For daytime shows, the women 25-54 is the more important ratings. As you can see, TBBT still does rather well with this demo. There is a show called Weekend Adventure. It is a group of nature programs broadcast during the day on weekends for kids. I've pulled it as it is not late Afternoon/early evening programming. Tensor Week 25 Early Household Ratings and Top 25 Markets; 11 March, 2016 Quote TBBT ran a new episode last night, 9.18 The Application Deterioration at 8:00 PM and it had a 9.6 Household Rating, with a 16 Share (9.6/16). In households, number one for the night was TBBT repeat with that 9.6 Household rating (this was up 3.2 from last week's repeat of 9.08 The Mystery Date Observation.), with a 16 share (up six points from last weeks new show), in second was Grey's Anatomy at a 5.8/9 (down two tenths in households and even in share from last week). In third, was American Idol with a 5.6/9. Down two tenths in households, and even in share from last week's third place show. In the top 25 markets, TBBT led with a 3.5, down two tenths from the last available week. Second was Grey's Anatomy with a 2.3, up two tenths from the last available week and in third was Life in Pieces with a 1.9, down two tenths from last week. The demo, viewers and demo splits should be available shortly. Tensor Week 25 Overnights and Demo Breakouts for 11 March, 2016 Quote While TBBT set season lows in both demo and viewers, it still lead the night by a large margin. CBS ran a new episode of TBBT, 9.18 The Application Deterioration. It pulled in a 3.5 Demo, with a 13 Share, and14.49 Million viewers. This was up 1.7 demo points, down six points in share, and up 4.41 million viewers from last weeks REPEAT of 9.08 The Mystery Date Observation. For Demo, TBBT was in first, with the 3.5, this was up 1.3 from last week's first place show. There was a tie for second between Grey's Anatomy and Life in Pieces at 2.1, down a tenth from last week's number two show. For viewers, TBBT was first with the 14.49 million viewers, Life in Pieces was second with a 8.82 million, up 140,000 from last week's second place show and third was Mom with 8.05 million viewers, down 380,000 viewers from last week's third place show. In the 18-34 demo, TBBT was first with a 2.0 (even with last week), second was a new Grey's Anatomy at 1.6 (up two tenths ) and in third was American Idol at 1.1 (up a tenth). In the 25-54 demo, the repeat of TBBT had a 5.0(up two points) for first. In second was Life in Pieces at 3.1 (up two tenths) from the second place show last week, and Mom was third with a 2.7 (down a tenth) from the third place show last week). NOTE: This was the last episode airing during Standard time. Next Sunday, the US implements Daylight Savings Time. The history of TBBT is that it drops about a half a point, in demo, and 1-2 million in viewers (as do many of the rest of the shows). The next two weeks, the show is off for the NCAA Basketball Championship Tournament. I will bring this up again, but just be prepared for demos in the low threes (Possibly upper twos), along with viewers dropping to 13 million (possibly 12 million) when the show returns The finals will be up later, when I'm able to get to them. Tensor Week 25 Final Ratings For Friday, March 11, 2016; for broadcasts, 10 March, 2016 Quote The show did not increase it's demo, making it the lowest rated show this year, so far. Tensor News, Notes, and International Ratings for Week 26, Week Ending 20 March, 2016 Quote Year to year comparisons, season highs and lows, Friday 18 March. Since there was not TBBT last night, I thought I'd update all of you on how this season is doing compared to last season, along with some highs and lows. Just a reminder, at this point, we only have 18 episodes, and only 17 for Live + 7 for this season, so, I'll be using week 18 and 17 from last year for comparison. I don't have exact numbers for viewers, but they are down less than demo. So research, from what I can find, viewers are down about 10% I have to thank the site "Spotted Ratings" for the overall change from last year, and this years demo average: Overall broadcast television demo is down 13% from last year. and the average demo, for all entertainment programs (non-sports) is 1.47. For Live + Same Day 2015-2016 2014-2015 Change/Pct Demo 3.89 4.32 -0.43 / -10.0% Viewers (in millions) 15.66 16.72 -1.06 / -6.4% For Live + 7 2015-2016 2014-2015 Change/Pct Demo 6.08 6.91 -0.83 / -12.1% Viewers (in Millions) 21.16 22.16 -1.00 / -4.6% So, just from the raw numbers, Live + Same demo is down four tenths and Live + 7 is down eight tenths from last year. While it is down, it is some solace that it is down less than the the broadcast average, percentage wise. Also note the average demo across all non-sport programs is 1.48. TBBT is almost two and a half points higher than this. And while viewers is down, it is one of only five shows that break 10 million viewers every week. For Live Plus Same day the highest demo was Sep 21 (Lenny Wedding) with a 4.8. The lowest was Mar 10 (Application) at 3.5. The most viewers was, again, Sep 21 with 18.2 million. The lowest was a tie between Mar 10 and Oct 19, (Perspiration) the last Monday show, both at 14.7 million. For Live Plus 7, the highest demo of the year was a 7.0, on the 17th of Dec (Shamy Coitus). The lowest was a 5.7, on the 18th of February (Tiki Bar Karaoke). For viewers, the highest was 24.4 million (Sep 21 Shamy coitus), the lowest was a tie between Nov 5th(Spock Resonance) and Nov 12th (Mystery Date), at 19.9 million. The highest increase for Live + 7 for both demo and viewers was Dec 1(Shamy coitus) at 2.9 for demo, and 7.17 million for viewers. The smallest increase in demo was for Oct 29th (Helium) and Feb 18th (Tiki Bar) with a 1.9. This was a very weak, Broadcast week. There was no TBBT broadcast this week, due to the NCAA Basketball Tournament, and the number one demo was under 3.0. Even in viewers, NCIS was the only show to break 15 million, but it didn't make it to 16 million. There were several NCAA basketball tournament games in the top ten this week, The high pulled in a 3.6, with 4.5 Million demo viewers, and 11 million total viewers, to a low of 1.5, 1.9 million demo veiwers, and 6.8 million total viewers. A bit of a warning. The Voice has dropped from the mid three's to under three, and Modern familay has dropped from the upper twos, to the mid twos. Expect TBBT to be in the lower threes, with it hitting below a three, before the end of thee season. Thursday night will be the first show to air since the change to daylight savings time. In second was American Idol at 4.1 (up 1.3 points) from the second place show last week, and Grey's Anatomy was third with a 2.4 (down three tenths) from the third place show last week). The drop this week was, more than likely, caused by the Final show of the American Idol run. TBBT finished fourth, with it's repeat with a 1.3. The demo, viewers and demo splits should be available shortly. Tensor Week 30 Overnights and Demo Breakouts for 15 April, 2016 Quote TBBT ran a repeat of 9.09 The Platonic Permutation. It had the highest number of viewers for any show last night with over 8 million. CBS ran a repeat episode of TBBT, 9.09 The Platonic Permutation. It pulled in a 1.5 Demo, with a 13 Share, and 8.54 Million viewers. This was down 1.5 demo points and five points in share, and down 5.5 million viewers from the last new episode, 9.20 The Big Bear Precipitation.. For Demo, Both the 8:00 PM and the 9:00 PM broadcasts of a new Grey's Anatomy tied for first, with a 2.2, this was down eight tenths from last week's first place show. There was a tie for third at 1.5 between a repeat of TBBT, and new shows of the rest of CBS' comedy lineup, The Odd Couple, Mom, and Two Broke Girls , down six tenths from last week's third place show. For viewers, TBBT was first with the 8.54 million viewers, this was down 5.5 million viewers from last weeks number one show, a new TBBT. The 8:00 PM Grey's Anatomy was second with a 8.10 million, down 3.6 million viewers from last week's second place show and third was the 9:00 PM Grey's Anatomy with 7.84 million viewers, up 20,000 viewers from last week's third place show. In the 18-34 demo, There was a tie for first between both broadcasts of Grey's Anatomy at 8:00 and 9:00 PM at 1.8. In the 25-54 demo, again, both Grey's Anatomy's had a 2.6(down 1.8 demo points) for first. There was another tie for third, both Chuck Lorre shows TBBT and Mom at 2.3 demo, this was down only a tenth from last weeks third place show. These number are quite respectable for a rerun. Every other show last night was new, yet TBBT finished in at least third place in all the demos and was the most watched program, in terms of viewers last night. A repeat was the most viewed program, think about that. The finals will be up later, when I'm able to get to them. Tensor Week 30 Final Ratings For Friday, April 15, 2016; for broadcasts, 14 April, 2016 Quote The 8:00 PM broadcast of the repeat of episode, 9.20, The Big Bear Precipitation, finished with a 1.5, with 8.54 million people, This was up even in demo and viewers from the overnights. There was a tie for third this week between TBBT, Mom, Two Broke Girls and The Odd Couple with a 1.5. Even with the overnights, and down six tenths from last week's number three show. Rick News, Notes, and International Ratings for Week 30, Week Ending 18 April, 2016 Quote Note from Thursday 04 April, 2016 For those who were worried about the decline in TBBT ratings, I'll throw this out there from last night. Modern Family, the number 2 comedy behind TBBT, had a 2.2 demo last night, this is down from their average demo of 3.1 from last year (and almost a point behind TBBT from last week). The Voice, dropped below a 2, with a 1.7 demo, down from its 3.2 from last year. And Empire, which is leading all shows this year had a 3.8, down from the 5.1 average from last year, and down almost three points (6.7) from it fall premiere. So, TBBT is still in pretty good shape. Y'all have to remember, don't just look at the raw numbers, they don't exist in a vacuum. Look around and compare the numbers to the other shows. Return to Archive Index. Tuesday night, after 300+ episodes, NCIS fell below a 2.0 for the first time, with a 1.9. While not as long running, The Voice also fell below 2.0, with a 1.7. That leaves TBBT, Empire, and Modern Family as the only non-sports shows currently on television that have never had a demo rating below 2.0 during their run. In 2012, the first show that averaged below a 2.0 was in 77th place. I know, a single night is not the same as a season average, I give it to you as a comparison. Return to Archive Index. This was down three points in households and even in share from last weeks new episode 9.22 The Fermentation Bifurcation (9.3/16). In households, number one for the night was TBBT with that 9.0/16. In second was Grey's Anatomy with a 5.8 Household and a 10 share, down three tenths in Households from last weeks number 2 episode, but even in share. In third was Mom, with a 5.4 Household and a 8 share, up a point in households, but down a point in share from last week's number three show. Mom, at 9 PM, continues to outperform The Odd Couple, up by three tenths, even though The Odd Couple benefits from TBBT lead in. If and when the Top 25 data come in, I'll add it here. Tensor Week 33 Overnights and Demo Breakouts for 06 May, 2016 Quote CBS ran a new episode of TBBT, 9.23 The Line Substitution Solution. It pulled in a 2.9 demo, with a 12 share and 12.86 million viewers. This is the first time the show has been below a 3.0 since season one. This was down four tenths in demo points, down a point in share, and down a million viewers from the last new episode, 9.22 The Fermentation Bifurcation. TBBT was number on in demo with that 2.9. In second was Grey's Anatomy with a 2.0. This was up a tenth from last weeks second place show. There was a tie for third between Mom, The Odd Couple, and Two Broke Girls at 1.6, down two tenths last weeks third place show. For viewers, TBBT was first with the 12.86 million viewers, this was down a million viewers from last weeks number one show. There was a tie for second as Mom and The Odd Couple both had 8.24 million viewers, down 80,000 viewers from last week's second place show. In the 18-34 demo, Grey's Anatomy was in first with a 1.6, down a tenth from last weeks number one show. In second was TBBT at 1.5, down a tenth from last weeks second place show and in third was Scandal, with a 1.1, down a tenth from last weeks third place show. In the 25-54 demo, TBBT was first with a 4.2 demo, down five tenths from lasts weeks first place show. In second, there was a tie between Mom and The Odd Couple with a 2.5, down two tenths from last week's second place show. To sooth some worries, it will still be the number two show this week. The finals will be up later, when I'm able to get to them. Tensor Week 33 Final Ratings For Friday, May 06, 2016; for broadcasts, 05 May, 2016 Quote The 8:00 PM broadcast the new episode, 9.23 The Line Substitution Solution final demo rating was a 3.0, with 13.22 million. This was up a tenth, and up 360,000 viewers from the overnights. This week's episode was down four tenths in demo, but down 910,000 viewers from last week's new episode 9.22 The Fermentation Bifurcation, which got a 3.4 demo with 14.16 million viewers. For viewers, TBBT was number one with those 13.22 million viewers. In second, was The Odd Couple with 8.07 million viewers. This was down 170,000 viewers from the overnights and down 200,000 viewers from last weeks number two show. In third place, was Mom, which had 7.92 million viewers, down 320,00 viewers from the overnights, and down 240,000 viewers from the third place show from last week. For Demo, In first was TBBT with that 3.0. In second was Grey's Anatomies with a 2.0. This was even with the overnights and last week's number two show. In third this week was a tie between Two Broke Girls and The Odd Couple, with a 1.6. This was even with the overnights, and down a tenth from last week's number three show. With the increase, TBBT avoided dropping below a three for the final rating. This leave only Empire and TBBT as current shows that have not had a final rating below a 3.0 this year. Tensor News, Notes, and International Ratings for Week 33, Week Ending 08 May, 2016 After some comments in our discussion thread, a poster noted that TBBT demo ratings have dropped to season one levels. And, also noted the viewers between the mid year viewers of around 17 million have dropped to 13.2 million, with this week's new episode. More than one of our members have voiced disappointment with the writing this year, and wonder if the decline in ratings may have something to do with that. In response, I wrote the following post: On May 7, 2016 at 1:55 AM, Tensor said: While they have dropped to season one levels, you have to remember, the same number in 2007-8, was worth a lot less than the same number is worth now. In 2007-8 the average, non-sports, broadcast demo rating was 3.32. So, a 2.9 would have been 88% of the average broadcast show. This year, the average, non-sports, broadcast, demo rating is projected to be 1.45 (it's currently 1.48), which mean the 2.9 is 200% of the average broadcast show. That 2.9 in 2007, garnered 7.79 million viewers, compared to the 13.22 million it had on Thursday. Whether or not you call Episode 11 one of the highest rated episodes ever, depends on how you define ever. That 17.2 million, for same day, is no better than 40th, for the run (all 24 episodes of the 7th season were higher than this) . If you include the live + 7, it is 11th, so you might have an argument there. The Live + 7 lift was over 7 million viewers. No other show has ever been over 7 million. BTW, Thursday's show had 13.2 million viewers in final, it had 12.86 million for overnights. The drop in viewers, from mid season to the end of the season, would be more disconcerting if it hadn't happen before. In season 6, episode 12 had 20.00 million viewers, episode 24 had 15.24 million. A loss of 4.76 million. In season 7, episode 12 had 19.05 million(episode 13 had 20.35 million), episode 23 had 14.42. A loss of 4.53 million (5.93 million) In season 8, episode 12 had 18.41 million, episode 23 had 13.85 million. A loss of 4.56 million. This year, episode 11 had 17.23 million, episode 23 had 13.22, a loss of 4.01 million. This year, the loss was actually the smallest in the last four years. You may notice that the mid season numbers have dropped by roughly 750,000 each year, while the end of season numbers have dropped by roughly 600,000 per year, very much in line with overall drop in viewers each of the last four years. As for the contention that viewers are leaving because of the writing, I don't disagree completely. While I think the majority of the missing viewers can be explained by exodus of viewers from broadcast television, there are some who are leaving based on their disappointment with the show. I know several people who have moved on from the show. I struggled with it earlier this year, and overall I'm still a bit uncertain. But you have to remember, with even as much as they've lost, it is still the biggest comedy and second biggest show out there. You made an analogy of someone only has to out run someone else, not the bear chasing them. There is a part of one of the ratings sites I look at that comments on what shows they believe will be cancelled, and which shows will be renewed. It's called the Cancellation Bear, because the analogy you used is dead on. Basically you only have to be better than the other types of shows you are similar to, on your own network. As long as TBBT has higher ratings than everything else on CBS, no matter how bad you may think the writing has gotten, they are not going to cancel it, unless production costs become higher than the revenue it brings in, and that will only happen when the ratings drop enough so that revenue drops. And I don't expect that to happen over the next year. They could lose 50% of their audience next year, and still be higher than the broadcast average. If you want to compare TBBT to the the second highest rated comedy, Modern Family on ABC, heres that. TBBT will finish with a 3.7 demo, Modern Family will have a 2.6. That means TBBT would have to lose 30% of it's audience next year, with Modern Family lost nothing. I should note that TBBT has dropped 14%, Modern Family has dropped 21%. Now let's compare TBBT with only those comedies on CBS. Again, TBBT has a 3.7. Of the shows that have been renewed, the highest rated is 'Mom" with a 1.61. TBBT would have to lose over half of it's audience, about 58% to drop below Mom. And 'Mom' has dropped 28% this year. Return to Archive Index. Tensor Week 35 Households, Top 25, Overnights and Demo Breakouts for 20 May, 2016 Quote As the season is over for TBBT, I'm going to make a bit of a change to the reports this week. They will be put up later and will include all the early numbers in one post. There will not be comparisons to previous weeks. CBS ran a repeat of 9.11 The Opening Night Excitation. It had a 5.7 with a 10 share (5.7/10)in households. In demo, it had a 1.7, with a 7 share and 8.45 million viewers. For households, Grey's Anatomy was in first with a 6.1/11. In second was TBBT with a 5.7/10, and in third was Mom, with a 5.3/9. In the top 25 markets, Grey's Anatomy was number one with a 2.4. Number two was the Blacklist with 1.5 and Mom was third with a 1.4. Number one for the night, in demo, was the season finale of Grey's Anatomy, with a 2.3. TBBT as tied with Mom for second with a 1.7. For viewers, TBBT was first with 8.45 million viewers, in second was Grey's Anatomy with 8.12 million viewers. In third was Mom, with 8.00 million viewers. In the 18-34 demo, Grey's Anatomy was in first with a 1.9. There was a tie for second, at 1.0 between TBBT and Mom. In the 25-54 demo, Grey's Anatomy was first with a 2.7 and in second, was TBBT with a 2.6. Finally, in third was Mom, with a 2.5. I want to point out that TBBT was running a repeat and the three shows on the list above (Grey's Anatomy, Mom, and the Blacklist) were running the season finale. And speaking of TBBT repeats, I have a post I will be putting up about how TBBT repeats did this year, and how they compare to the first run shows this season. The finals will be up later, when I'm able to get them. Tensor Week 35 Final Ratings For Friday, May 20, 2016; for broadcasts, 19 May, 2016 Quote In the finals, the only changes I normally get are for demo and for viewers. In this case, none of the top three in demo changed. For viewers, TBBT increased by 180,000 viewers to 8.63 million viewers. in second was Grey's Anatomy was up 70,000 viewers to 8.19 million. In third was Mom, was up 140,000 viewers to 8.14 million viewers. So, for the night, TBBT repeat had the highest number of viewers. Tensor News, Notes, and International Ratings for Week 35, Week Ending 29 May, 2016 Quote The Big Bang Theory Repeats' ratings for 2015-2016 TBBT will, for the second straight year, run at least as many repeats as it does new shows. Last year CBS ran 32 in-season repeats. This year, there are now 23, with one more scheduled for next week, the traditional end of the winter season. Since we don't get DVR viewing for repeats, I will be using Live + Same Day ratings through this whole post. So, how did the repeats of TBBT do? First, there were 101 different shows on the five broadcast networks this year. For all the broadcast shows, the average demo rating is 1.42 this year. I don't have the average number of viewers for broadcast shows, (I'll get it an put it in here) but I do have individual viewer numbers for this year. For all TBBT repeats, the average demo was 1.63 and with an average of 7.76 million viewers. It pulled in a 3.2 demo for the Thanksgiving evening repeat, with over 12 million viewers. Only two show averaged a 3.0 this year, and only three shows averaged over 12 million viewers (Including new TBBT). I know that a single episode is not the same as an average for a season. But remember, were talking about repeats here. In addition, TBBT repeats never fell below a 1.0 this year. If we think of repeats as a separate show, that 1.63 demo makes it a top 25 show at 22nd. Supergirl was 21st with a 1.68 and Law and Order:SVU was 23rd, with a 1.62. In terms of viewers, the 7.76 million makes it a top 20 show, in 19th. In 18th was Mom, with 7.90 million viewers and in 20th was Supergirl, with 7.69. Remember, we are comparing TBBT repeats with first run episodes of the other shows. Compare the ratings the repeats pulled in, compared to the other CBS comedies: TBBT repeats 1.63 demo 7.76 million viewers Life in Pieces 1.99 demo 8.63 million viewers Mom 1.68 demo 7.90 million viewers Two Broke Girls 1.61 demo 6.42 million veiwers Mike and Molly 1.55 demo 7.26 million viewers The Odd Couple 1.50 demo 7.24 million viewers The top comedies on the other networks were: ABC Modern Family 2.58 demo 7.97 million viewers FOX Brooklyn Nine-nine 1.21 demo 2.72 million viewers NBC Superstore 1.48 demo 5.08 million viewers Again, remember, it's TBBT repeats, and first run episodes of those other shows. It's amazing, really, how similar the averages of "Supergirl" and repeats of TBBT are. CBS could have run repeats of TBBT in place of "Supergirl", got basically the same ratings, at a much lower cost. Which is why you've seen CBS adding TBBT repeats in places where they cancelled a show (Angel from Hell), or they needed a half hour comedy (A couple of the Wednesday shows). This, of course ignores the "fatigue" of repeating repeats(yes, I know what I said ). I'm actually surprised CBS has run as many as they have the last two years. Next week will be the last for the full ratings posts, as almost all the fall-winter shows are done, and next week will be the final week for any new TBBT ratings, the final Live + 7. News, Notes, and International Ratings for Week 35, Week Ending 29 May, 2016 There were a couple of questions this week. The first is from mirs1: Quote Quote @Tensor, can I ask you a question? Is it just my impression or the gap in Demo between Empire and TBBT has been decreasing a lot during the second half of the season? It has. TBBT has been between 3.0 and 3.5 since daylight savings time started, and every week, it has added a 2.0 for it's live + 7 demo. Empire debut in the spring (on March 30) with a 4.8 and it's lost a point to the upper threes (except this last week it was at 4.1). Most of it's Live + 7 has been in the upper ones (1.8-1.9, with a 2.0 in there). So, its been more of Empire dropping. In the fall, Empire debut with a 6.7 demo, and fell two points to a 4.5 for its final fall show. Here's an interesting fact, Empire, on the Wednesday before the US Thanksgiving Holiday had a 3.2 demo with a new episode. TBBT, the next day, on the Thanksgiving holiday, had a 3.2 demo, WITH A REPEAT of 9.01 The Matrimonial Momentum. Two similar questions and/or comments, first from Jonny83 and then a comment by SRAM: Quote Quote So television viewing figures have been pretty much dropping on a whole? Modern Family seems to have seen a major drop as well. Still it must be seen as a positive to CBS that a show that has been going for 9 seasons appears to be holding up pretty well compared to the competition some of which is much younger and perhaps seen as more fresh. Quote Could the lack of drop be because of a loyal fan base. I don't think you can consider the show pure comedy, I think people sort of get invested in these characters lives, they wanted to see Lenny get married, when Sheldon and Amy got physical, and are looking forward to the Shamy marriage, maybe even want to see them all have kids, houses and Nobels. Overall Broadcast Television viewing has been dropping at around 11%, per year, since around 2000. It is a positive that although viewership has been dropping, it's ratings, relative to other current shows, is still higher than all but one show, and higher than all comedies. Part of the reason is TBBT fan base is spread out (and probably loyal). For instance, if we go back to last week, Empire had a 3.7 demo, with about 4.7 million demo viewers. TBBT had a 3.4 with about 4.3 million demo viewers. What we don't normally get, is the break out for the other demos. 18-34, 25-54, 55+. What information I have gotten is a large part of the 18-49 number for Empire is because it has a strong 18-34 demo. TBBT has more viewers in the 35-49 part of the demo, which is why it almost catches it, in the 18-49 demo, behind by only three tenths. Now, lets look at the actual viewers. In demo, Empire had 4.7 million and TBBT had 4.3 million. But, in total viewers, TBBT had 14.7 million versus 9.8 million for Empire. For Empire, 5.1 million came from outside of the 18-49 demo. For TBBT 10.4 million came from outside of the 18-49 demo. While TBBT has slightly less viewers than Empire, in the 18-49 demo, it doubles the number of viewers in demos of 49+. Those older viewers are more inclined to watch TV in the traditional way. At a specific time, on a specific night of the week, when it is broadcast. This helps TBBT, in the Live + Same Day numbers, but should hurt them in Live + 7. The big demo for Empire, the 18-34, watch more TV in less traditional ways. Streaming, or recording it on a DVR and then watching it when they have the time or inclination. That hurts the Live + Same Day numbers, but should help them in Live + 7. However, TBBT also leads almost every week in demo point increase, and viewer increase on Live + 7, which means TBBT also has a large base in those younger demos that record and watch. In fact, TBBT gains more demo points and more viewers than any other show, generally. It was the number one gainer in demo and viewers this past Live + 7. It finished second to Empire in total demo, but beat it be over five million total viewers. And it finished second to NCIS in total viewers, but beat it by 2.2 total demo points. And finally, a question from Lady in Red: Quote Quote Is there any indication that the extensive syndication of TBBT helps in the ratings for new episodes? It seems to me that most shows in syndication do not have new episodes showing as well. I'm thinking that new viewers may find the show in syndication first since it's everywhere, then migrate to watching the new episodes. You could make a case for it back in season four, five, and six as the reason for, first, it not falling very far, with the move to Thursday. Second for increasing in season five and six. Not so much since then. The first I don't have data for, but in it's second year in syndication it was near number one. TBBT was close to number one in syndication (and it was number one, in syndication, in it's third year, the same year (season six) TBBT finished as the number one non-sports show on any network). During season seven and eight, it dropped to around third, and most of this year it's been in fifth. While it has dropped to fifth, the shows above it are all game shows or Judge Judy, with new content almost every night. TBBT is much higher than any of the rerun syndicated network series--as a matter of fact most weeks, the weekend edition of TBBT beats the weekday edition of Modern Family. But it is still down from its first two years of syndication. Return to Archive Index.

The pregame show had a 2.1 and a 9 share, with 6.27 million viewers. For non-sports shows, in demo, number one for the night was TBBT. In second, at 1.2 was a tie between a new episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live:Game Night and a repeat of Life in Pieces. For viewers, number one was the TBBT. In second was Life in Pieces with 5.52 million and in third was Mom, with 5.19 million. In viewers, Jimmy Kimmel Live:Game Night had 4.47 million viewers. Mom had a 1.0 in demo. Tensor
Season Ratings Recap 22 June, 2016 Ratings recap for Season 9 (2015-16) of The Big Bang Theory Quote Hey all, in this post, I'll recap the ratings for season nine. Total broadcast viewing was down 13% this year, so remember that as we go through the various ratings. I'll begin with the Live + Same day ratings. TBBT averaged a 3.73 in the 18-49 demo, with 15.25 million viewers. These are down 14% for demo(4.32 last year), and down 6% in viewers (16.15 million). However, this still was good for number two in both demo, to Empire (at 4.42) and viewers, to NCIS at (16.61 million) I don't have last years Live + 3, but for this season TBBT averaged a 5.4 demo, with a 1.7 gain. This was second to Empire in total demo, and tied with Empire for the highest demo gain. In viewers, it averaged 19.49 million viewers, with an average gain of 4.27 million viewers. This placed it second to NCIS, at 19.57 million viewers, only 80,000 viewers ahead. It's gain of 4.27 million was the highest of any show, and the only show to gain more than four million viewers in three days. For Live + 7, TBBT averaged a 5.8, with a 2.1 gain. This was again second to Empire in total rating (at 6.6) and tied with with Empire in highest gain. In viewers, TBBT Averaged 20.59 million viewers, with an average 5.36 million viewer gain. This moved TBBT past NCIS (20.54 million) as the show with the most viewers for a non-sports show. Its average gain was the highest for any show during the year, and the only show to gain an average of more than five million viewers. This was down 11% in demo (6.50 last year) and only 3.5% from last year in viewers (21.28 million). So, for demo, TBBT was down about the same amount as broadcast viewing fell. However, both in Live + Same Day and Live + 7, viewing was down around only 5%, much less than the amount broadcast viewing was down. The average 7 day demo increase of 2.13 was down 6% from last years 7 day increase (2.28) For viewers, the 7 day average increase was at 5.33 million, which was actually up 1% from last years increase (5.27 million). For Live + Same Day, the highest individual show demo was a 4.7, for 9.01, The Matrimonial Momentum, on 21 September. It also had the highest number of viewers at 18.20 million. The low demo was a 3.0 for 9.23, The Line Substitution Solution on 5 May, 2016, which also had the lowest number of viewers at 13.22 million. The highest 7 day increase was demo increase was 2.9 for 9.11, The Opening Night Excitation, on 17 December. It also had the highest viewer gain at 7.17 million. This is the only time 7 day DVR viewers have increased by more than 7 million. The smallest increase was a 1.9, which occurred two times. The smallest increase in viewers was 4.80 for 9.18, The Application Deterioration. The highest total demo was a 7.0 for 9.11, The Opening Night Excitation, on 17 December, which also had the highest 7 day number of viewers with 24.40 million viewers. The lowest 7 day demo was 5.0 for 9.23, The Line Substitution Solution on 5 May, 2016, which also had the lowest 7 day total viewers at 18.21 million. Tensor. Final 2015-16 Live + Same Day Broadcast Rankings. Quote This post will look at the final Live + Same Day Rankings for the year. For those familiar with my weekly ratings posts, this means it will be very similar to my Tuesday Weekly Rankings, except I will be doing the top 15 here. The following lists contain the top 15 non-sports shows for the year. For comparison, the two prime time sports shows Sunday Night Football and Thursday Night Football had the following ratings and viewers. Sunday Night Football had a 7.5 demo, with 21.30 million viewers. Thursday Night Football had a 5.7 rating, with 17.02 million viewers. You will notice that this would make these two programs one and two for the year in both demo and viewers. If you combine the nights in the fall, The Voice has a 2.9 demo in the fall, and a 2.35 for the spring. If you combine both nights, and the spring and fall, The Voice had a 2.6 demo for the season. American Idol had a 2.25 demo for both nights. The two nights for the spring would have had, 10.67 million. For the entire year, it averaged 11.44 million viewers. Dancing With the Stars averaged 11.85 million viewers over it's fall and spring shows. Tensor Final 2015-16 Live + 3 Day Broadcast Rankings. Quote This post will look at the final Live + 3 Day Rankings for the year and will follow the weekly Live + 3 ranking posts, except it will be the average for the year for the shows listed. For comparison, the two prime time sports shows Sunday Night Football and Thursday Night Football had the following ratings and viewers. Sunday Night Football had a 7.5 demo, this was no change from the Live + SD ratings. For viewers, it pick up 81,000 viewers to rise to 21.38 million viewers, from 21.30 million. Thursday Night Football had a 5.7 rating, the same as it's live + SD. For viewers, it rose 98,000 viewers to with 17.12 million viewers, up from 17.02. This keeps Sunday Night Football as the number one show in demo and viewers, but Thursday Night Football drops to third in ratings (behind Empire) and to fourth in viewers, behind NCIS and TBBT. This is because the nature of the competition show drive people to watch when they are on (mostly due to voting), not watching them during later playback. Note, TBBT is the only show to increase it's viewers by more than four million viewers. Again, I've added a +/- column to see how the the three day increase changed the shows ranking in total viewers. Tensor Final 2015-16 Live + 7 Day Broadcast Rankings. Quote This post will look at the final Live + 7 Day Rankings for the year and will follow the weekly Live + 7 ranking posts, except it will be the average for the year for the shows listed. For comparison, the two prime time sports shows Sunday Night Football and Thursday Night Football had the following ratings and viewers. Sunday Night Football remained at a 7.5 demo, this was no change from the Live + SD ratings. For viewers, it pick up 91,000 viewers to rise to 21.48 million viewers, from 21.30 million. It only picked up 10,000 more viewers from the Live + 3 viewers. Thursday Night Football had a 5.7 rating, again, the same as it's live + SD. For viewers, it rose 104,000 viewers to with 17.18 million viewers, up from 17.02. This was a gain of only 6,000 more viewers from the Live + 3 numbers. The large lead it had with it's Live + Same Day rating kept Sunday Night Football as the number one show in demo and viewers, but Thursday Night Football drops to fourth in ratings (behind Empire and TBBT) and and remained in fourth, in viewers, behind NCIS and TBBT. You'll note that TBBT overtook NCIS in the Live + 7 to become the non-sports show with the most viewers. Empire also overtook NCIS:NO for third. The X Files was not on the list for either Live + SD or Live + 3, but made it here. The show that dropped off was Little Big Shots. Tensor 2015-16 Comparisons Quote This final post will look at some comparison between the last three years of the show, and some a few other broadcast shows. Those will be Empire, NCIS, and Modern Family. I chose those three as TBBT finished second in demo to Empire, second in viewers to NCIS, and Modern Family is the second ranked comedy. But first, I'll compare season 6, (2012-2013), season 7 (2013-2014), season 8 (2014-2015) and this year, season 9 (2015-2016) with how broadcast viewing faired during that season. For Live + Same Day Season Demo +/- Viewers (millions) +/- Broadcast Viewing Season 6 5.25 - 16.80 - -10.9% Season 7 5.07 - 3.5% 17.69 +5.2% -10.6% Season 8 4.32 -14.8% 16.15 -8.8% -10.7% Season 9 3.73 -13.7% 15.25 -5.6% -13.7% Total -1.52 -29% - 1.55 -9.2% -35.0% A few things stand out. The demo has dropped since season 6 (Season 3 was the highest demo with 5.26). It's dropped a total of 29%. Viewers went up in season 7, but overall, since season six, viewers have fallen much less, only 9.2%. While broadcast viewing has dropped by 31%. So while TBBT has fallen, it is falling less than overall Broadcast viewing. This year, demo dropped by the same amount that broadcast viewing dropped, while viewers fell less than the overall broadcast decline. Also note that while demo and viewers increased in season 6, broadcast viewing dropped by almost 11% For Live + 7 increase Season Demo +/- Viewers (millions) +/- Season 6 1.98 - 4.24 - Season 7 2.49 +25.7% 5.55 +30.9% Season 8 2.28 -8.5% 5.47 -1.5% Season 9 2.13 -6.6% 5.33 -2.6% As you can see, there was a big jump between season six and season 7, and with a drop the next two seasons in demo. However, it has not dropped as much as the increase in season 7 The drop, for viewer lift, is basically nothing. As viewing habits have changed over the time period here, notice how the number of viewers watching on a DVR, increases by more than a million viewers from season six. For Live + 7 Season Demo +/- Viewers (millions) +/- Broadcast Viewing Season 6 7.00 - 20.34 - -10.9% Season 7 7.55 +7.8% 23.24 +14.2% -10.6% Season 8 6.50 -12.6% 21.42 -7.9% -10.7% Season 9 5.86 -11.3% 20.58 -4.0% -13.7% Total -1.14 -16.3% +0.24 -1.2% -31.0% The live + 7 numbers are a little murkier. Remember, broadcast viewing dropped 31% since season 6, but the show has only fallen 16% since season 6, and the number of viewers has actually gone up since season 6 (although down the last two years). This is why I keep mentioning that the show, while it is falling, is falling less than Broadcast viewing in general. To show this, lets compare those four shows I mentioned at the beginning. Demo Live + Same Day (Broadcast viewing dropped by 13.7%) Show 2015-16 2014-2015 +/ Empire 4.42 5.09 -14.3% TBBT 3.73 4.32 -13.7% Modern Family 2.55 3.19 -20.1% NCIS 2.21 2.43 -9.1% Note that NCIS didn't drop as bad. Viewers Live + Same Day, in millions)(Broadcast viewing dropped by 13.7%) Show 2015-16 2014-2015 +/ NCIS 16.61 17.24 -3.7% TBBT 15.25 16.15 -5.6% Empire 12.97 11.46 -11.7% Modern Family 9.41 7.92 -15.9% Overall, you can see that for Live + Same Day, Modern Family didn't have a very good season. Finall, Live + 7 demo (again, broadcast viewing dropped 13.3%) Show 2015-16 2014-2015 +/ Empire 6.6 7.1 -7.1% TBBT 5.8 6.5 -10.8% Modern Family 4.4 5.3 -17.0% NCIS 3.1 3.5 -11.6% Seem that NCIS didn't have a bad year, as far as losing audience. TBBT was still better though, in both demo and viewers. I have to stress though, that even though Modern Family is almost 1.5 points behind TBBT, it is still in third, as far as demo goes for non-sports shows. Finall, Live + 7, total viewers (in millions) (again, broadcast viewing dropped 13.3%) Show 2015-16 2014-2015 +/ TBBT 20.59 21.42 -3.9% NCIS 20.54 21.18 -3.1% Empire 16.24 17.33 -6.3% Modern Family 12.18 14.13 -13.9% It's clear that the 18-49 demo is dropping faster than the total viewers. While Empire dropped less in demo, than TBBT, it dropped more in viewers. Tensor Return to Archive Index.
