[Spoilers] Shamy: Season 9

Tensor

Recommended Posts

For me it was just Sheldon willingly trying to make a joke about a subject that clearly is very dear to him (women and their crankiness, I wonder what's so fascinating in that, maybe something his father used to say) to ease the tension. The joke of course didn't came out  so good, since he is not so good  at making jokes or at easing tension; I doubt he really believes Amy may be in menopause or that Meemaw may still have her cycle, JMO!

I could forgive it contradicting Season 1, but when the joke contradicts the current Season 9 premiere episode that includes of all things Lenny's wedding, and was so gut wrenching, that even the Shamy reconciliation and coitus haven't healed those wounds, yet the writers want to contradict and joke about the one line that started it all.  Not to mention that the episode has been replayed at least twice during the holiday hiatuses, and we are just over halfway through the season.  So, so sloppy.

Inconsistencies in shows are one of my biggest pet peeves lol... it bugged me so much that Phoebe on Friends had 2 different birthdays (and actually I think this happened with Ross too). I've been watching reruns of TBBT on tbs and just yesterday I was watching The Dumpling Paradox from S1, and there was a HUGE mistake made with Raj being able to talk in front of Penny... Penny comes in to 4a to complain about her whorish friend staying with her, and when Howard runs off to 4b to meet said whorish friend, Leonard mentions that they either have to play Halo one-on-one or cut Raj in half. Raj then says (with Penny right there in the room involved in the same conversation) something like "oh sure cut the foreign guy in half, there are a billion more of us". And then later when Penny decides she's done playing she says goodnight to Leonard and says to Raj "as always, nice talking to you Raj!" mocking that he doesn't talk in front of women... I mean I know it was season 1 but SERIOUSLY???

Since Touche isn't here right now the basic train of thought is:

- in 9x01 Sheldon made a comment about Amy's eggs expiring, ergo he knows what menopause is and when it happens

- in 9x14 now he's making a comment about Amy's and Meemaw's cycles syncing giving us a good old "Sheldon is clueless about uterus-stuff" joke that contradicts the earlier scene in that he should have known that Meemaw is too old to have a cycle

- the apparent contradiction causes frustration because 1) it's again for a lousy throwaway gag, and 2) the thing that it is contradicting is that one line from the breakup that was very painful for many.

Hope that helps. : )

(Personally I'm just rolling my eyes at it but I'm not upset.)

Okay, got it. Thanks!

I like this reading of it. Bad "joke" or misguided attempt to break tension.

  1. But you would think they could keep important canon straight.

Like Sheldon's on/off allergy to cats, and Leonard's on/off ability to drink wine.

In fairness, Penny was standing in the doorway, so he wasn't speaking directly to her, and there have been times where we've seen him speak, while in a room with women in it.

Of more relevance to me, is the one where Raj confirms someone else's comment, that a film is good, then puts his hand over his mouth, when he realizes Penny is sitting right in front of/next to him.

Or be prepared to be scorned at SDCC, when fans ask you to account for those inconsistencies; one of my favourite TBBT-related You Tube video is Bill Prady at some SDCC justifying himself for making Sheldon have two "first" kisses! I could ear him scrambling, it was hilarious! Anyway, I accepted his explanation, in my head his first kiss was with Amy, no matter what reason says!!

I actually loved that moment with the writers, i think it was so adorable!

Bill :
"Some people felt that Leonard's mom didn't count" points at himself - "Some people felt it did" points at Molaro

"Some people said - who's ever gonna ask?!?!" points at himself  *audience is dying* - "Some people said - they'll ask at Comic Con" - points at Molaro

I think it's so cute how the writers know we obsess over the smallest things

Exactly how I took it, as a crappy joke trying to break the tension.

Usually I just sigh at inconsistencies, because those happen almost in every show. Sometimes it's frustrating, but I try to not get myself worked up because of those.

Where are you from that a show about 20-somethings trying to get laid was a children's show?!

i'm not the person you asked but just wanted to weigh in, i live in Russia and here FRIENDS also was kind of a children's show, it was broadcasted at like 5pm, and i only heard about it from people my age (i was about 11 at the time ) , never from young adults! i've never watched it though back then. But Sex and the City was broadcasted at 11pm on one of the main channels and i remember watching it when i was like 13 and most of my friends have watched it then too.

I can't speak for all countries, but i guess in many countries, unlike in the US, the ratings regulations (i.e. PG/PG-13, etc) for tv are not as strict... Also i remember plenty of south american soap operas being broadcasted at daytime and prime time that were definitely much more 'adult' then any FRIENDS episode

To paraphrase Howard:-

Are you saying the male FMs are man-strating? :icon_biggrin:

Hey, I'm of the all inclusive sort!! lol

I tried making that break up video for you, and it wasn't working!  I added a little angst to my soulmates video for you!

Sorry about clip quality, there is some serious setting issues on my player and I don't know what is going on!

That is what is backwards to me.  We have to infer so much that is not explained regarding the plotlines (Emily and Penny reconciling their differences so she is part of the group, what Penny meant during the psychiatrist visit, what happened to Stephanie), but the overuse of inconsistent and cheap jokes, that in this particular case was one of the direct causes of the Shamy breakup, contradicting a major plotline, we have to grin and bear it like no big deal.  I might forgive forgetting the Season 1 episode where Sheldon asks Penny when her mother went into menopause to calculate the number of tampons to buy in bulk.  However, within the same season forgetting the actual line that shifted Shamy from on a break to broken up is very sloppy and why I wish the series would end strong in season 10, than sloppy in whatever season of ridiculousness.

I want it to end at Season 10 strong too. Maybe 11 should be a half season or a 16 ep, something where storyline can grow, but be resolved without beating a dead horse. I don't want my BBT to turn out like Roseanne...

Speaking as a Brit, I'd say our ratings (and not just for TV) are looser than those in America.

We Brits had topless models in our newspapers, as far back as 1970.

We don't pixelate nipples, when we show topless women on TV shows.

We even, once, had a totally naked game show, on TV.

I'd say TBBT is much more 'adult' than Friends.

i was thinking the same thing the other day, i mean early seasons Howard alone has been much more outspoken about adult themes than Joey & Chandler have ever been, in my opinion

Not just that brilliant fool.

In the BBT, we've had Leonard and Penny rolling in bed half naked, any number of references to masturbation (both male and female, including by robotic hand and electric toothbrush), group sex, suggestions of simulated fellatio, several acts of cheating (of various degrees of severity), assorted swear words and curses, and heaven knows what else.

What did we get in Friends?

One scene where Chandler almost gets caught masturbating by his wife, one scene where he calls himself a wank (not a wanker mind), a scene with Ross and Rachel in bed, discussing fantasies, and a scene the morning after Ross sleeps with another woman, while he and Rachel are apart.

Friends isn't in the same league.

I love Friends and love BBT but hate when they are compared.  Different shows (yes, I see why a similar audience is found between both shows).  I personally found Friends overall laugh out loud funnier BUT I find BBT much more driven on character growth.

All said and done I am dying for tomorrow TR and this Thursdays new episode to end some of the back & fourths I've seen in the last week.  When the debate on how long a woman is preggos came up I was like DUDE help us lol!

hahah i remember all those just was too lazy to list them all (except for Lenny rolling half naked in bed, i might not have paid too much attention to them , but i don't remember that being in any way more sexual than some of Chandler & Monica's scenes)

But in all fairness, there was more in FRIENDS! For example that episode where they got the free porn channel and were scared if they turned the tv off it would disappear.. Also Chandler & Joey mentioned porn a lot in early seasons as i remember! Chandler not being able to 'do it' after they got engaged, Monica explaining to Chandler how to touch a woman when he was dating Katy, looking kind of orgasming by the end of her explanation, and some others...

Still i agree , totally not as much as TBBT

so true! I definitely don't laugh with TBBT as much as with FRIENDS. In my opinion, comedy-wise FRIENDS had some of the most brilliant writing EVER... No matter how much time you've seen the episodes, you still laugh!

But I love the characters in TBBT , and the show overall, so much more... There is something about TBBT that is so captivating
