Chrismo Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Was not impressed with the episode. I did like the fact that Sheldon and Leonard were working together as equals. And Michael Rappaport was entertaining but under-utilized IMHO.The rest of the gang with the dating app - sorry my grandchildren act more mature than they did and the oldest one is 9. I'm not going to get into the whole SHAMY breakup because this is just filler until they get back together. But I thought it was wrong how they acted. For people who got picked on (well maybe not Bernadette and Penny) they have no problem making fun of others. As Sheldon said they are too old for that crud...Actually your being kind. That was truly an awful episode. The helium bit was just corny. Like A Saturday morning cartoon. The dating app bit had a couple of laughs but lasted way too long. Leonard & Sheldon were hilarious- loved how Leonard completely disarmed Sheldon with the soften the blow complements! The scenes with Michael Rappaport were so fun to watch and that he ended up in 4A was a tremendous ending. The banter during the dating app was fun as well. You can tell that they all had quite a few beers. Good for Amy testing the waters. Of course in the end she will know where her true companion lies, but it has been fun so far on that road to knowledge for them both. Absolutely in love with season 9. Can't wait for more. I'd add that our two geniuses did not come across as very bright in this episode.I did learn a few things about commercial sources of helium after the TR (google is great) so I still got something out of this. This is an episode that I doubt I will seek out and only watch it again if it just happens to come on while I'm tuned to a channel. I especially found the Mexican standoff conversation funny. I always enjoy seeing Kripke, so I liked those scenes. Liked that at least on the Sheldon/Leonard front it wasn't a relationship driven episode.I am so sick of Stuart. Why is he in every episode now? Ugh. I thought at the beginning that Amy was reluctant about the dating app, because she wasn't quite ready to start dating yet, and would do so on her own terms. I hated all the gang mocking Amy's dating life, right in front of her. Kind of came off as mean girls...But it seems Amy is doing just fine on her own. 3 different dates already? She really hasn't shown that she misses Sheldon at all. Just that she was upset that she thought he moved on last week. What was Sheldon? Her training boyfriend? Really feeling for Sheldon now.... However, I wasn't really feeling tonight's episode. I hated how mean spirited the dating stuff was. I get that is what many people are like with those dating apps and maybe the writers were trying to comment on that but these characters are meant to be misfits and here they just came off as super mean and judgemental. I hope this was just a blip before resuming normality! I thought the Leonard and Sheldon plot was stronger (particularly the etymology discussions) but not up to the comedy of the van episode or the fencing episode :-( Here's hoping for more laughs next week. phantagrae Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 I missed the first half of the episode because I was getting my oil changed and lost track of the time.But I did see the part where they were playing the drinking game with the dating app. Even though it was somewhat mean-spirited, I think it kind of highlights a couple of things. A like/dislike site like that does bring out the superficially judgmental side of most people. You're not even looking at their information, just their looks. Such sites are meant to be superficial--or to appeal to the superficial streak in all of us. And I think it also shows that we can ALL be shallow and judgmental. Just because the nerdy guys have been on the short end of that stick doesn't mean that they're going to be saints about it. Think about all the girls that Howard, Raj, and even Leonard were drawn to--they all wanted hot girls. I'm re-watching Panty Piñata and all the guys, except Sheldon, of course, are drooling over the models in the model house. They're not looking for the Americas Top Female Nerds house, or wondering about the girls' intellects or even personalities. And I think it's also part of the group mentality. Once someone starts down that road and says something that seems funny, then it's much easier to join in and let it go too far. But I thought them finding Stuart in the mix was pretty funny.I missed the beginning of the helium conversation, but did see Leonard and "Skippy" going back and forth over whether or not to buy it from the guy. I did like how he ended up at their apartment getting ready to watch "Earnest Goes To Jail"! I'm hoping to watch it again soon. Seeing as I am more of a fan of the older episodes, that really felt a lot like these plots to me. Some focus on science and no tedious break-up drama.Well, for one half of the plot, that was. The other half was... eh. I do agree with phantagrae, though, that I think it does make a point about the childish group mentality we can all be dragged into from time to time. And to be honest, at least they made me laugh, albeit in a mean-spirited kind of way. Can't say the same for Amy. Is it just me or have they normalised Amy so far that she barely seems like a sitcom character this season? She was almost too straight even for a straight woman (Penny and Leonard have way funnier reactions). I think it's because she constantly sounds so subdued and always looks a little mournful these days. I liked the phallic cookies joke, the deadpan "I'm gonna kill him" after Fun with Flags and then there was the shame closet (a line Penny delivered instead of her), that's about the only funny things I can think of her doing this whole season. Which really sucks, Bailik can do much better and Amy used to be funny back in memetic herb garden times. Even in the later seasons she at least had the (somewhat stale) desperate-for-sex jokes. How they started to analyze the transfer situation and the way the contact to the helium dealer developed. I had two really big laughs one after the other: Kripke going backwards for the dramatic effect and the third encounter with the helium dealer as answer to Leonars saying "what other option do we have?"I didn't like the dating app plot. First it was funny to hear the gang mocking the people on the app, but very very soon my smile froze and I found it really mean. Amy nowadays is damned to feel uncomfortable, speak little and make an unhappy face. Which I think is due to the fact that her behaviour isn't logic but required for the writers purpose to drag out the break up plot without a focus on Amys reasons/development.Edit: I forgot to say: I kinda started shipping Shelnard. Okay this ep from what I have read doesn't sound its strongest. Shows in its 9th season, it is a struggle to remain fresh and interesting every week, we have seen it al before. Consistency prob not their anymore. But I have seen enough of S9 to suggest, this is going to be a season that revitalizes Big Bang back to life, fresh new storylines is what it needs, and it is happening. So you can publish a physics paper (in theoretic physics actually) about a theory if the theory is mathematically coherent (everything is in the right places), but until an experiment says that what you are thinking has a "real world" counterpart, i.e. it describes for real the phenomenon you thinks it describes, it is just a theory, it may or may not be true as a description of that phenomenon. This is one of the reasons for which Sheldon left string theory...it is a very rich and beautiful mathematical theory (even if not really complete at this point) for describing the universe, but up to now no experiment could tell if it describes the universe or not. Actually, Sheldon as a theoretical physicist should be concerned more about the mathematical\theoretical aspect of their joint work...Leonard is the one who should set up the experiment for proving it, so in some sense the Swedish team is stealing Leonard's work...
