Einstein Von Brainstorm Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 The Big Bang Theory in it's Ninth Season... Has set a record + 7 viewing figure. At the People's choice awards they won Favourite TV show (winning over both Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead!), Favorite network TV comedy and Jim won Favorite comedic TV actor. Mayim Bialik won the Critic's Choice award. The Cast is nominated for 'Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series' and Jim for 'Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series' at this year's SAG awards. And CBS want the show to go beyond its contracted 10 seasons! To summarise: People are still watching. The cast/show is still being nominated & winning awards voted for by both the Public and the Critics. The direction of the show, whether you see it as 'The Sheldon Show' or not, is working and the show is doing just fine! Go Team Big Bang! wowbagger Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 The discussion about politics on the thread reminded me of a random moment from an earlier season of the show: Penny wearing a Hillary Clinton t-shirt. It wasn't commented on and it never showed up again, but it struck me as interesting in a show that (sensibly) steers clear of politics. And it got me wondering what sorts of governance systems the gang would espouse: a ) Sheldon (and possibly Amy) would probably be a fan of a Greek-style Republic, but instead of recruitment by birth government would only be undertaken by an intellectual elite; b ) Raj would be all about the plutocracy- just throw money and entertainments at the masses!; c ) Bernie would have vast sympathy for a military dictatorship, I suspect, with a well-funded and dubiously-ethical experimental chemistry and biology laboratory (possibly courtesy Overlord Farrah Fowler); d ) Leonard would be a hand-wringing liberal who is perennially disappointed by the proletariat (I hear you, Leonard); e ) Howard would probably be an anarchist at heart, snarling at the government and shitting bricks at the demand to suggest an alternative himself; and f) Penny would be the ultimate pragmatist, getting on with any government., but nursing a secret soft spot for the bullied and the underdog, a soft spot with a bad habit of rearing up at highly inconvenient moments. Think Rick Blaine in Casablanca (and now I'm imagining Penny saying to Leonard 'The problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world'. I'm also imagining Leonard saying to Stuart 'Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By'.) Holy shit, that Riesling I drank last night is more potent than I'd thought! backing away now.... Far as im concerned Sheldon deserved to be hurt, then some. Dont feel sorry for him at all, he had it coming. For years he has treated his loved ones like shit. I have no idea why they put up with him. "Five years" is incorrect and Sheldon hasn't treated Amy like shit anyway (nor others, but that is a different story). They weren't even a couple until later in season five and didn't have constant or serious relationship problems until about season six. Most of their problems were about Amy wanting to get "physical" with him, but that hasn't been a part of their relationship originally and Sheldon had a right not to engage in such a thing if he wasn't ready. Engaging in it against his desires would have made it terrible for both of them and relationship is about compromises from BOTH sides. Sheldon could be dismissive about her interests at times or biology in general, but she would show little to no interest in his "geek stuff" either, and he would watch the movies she enjoyed with her too. Sheldon used the Relationship Agreement to "monitor" their relationship, but Amy was introduced to it from the beginning, wasn't forced to sign it, and would constantly challenge it or even manipulate with it in her advantage ("The Fish Guts Displacement). Sheldon has participated in gift giving traditions and celebrations for Amy's sake, despite disliking such things. You seem to have a very narrow minded POV about Shamy, no offense. Tripper Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 A few housekeeping matters: First, political avatars are okay, provided they meet the same criteria as other avatars (ie. no nudity, violence, bad language, etc). Remember, an avatar can't be hidden by people, they will show to everyone regardless of preference, so it's important to strike a balance that it won't offend sections of the forum (offend, not cause disagreement). Although there are parts of the forum where the discussion can lead towards more mature themes or stronger language, it's not the case throughout the forum. All that said, this thread isn't the place for any political discussion, chit chat is. Second, please remember not to discuss other ships disparagingly or talk negatively about other shippers as though they are part of one homogeneous blob. 2L344 Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 (edited) For me, the show was light fun the first several seasons ( as a sitcom should be). Sheldon's blunt, cold, and inappropriate behavior was deliciously funny and was a source of guilty pleasure for me as a I howled at his remarks. He said what he wanted, and acted however he felt, and that was okay by me since it was funny. Howard and his constant search for an easy lay, and his barrage of droll comments, were pretty damned funny too. All of his loud exchanges with his Ma were to me hilarious, and just as inappropriate as Sheldon's behavior could get. Penny was (and still is) easy on the eyes, and as the "non-nerd" we could see the guys through her eyes as what they were to the "normal" folks out there. She got her laughs from playing off the goofiness of the guys. Leonard was kind of the somewhat "normal nerd", someone who could be as dorky as Sheldon but without that anti-social side of him. His quest to win Penny over was entirely relatable, funny, and had me rooting for that lovable underdog. Those first three or so seasons were a lot more simpler. Things got deeper for me once the show introduced Amy and Bernie to the show. The change was subtle at first, as the writers fleshed out the characters and tried to figure out what direction to go with the relationships. But soon enough everyone (with maybe the exception of Raj, who is STILL out there making a mess of things) was involved in serious relationships. Leonard got the "hot chick" but that wedding though, ugh...Howard got married (how does THAT happen lol?), and Sheldon has a gf in Amy who is now a sexual partner (again, THAT happened!). Amy won me over fast as the quirky and Sheldon-like gal who somehow "got" Sheldon and found his quirkiness "adorable". They were a fun duo who enjoyed doing things together and, in Amy, Sheldon found a companion who accepted him for all his inappropriateness. With Sheldon, I never really analyzed him that much those first several seasons. Why would I? He was a guy the other characters cared enough to call friend and despite douche bag behavior, consistently hung out with him whether for meals, going to the comic store, playing games, etc. It wasn't until his fascinating relationship with Amy did I start to get a little uncomfortable with his behavior. This was a gal who idolized him and developed an attraction for him, and once the relationship started turning romantic he would treat her like a pet dog sometimes. I'm not second guessing the writers and their grand scheme, or how his behavior was continuing Sheldon's "normality"---just saying I started to feel a bit uncomfortable with it. I think the show is at its best when the ensemble is featured together doing things, not that I don't enjoy the individual plots too whether it's something featuring Lenny or Shamy. For me, there's a part of me that relates to most every character on the show in some way. They can all make me laugh. 9 years of developing these characters naturally would have them "grow up" and change a bit. And with that, we get more "grown up" themes and some "soap opera" moments. They can be sweet and tear jerky scenes, and they can be thought provoking as we get a glimpse of a character's psyche. And we as fans gobble it up. For me, season 9 has been a tough one to enjoy considering the first NINE episodes centered around a nasty break up. Let's throw in a cheap wedding that took a back seat to it (cmon, it is THE wedding, the one folks that watched from day 1 hoped for someday-- bad form writers)...Even if you're not a Shamy fan, it's tough because the other characters took more of a supporting role as the writers took us on that break up ride. I'm hoping that now that we've resolved the break up, and Sheldon development is well in hand, we can start seeing lighter stories that include everyone again. Stories that play out just for laughs, no hidden drama. As not only a fan of Shamy and (lightweight) Lenny , but as a fan of the SHOW, I hope there is more emphasis on the group and less on individual plots. Speaking for just me of course... Then you throw Barry in for good measure and all in a 19 minutes. I know it can't happen but IMO an episode can be funny and good if any of the characters aren't on. Watching some of the soul crushing moments were hard from a character standpoint, but as fans of Jim and Mayim's work they were absolutely a feast for the eyes. Ya just can't turn away... When I watch old seasons it's easy to see that the way I enjoy the show is different now. It's become more serious to be sure, but it's still funny to me but maybe in a more grown up way.
