8.05 The Focus Attenuation had a 4.6(4.4 least week)with 15.63 million(15.54)and the repeat at 8:30 The Proton Transmogrification had a 2.9 (2.9). with 11.87 million (same as last week) The repeat at at 8:30 was again ranked third for the night, behind TBBT and The Voice. A full report along with comparisons to other shows will be put up later this afternoon, when all the adjustments have been made. Traditionally, TBBT gets adjusted up by a tenth or two and about a 200-300k viewers in the finals.

ETA, there is a possibility that TBBT could drop a bit. Monday Night Football, was on CBS in San Francisco, and pre-empted TBBT. We'll see in finals.

Final Ratigns For Monday, October 13, 2014 broadcasts

TBBT's Season (8.05, The Focus Attenuation), brought in a 4.5 , with 15.32 million people. At 8:30 a repeat of (7.23, The Proton Transmogrification) garnered a 2.8 demo and 11.38 Million . This is even for both the original and the repeat, viewers were down about a half a million.

Even down, TBBT was first for the night with that 4.5 demo. In second was The Voice at 4.0 and third was a tie between the 8:30 repeat and The Blacklist, both with a 2.8 For viewers, the new TBBT was number one with 15.32 million viewers. The Voice was second with 13.28 million and Dancing with the Starswas third at 12.74 million viewers.

My usual source for the half hour splits was not available today, as the they were having trouble with their site this morning. So no splits today, sorry

Scorpion slid to a 2.4 demo this week, still good enough for fifth for the night. It was not able to grow out of the TBBT repeat this week. It was four tenths below in demo, but virtually the same in total viewers. Next week starts the test for Scopion, as it doesn't have a direct TBBT lead in (repeat those it is). The week after, we'll see how it goes without any TBBT on Monday.

do you think big bang ratings will go up when it returns to Thursday nights

It's going to be interesting. Thursday is a much weaker night as far as competition, so their ratings should go up. However, Thursday night is one of the lower viewed nights of the week, so that could ding it. However, I think the weaker competition will boost it's ratings far more than the fewer viewers drag it down. IMHO, it should go up a few tenths and about a million viewers. Say a 4.7 demo with 17 million viewers. It will be interesting to see what happens.

This week TBBT ran  8.04 The Hook-up Reverberation.  At 8:30, a repeat of 7.16

The Table Polarization ran
The top ten in demo follows. (Repeats are designated by a R, Specials or Special Times are designated by a S, P indicates series Premiere )

Show                                                18-49 demo              18-49 viewers

Sunday Night Football                             6.6
TBBT                                                       4.6

Football Night In America                        4.0

Thursday Night Football                           3.8*

The Voice (Mon)                                       3.8

Modern Family                                         3.5

Simpsons                                                 3.3
How to get Away with Murder                   3.1

Scandal                                                    3.0

TBBT    (8:30)                             R            2.9

*Thursday Night Football's final numbers include both the broadcast and the cable ratings.  Since I am only considering broadcast, I will not include the cable portion of the ratings.

Show                                                      Total viewers

Sunday Night Football                               18,088,000
NCIS                                                           17,301,000

TBBT                                                          15,938,000

NCIS:NO                                                     15,414,000

The Voice (Mon)                                          12,582,000

Dancing with the Stars                               12,317,000

Scorpion                                                     12,054,000

Thursday Night Football                             11,910,000

TBBT (8:30)                              R                 11,835,000

Madam Secretary                                        11,446,000

Just a reminder that Thursday Night Football ratings are only for broadcast portion of the ratings.

Two things of note.  TBBT repeat was a top ten show in both demo and viewers.   The other thing  shows the power of the Sunday football overruns.  Last week, CBS had the late game and 60 minutes had the fifth most viewers, with 14 million, this week, it's not even on the list.   FOX had the late game this week and note that The Simpsons, who didn't even make the demo list last week, is seventh with a 3.3.

Wheel of Fortune                                6.8                             Jeopardy                                            9,662,000

Family Feud                                        5.8                             Family Feud                                        7,261,000

Law and Order: CI     (Sunday)           4.7                             TBBT (Weekend)                                 6,760,000

TBBT (Weekend)                                 4.3                             Law and Order: CI                              6,574,000

Law and Order:SVU     (Sunday)         3.6                             Law and Order:SVU (Sunday)            4,937,000

Entertainment Tonight                         3.4                             Entertainment Tonight                        4,870,000

A couple of notes.   During the fall, Monday Night Football ratings are collected and listed under syndication, although it's not considered a syndicated program.  This program is pulled out of the syndicated ratings.  There is also a program called "Weekend Adventure".    This is a collection of nature programs, broadcast on ABC during the day on weekends.  I've pulled it out, as it's not late afternoon/evening syndicated programing.

Nielsen issued revised ratings for Monday's finals, Both of TBBT went up in both demo and viewers.  Some other shows dropped.   I'll add the changes in red below:

TBBT]'s Season (8.05, The Focus Attenuation), brought in a 4.5 (4.6) , with 15.32 (15.94) million people. At 8:30 a repeat of (7.23, The Proton Transmogrification) garnered a 2.8 (2.9) demo and 11.38 (11.84) Million . This is even for both the original and the repeat, viewers were down about a half a million.  The demo is now up a tenth from last week and viewers up about 200,000

TBBTwas first for the night with that 4.5 (4.6) demo. In second was The Voice at 4.0 (3.8 ) and third was a tie between the 8:30 repeat at 2.8 (2.9) and The Blacklist, both with a 2.8 The Blacklist dropped to a 2.6. For viewers, the new TBBT was number one with 15.32 15.94 million viewers. The Voice was second with 13.28 12.58 million and Dancing with the Starswas third at 12.74  12.32 million viewers.

My usual source for the half hour splits was not available today, as the they were having trouble with their site this morning. So no splits today, sorry

Scorpion slid to a 2.4(2.6) demo this week, still good enough for fifth to tie for four for the night. It was not able to grow out of the TBBT repeat this week. It was four three tenths below in demo, but virtually the same up, by 200,000 in total viewers. Next week starts the test for Scopion, as it doesn't have a direct TBBT lead in (repeat those it is). The week after, we'll see how it goes without any TBBT on Monday.

20 October, 2014; Live +7 for Week 5

Based on week two numbers.

As with syndication, I'm going to be doing the Live + 7 a bit differently this year. I'll be given the top 10 in Lift and Total for both Demo and Total Viewers.  Lift is the amount of increase from Live + SD and the Live + 7.   Sunday Night Football lift for both demo and viewers isn't always available, as the average of both is around 1%.  As I can't always get the numbers, I will be estimating the totals this year.   As these are estimates, I won't include them in the list, but with the 1% lift, Sunday Night Football would have about a 7.5 demo and about 19,580,000 viewers.    TBBT ran 8.03 The First Pitch Inconsistency.

                                                                                                           DEMO

Show                                              Live + 7 Lift                                                              Show                                            Live + 7 Total

How To Get Away with Murder              2.3                                                                    TBBT (8:30)                                          7.0

Criminal Minds                                       1.8                                                                    Scorpion                                               4.6

Scandal                                                  1.5                                                                    Criminal Minds                                      4.5

Scorpion                                                1.5                                                                    Once Upon A Time                                4.4

Greys Anatomy                                      1.4                                                                    *The Voice (Mon)                                    4.0

*The Voice did not have a large enough lift to make the top 25, hence, I do not have a lift number for it.  I suspect, based on previous lift percentages, that it would have increased, but Once Upon A Time still would have been higher.

Final Ratigns For Monday, October 20, 2014 broadcasts

TBBT's Season (8.06, The Expedition Approximation), brought in a 4.6 , with 16.02 million people.    It was up two tenths in demo and 350,000 from the overnights. This week, the show was even in demo and up by 700,000 viewers from last week.

TBBT was first for the night with that 4.6 demo. In second was The Voice at 3.4 (down six tenths from last week)  and third was a tie between Scorpion and The Blacklist, both with a 2.4 For viewers, the new TBBT was number one with 16.02 million viewers.  Dancing with the Stars was second with 12.58 million and The Voice was third at 11.90 million viewers.

My usual source for the half hour splits was again not available today. So no splits today, sorry

Scorpion held to a 2.4 demo this week, good enough for a tie for third for the night. It picked up three tenths out of The Millers. So it held up well with a much lower lead-in.

Last night, the premiere of The Miller's scored a 2.1 demo, with 8.93 Million viewers.  Last week, a TBBT repeat of (7.23, The Proton Transmogrification) garnered a 2.8 demo and 11.38 Million .   Generally, networks like when a show, with a huge lead in, keeps 60-70% of it's demo and viewers.  The Millers only kept 45% of the demo of TBBT and 55% of the viewers.  It will be really interesting to see how The Millers and Scorpion do next week, with Two Broke Girls taking TBBT's place.

Ten this maybe obivious to some. But is it just me but the ratings are noticeably lower then last season. Not much but still a drop. Is this because of the change to Mondays? And could the ratings lift when BBT is moved to Thursdays?

Ratings overall (not just TBBT) are already down 11% from last year.   This is just a general impression, but it appears that those  5.4 and 5.5 for the first two are going to be the high for the year.  Of course, nothing else (except two episodes of The Voice and the crossover Family Guy) have hit 4.0.   TBBT is at a 4.97 average for the season.  Nothing else is above 4.

Part of the drop is it being on Monday.   On NBC, The Voice skews young, which takes some of the younger demo off.  On ABC, Dancing With the Stars skews older, which is the normal viewers for CBS.  On top o that, you have football on Monday and there is also Gotham, which started out pretty good, but has taken some hits the last few weeks.

Once it gets back to Thursdays, the overall weaker competition should help.  Of course, Thursday is one of the lower viewed nights, but the weaker competition should offset that.

I was thinking the fact that a Sitcom in 2014 can still pull in 20 Million viewers (which up to 2013 were numbers not seen of a Sitcom since Raymond)  let alone over 10 Million Viewers with all the Technology we have is a great achievement and amazing. It a show Peoples want to watch the night it airs not DVR it, Record it and watch it alter or wait and watch it online which I am sure many do those things to but still.

From 23 October, 2014; Syndication for Week 5.

Based on Week Three ratings

I'm going to do the syndication ratings a bit different this year. I'm going to list the the Top Ten in Household Rating and number of viewers for  syndication.

SWEEPS

There was a question in the Shamy thread about Sweeps.   Nielsen normally uses it's regular set box, which only monitors which channel is being watched, along with the boxes that are referred to as people meters.  These are slightly interactive boxes that track the age and sex of the person watching.  I said slightly interactive, as each person enters their age and sex, and when they watch they select the "button" to which their age and sex is attached.  These are able to handle more than one viewer, and even guests that are watching at that particular home.   Both boxes are able to track DVR usage as well.   The numbers you see, here in the ratings thread, are based on the set box and the people meter.

Remember, the ratings are based on a statistical sampling, so each home represents a certain number of homes.  Here's a simple example (and not accurate, it's just to give you an idea), if the Nielsen company monitors 100 homes,  they make those 100 homes equal to 10,000 homes.  If say, 20 out of that 100 are watching a certain program, then the company extrapolates that to 2000 homes.  Now, these types of extrapolations are subject to error, so the more data you collect, the errors are reduced.   While these are able to provide sex and age data, there isn't a further breakdown.

During the months of November, February, May, and July (this isn't a well known one), Nielsen sends out paper diaries.  This requires the users to write down what they are watching, at what time, if they are watching a DVR, etc.  It is not automatic.  However, while those diaries give information on age and sex, they also give information about marital status, income, ethnicity, education, etc.   This does two things.  One, it provides a more in-depth picture of who is watching what.    This is valuable to the advertisers, as they can see specific groups that are watching the programs.  It's a silly example, but you want to tailor your ad to older, more affluent males, if you are advertising during the broadcast of a golf tournament.  You don't want to advertise the next concert of the newest boy band during that time.  The other thing it does, is to provide Nielsen with the data to tune their extrapolation calculations and to break down their people and set meters into various groups found from the paper diaries.

The diaries are sent out to the various households for a two week period of the sweeps, and then the households are changed for the second two week period (remember the thing about more data reducing errors.  The term sweeps comes from the earlier period when Nielsen would start collecting the diaries in the East of the US, and then "sweep" across the country, picking up all the other diaries.

The Most ever watch American Sitcom Episode was M*A*S*H. The series Finale got around 106 Million Viewers i believe. The Most seasonally was probably I Love Lucy.

Well, if you're talking about Entertainment programs, then yes it was the MASH finale.  That 106 Million is the average number of viewers.  125 million people watched some part of it, which represented 77% of the people watching television, and was more than half the US population at the time.   (TBBT last episode had 16 million, with 15% of the people watching TV).  The problem is that most of the superbowls get more than 140 million watching at some point, while the highest average for a Super Bowl was 112 million.  In terms of series, I Love Lucy during the 1952-53 season averaged 67% of the viewers FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON.

For the world, the most watched single program was the 2006 Wold Cup Final with 260-322 million viewers and 668 million watching some part of it.  In 1969, 530 million people watch the first human walk on the moon.  This, even though it was 2-3 AM in most of Europe, and it was not broadcast in the communist block countries.  For multi-day broadcast, it is estimated that 4.7 billion people watched some part of the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Well like Ten said you have to consider the time periord. Mash had 77% of broadcast watching. And 15% with Big Bang. So its hard to compare eras from different tv shows, depending on the times. Friends averaged 23.61 for Ten seasons. Friends I could be wrong averaged around 20-50% of people watching TV. Mash actually averaged per season 22.4 million. So while if it we are basing it on episodes, it was definately the most watched sitcom ever. Based on Average per season Friends was actually watched more. But like said different shares of the tv audience in different times. Big Bang averaged 19.7 wasen't it last season, #1 show last year. But again different viewers share. Last season it was the first non special episode since Everybody Loves Raymond to pass 20 million, so that is pretty unprecedented in this day in age of streaming e.t.c.

Not really. No TV sitcom since Lucy has gotten over 40-50+ Million Viewers for a Single Season. It still holds record for most watch single season of a sitcom. It like saying you can't compare to day Boston red soxs team to The New York Yankees of the 1950s.

Actually you can compare, but you have to do some research and some calculations. One of the trickier parts is when the ratings switched from household share to total viewers to demo as the measure. If you do the calculations, since 2000, the highest rated season, for a scripted series, was the 2003-2004 season of Friends, with a relative number of 300. The second highest was the 2013-2014 season of TBBT with 269 (an interesting sidenote, if you take out the huge finale of Friends, that 2003-04 season comes in at 261, eight less than TBBT season last year). Both these seasons are the highest scripted series since 2000, including dramas. the 2012-13 TBBT season came in at 249,higher than all rest of the comedies and in the top ten season, if you include dramas. While TBBT ratings are down this year, they are down less than overall TV viewing, and so far this year, TBBT has a relative number of 251. Higher than any comedy since 2000, except for TBBT and Friends last season. Credit for the relative numbers goes to the website Spotted Ratings.

Big Bang averaged 19.7 wasen't it last season, #1 show last year.

Again, it's going to depend on what you mean by average and #1. For Broadcast TV, It averaged just under 18 million for Same Day viewing and it was #3 in that (NCIS and Sunday Night Football). For the "Official" numbers, it had 19.96 and came in second to Sunday Night Football. For live + 7, it averaged 23 million and was #1. It was second in demo to Sunday night football in Same Day, official and Live + 7, although The Walking Dead, a cable show, beat it in demo to finish second.

But again different viewers share. Last season it was the first non special episode since Everybody Loves Raymond to pass 20 million, so that is pretty unprecedented in this day in age of streaming e.t.c.

Actually, it was "The Bakersfield Expedition in Season 6 that first hit 20 million. Two shows, in season six, hit 20 million. The Occupation Recalibration hit 20.35 million and is the highest number of viewers for the regular timeslot. The Deception Verification, the second broadcast of the season 7 premiere night had the highest number of viewers for the show, 20.44 million.

You basically illustrated my point. You can't compare, I mean by how Broadcast viewrship has declined over the years. In the 50's TV was the only form of entertainment. These days with Streaming e.t.c. Theirs just more avenues.

Cheers Ten my knowledge is not so expansive when it comes to Ratings and Viewership.
