I think that even as a virgin you would recognize bad sex.

Experience doesn't equal good sex. And likewise inexperience doesn't equal bad sex. Simple as that.

Is there such a thing as 'good' or 'bad' in bed? People's sexual appetites and preferences vary so widely. I completely buy that the more you do it, the more you learn what pleases you, and the better you learn to watch for nonverbal cues from your partner(s) as to what pleases THEM. So in that sense, experience helps. But sex isn't mechanical. Didn't Germaine Greer once say that 'nothing in the world will replace genuine excitement'? Whatever Penny says to kid Leonard, she obviously fancies him and he her, and they love each other and surely care about each other's pleasure. No mechanical technique replaces that. Similarly, Sheldon and Amy love each other and fancy each other and have a strong incentive to give the other pleasure. Will they get better at reading each other and themselves the more they have sex? Sure. Does that mean they didn't have fun? Well, Sheldon compared his experience to watching the long-awaited premiere of one of his pop-culture loves (I.e. An awaited event), and Amy's hair and smiles suggests she had a good time. Not too shabby, all round.

I think with Amy dreaming of sex with Sheldon for so long and Sheldon not knowing how it feels till then, it will probably will be a fascinating experience for both of them, when they are done.

From that kiss to Sheldon telling Amy "I love you"-about a year

 

 

From that to coitus-about a year

 

It does not seem too fast to me, and getting back together after a break up does not equal things remaining in the same pace/position that they were prior to the break up. Actually, it should mean the opposite, especially if that pace caused the break up.

 

And the balance doesn't have to "shift completely", since Sheldon has more dominating personality.

 

I don't understand the cherry picking going on, Unless some people want to diminish this event to make "something" come off as better in comparison.

It just could be that there are some people (me! me!) who don't think this is quite the earth shattering event that others do.  And realistically(yes I know this isn't real)the first time people having sex especially as virgins isn't always the most earth shattering thing on the face of the planet.  But it will be whatever the writers want it to be.  I just truly wish we could move on as fast as Lenny's wedding...

Leonard opens the door to 4B, looking sleepy and now, grumpy. He sees an anxious Sheldon standing in the hallway, wearing his 'Thursday night' flannel pajamas and matching robe.

'Leonard! Amy Farrah Fowler is in my bed!'

'Yeah? And …?'

'I can't find the 'man in the boat'. 

'What?!' 

'I can't find the 'man in the boat'. Now that Amy Farrah Fowler and I have advanced our relationship into a sexual one, I've done my research on how to sexually satisfy a woman and, from my readings, it seems that orgasmic satisfaction stems from the appropriate clitoral stimulation. And, from those same readings, I'm told it looks like, and I'm quoting here, 'a man in a boat'. I've looked everywhere and I can't seem to distinguish it from … one thing … or the other.' 

'Oh. My. God!'

'Now, judging by the fact that on several occasions during your trists with Penny that my noise canceling headphones were appallingly ineffective, the time the two of you broke her bed and then later her dining room table, and what I witnessed myself on the AquaMan recordings, you are well practiced due to your prolific sexual activity. It's rather like searching for The Arc of the Covenant. You know where it is. So tell me.' 

'Sheldon. I am not helping you find Amy's 'man in the boat'. You're both new at this. It takes time to learn and discover things about one another and what you both want and like. And I'm sure Amy will be more than happy to guide you. Where does she think you are anyway?'

'I told her I had to void my bladder.'

'Well, get back in there Indiana Jones. The learning and discovery are part of the fun.'

'Learning and discovery are part of the fun,' Sheldon mocks as he turns and walks back to 4A. 'Said no teacher to a student. Ever.'

Leonard closes the door to 4B and turns, only to find Penny standing there and smiling in a flouncy teddy and a sailor's cap. 'I understand you're a rather skilled hand at finding the 'man in the boat'.'

'Why, yes, ma'am. I am.'

Penny takes Leonard hand and leads him to the bedroom. 'Well, there's one you have find right now.'

'Aye, aye Captain,' Leonard says as they walk into the bedroom and close the door.

I don't think that Sheldon is a saint, but I also don't think that the writers screw every character over for the sake of Sheldon appearing better.

I was not talking about it being good or bad. In the case of Penny she was conflicted about the relationship.

In the case of Sheldon he has been all over the place this season. He hates change. It seems to be fair to think he will be conflicted. He gets that way like in season 7...

• Sheldon: Oh, no, they found the element. (More applause) No, no, stop it. I don’t need to take this admiration from the likes of you people. How do I make them stop loving me?

but then ...

• Leonard: Well, you’re welcome. Sheldon: You robbed me of my greatest achievement.

I wasn't upset, but I also wasn't waiting around HOPING Penny would make fun of Leonard's prowess.  I just don't think that the point of Sheldon and Amy getting together is going to be to make fun of Sheldon's prowess.  The point of their tryst is that they've finally done it, finally taken that step.  Their path to that moment is far different from Leonard and Penny's path, and Penny is quite different from Amy.
