This is interesting to me because the rest of your ramblings is exactly why I don't think that is what Lorre meant at all. Admittedly, I might be biased here because it'd fit my own opinion so neatly, so apologies for that, I guess. But in context of the character's development over the years, in context of the episode in question and even in context of the other interviews Lorre gave these days I don't believe for a moment that he thinks Sheldon at this point in life is doing this solely for some sort of clinical scientific reason or whatever.

I think what he was talking about was how Sheldon tries to compartmentalise and reflect on these big developments in his life, and more specifically why he says the things he says immediately after the act. It's not unlike comparing the train kiss with that banjo player, even though we all know that this kiss was something that undoubtedly caused a huge shift inside of him. And on that same note I have no doubts that reaching that level of physical and emotional intimacy with Amy will cause an equally huge shift inside of him. The most interesting part in Lorre's interview (and Molaro has hinted something similar) is the question of how he'll deal with all of this once his mind has processed what happened and we see him and Amy interacting in regular situations again. With kissing we saw how that quickly became a regular part of their dating protocol. I expect the writers to try and figure out a similar way to get the couple to that "they do that now" point when it comes to sex.

That said though, you can tell with the episode and the interviews that for all those bold story telling decisions they made this year, they're still treading very carefully around the topic of Sheldon's urges which makes me think that first and foremost they want to see how the general audience received the story line. Seeing the overwhelmingly positive reaction this got I'm hoping that they can put whatever worries they might have had aside and write the next stories with the appropriate confidence - and maybe then we'll finally get that post-coitus cuddle and Sheldon with messy sex hair!

Oh, I agree that, very frequently, what shows up on screen does much to recontextualise what was said in interview by the writers.

The post-SiK comparison to the banjo player was fascinating to me precisely because it may have looked deflating that Sheldon was stacking kissing Amy along with the banjo player, but it was huge to me-and to a gobsmacked Leonard- precisely because it was so unprecedented that Sheldon would think of physical intimacy with another human as one of the most wonderful things about a trip. And then, when pressed to rank the experiences, Sheldon says he'd have to gather additional data (God bless Leonard's 'Additional data- YOU DAWG!'). So perhaps we're meant to think of that when Sheldon says 'I can't wait till your next birthday to do that again'. It's his 'let me gather more data' approach at play. I'm quite pleased to think of it that way, certainly!

The only thing that had me narrowing my eyes a little was the whole 'But don't worry, guys! Sheldon's still Sheldon! He's still above sex!' vibe. The anxiety of it. And then I thought 'Ah, whatever. So long as that is not what winds up on screen, I'm not bovvered.'

You know, I think this is the main difference between "massive" fans like ourselves and general viewers; for us the turning point, as you said, was the train kiss, that was really unexpected and showed us a new side of Sheldon, his turmoil, his surprise in actually feeling the kiss and liking it...in that moment, for example, the line about the "additional data" or the "banjo player" was reassuring (at least for me), Sheldon was still Sheldon but he now had in himself  this all new passion. Everything that came after it, for us that  pay so much attention to every Shamy related development, was a natural progression, at some point even irritatingly slow, because we already knew that Sheldon can be still Sheldon and at the same time show love and intimacy desire. So, the line about the "once a year" for us is superfluous, we don't need reassurance about the fact that the character will not change and intimacy will add something to his quirks without altering his essence. But, for the generals audience this might have been not that obvious, for them some sort of reassurance might have been needed. As a matter of fact, they were worried about nothing, most of the comments about the episode in general and Shamy in particular are really positive but, if you read the comments on line, many people liked that very line pretty much  and found it funny and "in character"...So, maybe, it was a wise choice to put it in there, for the sake of general audience...

Perhaps they might put some line about their sexual activities off screen at future episodes, for the sake of the shamy shippers too...

“I don’t think we ever tapped into Sheldon being asexual enough that we ever thought it would be a sellout when we got to this point,” Molaro said. “It was something we talked about early on, but once he met and started dating Amy – which has now been 5 ½ years – it just sort of evolved naturally. So it wasn’t a real concern of ours.”

From the article from tvgrapevine.com.  Enough said about desire etc.

And from the same article:

Despite considerable discussion and even scholarly dissertations about Sheldon’s eccentricities – and whether they might be associated with some sort of condition, such as Asperger’s syndrome – Molaro said, “Sheldon the character has never gotten any kind of diagnosis. As far as we’re concerned, with his quirks and all, he’s just Sheldon to us.”

This was noted at one of the Comic-Cons as well.  Sheldon's reactions to things and for some who feel that he didn't react enough to coitus with Amy, he's just Sheldon!

I already argued many times with people about Sheldon's behavior, but I'll not do it this time: if it had anything to do with Asperger, autism, and many other psychological conditions. He behave like if he really had one of these "disorders", and in my opinion, biologically talking, he do has, even with Chuck, Molaro and everybody else involved at the creation and development of the character kinda of don't caring about labeling him as this or that. But see, I think like this because I answer to fiction in the watsonian way, the writers and some of you maybe not. Sheldon has his own ways, unique characteristics that makes him who he is, and if the topic come up on screen, I think it would be a good thing not define who he is having as base his hypothetical autism, his hypothetical asperger, hypothetical whatever-you-want, etc. He is one of the most complex characters of all time, and that's very commendable.

Really makes me wonder how they'll go about this.

To come back to the kissing example: a few episodes after the train kiss we got a scene in which Amy reminded him at the end of date night that they do that now and he complies like it's the most normal thing in the world. It's quite effective in establishing that it's a regular activity for them now and the humour plays it down a bit. But at the same time treating it in a casual way like that is huge in itself.

So that makes me wonder if they'll do something similar with their sexual activities. For the next two episodes they seem to have completely dropped the subject and I think we only get a one liner from Raj indicating that the guys know about it. Maybe we do get date night sleepovers with optional hanky panky next? Who knows?? Sheldon still wants to marry her which would include living together at some point. Might as well use the time now to get used to sharing a bed.

But whatever, maybe that's just me being weirdly optimistic. Then again, even without them making love we've been spoiled rotten by the last two episodes with as many and more intense kisses than the last five years combined, and so much sweetness I might just start puking rainbows. Good lord!

To address subjects like this they can always mix comedy with something meaningful in a casual way. Works like an icebreaker to such a delicated topic...not so delicated since now they're no longer virgins, but still fragile. It could be a sleepover, for example (and just a sleepover) with a comment like "Hey, I loved that we were spooning last night but the next time, please, don't poke your knee on my back." at the next day. The possibilities are endless now, if they know how to use it.

On the next Valentine's day, when Amy sets up an event like the train that she knows he will love, instead of saying "I feel the sudden urge to hug you" and then let's it pass, now he will say "I have the sudden urge to go mess up your hair," raises eyebrow looking for confirmation that she is interested.  "Okay, then let's do this," grabs Amy's hand and they head to be bedroom.   Nothing more need to be done or said.   That will be enough to make us squeal with delight.

Yes but they will need to show/mention it more than just once.  I remember seeing a bunch of comments after the 8.24 make out scene where a lot of fans were upset because they thought it was out of place for them to "suddenly" start kissing like that after the train kiss.  Apparently they missed the scene you mentioned and the fact that they "do that now."

I wonder if there is a fanfic that depics Shamy's first night together as close as the episode. Any good FF recs?

I'm working on it, but I've been a bit distracted by a project at work, holiday events, and essaying on this forum, etc.

I've been studying the slo-mo videos so I can get the moment just right.

The story is The emotion culmination.  (see link below).  Only the reconciliation kiss scenes are up at the moment.

Wait what? Oh dear. I would have also preferred more kissing scenes in S8 -don't get me wrong- but they did allude to that happening off screen: at one point Leonard said he saw them kiss once, and when Sheldon is out shopping for a Christmas gift with Bernie he mentioned Amy kissing him under a mistletoe (tbf, he complained about it happening in public, but still). Oh well, it's probably too easy to miss for casual viewers though, you're right.

With all those fanfic-like scenes in the last two episodes I hope the writers have lost a bit of that restraint and have less qualms about including intimate scenes between those two. We may not get another bed scene right away but I sure hope to see some other signs of/comments on their physical intimacy.

Not gonna lie though, I'll probably be highly amused if someone missed 9x11 of all episodes and then complaints about whenever there's another bed scene with Shamy. LOL

But I'd rather Sheldon plan it after he wants it not because "I'm doing this as a gift to Amy to show how important she is to me (so important that I'd like to do something that's always been and maybe still is challenging to me to please her).

I think first time sex is going to be challenging/nerve-racking for most people, and doubly so, when the person you are doing it with is, likewise, doing it for the first time.

It's very  much a case of the blind leading the blind, and that's going to pretty scary, for both of you.

Thanks for sharing the video!  There's a clip where Sheldon appears to be smelling Amy's hair and it's killing me because I can't remember the episode. It appears at 0:56 in the video. Can someone help me?  Thanks

This is in the S8.1 premiere.   Sheldon is actually bending down to whisper "Shotgun" in her ear (in the police station) before running to Leonard's car and getting in the front passenger seat.   Amy thought he was going to say something endearing to make up for not saying goodbye, leaving for 45 days, and then not calling her to come get him.

It's from 8x01 when he whispers "Shotgun!" into her ear.

I think this is the scene you are referring to, from The Hook-Up Reverberation:-

Leonard: Yeah, you didn’t lose anyone when you met Amy.

Sheldon: Yeah, well, no, this study refers to romantic partners. Not the way I would categorize the two of us.

Raj: You guys kiss and hold hands.

Leonard: I’ve seen him do it. It’s not romantic.

I can't remember if it was in this thread or somewhere else, but I just remembered someone asked which book Amy was reading (when Sheldon called her to tell her he intended to spend her birthday with her), and I did some digging and it's Wedding Cake Murder by Joanne Fluke... Now that title gives me all sorts of deliciously sinful ideas on how to write a Shamy Wedding Episode *rubs hands together*, oh, the possibilities.

Now excuse me while I go cook up my evil master-plan...

And he could say "I'm sorry... and that wasn't my knee..." and everyone could just stop eating lol

Or "Yes, I'm sorry for poke your back with my...knee." the same way he told Kripke that he was "giving to her good/well".

Surely he's not so big, that Amy mistakes it for his knee?

Once my cousin and her boyfriend were watching tv at bed. Her boyfriend fell asleep and start spooning with my cousin. By the morning, she was all excited and bragging herself, talking that her man got a hard on her at the middle of the night.
Later that day, she found out that the tv remote control which was resting on his stomach fell to the side when he slept and got stuck between them. That was what was poking her back. They had a huge fight because of it at that day.

So yeah, it can happen...unless he sleep in the fetal position.
