Leonard And Penny: Season 8 So Far

Their seems to be a divide between fans of Leonard and Penny. On one hand you got the fans who think they are solid, no signs of breaking up, in a great place. Something you diddn't feel with them S3,S5,S6 e.t.c. On the other hand you got the people who don't like how their intimacy has been decreased, lack of real plots, lazy writing e.t.c. Just wondering for fans of the L/P dynamic, are you happy so far? 

 

ETA: It always spills on the L/P thread so thought it would be good to discuss the specifics so far.

Agreed as a fan of the ship since the pilot. What drew me into the show. They have never been stronger. I getting lack of intimacy. But they have had 7 seasons of that. I dont get it too. I have no issue. Being engaged off really early imo. Not much you could do storyline wise. Nothing tptb can do then just portray a happy engaged couple. Even if we dont see them actually kissing onscreen etc. You can only show so much 20 mins a week n

They seem to go the same way as they did with Howard & Bernadette when they were engaged.

 

And we haven't seen much intimacy in any of the couples this season, no kisses at all if I recall correctly for example.

 

They don't need A plots right now, they will get those when they start planning their wedding (and the wedding it self of course).

Listen mate. No one on the Lenny thread has ever said they want them broken up. also don't know where you ppls are getting this bs that lenny fans think they are not solid. They are 100% committed to each other. I do not have a problem with rhem being the background couples, what I have a problem is the lack intimacy kissing & all.

I was just agreeing with Rachel that they are solid, so not sure what people's speceifc complaints are. I mean talking about protest too much brutas. And you say MOST, are you speaking for yourself or a certain sub set of the Big Bang fanbase, just saying. The Lenny thread what has 10 people who post their on this site at most. This site is only a fraction of the Big Bang fan base.  You also keep saying act like an engaged couple. For me I am fan of the dynamic, but its not the whole show for me, and its not the main thing I focus on. When I tune in, I tune in for a laugh. They drew me to the show, but I am starting to appreciate the other characters too. Maybe that is why I am not so fussed about the lack of intimacy doesen't bother me. They have been kissing for 7 seasons. It's not like they are the only couple who have not been kissing, none of the couples have been.

I may not express this correctly, but 3ku11, when you say "on one hand" and then say "fans who think they are solid" that leads one to believe that you think that on the other hand there are fans who think they are not. I think that was part of Tonstar17's point.

There are times that you use comparative phrases like that and some posters mis-understand what you are trying to say. Sorry if I'm out of line. Just my two-cents worth....

And as of me writing this, I am one of the two ‘No’ votes. I truly believe that Lenny has been totally dismissed and minimized this season.

 

I feel like passing out magnifying glasses and starting a TBBT Scavenger Hunt called ‘Let’s Try and Find Lenny!’

 

For me, and I’m speaking only for myself as a die-hard Lenny, this season has been abysmal with a capital ‘abys’. Thirteen shows in the can and relying on two TR, the shows have been a depressive heartache. And it’s not that I want Lenny cast as the continual ‘A’ plot (as some people seem to suggest). I would love to see them represented. At all. They have minimal screen time and I feel as if I’ve seen more of Bernadette (given her face time in Locomotion, Junior Professor, Focus, Septum, Champagne, Clean Room) than I have of any Lenny. Presently, they are written (and acting) as the most unengaged couple in the history of the world. From experience and the engaged couples that I see they are together, hands on, talking excitedly about wedding plans and their future. What have we gotten so far? Nothing. Their physicality in the season has been negligible and the last wedding talk we had was from Leonard in the season seven finale. Jesus! Even Raj, from the last TR, with his mouth full of dog hair has had more physical off-screen intimacy with Cinnamon than the Lenny has had. 

 

So far we’ve had:

 

The Locomotion Interruption --- No Lenny.

The Junior Professor Solution --- No Lenny.

The First Pitch Insufficiency --- +Lenny.

Beautiful ‘Just makes me want to hold your hand and do it with you’ moment. Stellar!

The Hook-Up Reverberation --- No Lenny.

The Focus Attenuation --- No Lenny.

The Expedition Approximation --- +Lenny

(Personal Preference – the Lenny was undone (a bit) for me here when it the ‘fun sex on a pile of money’ had the kibosh put on it when Penny made the face that was clearly an admission that she had sex on a pile of money before. Like her marriage to Zack, Leonard comes in second again)

The Misinterpretaion Agitation --- +Lenny

The Prom Equivalency --- +Lenny

         Beautiful old school Lenny here but without a kiss.

The Septum Deviation --- +Lenny

(Personal Preference – the Lenny was undone by that stupid ending where Penny is taking photos of Leonard and Sheldon and laughing at them. For me, unfunny. Would have loved to see Penny actually taking care of Leonard rather than mocking him.

The Champagne Reflection --- No Lenny.

The Clean Room Infiltration --- No Lenny and this was a CHRISTMAS

         EPISODE!!

 

As for the two TR, as I know they play out differently when you see them so I want to reserve judgment. But just on first impressions? In The Space Probe Disintegration, it seems almost as they are writing Leonard with Stockholm Syndrome, he’s identifying and empathizing with his abuser of seven seasons (granted season eight Sheldon is softer). And in The Anxiety Optimization hate that Penny slighted Leonard with the beach/metal detector comment and then asked Bernadette if she wanted to go to Hawaii. OUCH! That is not how a loving, engaged couple act.

 

I long for a story like The Scavenger Vortex and that’s an episode I wouldn’t even consider a Lenny. But in it, Penny and Leonard are both laboring under misconceptions (one self-created and the other humiliating imposed) and they spend the rest of the show trying to prove their worth to the other. Adored that episode and would give anything to have a few like that.

 

Some folks maintain that ‘they are solid and in a good place’. To me, that is the equivalent of a dismissive shrug of a shoulder. The dynamic, vibrant Lenny that we know they can be, we haven’t seen this season.

 

For me, so far this season, the Lenny (or lack thereof) has been one disappointment after another as they have been minimized and this once vibrant, wonderful couple have been relegated to the back burner. Heartbreaking, very disappointing. This is definitely not what I signed up for. Truly hollow succor.

Sometimes it seems like one would have to read what he/she wrote five times, take hour to think about it and then press post to not being misunderstood or not to hurt anybody feelings unintentionally. 

But back to the topic. (I will risk it). I expressed my feelings yesterday in S8 thread, so I may be repeat myself a little,  but here's my opinion. I believe they are happy. They are in place, engaged people should be in my point of view - planning future, spending time together, and watch each others back, being best friends, understand each other, talking their problems out - not overlook them, take each other characteristics - good or bad and appreciate them, have their romantic time alone, as well as being there for world around them (work, friends etc..)...

I see it as season of growth, even for them. Maybe it can seem more underlining, but I think message we have to receive from writers is - they are ready for marriage, stable, all problems can be solved, they have no doubts if they want to be with each other anymore. That's what I really needed to saw, to believe this marriage can be "until death do us apart ." For lack of visible physical intimacy, I just don't see it as that big problem. They're holding hands, hugging, we just didn't see them kiss for a while, and as they're on for eight years, I think, it's not writers main focus right now, that's my explanation , but there can be of course another one. For their lack of A plots, I'm still stand by my opinion that it will come as real problems with wedding etc.. will be on the table. Now they're more in the background for other characters to develop, the way, they already did and it's in my opinion better way than make some plots up out of nowhere. That was my feeling of beginning of season 6 and  "boring kind of love," or their break up - I felt like it appeared out of nowhere, just because writers wanted to make tension and drama. Than this I'm more satisfied with them happy even if in the background. Drama and A plots will come with real life issues when the time would be appropriate. 

I may be happy, but that's just MY opinion It doesn't mean views of people who aren't are any less valid for me. Any of us have their own view of where should these characters go, and their preferences of how their engaged life should look like, and when it goes other way than we want, it can be really frustrating, as primary Shamy shipper I experienced it many many times... and from that I also know that, trying to convince someone about your opinion, can be kinda pointless and will not help that person at all.  So I will just wish all the best  to the less happy shippers in the future.

Valid points tallin, however, you label yourself a Shamy shipper. I understand that you commiserate with and understand the feelings of Lenny shippers, but the fact is your favorite couple (and Dr Cooper in particular) have held and enjoyed the spotlight together with amazing moments that have rapidly moved their relationship forward; something that is not true of the "other main couple".

There are potentials for lots of comedy at being engaged , i know they are solid because the writers want us to believe they are & I'll go with it, but there engagement feels forced, fake & false & I am beginning to notice it. What if instead of fun with flags with Amy, Sheldon repeatedly is at CalTech with Raj and Howard? What if when Sheldon was about to say "I love you too", Leonard shows up to tell Sheldon that he & Penny scored off the charts on a Cosmo relationship quiz? That is the season 8 world of Leonard & Penny!

You have to remember that there have been periods of time where there wasn't much Shamy either and Lenny were the focus. I belive this is the most attention paid to Shamy for an extended period of time and they have been together for over 4 years. Yes, we Shamys are happy right now, but we get it. Also, being a Shamy shipper helps appreciate the little things because that's all we're used to getting. Maybe because of that I have found all the subtle looks and touches with Lenny this season to be sweet.

Yes. You are happy right now. Deservedly so. But 11 episodes aired, 13 taped and the couple who have been a major focus from the beginning have for all intents and purposes have become background scenery....
