meka3000 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I have to admit I was a bit shocked to have a Beverly/Leonard moment completely repeated from 5 years ago. Did the writers not remember they already did that one before? Different scenario, Bev was under the influence of alcohol last time. Here was her TRYING to make a genuine effort. They sure did a number on Leonard, He was dissed from start to finish. Why I don;t know but it's been happening all season. Perhaps the reasoning is that the more you drag Leonard down, the more you pump Sheldon up. Yes because Sheldon NEVER get's dissed at all, EVER! BlackWhiteRose Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I loved the episode! So happy the moms finally met! Mary and Beverly were on fire! I loved it! And the boys cleaning the kitchen was so amusing *LOL* Loved the end where they sang *LOL* I laughed so hard! That was my favourite episode of the season so far! Chelle Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Great!! Another Leonard bashing episode. Don't even know why I bothered to watch that shit. Best bits for me was the Howard,Raj, Stuart & Bernadette plot. Now that was funny. A plot. Meh apart from the little lenny moments. Sent from my SM-N910F using Tapatalk The problem is they made Leonard the straight man of EVERYBODY, even the guests stars, and straight man ONLY. While his character is important to reel in the antics of his social circle and the guests, to provide the voice of reason in the middle of the shenanigans in TBBT world, his character got left out and at times, lost. Except the upcoming season finale's revelation, his character is left as a straight man ONLY for the entire season 8, and some episodes in the previous seasons. wowbagger Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 What also seems interesting is that Bernie actually hangs a lantern on her turning into Howard (and his cronies') mother. The difference here is that this time it is sympathetically presented, which I like. The show goes far too often to the 'Mean Mommy' well with Bernie. It's nice when it acknowledges that it can't be a picnic for her either.
wowbagger Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Sometimes I cannot get over how brilliant Christine Baranski is as an actress, even down to every little "tsk" she makes. I know a lot of people hate Beverly, but she's my absolute favorite because what Baranski does with her is SO funny, and sophisticated, and just takes a hateable character to a whole other level. Match her with a woman of Laurie Metcalf's talents and have them fighting over Freud and Jesus - with an elated Sheldon and irritated Leonard on hang to boot - and how could I complain? On the Go Fug Yourself website, one of the bloggers remarked 'You know how some people feel about Beyonce? I feel like that about Christine Baranski.' I completely, completely get it. This episode the writers seemed to understand the difference of her being snarky to him verses her just playfully teasing him. I actually felt like she acted like she was engaged to him, again in this episode (WOW, two in a row) and actually supportive. It is just a shame the writers took so long this season to figure this out. Edited May 1, 2015 by SRAM

Normally not siding with your future mother in law is a bad thing but in this case it was Penny supporting Leonard.

Penny was very supportive to Leonard there wasn't a hint of snarkyness but playful teasing about the ring and her telling Leonard, at least she loved him. It was sweet. But the Leonard bashing again ruined it for me because it could have being a great episode as all the other plots were very funny. kerrycec03 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Loved the episode. Laughed out loud a few times (the dirty double mother suckler was perfection). Been wanting a Mary/Bev interaction and they were hysterical. And Penny in the mix worked. The Bernadette and the guys plot was cute. Kathy2611 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I liked this episode a lot but the writers once again threw consistency out the window. Did anyone notice when Beverly asked Mary when she FIRST realized that Sheldon had such a remarkable mind? Her answer? Something he build in the tool shed.....when he was 13!! What about the fact that he went to college AT THE AGE OF 11!!!!!! Hell, my husband even caught that and he's only a "casual" viewer!! Shamyfan Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I caught that too. Maybe he was home for the summer from college and did it.
EleQueen Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I caught that too. Maybe he was home for the summer from college and did it. I think her point is that Mary should have already known that Sheldon was a remarkable kid since he was able to go to college at the age of 11, in the first place. Yes exactly!! She couldn't think of ANYTHING before age 13? Seriously, writers? Pay attention to your own damn story. Hell, she could've even started at the fact he was WRITING stuff way beyond his abilities when he was 5 or 6!!!! I forget what episode that was but Penny said something about being a blonde monkey to him or something.
PatsyR Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I was slightly disappointed that the writers used vignettes that we've seen before or that were similar to ones we've seen before (the yellowcake uranium in the shed story, the attempt by Sheldon's mother to hug him, etc.) but I can forgive them because even just a few minutes of Christine Baranski and Laurie Metcalf interacting is gold. My guess is that perhaps Amy was originally written into the scene with the mothers but was removed at the last minute because of Mayim's personal tragedy, and the writers had to scramble to rewrite it to cover her absence. I just feel that there were some gaping holes in that scene and it might be because it was a last minute rewrite.
tallin Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Yeah... what to say to writers "constant" writing this season...and aside the fact that Sheldon was remarkable way earlier I also can't understand how Sheldon couldn't know buying uranium this way is illegal. He was already at the university. He won outstanding award at fourteen (sorry can't remember the name) in physics. But in thirteen he had no idea you can't illegally build nuclear reactor? Isn't this kind of knowledge like physics 101?

kimbee73 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I noticed the 13 line too and said um didn't he graduate from high school at 11? Other than that I loved this episode..... Mary had me cracking up with every line she spoke. Beverly at the end trying was really funny.
vasu Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 (edited) Why would anyone lie to their fiance about the ring? and buy a box to cover it up???so cheap.... dump him penny.....he is a liar and cheaterwhy would leonard buy it with Sheldon is in the first place??? so stupid....even at the end of the episode leonard is not given his moment after all the putdowns...should have clearly told beverly to get the hell out....but he is pathetic...and has zero balls......the A plot was funny until they started repeating the same joke again and again and again and again.......b plot was a total waste...... because they have to have all the caste members in every episode they seemed to have the b plot...it would have been a lot better if there was only A plot and given a bit of story.... phantagrae Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I loved it, though the Howardette plot seemed a little slow to me. I still enjoyed it, though. And I think that it's probably not that far off for many men of Howard's generation--the temptation to lay around the house wasting time with video games and buddies is great. And men sitting around the house while women do the housekeeping--even working women--is still all too common. So I can see Beverly getting fed up with it. She seems like she's not much of a lazying around character. Penny, for instance, is perfectly happy to hang out in sweats and let her apartment get messy or whatever, but Bernie has never been shown to be that way. So when she's got 3 adult men lying around not doing anything to help with the household while she's out running errands and getting things done, I can see where that would be frustrating and aggravating. And I loved Howard's "Kiss ass" comment. I was also a little surprised that Mary didn't come up with something from Sheldon's early childhood for her anecdote, but I figure the yellow cake story gave them more comedy to mine, with the play on "yellow cake from Chad" vs "twinkies from a friend named Chad" and all that. Plus it is a bit of continuity from her first appearance on the show when she told that story to the gang. I did like that Mary stood up for herself against Bev's insulting condescension, but then was ready to apologize later, and Bev realizing that perhaps she might have done better to have given Leonard the same kind of unconditional love that Mary gave Sheldon. In the end, though, it's really not in her nature. And I love that though Sheldon fussed at his mother about not spouting her religious beliefs at Beverly, he was still beaming at her as she told stories about him, and they were even smiling at each other when Beverly said she was going to try to change her approach to Leonard. I also love that Mary was going to make spaghetti with hotdogs for everyone. I knew that some would be complaining about Leonard being ignored or put down by his mother in this episode, but I think it simply underscores how cold she is, which the writers have never backed down from, and it also helps to highlight Bev's attempt to change at the end. I don't think that Bev is going to turn into a warm supportive mother, but I think that the contrast makes her attempt stand out that much more. It's also true that Leonard is quiet in his acheivements and in his manner, so he's not going to be the attention grabber that "Sheldon, Boy-Genius" is. People fuss over prodigies, but the rest of us are just expected to do our best and our level of acheivement may not be as appreciated as that of a kid who goes to college at 11 or who tries to build a nuclear reactor at 13. I also loved the "super weaner" and "dirty double mother suckler" line. GOLD! Loved it all around, though I still wish the B-plot had been a bit funnier or more active or something. P- "I know, I know." Why take Sheldon's word for it? The guy's been known to make some pretty basic errors. And Leonard didn't cheat. It's not the writers who are diminishing the character. I don't think there's any reason to disbelieve Sheldon in that moment, but one question I have is about the supposed Tiffany's box. Since he had the ring in his wallet, why would Leonard have a box for it? Anyway, one thing that is clear, though, is that Leonard is loved by all those around him, including Beverly (though she doesn't know how to show it apart from some kind of academic reward system), Sheldon, and Sheldon's mom. stardustmelody Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 (edited) Hilarious episode. Loved all of it....but Mary calling Sheldon Lion food was probably the funniest line all night. So well done by the veteran actresses and I thought the three guys and Bernie were hilarious as well. The tag was priceless with them singing at the end while doing their "chores". So funny. By the way, promo pictures were finally released and are up in the Production Journal. Edited May 1, 2015 by stardustmelody
