uber or Lyft home. Cheaper than a taxi and you won't have to wait around.

 

You can park at many lots in Hollywood that are $7-10, or there is the parking structure at Hollywood and Highland, which can get expensive depending on how long you're there and whether or not you validate. I tend to park my car at Universal / Studio City Station (free) and take the Metro Red line one or two stops to Hollywood/Highland or Hollywood/Vine ($1.75 per ride). It's a good option if you're looking for a cheaper way to do things. I got around the city for two years on just the public transit. It isn't the best in the world, but it's manageable, especially with the locations you're visiting.

Question for you guys who have been to tapings before. I am a smoker, and while I know once IN the studio I won't be able to smoke, is it permitted outside while we're waiting in line? If I step a bit away from the groups of people, or are there designated areas that I'll have to walk to to have a cigarette? Just wondering so I can plan to bring or not bring my smokes with me.
