Kathy2611 Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 (edited) Also from the looks of the inside of her car, it looks like she drives a legend sedan and those are usually automatic with the gear shift on the side of the steering wheel. I can't say for sure but from the looks of the inside I would say her car is a Buick or something similar and those are all "automatics." Stephen Hawking Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 From the outside, it looks like a Volvo, possibly an S60

Stephen Hawking Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 (edited) it is a Volvo. I thought it was. Is it an auto, or a stick? Not that it matters, because it's going to be a stick shift in my story. Stephen Hawking Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 Just had a close look at the DVD, and it's definitely a Volvo (you can see the badge on the grill), and almost certainly an S60. The headlamps, door handles, and the alloy wheels, all match.

Not that it matters, because it's going to be a stick shift in my story. automatic... very few people drive stick in the States. every scene we see her driving, her hands never leave the steering wheel. if it were stick, she'd have to change gears... , personally, i usually have one hand on the wheel and the other on the gears, especially when driving in the city where it's stop and go all the time. God i miss automatics!

kelliluvtbbt Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 don't know... just noticed that her hands never left the wheel I detest them. can't agree with you there. learning to drive stick was a pain in my butt! still is a pain. I also miss cruise control. I used to use that all the time when driving on highways in the States.
Stephen Hawking Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 (edited) learning to drive stick was a pain in my butt! still is a pain. I learned in a manual, and didn't find it particularly difficult. Also, by passing in a manual, it allows me to switch between them, whereas passing in an automatic, would have limited me to automatics. I also miss cruise control. You can get cruise control on manuals. Edited June 8, 2015 by Stephen Hawking

PatsyR Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Even assuming she did drive a stick shift (which seems unimportant to all the car scenes we've seen her in so far), I can't help but wonder if the writers would indicate shifting cues in the stage directions. "In her fury with Sheldon's remark, Amy downshifts and tears out of the parking lot."

PatsyR Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Sorry about that, Stephen. I can say that I learned to drive on a stick shift and think of it as a badge of honor. I can definitely imagine that if Amy can drive a stick, she might very well consider herself a bit of a "bad ass." You've got me curious now how it all figures into your fanfic. shamour Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 I'm really curious about your fanfic now, Stephen:-) I've driven manuals as well as automatics and I've never heard about cruise control, but it sounds cool...
Stephen Hawking Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 (edited) Stick shift (aka manuals) are very much the majority, in the UK. BTW. There was a very funny scene, in Sex and the City, where Carrie is trying to drive a manual, and makes a complete Horlicks of it. ATOB Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Stephen, don't worry about it, just publish. Tell the tale you want to tell. You can put a disclaimer at the start or end to stymie anyone who's too pedantic to suspend their disbelief over such a minor detail if it's bothering you. Carpet diem and that innit! I'm sorry, you've lost me. What has Greece got to do with it? cars being sold in Greece - where I have been living for the past 20 years- at that time didn't have any form of extra comforts at the price range we were willing to pay. Models after 2010 have these extra features..like a cruise control option. Edited June 8, 2015 by kelliluvtbbt
Stephen Hawking Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Sorry , , I didn't realize you were in Greece.
phantagrae Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 I learned in an automatic (we had a Chevy Suburban before they were commonplace, in 1974), but since then went back and forth between sticks and automatics, just due to circumstances. I drove my little Honda Civic hatchback, a stick, for about 14 years (251,000 miles!) until I bought my current car--a Honda Accord. It's an automatic and has cruise control, which I use on the 15-hour drive to my parent's home. BTW, do NOT use cruise control if you're sleepy! But I always miss my little Civic and that stick. Still, it's easier to eat in the car, when you have to, and all that. As for Amy, if the stick is germain to the story, just go ahead and use it. I don't think you even need to include a disclaimer unless it's somehow the main issue in the story. Also, most automatic cars these days have the shifter on the console between the front seats, where the stick shift would be. Having the shifter on the steering column is unusual, except for certain models, I guess.
Stephen Hawking Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Having the shifter on the steering column is unusual, except for certain models, I guess. There was a time (many moons ago), in the UK, when it was quite common, for the gear lever of a manual, to be on the steering column.
