I don't think so.

According to Wikipedia, Mayim was born, raised, and lives in California.

Her accent, when she talks, isn't hugely different from Amy's, so I'm guessing Amy is also from, or near to, California

That's where she lives, but is that were she was born and raised?

Given Mayim was born, raised, and lives in California (she was born and lives in San Diego), I'm going to guess, Amy also comes from somewhere around the same area.

She was raised in California, but both of her parents are from New York. She has said herself that she has a bit of an accent.

This reminds me of a time shortly after I graduated.  My salary was pretty modest and I bought a car and purchased a condo.  With the car payments and mortgage payments I remember thinking...I am so broke.

Then I met up with a friend for lunch and she wasn't sure if she had more than $10 in her account and didn't want to get hit with a fee for going into overdraft.

At that point I thought....wow I am sooooo not broke!

IME, it's where you are raised, which gives you your accent.

My father was born, and lived until his early 20s, in the North East of England, but my accent is entirely Lancastrian, with not a hint of Geordie.

To quote Leoanrd:  "I have no money."  Sounds like he's strapped for cash.

Which episode and what context was that in?

why try to give the money back to Penny, after she presented him with the money from the sale of the car?

He was being generous?

The Big Bang Theory's Kunal Nayyar Reveals the Advice Friends' Matt LeBlanc Gave Him

It's a good day: We have a full month of brand new Big Bang Theory episodes ahead and answers to our most burning questions: What kind of conference kept Amy away so long? What's ahead for Raj and Emily? And, on a totally separate note, why wasn't Mayim Bialik, Melissa Rauch, and Kunal Nayyar part of that epic Friends/Big Bang Theory photo at director Jimmy Burrows' recent celebration?

At the SAG Awards this weekend, we caught up with Bialik and Nayyar to find out exactly what's been going on.

Yeah it's usually where you're raised. Maybe she spent time on the East Coast. Coming from someone who lives here, her accent does not sound like West coast. Kaley seems to have more of a California accent than Mayim.

It's a good day: We have a full month of brand new Big Bang Theory episodes ahead and answers to our most burning questions: What kind of conference kept Amy away so long? And, on a totally separate note, why wasn't Mayim Bialik, Melissa Rauch, and Kunal Nayyar part of that epic Friends/Big Bang Theory photo at director Jimmy Burrows' recent celebration?

That part may contain kind of a spoiler:

What's Next for Emily and Raj: The last episode of Big Bang revealed some cracks in Raj and Emily's relationship. Although it remains to be seen if the pair belongs together, their argument in front of Sheldon was one of the most honest any couple has had on the show. Still, more trouble lies ahead, reveals Nayyar. "The trouble doesn't go away right away," he says. "There may be some other people in the mix that [Raj] has his eye on. But they're definitely going to try and work through it." Sure enough, in this week's episode, Raj will meet a new girl at the comic book store who will make him question his relationship with Emily.

In the VD episode Emily was done with Raj, now Kunal seems to say that they are trying again, maybe it is related with the episode they are taping right now...

That caught my eye as well. Looking forward to the next TR then to see how that'll work out. Will they actually work through this and get back together? Will they try work through this but still decide they're not meant for each other? Will Raj grow up a little?? (fingers crossed for the last one!)

Being raised in a household with people speaking in a certain accent can have an effect.  Her NY accent isn't very strong at all.  You can hear it in certain words.  She seems to have a mix of both.   I've mostly lived in the South,  while both my parents were born and raised in the Midwest.   I have a mixture of both accents.

Emily deserves way more than the 1 minute scenes she got in the VD episode. I mean, even if I don't like the character very much and for me it wouldn't be that bad if they break up for good,  I think the two of them need to have at some point a proper conversation about their issues and about how Raj has been deceiving his doubts about the relationship for almost an year. Maybe this will help him to grow a little and to have the courage to express his feelings and his needs without the fear of being alone if he does. From there, they can decide what's better for them as a couple.

I'd like that! They better made Laura a regular for a reason cause what she got since her promotion was a waste. Even if they're not ending up together I'd love to have her back for at least one episode in which Emily and Raj can talk things out honestly.

Not necessarily true.  I'm the exact opposite of Nickelette.  My parents were both born and raised in a southern state and have strong southern accents.  I was born and raised in a Midwest state and have a Midwest accent with a touch (especially certain words) of a southern accent.  When I was little, the southern accent was much stronger and I got teased a lot when I started school.  People say it's still there if you listen closely and when I'm mad, it really comes out.

So delighted to be discussing the cast members' accents as I have always been intrigued by how Jim pronounces  the "ing" on ends of words. I would think that being a Texan he would say this as in' but I find that he has a very non-Texan way of saying "ing" which is more like "ingk." Has anyone else noticed this?

Most actors, especially those like Jim that get an MFA speak standard American.  Even those who don't get theatre degrees, if they spend any length of time acting, learn to move their speech to SA, unless the role calls for an accent. My normal accent was an obvious Wisconsin accent.  The more theatre I did, the more it disappeared, especially with directors harping on it.  Think of SA as an accent actors learn. Much like I learned a British Accent for a role.

I sort of come down in favour of Penny remaining as a pharma sales rep (at least in her day job) because I didn't really get the sense that she disliked the job, just that her dream was to be an actor and dreams don't die easily. I like nibbler's marketing for entertainment idea, and it would be an organic source for guest stars if penny were to be some sort of entertainment industry bigshot, with the melancholy reflection that the success she has found is behind the camera. And let us all applaud kaley cuoco, who despite having been a successful working actor from an early age herself, tapped so beautifully into the hopeful hopelessness of aspiring actors.

I also think it would be an interesting source of conflict between Penny and Leonard. I think Leonard sort of gets how important acting is to Penny, but because he has so many passions that he can pursue, he may not fully get the extent of Penny's yearning. And of course, he associates acting for Penny with the endless round of auditions and disappointment, so you can't really blame him for thinking of it as good riddance.

but instead of whatever contrived bullshit the show came up with in the shrink episode, I would love it if penny and Leonard had a proper argument about the acting thing.

Leonard: It's not just you anymore! It's our money and our stability!

Penny: Well, YOU quit your dream job then and join the industry!

Leonard: I get you're upset, but why make both of us miserable?

Penny: You don't get it! You got to follow your passions! All of them! I basically had acting and you!

Leonard: You've still got me!

penny: Until you kiss some other smart pretty girl you see every day!

and so forth. Now I believe that Lenny would resolve it satisfyingly, but there are so many interesting rich stories to tell here, show.

I'm not sure that Penny does want to be an actress.  I get the impression that what she actually truly wants is to be a star.  I didn't see that need in her performances, but her need for the personal recognition and status she thinks fame would afford is glaringly obvious.

For example, when she was in Streetcar, I saw Penny playing Blanche DuBois (and this is not a smirch on Kaley's skill because I absolutely didn't see Kaley playing Penny playing Blanche, I'm pretty sure I saw the performance that Kaley was directed to give us). I saw 'Penny' delivering lines with the correct intonation and emotion , but Blanche wasn't there.  Blanche is a woman in hiding, and the most important aspect is that she's also hiding from herself and, in the shocking denouement of her violent rape and the revelation that she was a sexual abuser of the young boys under her tutelage, her delusion finally takes her, becomes a form of self-preservation and comfort as she's taken away to the psychiatric ward.  Did anyone catch even an inkling of this from the performance we were shown?

I just don't see that total absorption in Penny.  She's always there.  Always aware and present. To echo Beverley, her locus is external and she is deeply insecure.  She has her looks, she knows that, but looks fade and she's now waking up to that reality.  Leonard doesn't think he deserves to get the 'hot girl' and the 'hot girl' wonders what will happen when her looks are gone and all that's left is what's inside, which in her mind don't add up to very much at all.

Because it's not very strong at all.   I often get asked where I'm from because to Southerners I don't have a southern accent.  But when I visit the Midwest, I get teased about my Southern accent.

My accent only really gets picked up on when obviously I'm not here in NY because...well majority of people sound like me lol. I do know its strong as in College I took a course (yes local colleges on LI have courses in how to "loose" the NY style of speaking aka "business language"...sadly didn't work)  but my husband (originally from the Boston area but has lived on Long Island for over 25 years) still has some Boston phrases and likes to rag on certain words I "enhance" to be nice...lol...

awww...the many different accents....its it is pretty crazy.
