'The Positive Negative Reaction' - Season 9, Episode 16

When the gang finds out about Bernadette's pregnancy, they celebrate by singing karaoke. Also, Bernadette is concerned when Wolowitz freaks out over her pregnancy announcement, and Wolowitz is convinced he must make more money to provide for the baby.

Reminds me of an old joke : 'My doctor told me to give up smoking. I'm changing my ways.'

'My doctor told me to give up drinking. I'm changing my ways.'

'My doctor told me to give up sex. I'm changing my doctor.'

And Sheldon's ironic question about how they're going to do all those childish things with a child around takes me back to when my age was in single figures and I was rent-a-niece. I lived within yards of a beach and thought nothing of it. The teachers even took us there for lessons. However, when aunts and uncles came to stay they would take me into town to do all the children's seaside stuff : bingo, hoopla, bucket and spade, sandcastles, donkey rides, fairground, candy floss, ice cream, slide, roundabouts,big wheel, caterpillar, miniature railway, etc. At the time I thought it was all to give me a treat. I'd been grown up for years before I realised I was the excuse for the adults to have fun.

I liked it! It didn't quite play out like what I thought the taping info said, but I liked it just the same. It had lots of funny stuff.

I hate to admit it, but I laughed hard at this episode.  The singing was so bad, it was really funny.

For me, it was Howard's episode. And his song to Bernadette was just wonderful!

Good episode! Howardette were so sweet! Both Simon and Melissa were hilarious! Karaoke scene was also funny! Liked how the whole gang was included. Looks like Howard, Leonard, & Sheldon figured out a way to make more $! Sweet Lenny scene in tag. And nice artwork done by Dr and Mrs H on Sheldon's face!

That was a very cute episode!! Felt so rushed though!  maybe it's just because after reading TRs I know what's going to happen so it just flies by. 

Omg they're all such terrible drunk singers I was in tears laughing! Raj and Leonard were my favorites  

and regarding the 9.17 promo: Big Bang Theory, I love you, but you copied 30 Rock's Adam West joke...! (he gets invited to a birthday party and says the wrong name)

Tonight Episode was very fun to watch. I am glad we finally got a group episode. There hasn't been one in awhile. It was very funny especially the karaoke part.

I loved the episode, but watched it with my friend and she was shocked how much they changed what she saw taped.  She said they took a lot of the seriously funny stuff out so they could add that recap at the beginning.   She also was disappointed they took out the scene with Sheldon tapping the chair next to him for Amy when she arrived at the bar.   She said Amy was so much funnier at the taping than what they showed.  It was clear that they wanted to focus it on Howard's reaction and play down any characters that would upstage Howardette (which I can sort of understand).   But what a shame to loose some good moments.   It still was a great episode though and funny even though their best scenes were supposedly cut.   Also I loved the song with Howard singing to Bernie at the end...so sweet.

The karaoke was clearly the highlight of the episode.   So funny!

I still think this episode had pretty good use of all the cast (more than next week even, based on TRs).   But then again there are not six extra guest stars.  Makes me nervous for the 200th.   With all the commercials, I am expecting it to come across quite choppy.

I'm so excited for Howardette's baby!    It's good to see everyone acting normally and IC to the realization their lives are about to change.  I can understand Bernadette being disappointed that Howard wasn't more excited when he was the one who talked her into considering children.   Howard's concerns about religion, circumcision, etc. were all valid.    I think he is going to be a good father.

The celebration at the Polynesian bar was so much fun to watch.

Melissa's acting was superb portraying Bernadette's disappointment over not being able to do anything now she is pregnant.  I enjoyed the girls' conversation and Amy being able to excitedly join in on the sex talk.   I got the impression that Shamy have not waited until the next birthday by Sheldon initiating the comment about the vasectomy and Amy telling Penny she knew what it was like for one thing to lead to another.

I got a little ick factor that Howardette had sex on Sheldon's bed with Sheldon right there in the living room.    However, I cringed even more when I heard Penny refer to 4A as "our" place.    So, I guess 4B is their vacation spot?

I enjoyed Amy calling Penny out on why the hot tub was out but the drinking wasn't and Penny referring to Bernadette not having the Christ child.

I loved drunk Sheldon still being smart and his positive remarks to Howard about being a good father.    It's nice to see him actually trying to have a good time celebrating rather than spoiling the party.     Amy knowing Sheldon was wasted due to incorrect punctuation in his text was absolutely hilarious!

I laughed the hardest when Leonard and Raj were singing Bust-a-Move and Sheldon was getting all into it.

This was a good episode, although it didn't play out like I thought it would after reading the TR.   For one, Sheldon did not seem as flirtatious with Amy as I had hoped.    I saw him wave at the group when they came in, but I missed him motioning for Amy to sit next to him.    I thought the wink last week was more prominent than the one he supposedly gave this week.

I'm glad Amy stood by her man and told Sheldon what Howardette did.   Amy's reaction that Sheldon's outburst was warranted filled my heart with warm fuzzies.    Them against the world.    That's what I want to see more of.

I didn't really like the end with Lenny having drawn all over Sheldon's face.   I wish the writer's would stop portraying Sheldon as their child and Lenny in his kitchen.   It would have been better if Sheldon were sprawled out on the couch and Lenny were in 4B discussing their future with babies.

Agree with your post!   And most of all you should have seen my friend and I cover our ears when the "our place" line came up.  It made her cringe every take at the taping and I knew it was coming...so when we saw it, it just comes across very cringeworthy!   Ugh!  Just no!  

 

Oh and yes they changed that flirtatious part of the girls entering.  Instead he now turns around and waves at Penny  (which annoyed her (and me) some because it took such a precious Shamy moment away, since you could tell he was waiting and watching for Amy to arrive and now it comes across like he is waiting more for Penny to arrive than Amy).   Then as he is turning back around he slaps the chair next to him, but it wasn't at all as if he was doing it to Amy to come sit next to him.   My friend said that was the part that disappointed her the most...that change.  It was so much better at the taping because when the girls arrived, he looks directly at Amy, pats the chair next to him several times and has a huge smile on his face that she came.   Instead they ruined that part with whatever they used.  She said not once did she see that taped that way so it must have been taped over or taped on Monday and they used something from that.   But what a shame and a disappointment.  Needless to say I am very disappointed as well.  What she described she witnessed sounded so much better.  Maybe some of the others that attended might recall more.

I thought this episode was just okay.  Not a lot of laugh out loud moments for me.  I found the karaoke scenes and drunk Sheldon to be the funniest.

I wonder if they cut the scenes in order to do a recap in the opening.   However, I did not think the recap was necessary.  The prior episode aired last week with no hiatus.    To me it was a waste of airtime that could have been spent on the scenes that were cut.

Penny ruins Bernie's pregnancy announcement to the girls.  She couldn't read it and shut up, let Bernie have her moment? Nope.

Bernie and Howard having sex on Sheldon't bed.  No, just no. Sheldon has some really awesome friends.  How considerate of them. 

Penny and Lenard in the tag, really...your drunk friend deserves this from you.  If Sheldon did this to Penny, people would be screaming. 

I loved smart drunk Sheldon. I love Amy feeling like "one of the girls now" high fives all around. The rest, <sigh> didn't do it for me.

Not a keeper for me.

I do think the recap definitely impacted the overall version and agree it was entirely not necessary.

Totally agree about Bernie's moment being fizzled because of Penny.  That really annoyed me.   And she didn't even apologize, but just asked how they wanted to handle it.   I mean that was ridiculous and shows how the writers are so inconsistent.   She couldn't wait to blab gossip on her phone, but never told Amy about the ring?   Such inconsistency.   But what troubled me most is that Bernadette deserved to be able to tell things herself and share her news herself, not interrupted from Penny who is reading it from Leonard on her phone.  That felt cheap to me and the writers really don't understand how important that is to a woman or they would have never done that.

Also wasn't happy they chose to have Sheldon's bed be "soiled" with the conception story coming from his bed.  

I think instead of the tag scene they used, it would have been better to have cut that tag scene altogether and instead put back in some of the better scenes that were cut and have the tag have been Sheldon interrupting at the karaoke bar with his line about "what kind of maniacs...."  That would have been a great place to have ended the episode.   While it was supposed to be a sweet Lenny moment, it just didn't play out well enough to make it worthy of keeping and as you said it was annoying that they drew all over Sheldon's face.   

But the most annoying factor of all to me was her calling the boys apartment "our" because it still is Sheldon's apartment.   She is living there temporarily supposedly so her taking ownership of it was annoying.   

I still say the good far outweighed the bad on this one though.  I felt that the karaoke (bad singing, yes, but sweet friendship moments) was worthy and for the most part the guys scenes and the girls scenes were good.  It was well done and good use of the cast otherwise.

So your main issue is there wasent enough Shamy?? It was Howerdettes episode and it was a very good one other charectors deserve the spotlight to from time to time

1. I think Bernie will be okay. Didn't Bernie keep Mandy a secret from Penny for two years?

2. I guess Howdette were the first to have coitus in the bed. Sheldon has always treated Howard with total kindness.

3.Again Sheldon has been always been kind to Lenny. If he had let Lenny live in 4b this wouldn't happen. By the way where was Amy at this time. A concerned girlfriend would of took care of him.

4. Amy "feeling like one of the girls now". She has a long long long ways to go for that.

The  episode was centered around Howdette tonight. Some I'm guessing won't like that. The kareoke was the funniest part. I'm not sure why Amy had to tell Sheldon about Howdette in his bed. Some things are better left unsaid. Overall not the best episode ever but better than one character hogging all the screen time like some previous episodes this season.

No...it was what they chose to put instead.  Shamy were never the focal point and should not have been....but the funniest laugh, according to my friend and a couple of others that went to the taping I have spoken to, was a moment where Bernie is talking about "you know how your man looks and you and one thing leads to another" and Amy looked "dreamy" while still facing Bernadette with a goofy expression and it lasted a couple of seconds....then turns quickly to Penny and says her line....but supposedly it brought very, very loud laughs because of the way Mayim played it.  That was cut.  And it is a shame because it was a very funny moment from all accounts.   Likewise while at the karaoke bar, when the girls arrive, they changed Sheldon's reaction.   Initially in all the takes at the taping, based on feedback from those that went, he looks over at Amy, smiles big and pats the chair next to jim and it is quick but a sweet moment.   Now instead he turns and waves at Penny and then Amy just sits next to him.   The thing is he was the one that wanted Amy to come there and he was watching for her,  so the change didn't make as much sense and fell flat and lost a sweet quick moment between Shamy.  Just like Lenny were given one sweet moment in the tag (albeit longer), the Shamy moment was way briefer, but sweet and now it is lost because of the change.   It isn't that there wasn't enough Shamy.  It never was about Shamy...it was always about Howardette.  But I am not sure why they made the editing decision they made in favor of him waving over to Penny instead.  It just didn't make sense.
