Not a biggie but still not my favorite Sheldon moment

But that was it

I was watching this episode again with a friend who remarked "Why is it so important for Sheldon to prove Leonard's experiment redudant to Penny, the girlfriend?" One would think that as a friend, Sheldon would just explain the experiment the best way he could, and the comedy could have fallen on his over-explanation or Penny's shortfalling in comprehension, rather than the obvious mean tone it took. So I chose to answer that remark with "Duh, he's jealous and thus is deliberatly misinterpreting her request"

Hey, not my fault the writers led me there!

LOL that is funny.

I just think sometimes they take Sheldon's need to be superior a bit too far but hey he is the funny, quirky character I guess they need to go there with him

Sure they bring it a little bit far, but that's his character! If he were to actually be nice about Leonard's experiments and/or Penny's incapacity to understand it, that wouldn't be really Sheldon-like! :p

That's just his nature! He's been like that since forever! :p Don't change our Sheldon, right? :p

I think I get what you mean... Sheldon likes people around because through them he can reflect on his own genius! Brilliant! I hadn't thought of it like that. And through the constant interactions that happens, a good percentage of them Sheldon is NOT good at, like for example driving, Mandarin and putting on an item of clothes on another person! Although Sheldon is never humble, it's those things that make the show so funny.

I just thought that the whole teaching Penny physics thing could have been funnier if he didn't go back to Ancient Greece all the time. Because I am still not sure what the heck they wanted to say with that...that Sheldon has a quaint side that enables him to be nostalgic over History?

:icon_lol:

Even though I know he wasn't really jelous, it was fun to entertain the notion for awhile :p

I am starting to get a little offended by Sheldon's constant belittling not only of Leonard's intelligence but of his work. Sheldon really has no room to talk because its not like he's making any major contributions to his field either. Ironically out of all the characters Howard is actually the most successfull in his career. Leonard, Sheldon, and Raj are all in "research hell".

Sheldon's method of teaching Penny pretty much how to insult her BF's work only serves to make me unsympathetic towards him whenever he suffer's humiliation. He pretty much earns it. I can't get behind the whole "Sheldon is just being Sheldon". To me that simply serves to excuse and not hold him accountable for any dickish behavior he displays. I really want to see Sheldon get put in his place career wise.

I agree, Sheldon IS a little lazy, and is not the pinnacle of genius, not really. He understands theory and all that existential science stuff, but at the same time he really lacks a lot of discipline and some basic physics. Don't you guys remember when he tried to "help" his other friends, and in particular Leonard who told him Shedon's imput would just blow his entire experiment, so could he just Go away please?

Sheldon sees the forest, but not the individual trees. And I believe that stems from his refusal to collaborate with people, to open himself up and to really knuckle down. He's dysfunctional, hence why he is funny as hell.

YES episode 10, he was a total dick, I've seen the episode a few times showing it to friends, and they all don't understand why it's so important for Sheldon to put Leonard down through Penny. Most people have a certain dynamic for friendship, they know how they would treat their friends, and Sheldon is not following that code. Why? Because Sheldon wants Penny! (kidding, he doesn't know what he wants) ... Because Sheldon is SHELDON! He's NUTS! :p

Yeah, he didn't listen to his own mother about this! And remember how he acted after that? ''I called you an idiot and was wrong... to point it out!'' :p

Here's the thing: Sure in normal life, we'd get annoyed by how condescending he can be. But being a sitcom, we just laught at that, because it's done in a funny way!

Sure, ''Sheldon being Sheldon'' is not an excuse, but ''Sheldon being Sheldon in a sitcom'' is! Let's just enjoy him making fun of everyone else's intelligence! :p

Ironically out of all the characters Howard is actually the most successfull in his career. Leonard, Sheldon, and Raj are all in "research hell".

You're right, making spatial toilets and shelfs are very successfull accomplishment! LOL Just kidding, I have respect to the four guys' careers, personnally! It's true Howard might seem to make the most contribution, but it's just because there is not much actual implication of Raj discovering a new planetary object or Sheldon's development in string theory. Yet, to quote Nowitzki, Sheldon's discoveries would ''change the way we see the entire universe'' :p

Actually I don't have any problem about Sheldon being Sheldon , I think Sheldon that way is best that Sheldon trying to be cute or empatic in the sitcom context.

My problem is when people judge Leonard so hardly, I mean if Leonard makes something some people judge him as he was a real person taking him from the sit com and putting in real world, I always read that people ask too much to Leonard but Sheldon these same people forgive him anything ...that is not fair , I mean if we going to Judge Leonard in real world context so Sheldon must be judge in the same way, and we can see that Sheldon is not as good as the people look him, actually is not the kind of guy you want to have as friend.

Again this is not againstSheldon is just that I don't think that he must be idealized as everything he does is perfect.

Agree with rockon45 it makes you wonder if that's all to their relationship, what was the speech penny gave at the end and what did it mean

Nightengaleo,

how did Sheldon teach penny to insult leonard's work is that was what the speech she said?

i just noticed this whilst watching the reruns.

When sheldon is teaching penny physics.

he gives the force of gravity as 9.8 m/s

this is incorrect.

gravity is actually, 9.89m/s

so if sheldon is rounding to 1 decimal place & not 2, then he should be stating the force of gravity as 9.9m/s.

#justsayin

have a good day.

Love the show btw.

Saw the rerun of this episode today.

I don't generally like to pick favorites but this one is up there. Penny giving the explanation to Bernadette of why Sheldon picked his spot was priceless. Same goes for her recitation about Leonard's work. Since she is an actress that knows how to memorize lines this was perfectly believable. The bemusement on the faces of the others was hilarious.

Sheldon's attempt to teach some physics to Penny (because Bernadette was able to talk physics with Leonard) reminded me of an attempt I made a long time ago to help a friend study for an introduction to computers exam. She had thought the course was going to be an introduction to some computer applications when what she got was an introduction to computer science.  The different number systems (binary, hexadecimal....) had her completely confused as did the Boolean logic questions. She should have asked for help closer to the beginning of the course.  That was about 1987 and home computers were not common yet. Anyway it was a year or two later that we started dating and we have been married 23.5 years now (four kids 15 to 22).

Watched this last night. It's funny how episodes you might of thought were bad. Years later hold up really well. Now you've got something to compare it too. Hilarious still. Loved the Howard and Leonard stuff. Still not sure about Sheldon manipulating Penny to inadvertently belittle Leonard's work. Was Penny ever aware she was doing that? Doesent sound like it. I remember hearing the whole week Jim and Johnny were giving her crap for having to learn all this science dialogue haha.

I have come to appreciate Gorilla Experiment much more years later,  now that I graduated high school and college.  Understanding some concepts in CS, physics, math and chemistry from teaching assistants or seeking help of close friends can be frustrating ! I had a similar experience in an "Introduction to  computer architecture " class.  Although Sheldon was teaching very basic stuff . ma=mg , and a=g . And acceleration due to gravity is constant . Jim was very funny in this.

Kaley effortlessly recited the reasoning for Sheldon's spot.

Penny- newton was a really smart cookie

Penny- "oh balls!"

Sheldon:  "I’m sorry. ( Sheldon smiling) Have you suffered a recent blow to the head?" -  :shy:

And I love how Sheldon kept going back to ..."It's a warm summer evening in Ancient Greece.."

Penny : there is going to be a test ?......Sheldon: testSSSS .

"One cries because one is sad. For example, I cry because others are stupid, and it makes me sad."

"Howard, your shoes are delightful, where'd you get them ? "

Its a bit silly but the comic timing in this episode was nice and many dialogues that are still remembered today .
