[Spoilers] Discussion Topic: Season 9

Recommended Posts

I think the CBS monkeys know what works in promos.  As Mayim said, the info had already leaked all over the Internet from audience members who attended the two tapings, so tptb wanted to get ahead of it for the general public.  And since it's a pretty monumental event, given who Sheldon is, they figure that viewers will want to tune in to see how it will unfold.

This isn't their first time around the block.

You can't prove that is because of The Shamy Scenes. They hyped the Lenny wedding, or over here they hyped the Leonard carrot scene. But I cannot say the ratings were high because of those scenes. The show gets high ratings every week.

IMO the "Call me maybe" flashmob was better. Sure, this one is good too and gold just because Jim dancing is hilarious, but I don't like the song.

You don't like "uptown Funk"? I love it! I loved it when Jim , Kunal and are the only ones dancing as well.

Miss91 was talking about 8.17. I don't think the wedding was being promoted at that time.

Miss91 insinuated that 8.17 was such a highly viewed episode because of the promos.  Skull just pointed out that we really can't show a direct correlation between ratings numbers and promotion.  He then pointed out the wedding this year was heavily promoted in NZ, and the ratings have been pretty much the same (although without the actual numbers, I can't verify that).    This year, the highest rated episode, outside of the premiere, was 9.06, The Helium Insufficiency, which aired before the premiere of Supergirl.  Which has nothing to do with how TBBT was promoted and mostly due to it being the premiere for Supergirl.

that wasn't my point, i dont think it was only bc of shamy but previous posters were talking that releasing all these shamy scenes maybe could be a bad move in the ratings aspect, so i  just gave this example.

There was also a snow storm on the east coast the day of that episode.(March  5)  NY, Boston, DC areas  were affected. Supposedly 92 million people in all. It's safe to say many of those people were watching TV that night

Shamy sex is monumental. getting back together after 9 episodes is not. Tapings have been leaked as long as I have been on this forum. As tensor pointed out in an earlier post ratings are down 15 percent for the show. I'm guessing the CBS monkeys may be in a bit of a panic mode over that. I'm not sure staying ahead of the general public is the real reason for these tell all promos.

As an example of what?  That releasing the promos caused the ratings to be high?    All you mentioned was the high ratings and the release of all the scenes.  I'm not sure what else to take from your post that Skull answered.

Well Tensor also pointed out that broadcast viewing is down 13% overall (assuming I understood correctly). I'd add that the series is in the 9th season. I'd think they are still pleased because CBS does not have a better replacement. Not yet. That is the thing to panic about.

A rerun of BBT beat a new Empire in Demo, they are fine. BBT is entering veteran territory. It ain't S3, its not a cute, fresh comedy anymore. It's reliable. My point considering the shows high ratings, I don't think you can determine a show got high ratings for particular episode because of the content in the promos. S6 I think averaged 20 million? Tensor prob well correct me on that :D. That was consistent, regardless of the the content in the promos. On another topic I hope the show can move forward from this relationship vortex they seem to be stuck in atm.

Yes, I'm hoping they have exhausted what they want to do with that for a while. I'm afraid it will just move move to a different relationship.  Sill I think Jane Kaczmarek in an upcoming episode is promising.

I took the 13 percent the same way. But I think much of the lower ratings has to do with storylines than an overall trend. Lenny and Shamy have not been written well for both the fan and the network. Lenny's wedding had November sweeps written all over it. It could of been a huge event with guest stars and the CBS monkeys dream promos for this. Instead you got a quickie wedding and a needless North Sea storyline. The Shamy story fared better but Wasn't ideal. getting them back together was fine. The Dave storyline wasn't/ isn't my cup of tea but I can see people liking it. to me what was a waste was Shamy sex in the very next episode. That had February sweeps written all over. Now with Shamy sex and Lenny being married now what for the second half of the season?  The big move? Rajily? Howdette marriage counseling? Tenure? A further Shelnard corroboration?

That's actually a good question! Anyway, after a season in which basically nothing happened, I'm happy to have already had some big events in the first half Season 9. I have the feeling this year TPTB are really trying to keep things moving, there's always something "new" in each episode, whether it is a development in some horizontal plot or a guess star appearance. Maybe in the ninth season you can rely just on "old" good stuff, to keep the general audience watching it may be no long enough to have four nerds going to the Comic Book Store,  or maybe it can have something to do with possible negotiations for further seasons, who knows? Anyway, story wise, apart the ones you mentioned (in particular we were promised that Rajily would be addressed at this season), there are some other  "big" events that may happen, like a change in the living arrangements (for Lenny and Shamy, but also for Howardette, I imagine at some point we will see a completely redecorated Wolowitz's house), Shamy's engagement (that for me can't be dragged out to the next season since the ring is already out there),  Leonard's mother may come to visit her son and daughter in law (we haven't yet got anything about Leonard's family reaction to the wedding)...

Just mention the word Sex and you have the attention of every guy, so it could work.
But they could have teased a bit more I think to draw in even more ppl.

Well they leaked the 'Coitus' spoiler on the 17th of November and the next episode that aired (9x09 The Platonic Permutation) on the 19th of November got the highest viewer ratings so far this season so you could be right that sex simply sells!

Ok that makes more sense :)

The last episode had a 3.8 Live + SD rating.  There have been five other episodes this year that were higher.    It had 15.91 million viewers for Live + SD, with four episodes higher.    Overall, the show is down 15% from last year, which is just slightly more than the overall broadcast decline at 13%.

Down 15% on the entire season or on the first 9 episodes aired this year compared to the first 9 episodes last season?

I think what miss was trying to say was that releasing too much on the promo didn't actually cause the numbers to fall so releasing too much now might not be a bad move at all. I don't think the op meant that the numbers where high because of Shamy scenes on the promo but despite of major episode scenes on the promo. I could be wrong maybe the op could clarify?

Acording to the numbers you posted in the ratings thread 9x06 got Live +7 = 20,866 and 9x09 got Live + 7 = 21,234

Wouldn't that make 9x09 the highest rated this season as was reported online yesterday? :icon_neutral: I'm very confused by all the numbers being posted

I think Tensor was not considering the Live + 7, but just the audience of day each episode actually airs. I'm no expert (I just like numbers, so I like the ratings subject) but I remember Tensor once said (correct me if I'm wrong...) they are the ratings which are looked at most for selling commercials slots, so they are more important, in some sense.

Anyway, as far as the way of advertising an episode, I really think the people in charge of that at TBBT (as well as in every show) know their job, so if they decided to spoil almost everything, they for sure thought  this is the right way to get higher ratings (than the ones they would have normally achieved without advertising the plot) for both episodes, so I bet they will be right on that!

That makes sense.

An aside from specific TBBT ratings ... Is this still how advertisers decide where to buy? Maybe it's the age group that I'm in but the majority of my friends watch things online or on the TV on demand services. I'm interested in how that changes things for TV show funding.

Wow, I live on the east coast and that was my son's birthday and I don't remember that. Do you have an eidetic memory like Sheldon, or did you look that up so you could prove that an episode didn't get high ratings because it was Shamy promoted?  Snow doesn't really keep people in on the east coast, we are very used to it.  It actually couldn't have been that bad, because school wasn't even cancelled.(I did go back and check)

Chrismo missed it by this much.  It wasn't as bad in the northeast as much as a lot of the rest of the country(Lexington KY, set a two day record for amount of snow.). It was a multi day storm known as  Winter Storm Thor.  TV viewing, across the board, was up over multiple days.  So his point stands.

I could care less about his point.  I don't watch the show for a specific couple or character.  I love the whole thing.  All I care about is that the ratings stay up, so it continues.  I just find it funny that he is so desperate to prove that Shamy didn't create the high ratings, that he is checking weather reports.  Unless he does have an eidetic memory.

Then you should find it equally funny that the poster pointed out the promos to begin with. Desperate?

I don't really think the casual viewer really cares about what is coming up next in the show, they just watch the show because it is quirky and funny.  They like the shows theme and they like the characters and how those characters interact.  It is people like us that actually get crazy over what happens next.

Individual rates are based primarily on what's known as the C3.  This is basically the Live + 3, of those who actually watch the ads( or, I should say those who don't fast forward through them).  It's been noted that the C3 rating track pretty close to the Live + SD, so watching what happens with the Live + SD gives an idea of what is happening with the C3.  This is in flux, as networks are pushing to use Live + 7 data.

When I say viewing is down or up, it's usually based on comparisons  to the shows final averages from the previous season.  Total viewing is down, based on comparing current viewing, with the end of last season.  Total broadcast viewing is down 13%.   The show is down 15%.  So the show is down slightly from last year, compared to total viewers.   Modern Family is down 20% compared to itself last year, so it's down 5% compared to the total viewer drop off.  Empire, is down 1% compared to itself, so compared to total viewing, it's actually up 12%, as its fallen less than the number of users.  For an explanation of terms, see the first few post in the ratings thread.

Excuse the interruption to your argument but @miss91 was answering my question about 'giving the plot away' of an episode
