It's a hard thing to get past for sure.  You always want your writing to be perfect, but it never really is.  I ran into a whole bunch of issues when writing that I never thought of (Lol...novice writer troubles...):

 

1.  Getting Influenced by others - you think you know what you want to write, and then when you get reviews suggesting something happen a certain way, all of a sudden that thought starts germinating in your head, and you start questioning your own idea (or changing it).  Sometimes change is good, but sometimes it takes you away from where you wanted the story to go.

 

2.  Review Blues - You post a chapter you think is really good, and you worked hard on, and then hardly anyone reviews it.  It makes you think it sucked.  If you think if was great, that should be good enough right?....well..this one still gets to me.  I get still get the blues when I get low reviews.

 

3.  Rude Reviews - Boy did I get a lot of these!  Wow!  My very first review, was "Please do not write anything ever again."  I got a lot from Penny fans, upset with me that I painted her negatively.  They were not nice about it either.  Super rude language, rude comments.  I got used to it, but geez did it ever throw me for a loop in the beginning.

 

4.  Storyline Creep - This was entirely my fault.  I had a general idea of how I wanted the story to go (I wanted it to be a Shamy story, and how this fight came between them and slowly how they came back together).  Now I have no idea how my story became equal Penny/Leonard story, drugged addicted friends story that it became!  I seriously didn't plan that at all!  Lesson learned.  I'm going to outline my next story so I have a plan.  I was just literally writing each chapter as it came to me.  Unfortunately (or fortunately) my head goes weird places....

 

5.  Writer Envy - I'd write a chapter that I was happy with, and then I'd go read a really great authors story in between.  Like Chaos Cognizance, or one of Hazelra, mphs95, or April's stories.  Then I'd come back and re-read my story and go.....oh this is such crap!  It's no where near the level of their writing.  It's true, their writing is amazing.  But I just have to remember, that the more I write, the better it will get right?  Well I hope so!

 

All in all, it's been a fun experience.  I learned a lot in the process, and what was really great, is that I made some really nice friends on here (which I never expected).  So I encourage you to take a shot at it one day when you are ready.  You may find it a very interesting experience!

 

Have to respond since I was one of the trouble makers.

 

1.  I have to agree I think we influenced you.  But I can't say I'm sorry, because the more Lenny you wrote the more I enjoyed the story, "Needy Baby, Greedy Baby".

 

2. I thought all your chapers were good and I reviewed, so I was good about that.  I do agree with your statement, sometimes you really think you put out a great chapter then all your pride is crushed by bad or no reviews.

 

3.  I hope I wasn't rude, I know I was mad at your Penny character but I hope it didn't come across as rude to you.  Let me know if I did, biecause that is something I will need to watch.

 

4.  Story creep - I didn't know you didn't plan to go the way you did because the story flowed really well.  Penny seemed to get worse and worse and I really thought you planned it that way, so if it was a mistake, it wasn't really that bad a mistake.

 

5.  I know exactly what you mean, there are several writers that blow me away and some of them are even Shenny's (but their plots suck) and I get writer envy all the time.

 

I still can't believe "The Fight Aftermath" was your first fanfiction, if you keep writing like that you are going to be one of the writers I envy really soon.

I know I'll never get close to a great writer, as my vocabulary is too limited to write as I wish I could.

But at the same time I could never write BBT fanfiction in Portuguese, not only because it would limit too much the readers and also because I can't imagine the dialogues, how they would speak, because I just watch it in English as well...

Sometimes it really sucks to be so limited.

I try not to read other stories when I'm in the middle of writing, especially stories along the same lines, like when everyone was writing Sheldon-on-the-train stories.  There's bound to be some coincidental overlap if people are writing about the same subject, but reading other stories like that can make you feel like A) your story is crap, or B ) you're copying someone else's idea (or they're copying you), or whatever.

 

Like now, we're bound to get a ton of stories dealing with the break/not-a-break and how S&A solve their problem.  So, do you read the other stories for inspiration or do you avoid the other stories while you figure out what you want to write?

 

I also find it kind of distracting to read other stories when I should be writing my own.

What I find interesting is when I'm going back and rereading what I wrote, editing or figuring out what I'm going to do next, and I stumble across something really nice that I have no recollection of writing.

 

There are passages that I struggle over, trying to get the words just right, tweaking here and there until a sentence or paragraph feels perfect.  Those I remember because of the struggle.  But then there are those sentences or passages that must have simply spilled out because I don't remember struggling over them, or even writing them at all.  It's my voice, but it's unfamiliar, if you know what I mean.

It's strange but it's fun.

I think you hit the nail on the head with these

. #1 really hit home. I had an idea of what I wanted to do with one of my stories and then I got a review that criticized the way I wrote Sheldon which I thought was spot on. It got me thinking about it all weekend then I wrote a follow up chapter to correct him a bit then that person never reviewed my story again. The same person criticized my next one and I totally ignored them because they seemed to just be up for putting down my stories.

2. I hate when I think I've nailed a chapter and had so many reviews for one chapter and get hardly any reviews for the next one. It hurts.

3. I ignore bad reviews unless it is about my grammar or something glaringly obvious. You will never please everyone with your story.

I've had people hate the fact in one of my latest that has Sheldon with experience. I had him hook up with Leslie, not the greatest choice but I thought it could explain their hatred for each other. Boy did I get nailed by some people with that one.

4. Sometimes my story goes in an entirely different direction then I originally planned.

5. I can't compare my writing to others so I write what I want and know I will never compare to some of these other awesome writers.

1. I would also add an  influence  I was having. I was unable to read anything in the time I was writing, because I was constantly running either way  to the things I used and were used before which made me erase them, because I didn't want to repeat them, or I felt like "damn it, how come I didn't think of that." And I couldn't really enjoy fanfic just for it, while I was still thinking about it in connection to my own work.

2.I don't know...I was never really convinced reviews are reliable indicator to assess the quality of work. Like in real life what makes you comment on something more often? Something good, stable, or something controversial or negative. Often people feel more need to tell someone he suck, than to commend.  I have to admit I review more on chapters where something dramatic happens then those sweet ones but peaceful. As well I think it takes time for new author to get his own "crowd," and as people are having their favorite author they can feel closer to him and feel need to repay authors effort than If you read author you have no connection with. But still  this concept is baffling for me. There are stories I would expect to having more review, those I'm surprised they have that many. I actually see number of views as better pointer maybe. Sure people can just ran into it and get away but if the number is really high, it rather seems like they're rereading doesn't it?

3. Old good "this suck" reviews. I'm always saying don't  even give it second look if there's not because after that. If the reader wasn't kind enough to build constructive criticism, why you should  take it even seriously. But I know, easier to SAY I will not take it personal, than to NOT TAKE it personal.

4. I can see how sometimes it can happen, but I think it was for good in your case. I don't usually read Lenny so it's nice to have them there. 

5. See, Chaos is the one  I had to let go... I really loved it in the beginning but it just became too much, and as much as I didn't wanted to I stopped reading because the romance was too sweet and too overwhelming for me. But that was just problem of my preferences not a writer. Majority of people love it, and are justified to, it's really well written, but some don't. Just as same there are people who are praising your work, and  some who will not. I think it still depends on the fact if you are offering them what they're looking for, every author having it's own style readers are coming for. You are having style which is different,  but that doesn't make it any worse.  But of course trying to be better and better In your own style never can be a bad thing.

I would like to read some feedback,  only person I really showed my work was my boyfriend but he's still in love so I have to wait couple of years for honest opinion     But yes, someday I think I will, it's really a great place offering so much different perspectives it's too good to miss. Where to find a place with so much people from all around the world, giving you constructive criticism for free. Sure more than great opportunity for everyone trying their way in writing. And for a reader as well, great place to share your excitement and discuss.

Had to jump in here.  thanks for all the lovely things you guys say about my stories!! It really makes me smile and blush.

 

The most IC Sheldon I've read is Madamocho's stories.  Keeping him in character after the clothes come off it nearly impossible, but she does it so well you want to strangle the little SOB.  

 

I really think he will be a love sick idiot once he gets a taste of the Fowler love, but he wont stop being an Ass, its ingrained.  

 

I've been a terrible reader lately.  Just been writing and working, so I wish I had more information on the new stories.  But I cannot recommend more strongly Madamocho Or Belladuven.  Great IC Sheldon's.

I found your post today very interesting.  First, I always enjoyed your reviews, they were always very constructive and you were great for always reviewing.  You were definitely not one of the rude reviewers I was refering to.  They were mainly annonymous guest reviewers that left nasty messages.  Trolls I guess.  I deleted the nasty ones in the beginning, but as the story went on, I left some of them on there. 

 

It's true, I think some reviewers (yourself included) got me writing a little more Lenny.  I didn't think people would be as interested in that "storyline" but since I made Penny pretty horrible, I think people got invested in knowing about how it affected their relationship.  I also found it fun to write someone who was acting nasty.  I really enjoyed that!  At times it was funner to write a good fight scene than delve into a love scene.  In the end, I'm happy that I got to experience writing a variety of characters, I'll definitely feel more comfortable in the future writing them.

 

What I found interesting about you, was that you are a Penny Leonard fan.  So I thought you would be annoyed with how I portrayed Penny, and would be sympathetic towards her.  But you were always gunning for her to get the full wrath for her actions.   I found that really fascinating!  It was cool you could put your loyalties aside, for the sake of the story.  I wonder if I could do the same thing?

OMG!  I knew I forgot someone important.  Yes..so much yes.  Madamocho is awesome for IC Sheldon!  I loved Dr. Cooper and Mr. Hyde story of hers.  It's not very long, but it's a great story.  I think you'd like that one.  Very IC Sheldon, but also some steamy scenes.  I haven't read Bella Duveen yet, but will.  Also shout out to ShamyBabboos.  Her stories are very good also, if you haven't read them yet.  I really like her latest one The Relationship Proximity Manifestation

On one occasion, I wrote a whole chapter, then rewrote the whole thing, after my beta read it.

 

On reflection, and based on the comments of my Beta, heartbreaking as it was, I knew it was the right thing to do.

I thought about what you wrote here. But first: [email protected] bolded part. I'm with my husband for almost 15 years and I tell you, honesty can be overrated.  

 

Maybe this will encourage you to just go ahead with your story: When I decided to post my first I tried to prepare myself for the worst case that no one likes it and then I would have deleted it and well, I gave it a try and would have continued to write for my personal fun only As it was said before, a beta reader is really wonderful help. I feel much better since I have one (hello mphs95! ). Besides the fact that I need help with the language and the grammar, she also tells me when she thinks something is not working that way and she gives suggestions about adding this or that. It still is my story of course, but I think it really does improve it. Also when she likes what I wrote, it is a first sign that I'm still on track. I am still insecure about my writing and every time I post a new chapter I am nervous and I just hope for the best. I am beyond relieved when the first reviews get in. But on the other side, i think this prevents me from posting a chapter too soon and really try to be as good as I can be. So my point is, just brave up and give it a try. You have nothing much to lose but lots to gain.

You are two sweet QB! Always remember that I may have an idea or two but you are the genius who came up with the story...and what a story TP is!

Is there sticker with this line? Seems  like something very useful for everyday life    

I admire every beta reader, I remember when my friend tried to publish her  own book and the amount of money she was about to pay for proofreading was enormous. The fact that there is someone who does it for free, in his own time really speaks for itself.

Thank you all for your encouragement, it really makes me want to do it. I guess everyone after reading such a great stories reaches the point when you  want be a part of the madness.  I'm deeply in my exams right now, but after that,  I'll have just a job for a few months, so enough time to reread, try to be as satisfied with it as possible and not to  bury my head in the sand

It's really nice to have a community which can help each other. Publishing something first time is scary, but after reading your comment I guess everyone humble enough is feeling this way no matter how much positive feedback he/she received. Seems like people here are way more humble than is justified.

Can I be so nosy to ask if there will be next chapter soon? Not to push you, just that the last chapter ended the way it did and I'm waiting for another one like there is 25th December coming or something

I love your first person perspective, the idea of plot based on one night in the forest and the two different points of view. Really unique fanfic, thank you for such a great work !

Oh, that is seriously awesome! I have a couple of chapters before I'll get into needing to know what I'm talking about. Now knowing that I have an actual scientist reading my story, I can't just fake it till I make it on the facts... which is what I usually do when I don't have a clue what I'm talking about. yes, yes, yes, I want to see little Shamy too. That girl is just perfect and I would want to see even older kids as well. I had a dream few nights back about their child , but she was like teenage hottie. Poor Shelly was yelling at her suitors all Texas style, waving all over the damn place with a shotgun   I have a grandpa who was always saying he will one day chasing my suitors away with a shotgun from our doorstep, so seems like my  subconscious throw it in my Shamy obsession mix  Could be good inspiration for really, REALLY ridiculous one shot (pun intended)  I think

When quoting dialogue from a different TV show (in this case, Game of Thrones), is it necessary to put a spoiler alert, if it's just dialogue and I don't get into the context of the scene?

Secondly, Trekkies, what is the correct name of the hand signal? In my research, I've seen it referred to as Spock hand sign, Vulcan hand signal and live long and prosper hand signal.

I'm not sure there is a correct name for it.

 

I'd just describe it as:-

 

He raised his hand, fingers spread, and said "live long and prosper", to which Sarek/Surek/Savik (or other person of your choice) replied "peace and long life".
