Tensor
Week 01; Week of 21 September, 2015 Ratings Explanations and Terms. 18 September, 2015To begin the season, I'll explain how the Nielsen company gets the data, and what some of the terms mean. The Nielsen company gathers data in several ways, from a couple of different electronic boxes that are attached to the television, set top box, or DVR to the old fashioned diary method. Nielsen still uses the older diary method (where people write in what they are watching) for several reasons. First, to validate their statistical model. Remember, the Nielsen’s are a statistical measure. The diaries can also be compared to the set top boxes (both regular and People Meters). Using this, they can verify that their calculations on the boxes is correct, as the more data you have, the more accurate your results will be. Also, Nielsen uses the diaries to gather further demographic data to assist advertisers in targeting specific ages, genders, incomes, eductions, etc). There are some boxes that just record the channel that is being watched. Again, these are compared to the diaries to validate their statistical model, but are also used to get some quick data. These are also, what are called “People Meters”. Homes that have People Meters, have individuals enter their specific ID (which is tied to their age and gender) and these meters track what those people are watching, even if they are just channel surfing. In the case of DVRs, it measures what has been recorded and watched up to thirty days after it was on.People with their ID number sign in and out of the people meters, each time they start or stop watching TV. In the case of multiple people watching the same TV, the ID allows the meter to track how many and when people are watching. The meter can track someone who turns the TV on, and if another person signs in, shows two people watching the same program. If the original person leaves by signing out, it will still be tracking what the other person is now watching.Usually, each August, Nielsen estimates the number of households in the US that have televisions to use during the season. The current number of households, from May of 2014, is 116,300,000, with 296 million viewers, age 2 and older. Note, this is not how many households are tracked by Nielsen, but is the estimated total number, so the various breakdowns can be extrapolated, statistically, to the total number of households and viewers, along with the various breakdowns. Here are the various terms I usually use in the ratings articles. Overnights (or Fast Nationals): Are the preliminary ratings based on 56 metropolitan areas and is based on the Live + Same Day ratings. Overnights are based on what was scheduled in a specific time. TBBT starts the season on Monday's, at 8 PM. So, in overnights, it is assumed that a box tuned to CBS at 8 PM on Monday, is watching TBBT. Final Ratings: are the Overnight ratings, including adjustments for various reasons. For example, lets say a Chicago station has a special news bulletin for damage by a tornado in the Chicago area, or what happens a lot in the fall, a local football team is playing, the number of people watching the CBS station in Chicago would be deducted from the overnight ratings. Final ratings also include adjustments made when actual numbers (those are originally estimated based on the metropolitan areas) outside the 56 Metropolitan areas are reported. Also as CBS typically runs TBBT until 8:31. That extra minute can add a one or two tenth increase. Live + Same Day (SD): The number of households (and viewers) that watched a program, including DVR viewing until 3 a.m. locally, the next day. At 3 a.m., the data is automatically sent to Nielsen from the box. The overnights are usually released around 11 to 11:30 AM EST. The finals are usually released around 4-5 PM EST. Live + 3: The number of households (and viewers) that watch a program up to three days after the program airs. Again, there is a 3 a.m. cutoff. The Live + 3 is usually not released, although a network may use a specific show's Live + 3 to promote an unusual increase to promote the show.Live + 7: The number of households (and viewers) that watch a program up to seven days after the program airs. With the 3AM cutoff. Live + 7 comes out on the Monday three weeks after the week the show was broadcast.Currently a rating called C3 is used to set advertising rates. The difference between C3 and Live + 3 is the number of people watching the show, up to three days after the it airs. The C3 is the number of people who watch the the show AND THE COMMERCIALS. It has been shown that the C3 closely tracks the Live + SD (note, not the Live + 3). Even so, Live + 3 are closely held by Nielsen and usually it is only found in a press release by a network, for a specific show, at a specific time.Ratings Point: The percentage of TV households out of all TV households, or percentage of a particular total or demo that are watching a particular program.Ratings Share: The percentage of households (or a particular total or demo), WHO HAVE THEIR TV ON, out of all households (or a particular total or demo) that are watching a particular program.Note that a Ratings point is one percent of the total households with a TV. Ratings Share point is one percent of the total households with a TV ON. For a simplified example, lets say the total number of TVs is 100 and there are 50 of them on. If 10 TVs are tuned to a specific program, the ratings point would be 10 (10 is 10% of 100). The ratings share would be 20 (10 is 20% of 50).Total Viewers: The total number of people watching a particular program. More than one person could be viewing a program in one house, say a family of four.Demo: This is the various breakouts of the Ratings points and shares. Age, gender, education level, race, etc. are all different demos. Most of the publicly available breakouts are based on age. In general, (I say this as I myself, am an exception to these generalizations) those people over 50 watch the most broadcast TV. The demo of 18-49 is, currently, what is used in ratings, as this group watches less than those over 50, so advertisers want to advertise on those show that have more of those viewers. The demo of 18-34 watch the least amount of broadcast TV, so shows that have this demo are really looked at closely by advertisers. Unless otherwise specified, the term demo, when used in these posts, means the 18-49 demo.My next post will be looking at how TBBT did last year, compared to the previous two years. If there are any questions, please feel free to ask and I'll try my best to give you an answer. Tensor Season 8 ratings recap; 21 September, 2015Well, Happy Premiere day.I'm going to do an overall look and a quick comparison between season 8 and season 9 here. I'll be using the Live + Same Day and the Live + 7 ratings. While the "Official Ratings" use the C3, I don't have access to those, except for the end of the year. However, the C3 tracks pretty closely to the Live + Same Day (L + SD). One thing to remember, overall Broadcast Television viewing, in the 18-49 demo, was off by 11% during season. For the definition of any terms, see the previous post.Overall, in L + SD Season 7 averaged 17.69 Million viewers. During season 8, the average was 16.15, a drop, on average of 1.54 million, or 8.72%, which looks better than the 11% for demo. However, TBBT demo during season 7 averaged 5.07 and during season 8 only 4.32, a drop of 0.75 points, or 14.7%. This is the first time TBBT has dropped more than the season average (except for season 4, it's move to Thursday). For the Monday episodes, the average number of viewers were 16.68, while the viewers for the Thursday episodes was 15.97. This is 700,000 viewers less, on Thursday. As far as demo goes, the first six episodes had an average of 4.9 in demo, while the Thursday episodes only had a 4.1. Thursday's demo was eight tenths less than Monday's demo, a 20% drop. For Live + 7 between season 7 and season 8, while viewers and demo were both down (down 1.81 million viewers, .095 in demo), percentage wise, the drop wasn't as bad as the Live + SD (7.81% in viewers and 12.63% in demo. In terms of the Monday vs Thursday split for Live + 7, the Thursday episodes averaged 1.2 million less viewers than the Monday episodes. Demo for Live + 7 on Thursdays was down nine tenths of a demo point. For the first time since season five, TBBT failed to hit 20 million viewers in Live + SD for an episode and for the first time since season four, TBBT was under 14 million for an episode, which happened twice. In addition, TBBT didn't hit a 6.0 demo for the first time since season five and was under a 4.0 demo seven times. The first time it had multiple episodes below four for the first time since season four (it was below 4 once in season 7). As a matter of fact, the last six episodes in season 8 were below a 4.0, and averaged less than a 3.6. Now, before everyone gnashes their teeth and wails, TBBT was still the number one comedy by more than a point over Modern Family in demo. As I mentioned, TBBT averaged a 4.3 demo, while Modern Family had a 3.2. In viewers it seemed even further ahead, as Modern Family didn't even average 10 million viewers. There is another way to look at things. For instance lets look at Friends' final year. Due to its huge final (a 24 demo, yeah, 24. TBBT highest demo was a 6.2) Friends finished the season with an average of 12.4 demo for the year. If you compare this with the average non-repeat show demo across all shows for that year, which was 4.2, and set that average demo at 100, you get a score of 303 for their final year. Look at that broadcast demo average for a second (4.2), and remember, TBBT was the number one comedy with a 4.3 last year. But, if you compare that 4.3 to the average non-repeat show demo last year, which was only a 1.68 demo, you end up with a score of 256 for last year. As a matter of fact, since the 18-49 demo became the standard used to determine ratings champions in the late 90s, out of the top four years for a half hour comedy, first is Friends, with that 303. Second is season 7 of TBBT with a 269, third was season eight of TBBT with a 256, and four was season six of TBBT with a 249. I've got a few other things to point out, which I'll put up later on Monday. Tensor Week 01 Overnights: Households and Top 25 Demo, 22 September, 2015TBBT ran the premiere episode for season 9, 9.01 The Matrimonial Momentum at 8:00 PM and pulled in an 11.6 household rating with an 18 share last night. TBBT was first in households, with that 11.6/18. In second was The Voice with a 8.0/12 and in third was Dancing with the Stars at 7.9/12.That is a bit higher than I thought. Based on last year, this should be around a 5.2 with around 18 millionI don't have the Top 25 markets, as of yet and if/when I get them, I'll add them here. The vewers and demos should be up shortly. Tensor Week 01 Overnight Demo and Viewers 22 September, 2015The new premiere episode 9.01 The Matrimonial Momentum had a 4.5 with 17.63 million viewers, which placed it first in Demo and viewers. This was down a whole demo point and 1.3 Million viewers from last years premiere. For viewers, second was second hour of The Voice with 13.02 Million and third was the second hour of Dancing with the Stars with 11.93 million. In demo, second was The Voice with a 3.5 and in third was the new NBC Show, Blindspot, with a 3.1For the 18-34 demo, TBBT was first with a 2.8, The Voice was second with a 2.3 and Blindspot was third with a 1.9. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT had a 6.3, The Voice was second with a 4.5 and Blindspot was third with a 4.0. We only have partial Top 25 numbers, TBBT currently leads with a 5.1 demo. I was a bit optimistic on the demo, this may be due to the overall drop in viewers for broadcast television. This would make household share worth less than last year, leading to my over estimate. Tensor Week 01 Final Ratings For Monday, September 21, 2015 broadcasts, 22 September, 2015At 8:00 PM, the new episode of TBBT, 9.01, The Matrimonial Momentum, brought in a 4.7 , with 18.20 million people, up two tenths in demo and up (570,000) viewers from the overnights. This was still down eight tenths from last years premiere, but up 170,000 in viewers. In first place, for demo, was TBBT with that 4.7. In second was The Voice at 3.5 , even with the overnights. In third was the new show Blindspot with a 3.1, Even with the overnights. For viewers, TBBT was number one with those 18.20 million viewers. The Voice was second with 12.37 million, down about 800,000 from the overnights. Dancing with the Stars was in third at 11.46 million viewers, down 470,000 from the overnights. The demo a bit higher than I thought, (I said 4.2-4.5) but I'll give myself the 18 million I said as close enough. Overall, while down 15% in demo, it did pull in more viewers than last years premiere. When you consider the rest of the ratings, this is still pretty damn good, especially in it's ninth year. We'll have to see how the rest of the season plays out, but it is, ratings wise, a good start. Tensor Live + 3 Day DVR, 27 September, 2015The three day increases for TBBT, from DVR viewing were an increase of 1.7 demo points, from 4.7 to 6.4(36%). While there was an increase of 4.29 million viewers, from 18.20 million to 22.49 million (24%). We don't normally get the three day lifts, but CBS had one of the biggest three day lifts and so they were bragging. Something I don't normally look at here, the 25-54 demo went from 6.5 to 8.6, an increase of 2.1(32%) Return to Archive Index Edited October 10, 2015 by Tensor
Tensor
Week 2; Week of 28 September, 2015 2015-16 Ad Rates, and Previous Season Comparison 28 September, 2015Everyone in the broadcast TV business is interested ratings. The reason for that is ratings usually tie right in to ad rates. This post will look at just what, exactly, those ratings are mean in terms of ad rates. We will be looking at the ad rates for a 30 second ad on various shows, for the 2015-16 season. I’ll list how the the top ten did for the last three years. I'll look at how the ratings compare to the ad rates to see which shows are the lowest or highest costs per ratings point. I also present the ad rates for this year. Unless otherwise stated, “spot” refers to the average cost of a 30 second ad. First of all, most of the ad rates are set at the “Upfronts” in May, when the networks trot out their new fall schedules. Most of the ads are bought “upfront” (hence the name) while a few are sold closer to when the show airs. Ad Age questions some of the companies buying the ads, and get an estimate on what it will cost to run a spot on each show in the fall. One thing to remember, these are ESTIMATES, of the AVERAGE cost of a spot. For instance, in 2013-14 season, the average price of a spot for American Idol was $356,000. However, during the end of the year, during the champion results show, the price can go much higher (in it’s heyday, it could pull in an spot rate of $1 million or higher). Of course this means that some of it’s other nights are much less. I used American Idol, but any competition show works out in a rather similar manner. For scripted series, the difference is much less. However, reruns command less money, and that is figured into the average. With that in mind, here are the top ten shows, as far as ad rates for the 2014-2015 season (last year) and the ad rates for the same show for the past three seasons along with the increase or decrease for the show between 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons: Show……….……………….....................2014-15................2013-14........…..2012-13…..........2011-12….......….+/-Sunday Night Football..…............$627,000...............$594,000........…$545,000…….....$512,000......….+24,000Thursday Night Football.......... ....$483,000....................*... .......................*..........................*.....................*.....The Big Bang Theory…….............$344,000............$317,000......…..$276,000..............$198,000..........+24,000The Blacklist.............…….............$283,000.............$199,000... ................*..........................*.................+84,000The Voice (Mon)……… ................$274,000.........…$294,000........….$239,000…......…$206,000......….-20,000The Voice(Tue)……….............…..$253,000.............$279,000….........$225,000……….......…*…….........-26,000American Idol(Wed). ......…….......$243,000.............$356,000.........…$342,000……..…$502,000.........-103,000Modern Family…….........…….......$240,000.............$282,000.........…$331,000……..…$206,000......….-42,000New Girl.………….……….............$236,000.............$237,000… ........$321,000….....….$225.000….........-1,000American Idol(Thu).........…….......$225,000..............$289,000….........$296,000……..... $468,000…......-64,000Here is what the Top 10 looked like in: 2013-2014 2012-2013 2011-2012 Sunday Night Football...…$594,000.......Sunday Night Football……$545,000……..........Sunday Night Football.......$512,000American Idol (Wed)….….$356,000.......American Idol (Wed)……..$502,000…..............American Idol (Wed)…..…$502,00The Big Bang Theory….…$317,000.......Modern Family………….…$331,000…..............American Idol (Thur)…....$468,000The Voice…………….……$294,000.......New Girl.………….…….….$321,000……...........The X-Factor…………...…$321,000American Idol (Thur)….….$289,000.......American Idol (Thur)…..….$296,000…...............Glee…….………………….$267,000Modern Family…………....$282,000.......The Simpsons……………..$286,000…...............Family Guy……..…..…….$265,000 The Voice(Tue)………..….$279,000........Family Guy………….……..$277,000…...............The Simpsons……...……$254,000New Girl.………….……….$237,000........The Big Bang Theory……..$276,000…...............Two and a Half Men....…$252,000The Simpsons…………….$232,000........Two Broke Girls……………$234,000..............….Modern Family................ $249,000Scandal……………………$207,000........Two and A Half Men………$207,000…................Dancing with the Stars…$234,000 TBBT was in 12th place in 2011-2012. So there is no comparisons with two years ago. You may notice that some of the most expensive advertising, is on shows that are not in the top ten, in ratings. I’m going to show what I’ll call the cost per ratings point(CPRP). This will show how much each ratings point cost, based on a 30 second spot. They are on the top ten ad costs, mostly because of their previous demo levels. American Idol, and New Girl continued their decline in demo this year. This explains why those four have a higher ad costs per ratings point. Modern Family is interesting this year, it's cost per ratings point dropped this year as last year, their ratings fell a bit, and as a result, their ad rate fell. Please remember that the ratings this year, are based on the higher Live + 7 vs the Live + 3 from last year. This has cut this years cost a bit (I know that sounds funny since most have gone up). Two series were brand new and were in the top ten this year. How to get Away with Murder pulled in a 5.0, and the years biggest hit Empire had a 7.1. Scandal was on the schedule at the beginning of the year, and it's ad time sold for $146,000. This gave it a cost per ratings point of only 29,000. Empire was a mid season replacement, and as such, I don't have a advertising cost for it. However, the show it replaced was charging $118,000 per spot. This is right around the average for all first year shows, so that would give Empire a CPRP of only 15,764. That is extremely low and a bargain for those advertisers who bought time in that slot, at the beginning of the year. Ad rates are pretty much set at before the beginning of the season (at he Upfronts) , and are mostly based on the previous year’s performance (there are some residual, show reputation thing going on). A good example of this can be seen in the numbers for the TBBT and Modern Family. In 2012-13 TBBT had a 5.53 demo, and Modern Family had a 5.54, not much of a difference(Modern Family had 23,000 more demo viewers. In Total Viewers, TBBT had 15.82 million and Modern Family had 12.93 Million, three million more total viewers. While TBBT was virtually tied with Modern Family in Demo, it was pulling in almost three million more people. Yet, Modern Family was getting $55,000 more per 30 second spot. It was getting $331,000, while TBBT was getting $276,000, based on the previous years ratings (and also the Emmy buzz for Modern Family) , Based on the previous years ratings, it would cost $60,181 for a ratings point on Modern Family and $50,181 for TBBT However, by the end of the year, Modern Family dropped to a 4.9 demo rating and TBBT rose to a 6.2. The result of setting ad prices at the beginning of the season is that that $55,000 more per spot cost, ended with 1.3 rating points less than TBBT. Modern Family pulled in 12.31 million viewers, over six million less than TBBT 18.68 million viewers. This means that the actual cost 67,555 per ratings point for Modern Family and $44,516 for a ratings point on TBBT. This years (2014-2015) ad rates have already been released. TBBT has the second highest ad price for an broadcast entertainment (non-sports) show. Here are the top ten, with a comparison with previous years, where available. I qualified that with broadcast as there is a show that is getting higher ad rates, but it’s not on broadcast. It is “The Walking Dead”, on AMC, which is pulling in 400,000 for a thirty second spot. However, since ad packages on cable include multiple showing on the same night, it can be difficult to directly compare broadcast and cable ad rates. Let’s look at what that means for TBBT. I’m going to use $350,000 per spot, to simplify the math, even though that figure is tad above the average spot price for this year. Over the last two years, TBBT has averaged 7 repeat episodes (remember, that spot price is the average of all episodes) in it's time slot, so we’ll use 31 episodes (24 new + 7 repeats) and see where that takes us. Normally, a 30 minute comedy show runs 22 minutes, with 8 minutes of commercials. However, for the past two years, TBBT has been running an average of about 20 minutes and change (It was less in 2012-13, just under 20 minutes). So, we’ll use 20 minutes of run time and 11 minutes of ad time. Why 11, for a half hour comedy? Well, CBS has been running TBBT to 8:31PM (Eastern time), which allows them to add an extra minute of ad time, at the TBBT rate. So, now that we have all the numbers, let’s figure this out. 11 minutes of ad time, is 22 30 second spots. If we use $350,000 for the spot price, that means one show of TBBT brings in approximately $7.7 Million. Now, if you run 31 episodes, that means that TBBT can expect to bring in about $238 MILLION in ad revenue to CBS. Note to Kerry: I know that there are local commercial spots, and some other things that get moved around. I’m just using the full ad time as network ads, to simplify calculations and explanations. The license fee for TBBT has been estimated to be right around 5 million per episode (again, I’m using the same license fee per show, even repeats. That means that CBS is paying about 155 million dollars for season 8 of TBBT. So the show will bring in about 83 million in profit for CBS. Warner Brothers is getting that 155 million that CBS is paying. I’m going to go to year 10 for this part. At that point, baring changes, cast salaries alone, will be in the range of 5.5 million (the license fee may go up also, but not enough to affect my example). Now, if you’re wondering why Warner Brothers would pay the cast an amount (not to mention all the money they are paying the crew) that guaranties they won’t make a profit, you are missing syndication. For example, estimates place the price paid by TBS and Fox independent stations together at 2 million per episode (TBS $1,500,000, Fox $500,000. That means, that every episode that TBS airs, they pay Warner Brothers $1,500,000. That is with no production costs, as the episode has already been paid for. Now, there are some things that have to be paid out of that money. Bill Prady and Chuck Lorre are probably getting a fairly decent cut (along with Molaro having a smaller cut). the actors that have back end points(if we assume an average of 1% for each actor (again, simplifying the math, Jim, Kaley and Johnny are reportedly getting 1.25%)), the actors get $15,000 per episode). For, say, a Tuesday night when TBS runs six episodes, Warner Bothers is pulling in 9 Million dollars and the actors are pulling in $90,000 each. This should give you an idea of how much WB is pulling in, compared to the actors. New contracts will have to be drawn up for the syndication for seasons 8-10 and I’m sure there will be secondary sales to other off network stations. So, yeah, with as much as Warner Brothers is pulling in, I’m not sure why people get pissed about the actors wanting their cut. I have one more post to do on repeats from season 8, that will be later this week. Enjoy the second episode tonight. Tensor Week 02 Overnights: Households and Top 25 Demo, 29 September, 2015TBBT demonstrated the premiere bounce when it ran episode, 9.02 The Separation Oscillation at 8:00 PM and pulled in an 10.3 household rating with an 16 share last night. This was down 1.3 points in households and down 2 points in Share. Even down, TBBT was first in households, with that 10.3/16. In second was The Voice with a 8.0/12 and in third was Dancing with the Stars at 7.9/12. Both were even with last week.I would say that should give it a demo of 4.2, with a around 17 million at finals. In the top 25 demo ratings I have, TBBT led with a 4.3. Blindspot was second with a 2.1 and Gotham had a 2.0. I don't have the top 25 for The Voice, but it should be around a 3.0, which would put it in second. The vewers and demos should be up shortly. Tensor Week 02 Overnight Demo and Viewers 29 September, 2015Wow, didn't expect this, Episode 9.02 The Separation Oscillation fell hard and some hour splits of other shows actually beat the TBBT. The good news, it was still the highest overall with 3.6 demo with 14.88 million viewers, the bad news this is the first time TBBT has been under a 4.0 in September, since season 2. As I said, those ratings still placed it first in Demo and viewers. This was down nine tenths and 2.75 Million viewers from last weeks premiere. For viewers, second was The Voice with 11.83 Million and third was Dancing with the Stars with 11.72 million. In demo, second was The Voice with a 3.3, down two tenths and in third was the new NBC Show, Blindspot, with a 2.6, down five tenths. For the 18-34 demo, TBBT was first with a 2.2, The Voice was second with a 2.1 and Blindspot was third with a 1.6. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT had a 5.1 (down 1.2), The Voice was second with a 4.2 (down three tenths) and Blindspot was third with a 3.3 (down seven tenths). When I get the finals, I'll put them up. Tensor Week 02 Final Ratings For Monday, September 28, 2015 broadcasts, 29 September, 2015At 8:00 PM, the new episode of TBBT, 9.02, The Separation Oscillation, brought in a 3.8, with 15.23 million people, up two tenths in demo and up (350,000) viewers from the overnights. This was still down nine tenths from last weeks show, but down 2.97 million viewers. In first place, for demo, was TBBT with that 3.8. In second was The Voice at 3.4 , up a tenth from overnights, but down a tenth from last week. In third was the new show Blindspot with a 2.6, even with the overnights, but down five tenths from last week. For viewers, TBBT was number one with those 15.23 million viewers. The Voice was second with 12.02 million, up 200,000 from the overnights and down 350,000 from last week. Dancing with the Stars was in third at 11.04 million viewers, down 720,000 from the overnights, down 420,000 from the last week. This week the show was down 20% in demo, and the drop in viewers was rather steep. But, again, you have to remember that the 3.8 will probably be the high for the non-sports broadcast show for the week, except for Empire. And indication of how times have changed, I mentioned that the show hasn't been below a 4.0 in September since season 2. In that year, it finished in 40th, with an average demo of 3.8 (note that what it had this week). If it averages 3.8 this year, it will probably finish as the second highest non-sports series. This was down only 0.2 points in households and even in Share with week 2. This stabilized the drop of over a point last week. Even down, TBBT was first in households, with that 10.1/16. In second was Dancing with the Stars with a 8.1/13 Up three tenths in households and two points in share, and in third was The Voice, with a 8.1/12, up a tenth and even in share. I have Dancing with the Stars in second as their share was higher than The Voice. For TBBT, were probably looking at a 3.5 with around 14.5 Million viewers. This should go up in finals. In the top 25 demo ratings I have, TBBT led with a 4.1, down two tenths. For viewers, second was The Voice with 11.90 Million and third was Dancing with the Stars with 11.80 million (both basically even). In demo, second was The Voice with a 3.2, down a tenth and in third was the new NBC Show, Blindspot, with a 2.5, down a tenth. For the 18-34 demo, TBBT was tied for first with The Voice, with a 2.1 and Blindspot was third with a 1.5 down a tenth. The show that follows TBBT, Life in Pieces, had a 1.9, with 9.1 million viewers. It is losing right around half of the demo and about a third of the viewers. That's a bit worse than The Odd Couple last year.TBBT is taking a chunk out of The Voice. The second hour of The Voice is up about a half a demo point (or more in each of the demos and up almost two million viewers. Of course, The Voice may be taking some viewers from TBBT, but since TBBT is only on for a half hour, I can't compare it's ratings to when The Voice isn't on.When I get the finals, I'll put them up. Lat year, the ABC comedy block on Wednesday consisted of: The Middle with a demo of 2.0 and 7.1 Million viewers; The Goldbergs demo was 2.0, with 6.4 million; Modern Family was 2.7, with 7.9 million and Black-ish with a 1.8, 5.7 million. The averages for those shows last year was:The Middle: 2.0, 7.6 millionThe Goldbergs: 2.3, 7.2 millionModern Family: 3.2, 9.4 millionBlack-ish: 2.3, 7.1 MillionSo, this past week, The Middle, while even with last years average demo, is down a half a million viewers, which is 7%. The Goldbergs demo is down three tenths (down 14%) and 800,000 in viewers(down 11%). For Modern Family, its demo is down five tenths and viewers are down 1.5 million, (both down 16%). Black-ish is down five tenths in demo (22%) and 1.4 million viewers (down 20%). For comparison, last year TBBT averaged 4.1 demo and 16.1 million viewers. This past week it had a 3.9 demo with 15.0 million viewers. this was down two tenths in demo(5%) and 1.1 million viewers (down 7%). Much better than most of the shows on ABC, on Wednesday. The hot show last year, has maintained, comparatively, it's high demo again this year. Something to look at however, last year Empire increased it's demo every week. This year, it has dropped every week, hitting a 4.7 last week. This was the first time TBBT was within less than one demo point (4.7-3.9) of Empire, since the first week of March last spring, The 9th Empire episode out of 13 last year. I really think that TBBT would have hit 4.0 this week, if it hadn't been pre-empted in San Diego for the Monday Night Football game on the local CBS station there. Just to show how much Broadcast television ratings have changed in the last five years, there is a really good example from when I first really started looking more deeply into the ratings back in season four of TBBT. Not sure how many were watching TBBT back then, but it's season averages were a 4.4 demo, with 13.2 million viewers, 7th in demo, and 13th in viewers. While the current demo is below that, current total viewers is higher. But the example I'm looking at is the show that followed TBBT, "$#@! my Dad Says". During that season, it averaged a 3.1 demo with 10.7 million viewers, and it was cancelled. Now, Modern Family is the number four show (and number 2 comedy) with a 2.7, and 9.4 million viewers, while TBBT is the number 2 show (and number one comedy without even breaking a 4.0 demo. Tensor For anyone who's interested, episode 9.01 pulled in 2,788,000 viewers in CanadaNumeris Canada Ratings week of September 21This is down 1.2 million viewers from the season 8 premiere, and 600k viewers compared to the season 8 finale. Will be interesting to see if it maintains it's hold on the most watched show in Canada (which it's been since around season 4), especially once it moves back to Thursdays at 8pm (it currently airs Mondays at 730pm, so not much competition) Ashley85 Return to Archive Index. The word "hit" means a show has a rather large rating. TBBT was, in the ratings, a below average show. Cult status does not a hit make, ask Community or Parks and Rec. Both are very fine shows, but their cult status didn't transfer into a larger audience. Averaging 20 million, how? Live + Same Day? Live + 7? C3? You can't make a statement like that as there are various measurements. This year, in Live + Same Day, it's averaging less than 16 million. Live + 3, somewhere between 18-19 million. Live + 7, it is over 20 million. Advertisers pay an average of $344k per 30 second spot. And what do you mean by highest demo? The third season had the highest raw number for Live + same day with 5.26. However, that season aired after Two and a Half Men, on Monday night. So, it aired after the number one comedy the prior year, and also on Monday night at 9:30, a night and time with a higher number of viewers. The sixth season of TBBT had a 5.25, only one hundredth below season three, yet that aired on Thursday at 8:00 PM, a night with a lower number of viewers, generally, than Monday, at a time with a lower number of viewers, again generally, with a lead in of only local shows, after a three year erosion of total viewers by about 30%. You can do a mathematical comparison* to show, using current viewing numbers (well current through last year), taking into account lead in and Households/Persons Using Television that season three has a 3.15 average for the season, only fifth best, even though it had a 5.25 demo rating in raw numbers. Season Six has a 4.19, a full point higher. Season seven has the highest comparison demo with a 4.52 and season eight is the second highest with a 4.32. Season nine is currently at 4.04, and even season five had a higher comparison demo than season three, with a 3.65. You can't just say that this season was higher than this other season. You have to take into account several different factors. *Mathmatical comparison can be seen and explained at Spotted Ratings Return to Archive Index. In third place, was Scandal, with 8.03 million viewers, even with the overnights, but down 3.85 million viewers from the last Monday third place show, The Voice. I compared this week's second and third place shows, with the Monday second and third place shows, so you can see the difference in viewers. The top three shows last night had almost 10 million fewer viewers then when the last Monday TBBT was broadcast. This is why I mentioned the ratings going down, once it moved to Thursday. It's still the second highest ranked non-sports show. I'm preparing a post to show the difference in viewers, households and ratings between Monday and Thursday. It's second half hour was much lower. Tensor Week 08 Overnights: Households and Top 25 Demo, 13 November, 2015 Quote TBBT ran episode, 9.08 The Mystery Date Observation at 8:00 PM and pulled in an 10.0 household rating with an 16 share last night. This was up three tenths of a point in households and even in share vs week 7. TBBT was first in households, with that 10.0/16. In second Was Grey's Anatomy with 6.3/10, even with last week, and in third was Scandal, with a 6.1/10, down two tenths. In the top 25 markets, TBBT was first with a 4.0, Scandal was second with a 2.6, and Grey's Anatomy was third with a 2.4. TBBT may be a bit inflated due since the were pre-empted in NY for NFL football. The vewers and demos should be up shortly. Week 08 Overnight Demo and Viewers 13, November, 2015 Quote Episode 9.08 The Mystery Date Observation brought in a 3.8 with 15.29 million viewers. Those ratings placed it first in Demo and viewers. This was even in demo and up by 250,000 viewers from the overnights for last weeks episode. NFL football pre-empted TBBT on both of the local affiliates in both cities last night, one of those cities was New York. As a result, I really expect a drop in both demo and viewers in the finals. For viewers, second was Life in Pieces with 9.50 Million, up 310,000 viewers from last week (however, expect this to drop after the final adjustments come in, for the same reason as TBBT. Mom finished in third, with 8.57 up 180,000 from last week, although, again, look for a drop in the finals. Second in demo was Life in Pieces with a 2.3, tied for last week, but again expect a drop. Tied for third was Scandal and Grey's Anatomy with a 2.2, both were down a tenth from last week, when they were both in second. Expect both of these to move ahead of Life in Pieces in the finals. For the 18-34 demo, TBBT was first with a 2.2(down a tenth). In second was Grey's Anatomy and Scandal with a 1.7, down two tenths from last week. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT led with a 5.3(even), Life in Pieces was second with a 3.1 (down a tenth) and there was a four way tie for third at 2.8 down a tenth from last weeks number three. Life in Pieces and two of the third place shows were on CBS (Mom and Two Broke Girls) which are probably lower, once the pre-emptions are taken into account. When I get the finals I'll put them up. Tensor Week 08 Final Ratings For Thursday, 12 November for 2015 broadcasts, 13 November, 2015 Quote At 8:00 PM, the new episode of TBBT, 9.08, The Mystery Date Observation, brought in a 3.7, with 14.92 million people, down a tenth in demo and down 370,000 viewers from the overnights. This was even in demo and up 110,000 viewers from last week. The adjustment down from overnights was due to the NFL game that was televised on the local CBS channels in both cities, including New York. As expected, the CBS shows dropped, some by a half a point. In first place, for demo, was TBBT with that 3.7. There was a tie for second between Grey's Anatomy and Scandal, with a 2.2. Both were even with the overnights, and were a tenth down from last weeks second place show (Grey's) and tied with last weeks third place show (Scandal). For viewers, TBBT was number one with those 14.92 million viewers. In second, was Grey's Anatomy with 8.02 million viewers. This was up 30,000 viewers from the overnights, but down 480,000 viewers from the last week, when it was also in second place. In third place, was Scandal, with 7.99 million viewers, down 1.51 million viewers from the overnights, and lower by 40,000 from last week's third place show, Scandal. In a bit of a reversal this week, we have the top 25 markets, but not the households. If and when I get those, I'll add them. In the top 25 markets, TBBT was first with a 3.9, Scandal and How to get Away with Murder tied for second with a 2.7. TBBT was pre-empted in at lease one market for NFL football. Both markets are much smaller than the NY pre-emptions last week, so there shouldn't be as much of an effect as there was last week. The vewers and demos should be up shortly. Tensor Week 09 Overnight Demo and Viewers 20, November, 2015 Quote Episode 9.09 The Platonic Permutation brought in a 3.8 with 15.24 million viewers. Those ratings placed it first in Demo and viewers. This was even in demo and down by 40,000 viewers from the overnights for last weeks episode. NFL football pre-empted TBBT on the local affiliates in both cities (Nashville, Jacksonville) last night. I won't even try to call the change, as these markets are no where near as big as last week with NY and Buffalo. For viewers, second was Life in Pieces with 8.97 Million, down 530,000 viewers from last week (however, expect an adjustment here). Grey's Anatomy finished in third, with 8.46 down 110,000 from last week's third place show. Second in demo was Grey's Anatomy with a 2.5, up a two tenths from last week's second place show. In third was Scandal with a 2.4, up two tenths from last week. For the 18-34 demo, TBBT was first with a 2.1(down a tenth). In second was Grey's Anatomy and Scandal with a 1.9, up two tenths from last week. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT led with a 5.4(up a tenth), with Grey's Anatomy and Life in Pieces tied for second with a 3.0 (down a tenth). When I get the finals I'll put them up. Tensor Week 09 Final Ratings For Thursday, 19 November for 2015 broadcasts, 20 November, 2015 Quote At 8:00 PM, the new episode of TBBT, 9.09, The Platonic Permutation, brought in a 3.8, with 15.19 million people, even in demo and down 50,000 viewers from the overnights. This was up a tenth in demo and up 270,000 viewers from last week. The lack of an increase from overnights was probably due to the NFL game being televised in both cities, on a CBS channel in both cities. As expected, the CBS shows dropped, but much less than last week. In first place, for demo, was TBBT with that 3.8. In second was Grey's Anatomy with a 2.5, up three tenths from last week and in third was Scandal, with a 2.4, up two tenths from last week, when it was also the third place show. Both Grey's and Scandal were even with the overnights. For viewers, TBBT was number one with those 15.19 million viewers. In second, was Grey's Anatomy with 8.50 million viewers. This was up 480,000 viewers from the overnights, and up 480,000 viewers from the last week, when it was also in second place. In third place, Life in Pieces, with 7.99 million viewers, down 620,000 million viewers from the overnights, and up by 360,000 from last week's third place show, Scandal. Tensor News and Notes for Week 09, Week Ending 22 November, 2015 Quote Canadian Ratings, by ashleyo85 Week 10 Canadian results for episode 9.07 (The Spock Resonance) are in. When I first saw the numbers my thoughts were "what the heck happened?!" and then I realized this was the first week that it switched to Thursday. Viewership has DOUBLED since previous episodes, with a total of 4.122 million (Live +7, all demographics). It CRUSHED all it's competition taking the #1 spot again (The next highest was NCIS with 2.8 million viewers, and other shows on Thursday at 8pm didn't even make the top 30). Interesting fact, that 4.122 million is actually about 12% of the entire population of Canada. I am beyond happy about this! Numeris Canada Ratings week of November 2 UK ratings, by rachelshamyfan In the UK E4 showed 9.05 at 830pm and received 1.28 million (5.8%) and another 279000 on the repeat channel 30 minutes later http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/ratings/news/a774708/uk-tv-ratings-im-a-celebrity-up-to-78m/ Wednesday, 18 November, 2015 Interesting bit of ratings minutiae, during week 6. As you can see above, TBBT was the top show in terms of demo lift, demo, and total viewers, and had the second highest lift in viewers. However, it was the first time all year that the demo lift did not hit a 2.0 and it was the first time this year that viewer lift was below five million viewers. And yet, week six had the highest total demo and highest number of viewers since the season premiere. This is all due to the show having a 4.4 demo, with over 16 million viewers, in same day viewing. The highest number of Live + Same day ratings since the season premiere. This probably has something to do with the week six episode being the lead in to the series premiere of "Supergirl". A special edition of Sunday Night Football, brought in an 8.0 demo, with 25.17 Million viewers. CBS ran a repeat of Episode 9.01 The Matrimonial Momentum, and brought in a 3.4 with 12.83 million viewers. For non-sports shows, those ratings placed it first in Demo and viewers . This high demo and viewers, for a repeat, are undoubtably due to the late afternoon game on CBS. (To give you some perspective, TBBT repeat is on pace to be the highest rated non-sports show this week, beating even a new Empire on Wednesday, which had a 3.1. Since TBBT was a repeat, and the other CBS shows were airing on a holiday, I won't have the comparison from the previous week. For viewers, second was Life in Pieces with 8.01 Million and in third was Mom, with 6.72 million. Second in demo was Live in Pieces with a 2.2, and in third was a tie between Mom and Two Broke Girls, with a 1.6. For the 18-34 demo, TBBT was first with a 2.6. In the Top 25 Markets, TBBT was first with a 3.4. Life in Pieces was second with a 1.9 and Mom was third with a 1.5. For those who are interested, The Muppets, with Bill Prady as Executive Producer ran a repeat and had a 0.6, with 2.17 million viewers. The All-star Dog Rescue, which was hosted by Kaley, had a 0.4, with 2.07 million viewers. I will not be getting the finals until Monday, due to the American Thanksgiving holiday. This means the archive post will also be delayed until at least Monday. Tensor Week 10 Final Ratings For Thursday, 26 November for 2015 broadcasts, 01 December, 2015 Quote At 8:00 PM, the repeat episode of TBBT, 9.01, The Matrimonial Momentum, brought in a 3.2, with 12.05 million people, down two tenths in demo and down 780,000 viewers from the overnights. As it was a repeat, and the rest were on Thanksgiving night, I won't be doing comparisons from the previous weeks. With the drop of two tenths, and Empires increase of one tenth, the repeat episode of TBBT tied the NEW episode of Empire in demo for the week, for non-sports shows. The ending of the late afternoon football game has a lot to dow with TBBT demo. Sunday Night Football has a special Thursday night edition. It had a 9.0 demo, with 27.75 million viewers. In first place, for demo, was TBBT with that 3.2. In second was Life in Pieces with a 2., down a tenth in overnights. In third was Mom, with a 1.7, up a tenth from the overnights. For viewers, TBBT was number one with those 12.03 million viewers. In second, was Life in Pieces with 7.61 million viewers. This was down 400,000 viewers from the overnights. At 8:00 PM Thursday, TBBT epiosode 9.01 The Matrimonial Momentum was broadcast. Note that this was a repeat and the rest of the shows on the list are new programming. This week's top ten contained several football overruns, pre and post game shows, in addition to holiday programs. Those type of programs I normally remove from the rankings, as they are not weekly scheduled programs. NBC, CBS, FOX designated all their shows on Wednesday as specials, this way, the usually low ratings, are not counted in the season total. I will not designate them as specials. Specials that were in the top ten were a special night of Sunday night football on Thanksgiving, it had a 9.0 demo, 11.4 million demo viewers and 27.7 million viewers and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving with a 2.2 demo, 2.8 million demo viewers and 7.5 million total viewers. Tensor Week 12 Overnights: Top 25 Demo, 11 November, 2015 Quote TBBT ran episode, 9.10 The Ear Worm Reverberation at 8:00 PM. I In the top 25 markets, TBBT was first with a 3.8, this was down a tenth from the last new episode 9.09 The Platonic Permutation. Second, was Life in Pieces with a 1.7, down a full point from the number two last week. Third was Mom with a 1.5, down over a point from last weeks number three. There is some chatter that the show was pre-empted in at lease one market for NFL football, more information as i get it. The vewers and demos should be up shortly. Week 12 Overnight Demo and Viewers 11 November, 2015 Quote Episode 9.10 The Ear Worm Reverberation brought in a 4.0 with 16.01 million viewers. Those ratings placed it first in Demo and viewers. This was up two tenths in demo and up by 770,000 viewers from the overnights for the last new episode, 9.09 The Platonic Permutation. NFL football pre-empted TBBT on the local affiliates in both cities (Phoenix and Minneapolis) last night, so I expect the numbers to be even, at best. For viewers, second was the Special "Dolly" with 12.85 Million, up 3.88 million viewers from last week. Life in Pieces finished in third, with 9.64 million, up 1.08 million from last weeks third place show. Second in demo was Life in Pieces with a 2.4, down a tenth from last week's second place show. In third was Mom with a 2.0, down two tenths from last week's third place show. For the 18-34 demo, TBBT was first with a 2.2(up a tenth). In second was Life in Pieces with a 1.2, down seven tenths from last weeks new show and Two Broke Girls with a 1.1, down nine tenths from last week's third place show. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT led with a 5.6(up two tenths), with Life in Pieces with a 3.3, up three tenths from last week's second place show and in third was Mom with a 2.9 (down a tenth). When I get the finals I'll put them up. Tensor Week 12 Final Ratings For Thursday, 10 December for 2015 broadcasts, 11 December, 2015 Quote At 8:00 PM, the new episode of TBBT, 9.10, The Ear Worm Reverberation, brought in a 3.8, with 15.27 million people, down two tenths and down 740,000 viewers from the overnights. This was even in demo and up 80,000 viewers from the last new show on 19 November, 9.09 The Platonic Permutation. The drop from the overnights was probably due to the NFL game being televised on CBS in both cities, on a CBS.. In fact, all the CBS shows dropped. In first place, for demo, was TBBT with that 3.8 (Last week the NFL game was in first with a 5.3). In second was Life in Pieces with a 1.9, down five tenths from the overnights and down 1.5 points from last weeks number two, The Wiz:Live. In third was the movie "Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors", with a 1.8, even with the overnights, and down five tenths from last week, when The Pre-game Show was the third place show. For viewers, TBBT was number one with those 15.27 million viewers (Last week, the NFL game was first with 17.85 million viewers). In second, was "Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors" with 13.03 million viewers. This was up 180,000 viewers from the overnights, and up 1.53 million viewers from the last week, last week's second place show, The Wiz:Live. In third place, Life in Pieces, with 8.24 million viewers, down 1.4 million viewers from the overnights (remember the pre-emption), and down by 1.1 million viewers from last week's third place show, the NFL Pre-game.
