[Spoilers] Shamy: Season 9

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys. I'm sure I'll have a good time, regardless of how the episode turns out. I went to a few tapings last year and it's always really great just to be there and see all the cast in their element.

And of course I'll share spoilers. I doubt I'll write up a full on taping report, but I'll do a detailed as possible summary and answer any questions. I know how much most people want spoilers (myself included) and most will never have a chance to get to a taping. I also know that the majority of the folks on here hopefully aren't the types to tweet craziness to Bill if they're unhappy with what's shared. I'll be on here as soon as I can after I get out of the taping. :)

That's really sweet of you! I'm looking forward to it. No worries, I won't tweet anything (actually I don't even have twitter/facebook/IG).

Concerning Amy and Sheldon, I imagine it this way:

When Sheldon bothers Amy again, she'll give him a speech. Maybe something along these lines..

Sheldon, I really need time to think and I can't do this with you around. It's just that I'm struggling with our relationship, not because I don't love you or don't wanna be with you, no, it's quite the opposite. But right now I'm wondering if you feel the same way or if I'm pushing you into something you don't even want. Maybe you should think about this, too. Do you want this? Once you have contemplated this and are ready to tell me how you feel - I mean really feel, then we'll talk. Until that happens please respect my wish to not communicate.

Something like this but in more eloquent words..

which part do you agree with

That would be the Sheldon isn't perfect and how he's more sexist lately, which I had noticed.  I certainly disagree that Amy hasn't been patient with him and hasn't explained things to him.  She's been nothing but patient and does explain things to him.

Each character is flawed and they are all open to interpretation by fans. People who like the character will prefer seeing their goodness while those who hate them will rather see their bad traits. I don't think there's two people who will have the exact same opinion of what a character is like. Is Sheldon an obnoxious, selfish jerk or just a sympathetic man-child who doesn't realize how mean he can be at times? Is Bernadette a genuinely sweet girl who has to put up with a childish husband or a progressively meaner, shorter-tempered shrew? I think all the characters have had OOC moments depending on the situation and the writer, which makes it all the more difficult to describe how they are. At the end of the day, the best we can do is agree to disagree and respect each other's opinions.

well sure after she yells at him like she has to understand that Sheldon doesn't know when he does something wrong

She normally yells at him when he's been annoying.  When he kept going on about which game console to get for instance.  Even though it annoyed the hell of her, she still when with him to buy it and still stuck it out when he first changed his mind and then couldn't decide.  I'd have left him there.

I would also like to add that I don't believe there is just a thing as perfect anyway.... unless it's perfectly boring that is.

I agree with Star that the girl's inexperience shows through at times, but I also agree that Amy has a tendency to blow up at him. The times when she patiently explains things to Sheldon are usually when he's been annoying to other characters, rather than her. One of my biggest "problems" with Amy is her expectation that Sheldon will magically know what she's expecting of him and then blow up at him, or just generally get upset, when he doesn't meet that expectation. That's not a fair thing to do to any person, let alone someone like Sheldon who has such a difficult time reading people as it is. I'm not a fan of bashing either character, as they both have valid reasons to get upset at the other, but that is definitely my biggest pet peeve regarding Amy. My observation of the fandom through the years has shown quite a few people who like to vilify Sheldon anytime something goes wrong in the relationship and while it usually is his fault for doing XYZ, that isn't always the case. Anyway, I'm perilously close to going off on another tangent so I'll wrap this up by saying that I agree more than disagree with that tumblr user's assessment. (Though I don't necessarily share ALL her views)

I've said it before..Amy is not a victim nor a villain, neither is Sheldon. The writers took them down a path where they will determine their future....in the 9th season, it needed to happen.

she has some interesting points on the Amy character

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I feel the comments about how disrespectful the show has been to Sheldon is in itself disrespectful by the tone and choice of words used to express that opinion.

While some good points were made, the fact is that neither Amy nor Sheldon have been perfect or the best to each other in their relationship.  Amy is not innocent of manipulation or lying to Sheldon, and Sheldon is definitely not innocent of some negligence and verbal abuse toward Amy.    These, however, do not have to be deal breakers so-to-speak.    When you take into consideration how much these two have in common, the good that they bring out in each other, their friendship, and the fact that they enjoy each others' company, it is easier to cover over the mistakes, intentional or not.

I like that Shamy's relationship sends a message that no matter how broken two people are individually, there can still be love and successful commitment between those who are willing to make it work, and sex doesn't have to be the glue to keep it together.    Relationships are not perfect, and people are not always consistent.  Experiences and life changes people.

It seems the matter at hand is that the characters of Amy and Sheldon have changed and how this was not necessary.   Well, Penny said it best in The Table Polarization.   Relationships change people.   I don't think it is fair to want to put individuals into a specific mold so that they are deprived of the joy of experiencing love, enhanced friendships, understanding, and quality of life improvements that come with growth and development.    Who can say they are the same person they were 10 years ago?   A successful partnership stems from those who grow together through those changes, good times and bad, and during the times when the one you love has hurt you the most.

A comment is made regarding Amy keeping things in until she explodes, while I don't mean any harm or offense, women are known to be guilty of this.  We expect our men to be able to read our minds and get mad or emotional when they can't figure out what we are thinking, want, or need.   This is not sexist but a difference between men and women.   Furthermore, she is not asking for space from Sheldon to push him into sex, she is trying to help him see how his selfishness is causing a division between them.  In this area, she needs to learn how to better communicate with him in a language that he understands, without sarcasm.

As far as Sheldon becoming sexist is concerned, I disagree.  He used to have no deal.  He had no need to make distinctions between the sexes.   Now that he is in a relationship, things such a emotions, women's biological functions, reproduction, and his own needs as a male are more apparent to him.   Nonetheless, even before Amy, he made comments about Penny and her time of the month and urges several times.   I could be wrong, but I think everything he says is factual, though inappropriate at times.   I don't think Sheldon's intention is to imply that men and women are not equal, only different.

Regarding the butt slapping, I am not so sure that Sheldon did not know that Amy was enjoying the spanking, as he did comment that "you are not supposed to be enjoying this" but then let it go.    While I don't disagree that Amy took advantage of Sheldon's innocence of the sexual connotation here, Sheldon also got the satisfaction out of believing he was punishing her for lying.  This was a mutual win.   Regarding the drunk butt slap, I believe this was IC for Sheldon.   When he is drunk, he becomes less inhibited.   This was no doubt behavior that he had witnessed from his father toward his mother growing up.    Amy's facial expression at the end indicated her enjoyment and acceptance of this.   As hard as it is for us to understand, I feel that this butt slapping is a form of affection between these two and there is no harm in it, if it is something they both agree to and no one is getting hurt by it.   I want to reiterate that I am not condoning or promoting physical abuse of any kind, and I don't think the writers were either.

Shamy are going through a rough patch right now.  I agree with another commenter on this forum.   This seems like a drawn out argument more than a break up. They will get through this, but here's a revelation, Amy is still going to manipulate and Sheldon is still going to make inappropriate comments.   They aren't going to suddenly change who they are, but they will learn to work through it together with more understanding and communication.   They will still be unique, quirky, and all the things we love about them, but with growth.

I think the writer's have done a good job, in general.  They have gotten our attention, and whether we are disappointed in an outcome they have written for our favorite couple or not, it is enough to cause this forum to break records in commentary from those invested in the relationship.  People threaten to stop watching the show, but in reality, most will keep doing so because they need to know what is going to happen.    Frankly without the addition of new characters and personality development, I don't think TBBT would still be on the air.   The audience would have gotten bored and stopped watching then.

I still think it is a family ring, that Sheldon got from Mary when she came to visit.  How about she Skypes him at the end of the premier to see how the proposal went, he admits to failure and she encourages him to pursue her... which he fails at, hard...God, I want these two back together soon.

So we are kinda on the same page  :)

I really like the idea of the ring being a family ring, but won't be sirprised if it isn't. It would also make sense that Sheldon would call Mary about the non-engagement if it were a family ring. I mean, not that he wouldn't call her anyway, but if he was going to propose and Mary knew because either she gave him the ring when she visited or helped him pick it out (another favorite idea) it would make sense that he'd call to tell her about the break. I'm not sure what I expect them to say specifically, but I do think that Mary is the reason he went from depressed to crazily going after Amy. I'm looking forward to seeing how everything plays out. Is it September yet?! :D
