[Spoilers]Shipping Lanes: Season 9

I guess the current Penny-turning-into-Amy situation is similar to the Sheldon-turning-into-Leonard situation that the Lenny fans are complaining about. It is true that Penny's confidante up to... what? S7? used to be Leonard. He was the one she would go to with her issues and problems, not Sheldon (and viceversa). Sheldon would accidentally provide an insightful suggestion born out of his logic here and there, which was sweet and clever because it showed how even completely opposite POV's can sometimes be useful, but, for the most part, he wasn't the one who was there to listen and understand Penny because by definition they were meant to be as far apart on the spectrum as possible. I am not really sure how and why (and, tbh, I don't think the writers know/realize either), we started suddenly getting all these strings of storylines where it turns out Penny goes behind Leonard's back to Sheldon for advice/negotiations/what have you. (Meanwhile, you have Amy randomly and out of nowhere showing jealousy over how close they are when just two episodes before Sheldon opened up to her with something nobody allegedly knew about him and just last season she happily skipped around an escape room while encouraging them to take a test to see if they could fall in love... oooook then. Yes. This makes *so* much sense).

Now we are seeing the same thing with Penny taking over a role that was always, by definition, Amy's. Penny used to get Sheldon to do thing out of trickery into "social conventions", but she was hardly ever the one that patiently and understandingly helped him work through things. Let alone share his interests. One thing that strikes me as insane about this season is how on Earth we have Sheldon and Penny living under one roof and not had one single episode about them driving each other bonkers (massive comedy fodder), given that Sheldon used to climb the walls over stuff Penny did when she was barely staying over or just popping over to steal his milk. I do understand that through the years they've obviously both mellowed towards the other and become accustomed to one another's personalities, but such a drastic, non-confrontational turn in their dynamic is extremely OOC to me. The spark of the Shenny relationship to me was always the sibling love/hate they harbored for each other. And as much as I did enjoy some of their episodes in the last few years (Intimacy Acceleration is still one of my favorites), they've all become incredibly non-confrontational and I honestly missed the days where they used to butt heads. I think 5x02 was the very last hilarious Shenny episode to me. And I miss that.

More than anything, I miss the days when characters used to have very distinct personalities and defined roles, rather than this watered down, hollow ensemble.

When contract negotiations come around I honestly hope Johnny and Kaley walk away from this train wreck Leonard has lost all dignity and my growning disgust with Penny is beginning to color my view of Kaley.

I know they can't really say anything negative about the show but I hope they are as unhappy as we are about the current state of their charectors and it's not just about the money with them to because I would lose much respect for them both if that is the case

I could easily see Jims agent asking for a raise that would put his salary above everyone's else's, so you might see Johnny and Kaley walk.

But that wouldn't happen till season 12, because I think the option for 11 is at the same salaries and Kaley and Johnny can't legally walk.

Jum has asked for a higher salary before, he just didn't succeed in getting it.

Johnny and Kaley will not walk away from all that money. Plus, if they leave the show will fall apart and they can't afford to give it up. Their career prospects after the show is over are slim to none.

I know we are staying status quo thru season 11 and i have no doubt if Jim does ask for top status that TPTB will happily dump everyone else and actually go with the Sheldon show with a new crew of lower salary minions as they consider Sheldon to be the show as it is and lower costs equals more profit and that's all they care about at this point

You know, from the cast interviews at Paley Fest or for the 200th episode I've had the impression that the less longing to prolong their contracts beyond Season 11 (which ATM seems pretty likely to happen) were Jim and Simon, even if I can imagine it would be difficult to give up to their salaries if the opportunity of Season 12 becomes real. Of course, I don't expect those interviews to be an accurate description of the state of mind of the actors, but I saw it that way...

So two people who will have made 96 million dollars at the end of season 11 for four years work can't afford to walk away???? How much does bread cost in this land you live in???

And to TPTB it is the Sheldon show he is the only one they need sycophants are easy to hire

Penny has sided similarly with Sheldon before, this isn't new.  She sided with him when Leonard disproved his element, saying she understands that it is like a guy when you loose him you want him more.  She sided with him when everyone was bitching about her and Sheldon's moaning about their jobs, and they both agreed that she show go all out and pursue acting, which turned to be a bust.  So actually Penny siding with Sheldon against Leonard is not new and is no where close to all the times it has been her and Leonard against Sheldon.  Penny is a little self centered and takes Leonard for granted, maybe she is even a little high maintenance, but she has never shown any romantic desire for Sheldon and still loves Leonard, she just seems to be going through a crisis about growing up.

I didn't say it would be Romance, Penny would be able to act just as Immature and irresponsible as she allways has with Sheldon now picking up the bill instead of Leonard and Sheldon gets a devoted follower it works out well for both of them. Keepin it old style homeostasis

There's no such thing as too much money. The "can't afford" part was about their careers.

Complain all you want about the Sheldon Show, Johnny and Kaley aren't going anywhere.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jim was not crazy about a renewal beyond what he is contracted for. This is all my opinion (of course--why do I need to say that, ha!), but he seems to be the least passionate about his character and the show. Don't get me wrong, I have seen his enthusiasm. I just find it more tempered than say, Kaley and even the oh-so-private Johnny. I bet Jim would like to be less in the limelight and perhaps do more theater......

Lol yes there is such a thing as to much money and jim wasent the center of the TBBT universe then but that aside with the money they have in the bank they can bankroll almost any project they want to do.

They don't have to do something they don't want to because they can afford to do anything they do. And the point of a career is more than just to make money that's a job. Johnny is a private person and dosent like the attention anyway and Kaley will keep herself in the public eye as she does now.

Your argument dosent hold water, And you are fooling yourself if honestly think this.

You make money so you can do the things you enjoy, if making money is its ownpurpose well sorry but that's pretty f##ked up way to live life

Very true I think Jim sees acting as his craft, as an art form and is more concerned with quality and stretching his talents than money especially now that he has plenty. At least that is the impression I get

I'm not in the show business but I'm pretty sure that it takes more than being able to "bankroll any project they want" for two actors in Johnny's and Kaley's positions and circumstances to succeed.

Define success.  Kaley's already said she wants to move toward becoming a professional rider.  Doing an HBO movie or a one-shot guest starting role.   Johnny wants to move to producing.  They both could do that without adding anymore seasons of TBBT.

I'm talking about a successful acting career. Kaley knows that an HBO movie and a guest-star role will probably be the most she will get. I think Johnny is in a worse position. Both her and Johnny are free to do whatever else they want. Being a horse rider is something completely different and producing is something that many actors that for one reason or another believe they're not going to go far in acting turn to. Not saying that he doesn't want to do it either though. Just being realistic.

Are you really suggesting parson is the only one talented enough to continue in acting

I didn't even mention Parsons.

Your idea of success is pretty messed up

And you have more or less said that the two actors on the show with the most experience and success are no good. When Johnny and Kaley have allready "gone far" in acting.

Johnny and Kaley both have longer resumes than Jim and each has previous successful series to thier credit Jim is the new guy in this group

But I get the impression facts don't matter to you just your personal opinion

Kaley has been a working actor for 23 years and Johnny has been a working actor for 29 years.  Again, how does one define a "successful" acting career?

They have also worked their way to be among the highest paid actors on tv instead of lucking into that golden breakout one in a million role

Apparently successful acting career = Jim Parsons and no one else qualifies cause they aren't him

This is the reality of actors that come off sitcoms that have lasted for a decade or so. I'm just mentioning what happens most of the time.

I never mentioned Jim, except for the salary thing. I certainly didn't compare him to them. Do you carry a chip on your shoulder about him?

@Etienne

Being a working actor for decades certainly can be considered a success over all the struggling actors who can't seem to manage to land a role. Other than that, there are different levels of success within the industry itself. It's very unlikely that they will be able to top their individual success in TBBT after the show ends.

No but apparently you do, producing is not just for failed actors and pursuing your passion is not failure. You have avoided saying it outright but you have made your feelings clear when you said the show folds without Jim then denigrated the other two main actors

I'm sure everyone will be fine after the show ends. About Jim, he seemed annoyed at Paley. So during the last contracts negotiations he asked for more than Kaley and Johnny? Maybe that's why he's annoyed :D He wanted more than them. "Jokes" aside, he seems to take acting very seriously. And I think theatre is his first and biggest love so probably he will focus on that but who knows.

Jim plays Sheldon to perfection of that there is no doubt, maybe he to believes Sheldon is the star of the show.. But he dosent have the track record of the others and risks being type cast after 11 years in the role.

Also if he again asks for more and this time gets it J&K would be totally justified in walking, the sad thing is I believe the show would go on since TPTB seem to think Sheldon is the key to the atm

I seriously doubt that he wants to go after season 11. Kaley seems the more enthusiast of the big 3 bunch. She always says she would do 20 seasons but she's not the only one to decide so she can't.

yes but maybe he just wants to do something different. He seems to take acting very seriously, he's a theatre geek, so, for an actor like I think he is, play the same part for so long could be a little depressing after a while.
