For me it was the hand-holding that was touching. It looked so tender and sweet, more intimate than a cuddle in many ways.

I loved their expressions in the post-coitus scene and the way they were holding hands seemed incredibly sweet, but also with almost this sense of teamwork like, "we just had amazing sex and now we're gonna take on the world!" :icon_cheesygrin:

Oh if there'd ever be a Shamy Con I'd swim across the ocean to get there!
(Fine, I'd use the plane, but that doesn't sound as dramatic as swimming across the ocean..)

Yeah, I think about it now and I can see how the cuddle may have been too much at this point in time. This is probably just another thing with Shamy that we'll get to see a progression of. After their first time having sex, we get them holding hands, but if you guys notice, they can't even look each other directly in the eyes, which I find so cute because it's like they're both a little shy, despite what they had just done.

In the future, they won't be as shy about it.  We will probably get to see them cuddling and able to look each other in the eye and maybe even a few sweet kisses thrown in? ;-)

I have an entirely different take on the hand holding than I had initially.    I think for Shamy this is actually more intimate than cuddling or sex.

By holding hands, they are entwining their fingers together and creating an emotional connection of trust, bonding, and support in a non-sexual way.  They have been friends and emotionally intimate long before the sex, and their relationship will continue to be more than just about the sex, no matter how good it is.

Here they are, having reached the height of their physical intimacy, and now they are returning to the basics of human touch, one that Sheldon thought at one time was ridiculous and not a fan of.    I think that his doing it in a private setting, not for a public show that they are together, speaks volumes for exactly how much more intimately connected he feels to Amy.

I don't think a cuddle would have conveyed this so well, since we have seen Sheldon cuddle with Amy before, and with less resistance than that of an old-school gesture such as holding another's hand.

In addition, as Sheldon has decided at the moment on this being a once-a-year event, perhaps he feels cuddling would get them too close too quickly to the new status of their relationship.    He needs some space to articulate in his brain what has just happened and how he will compartmentalize it all as they move forward in their relationship.

Here is something else.   Whose to say they don't eventually cuddle off screen?   Just because we didn't see it, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Sheldon said, "I look forward to you next birthday when we can do this again."   That's an ambiguous expression.    It does not necessarily mean that they won't do it again before then, only that he intends to do it again in a year.   It gives him a way out of making a commitment of doing it before then without stating that he won't either.

Yes, I think their moment of post-coital reflection, while not gazing into each other's eyes, fits their personalities.   Their brains are probably moving 1,000 miles a minute analyzing every detail of their sexual experiment, and the results are they both enjoyed it and want to do it again with each other.

It seems they are both still in shock over the outcome.   Amy is like, this is what I've been waiting for all this time?  Sheldon did this to me?   I'm so giddy that I can't look at him right now.    Sheldon is feeling accomplished, laying there like's he's lost in a daydream having just won a trophy for riding his mare without even knowing he would qualify, let alone gain victory for getting them both successfully across the finish line.

There's a blogger on tumblr called annoyinglywaywardblaze (can't figure out how the link the post but) she says this

I don’t think he was disinterested in having sex, but reconciling with Amy was enough to peak his interest as to offer it. One constant about Sheldon: when he wants something, he knows it. Something that no one has picked up on: Jim’s approach to the post coital Sheldon may have been that of calm and enlightened…peace of mind, body, and spirit.

Sheldon has to achieve this state via Amy in order to have mental clarity to achieve accolades in scientific community.

Yet another POV, but interesting enough to share whilst we are back on the topic

So i'm sure you guys have discussed the episode like a million times from all angles by now, but i thought i'd add my 2 cents : D
(even if it's probably a bit unpopular opinion )

So i literally loved most of it... Then something in the end kind of upset me and what upset me more is that i couldn't figure out what! At first i thought it was the cut scene, but then after a while i realized that's not it.
(And regarding the cut scene, it's not its absence that has upset me.. It's the fact that writers have decided it to remove it for a certain reason, and i thought that reason was not to show Sheldon's softer/in love/at ease with sex side and that has really upset me. But then i was reading this thread having not logged on, and someone pointed out - don't remember who, sorry - that it's probably because if it wasn't cut, the whole 'mirroring' joke wouldn't be so .. well, mirroring, and it wouldn't be as funny. So rn i also think that's the main reason, and it's made me feel much much better about it being cut... Cause at first, i was really sad, and i know i'm in the minority but the kiss in bed didn't make up for it for me...).

So anyway. I felt because i didn't like the ending, it spoiled the all episode for me in a way : ( And i felt bad about it for a while, but then i watched a bunch of S6 & S7 episodes trying to get distracted, and omg the contrast of Sheldon then and Sheldon now is just unparalleled. And i just felt much better and was able to enjoy the episode again, and i thought maybe i was paranoid before.. I really couldn't understand why i didn't like the ending. I mean it had 'few hours' and Amy's sex hair and them holding hands, so i was supposed to love it.

And then yesterday i watched the episode in my language and it all made sense! They've translated a couple of Shamy lines somewhat different, and that was a HUGE deal for me! Instead of "well i've enjoyed that more than i thought i would" it was  "I didn't even think i would like it that much" (and said in a softer voice ) and instead of Amy's ecstatic "that works for me" it was "i don't mind " in a much calmer voice. And just those 2 lines changed, and i immediatey LOVED the ending completely... Which made realize, that way (to me) they seem much more balanced and on the same page.
While with their original lines / voices / the way they speak, it makes me feel like Sheldon was much less into it than Amy and it's really upset me...
Actually i think Jim's performance there was ambiguous, and i think it' s on purpose - after reading some of the latest Molaro interviews + thinking about the fact that there's no Shamy in the same room in the 2 next episodes, and that there's a break, i honestly think that actually, the writers did that deliberately to buy themselves some time to watch the audience reactions as that whole things, and to decide which direction to go next.

It also makes me happy (since the absolute majority's reaction to this is good lol ) cause i think it indicates they're not done with this storyline... I mean, i always kinda thought that they see it as culmination (hence the reluctance to show it for so long), that after that it will be just like 'ok... now shamy have coitus just like everybody else'. That there will be no comedy about it, that they were mostly doing it for the shippers and that after it's actually happened they would not really mention it much (just state they're doing it on occasion and that's it) in fear of changing Sheldon too much, making him lose his cynism and become hippie dippy... But now i think maybe they do plan to have some comedy with it, if the whole coitus thing is received well. Like maybe Sheldon actually planning to wait a year (wtf his reasons would be though, i don't get it) and then realizing he doesn't want to, and trying out hints but Amy just doesn't get it ... or something like that....

Anyway my point is that i'm hopeful and not sad anymore : D And i've been watching clips from the episode on youtube today, and i am overwhelmed at how much support Shamy has with general public... Like literally i don't know any ship that has that much love from casual viewers. I think this is so sweet : )

Nothing speaks to the heart better than hearing something in your own language.  I'm glad you got the chance.

The same goes for love.  Sheldon and Amy broke up because they weren't speaking and understanding each other's love language.  Sheldon was trying to communicate with Amy through analogies and metaphors he understands.  She needed to hear and have him show her exactly how he felt.   The break up taught Sheldon that he needs to express himself from his heart and taught Amy that she needs to seek clarification of the meaning behind what he is trying to say before reacting.

It will always be a work in progress for them.

Bring it on, writers! I can't wait.

Yes, after thinking, that brings a new expectation and excitation for the future episodes.

I had this same problem. To me, they could show a little bit more of excitment from Sheldon after the end. But then someone pointed out that saying that line that way was a way to show us that Sheldon enjoyed the experience and still make him sound as Sheldon, the quirky weirdo guy.

"I enjoyed that more than I thought I would" doesn't mean that he thought he wasn't going to like it. In my interpretation, means that he knew he would like it, but not that much. Ever since he considered having sex he thought it as an act of love (double kill: he abdicated Star Wars and gave to his girl the gift she most wanted for a long time), but in the process, it became about lust too.

And when they finished (for the last time) he had this epiphany. It was better than he thought. Just like when he was scared of the blue jay and then became a mommy

For me, as I said before, it's a way to keep Sheldon in his quirks and his own way without betraying his own personality. A way to don't sexualize the character: yeah, he had sex and he loved it, but that's not ruling his life from now on. He is still himself, still the genius. He still thinks with his upper head, but when his woman needs him, he is ready to give her what she wants.

I think it is a smart move on the writers' part and the producers to wait and see what the reaction of the audience would be to Shamy coitus.  Obviously, from what I have read (here, on social media, on youtube) that it has been pretty positive.  I think they now have to decide in which direction they will go with this.  They have been pretty good at trying to keep the characters in character and not change them too much.  Any change seems to be organic.  Remember, they have been on 8.5 seasons and easily could get into a rut with things.  I think what they are trying to do is avoid the classic "jump the shark".   It may happen but so far, imo, they haven't.

I understand your feelings. It was kinda what I felt. Personally, I prefer the kiss in the earworm episode, and the kiss in the train. And, yet this episode (the 11th) is perfect ! In so many ways. I love it but I felt also not completely satisfied and I don't know why. Yet it was funny, so tender, and well playing. Maybe it's because we have reach a goal.

But now I am even more excited to discover (and expect) in some future episodes the display of their affection, the mention of their new intimacy, and see them happy and always weird in their own lovely way. I want to see their complicity again and a little more tenderness between them, but not too hippy.

yea i'm not saying i think that line meant he thought he'd hate it! I know it didn't. Basically, to me it would sound good if he said it differently.. You know, like with the voice he had after SIK in 7x15 or 9x10... But his tone, or voice, or way of speaking, idk what it was , made it sound not great for me = (

And i thought i was nitpicking or paranoid, but i was reading through previous pages just now and i saw koops and some other people mentioning the exact same thing ( i probably won't be able to express it as well as them  x D ) . But it's like, his demeanor, or looks, or voice, idk, kind of change pre-coitus and after-coitus. I kind of wanted him to be after coitus in the same way he was when they were kissing on the couch, or when he was waiting for her in bed, or after the kisses in the Earworm Reverberation (i think in those moments he's IC but also very into it ), but to me he looked very different.

But like i said, i really do believe now it was writer's choice to be ambiguous in case the public's reaction is bad

me too, nothing beats the kisses in the Earworm Reverberation to me! Idk why, maybe because they were hugging/embracing at the same time... But they were just perfection!

I thought that, i guess after Earworm we have just set our goals SUPER high!

And i agree with the rest : )

Just had a thought.  I think the writers are playing "hard-to-get" with us.  If a person is infatuated with someone, doesn't that special someone seem more enticing when slightly aloof.  The cool, casual emotional pullback of one half of our favorite ship is tantamount to making us want more, become more curious, intigued, beguiled.  Just as we wonder what our object of affection is thinking, feeling, we too wonder about the truth about the ship. The writers have us right where they want us, obsessed and tuning in for more.

I think we should all take a SHIP! (S.S. Shamy!) :icon_cheesygrin:

I don't like boats because they make me seasick, but I can open an exception if this one is guided by Captain Jim (and now someone post a picture of him to our appreciation and delight).

I'm happy.  Sheldon went into the evening with a goal. He surpassed that goal and was quite pleased with the outcome (as was Amy).  I think we will get more from the writers, but it will be subtle.  Affectionate tones, hand holding, cute conversations.  We've already gotten a taste of that in the next two upcoming episodes with their Skype calls.  I think we might get another bed scene during Season 9, but would be perfectly happy with having him asking her to stay over or breakfast in their PJ's or a steamy kiss good night.

I'm happy right now.

The more I think about this line the more I take it to mean he went into this experience feeling like the main objective was to show Amy how much he wants to be on that level of intimacy and commitment in their relationship ("it's an important night for us"), and THAT is what he "expected"/wanted to gain out of the experience. But it turned out to also bring him and the love of his life a great deal of physical pleasure beyond what he was expecting, so he was happy to have achieved expressing his love for Amy while at the same time having gotten the added bonus of physical pleasure he wasn't even thinking about before going into this. I think a big reason he found coitus off-putting and ridiculous for so long is because he never had any desire to show anyone that level of commitment until he surrendered to his true feelings for Amy (thanks, earworm!), and while he knew there was physical pleasure to be gained from sex, he didn't think it was worth it since he had such an aversion to being touched to begin with. Shamy's coitus combined a level of intimacy (that he recently admitted to himself and then the girls that he wanted) and physical pleasure (that he didn't know he wanted) that past Sheldon wasn't interested in, but I think it's safe to say Amy's birthday present changed his opinion on that! ;)

And I think the line "I can't wait till your next birthday when we do that again" (paraphrasing...) was a parallel of the writers leaving the possibilities open based on the audience's reaction and Sheldon leaving the possibilities open based on Amy's reaction :)
