[Spoilers] Discussion Topic: Season 9

I just find the whole idea that POOR Leonard has been subconsciously sabotaging his wedding such nonsense out of a teen fanfic. And don't get me started on Penny sharing part of that blame. Yes, Leonard has always been insecure and Penny has always had doubts about whether she was smart enough for him or whether they had anything in common. That was believable, interesting and poignant. But to say that cheating and then hiding it from her for two years is poor Leonard being insecure and sabotaging his wedding is a ridiculously cheap way to swipe a huge problem under the carpet. Leonard had gone to Penny herself in S5 about wanting to be a cheater and not being able to bring himself to do it. He went with it and then felt so guilty he confessed right away. And yet now I am meant to buy he would be able to keep it a secret from the love of his life for two years? Because he's insecure? Look, I can even buy a drunk Leonard being flattered by some girl's attention on a trip and ending up not knowing how to respond to her kissing him and going along with it for a bit. But what I can't buy is this pop-psychology explanation that the reason he did it and he kept it from Penny for years is that he's subconsciously trying to sabotage his own relationship out of his insecurities. 

to be fair hes been trying to subconciouley sabotaging his relationship with Penny since day one. Mentioning their parents in.bed, saying i love you in.bed, proposing in bed etc. Not saying he was insecure justifies sweeping cheating under the carpet. But writers have done this before.

Wait they had a girls night out?  Was it a flashback or something?  And if it was a flashback, that mean Penny already knew when Leonard finally confessed and that was why she was forgiving?

I'm with you on this one, Koops. It's also quite weird they put so much effort into this storyline by hiring Melissa Tang. From what I gather she didn't play that big a role in Lenny's reconciliation. Not that I complain though. Still strange.

Hello. How is it hanging? Are you perhaps enjoying the success of some local sports team?

I don't really have much to say about this episode that hasn't been eloquently expressed by koops. However, I'll be internet-deprived for the rest of the month, so one hurrah for the road, as it were:

 

a ) Hee to NoGav about the Un Chien Andalou reference! Leonard, you are one sick little homunculus.

b ) While we are on the subject of Sheldon and Penny: Hey, show, if you wanted to pander transparently, why didn't you say so before? Look, here's a dollar. You know that thing about Penny and Amy standing one of top of another inside a giant trenchcoat? I want that to happen. A while back in the ShAmy thread, I mused that the ShAmy breakup might mean that Sheldon would fuck Benedict Cumberbatch. I want that to happen too. I guarantee you tumblr will love it. You can have- I don't know- Amy dream it. You know she has some highly specific fantasies running around in there. And while you and dream!Sheldon are just giving it away, I want him to boff Nathan Fillion too. The hammer is Nathan's penis, after all. Now, come on, show and dream!Sheldon. Put on some lipstick and put some effort into it! Jeez, what are we paying you for?!?

c ) We're getting so much insight into Leonard's brain today! He dreams spicy dreams about his roommate and his wife. He is so tormented by being in a relationship with the girl of his dreams that he participates in a kiss with another woman, sits on the knowledge for two years and then blurts it out on the way to his wedding. My my, Leonard's subconscious. What a day you are having. Look, in all seriousness, there are elements of this that I get. Leonard has historically behaved like he thinks he's an impostor in his relationship with Penny. He expresses disapproval of her behaviour in one arena and then promptly turns around and says 'Please don't leave me.' She is with you and has explicitly told you the things about you that she loves. Take yes for an answer, dude. But there is something off about this two-year silence followed by an incomplete confession and then this mumbled epiphany. With some care, this could have been interesting. But it feels like the writers recklessly threw in the psychodrama, looked at the result, said 'oh. Right. We don't have the stomach for this.' And promptly threw pop-psych. over it and said 'Now let us pretend that never happened.'

d ) Sheldon's behaving like a jackhole! Brilliant, writers. This retroactively makes Amy's freak-out in the S8 finale completely understandable and a masterpiece of psychological acuity and subtlety. Except for neither of those things.

The problem for me is, I don't see any sign of them going in the right direction, if anything the situation is much, much worse now.

When I clean out my closet I first have to take stuff out of it, which looks like a bigger mess, before I can put it back together better than before.  Seeing the mess looks like I'm making it worse, but I'm actually making progress.

Speaking of how Sheldon tells it - do I read it right that Sheldon lies to Amy's face to hurt her by saying he slept with Penny. That's a really vicious way to get back at Amy. It uses what Sheldon calls Penny's promiscuity to prey on Amy's insecurities by saying he slept with his best friend's newly married bride, essentially calling Leonard a cuckold, Penny a Slut and all their friendships a lie. So much for Sheldon's warm feelings for his sister/mother, best friend and SO. He'd sell them all down the line just to take a pot shot at Amy? I hope I read that wrong cos it IS wrong on so many levels and not how I see Sheldon. Another OOC nightmare? Or, if IC, a new low for how Sheldon is written?

No, as far as I understand Sheldon had a bra in the box because he wanted to lead Amy to think that he had "girls on the side" and make her jealous. But she notices it's Penny's almost immediately. As in "Not buying it, you took this from Penny". Not as in "OMC you slept with Penny". I might be wrong though.

They could be doing that as well.  She may have called him out on it, but it's going to be in the back of her mind that he tried to use her to make her jealous and although it's not Penny's fault, Amy is bound to look at her in a slightly different light now.

Ok, no, guys. I honestly don't think this is hammering any wedges between Amy and Penny or making Amy insecure of Penny. Again, it would be very helpful if someone from the taping would clarify, but even in my current rage I do not get the impression Sheldon wanted her to believe he slept *with Penny* and that Amy bought it and might now get angry/upset/insecure around Penny.

As far as I understand, Sheldon wanted to make Amy jealous by leading her to believe he can get any girls he wants and put a bra in that box to make it look like he accidentally thought it was hers but actually it was another girls' and "oopsie, my bad!". He just happened to use Penny's because that's the only bras he has easy access to! And I *think* that Amy wasn't buying it and read right through his idiocy and pointed out the bra is Penny's as in "You idiot, I know that's Penny's bra. Like I'm going to buy you're sleeping around."

Gathering from the details we got, Sheldon seems to be a real jerk. But I think that's just his way of coping with this conglomeration of feelings he's experiencing right now. Sheldon's never learned to deal with heartbreak and behaves in a childish manner. Amy should know him well enough to not take this personally. And Sheldon will be smart enough to acknowledge his juvenile attempts will get him nowhere. Things are a changing...
