My sleep apnea was/is so severe that the neighbours complained about the snoring (my wife was going stir crazy). All it takes is a cpap machine and the snoring stops. Well as long as the machine is used every night.

Amen. In fact, I've been using one for so long now that I literally *can't* sleep without it, I'm so used to it.

What is amazing about the episode is not that Sheldon said in the past that Leonard does not snore but Penny does (3.14) but that he actually put up with this for 6 years without comment. The Sheldon we saw in the flashback (3.22) was going to deny Leonard the apartment if he did not know the sixth noble gas or not giving 12 hours notice before having sex. He would have had a conniption if he had to endure loud snoring noises for one night, let alone nearly every night for 6 years before he got use to it. And as Leonard noted before, Sheldon does not suffer in silence. :icon_wink:

Sheldon and Leonard's back story was modified slightly for the purpose of a very, very funny episode. Fair exchange.

This storyline's inconsistency drove me a little nuts, but not for the "does Leonard snore or not?" reason. Amy comments that she's heard Sheldon complain about Leonard's snoring, and Sheldon says something about "yes, it bugged me for the first 5 or 6 years, but now he's like a white noise machine and it helps me sleep". But by the time Sheldon met Amy, he and Leonard had been roommates for 7 years (Staircase Implementaion)--by which point Sheldon had stopped complaining about his snoring. So Amy should have never heard him complain at all.

Yeah, nitpicky I know. Still bugged me nonetheless.

And that's just it, I don't think it was modified, as Sheldon has mentioned Leonard's Sleep Apnea, which I would take as a comment on his snoring, YMMV.

Actually, he said this about Penny in 1.02 "The Big Brand Hypothesis":

Penny: In my apartment, while I was sleeping.

Sheldon: And snoring. And that’s probably just a sinus infection, but it could be sleep apnoea, you might want to see an otolaryngologist. It’s a throat doctor.

So his only comments in the past on the subject are, Penny snores and Leonard doesn't.

Maybe he got over it.  The "bears are terrifying" line was from Season 2.  The bear he bought for Mr. D'Onofrio was in the latter half of S5 and this one is S8.

Sheldon got over it? What has Sheldon ever gotten over? I admitted it's a picky point with me, and I've never minced words on my feelings on Sheldon 2.0 (or whatever version they're on now). When it comes to this character the show has been amazingly inconsistent with his quirks, obsessions and idiosyncrasies. They could do better. Original Sheldon was what hooked me on TBBT from episode one. Sheldon is still my favorite character and one of the major reasons I'm still watching 7.5 seasons later.

If you have been watching for all those seasons, you should be able to answer it yourself.

Just look at his attitude regarding romantic relationships and everything involved, and how he thinks about all those things now.

I do remember Leonard saying once that he has sleep apnoea in 2x04: "The Griffin Equivalency":

"With any luck tonight will be the night my sleep apnoea kills me."

But I've always seen that as an example of the show straying for a single one-liner.

Well, if people can claim that Sheldon's mention of Penny snoring means that Leonard doesn't snore, then I think Leonard mentioning his sleep apnea can also be taken at face value to mean that he does indeed have sleep apnea.

Bottom line for me is that it doesn't distract from the story for me. Not the snoring, not the teddy bear. But YMMV

On Wikipedia is is sleep apnea is only listed as one possible symptom of a deviated septum. Other possible symptoms are nosebleeds and poor drainage of the sinuses. Leonard has had nosebleeds. Poor drainage of the sinuses could be possible.

I think there would been any negative reaction if they had said Leonard was having trouble with nosebleeds and poor drainage from his sinuses. My guess is that the jokes worked better talking about snoring. Of course back in the early seasons they did not anticipate this story in season 8 and I bet 98% of the audience don't remember that Sheldon had mentioned Penny snoring rather than Leonard in early seasons.

Just to clarify, Sheldon stated that Leonard does not snore and Penny does, in 3.14 "The Einstein Approximation". It was the second time he talked about Penny's snoring.

And I agree with your bottom line, I loved the dialog in this episode.

The Big Bang Theory Season 8 Episode 9- The Septum Deviation- Review

A fantastic episode which showcased the best this show has to offer- two clever plots with good jokes well worked together.

The Sheldon/Leonard/Penny/Amy stuff was very well written with many great lines; Sheldon showing just how deep his friendship with Leonard is was something which was important to show at this time, what with the living arrangements likely to change in the near future. It was nice to see that Sheldon still cares about Leonard and still definitely wants him as his roommate, something that will make Leonard moving out even more difficult. Sheldon's worrying did get a little bit repetitive towards the end of the arc, but the earthquake scene in the surgery was sublime and Sheldon running into the door was a LOL moment. One thing I did think though whilst watching the earthquake scene was how calm Penny was throughout. If her boyfriend was in surgery and there was an earthquake, even a minor one, shouldn't she be showing some signs of concern? Penny almost looked too calm, but I think that was down to poor acting on behalf of Kaley Cuoco, which I'm glad to say is an extremely rare occurrence. The glass door moment was one of the funniest so far this season and would definitely make it into a Season 8 highlights reel for me. Well done, TBBT!

The second arc, with Raj, Howard and Bernadette, was good too. I particularly liked Howard telling Raj about the Jedi class and Howard talking to Bernadette about couples therapy. I thought that the insults disguised as complements were amusing, but some of the jokes were not as funny as they could have been. Kunal Nayyer was on top form and played a distraught Raj very well, especially the moment when he burst into tears after repeatedly telling Howard that he was OK.

Overall, a very strong episode with a couple of great plots which I could only find minor faults with. As it is, this show is on it's way to one of it's best seasons, and, far from being out of ideas, is fresher and funnier than ever.

Best Line: Howard: 'Can you imagine being married to someone for 40 years?' Bernadette: 'Not anymore!'

Performance of the Week: A tough one between Kunal and Jim, but I think it's got to be the amazing Jim Parsons yet again. A great performance, particularly the car scenes with Amy, the earthquake scene and the urn scene at the very end. Top class.

Score: 9/10.

To be fair they were showing the contrast between Sheldon and Penny. And he was having surgery on his nose lol.

I understand that, but I still think if Penny really cared about Leonard she would be looking at least a little bit worried at the earthquake and a possible slip of the hand by the surgeon, regardless of on which body part the surgery was taking place.

You do make a good point however about showing the contrast between Sheldon and Penny. Both seemed out of character. Normally Penny is the caring one and Sheldon is the indifferent one who rarely expresses his emotions as openly as he did in this episode.

Sheldon is trying to talk Leonard out of having non-essential surgery, yet, in cruciferous vegetable, when Leonard asks Sheldon, if he's had his appendix out, Sheldon replies "I haven’t. I’ve been meaning to, but who has the time?".

Having your appendix removed, when you don't have appendicitis, is non-essential surgery.

Yes it is but if your having surgery for something and if they can get to your appendix easily, they will go ahead and remove it even if it's not necessary to do so. At least here in America they do.

Penny: Okay, the reason he deceived you is you were being a pain in the ass.

Sheldon: The reason I was being a pain in the B is because I was worried about him, and no one else was.

Penny: Really? You won’t even say A?

Sheldon: You bet your sweet B I won’t.

However, in The Luminous Fish Effect:-

Mrs Cooper: Because people don’t like it. Remember all the ass-kickings you got from the neighbour kids? Now let’s get cracking. Shower, shirt, shoes, and let’s shove off. (Exits)

Sheldon: Wouldn’t have been any ass-kickings if that stupid death ray had worked.

In 1x02  sheldon: gravity, you are a heartless bitch.

however,in 8x12 Sheldon: son of a bitcuit.(replace bitch with biscuit) which reminds me of the episode 6x07 where sheldon said "A-S-S".

I think it's inconsistence.  it's very common in the show.

In 1x01(not pilot),L said to S   "you are a semi pro"

while  in 4x24 Amy: I was proposing you massage your muscles with you own hands.     S:still sounds like a lot of unnecessary touching.

alright,at this moment, I have to admit masturbation involved necessary touching.

but,in 4x 15 Amy: Technically, Faisal is my fiance. imo this is a complete bullshit  just used to make laugh.

I Like you focus on the details, I appreciate that.   in some ways I love the small details which make shamy precious and unique.

I still shudder when I hear that line.

I think i might have to do something, fanfic wise, to address this, once and for all.

I was told that the line" Faisal is my fiance" is the writers' mistake and the writers hope we can forget that "fact" Amy had a fiance.  Is that true? when and where the writers say that?  maybe you know that. thank you .:shy:

Yes it's true.  It's one of their throw-away lines that they regret doing because it was meant to be a one off joke that didn't mean anything and yet fans keep harping on it and asking about it.

I like to think it was just a major misunderstanding on Amy's part very similar to when she thought Leonard fell in love with her when they went to that wedding together.  It's plausible because it was very much still dealing with Amy's immaturity and misunderstanding of how people think of her.

The Benefactor Factor - 4:15

The Pulled Groin - 5:3

There are always inconsistencies in writing (even the best planned out shows have them occasionally) but notice how a lot of these are coming from the days when the characters were still new. This happens a lot in many many shows that are made up on the go because the writers hadn't settled 100% for the characters yet.

For TBBT the biggest issue is S1 as the characters are all just pretty rough and they had to figure out a way to give especially the 4 nerds some more distinctive personalities. So as they started to refine them there will inevitably be changes in characterisations such as Sheldon stops swearing. Something similar happened when Bernadette and Amy came on the show with both characters only slowly growing into how we know them today.

speaking of Amy's character, I agree with @ camelliayao  "Her personality is whatever the plot requires it to be."http://forum.the-big-bang-theory.com/topic/6877-1012-the-holiday-summation-january-5/?do=findComment&comment=554153

in 6x07,for example, amy was impolite to Will at first, acting like a real "pain in the ass",But I never blame her.she is just a tool to help the storyline.

The wedding thing confused me too.Staying late in Leonerd's,until S came back, she asked leonerd to go to the wedding.Someone said it was Amy wanting to make sheldon jealous,er,which freaked me out .It sounds horrible so I choose not to believe it no matter how realistic it is.

But I still think Amy cared more about her and penny than her and sheldon in that period.
