Sheldon Cooper....meet Arthur Fonzarelli!( to be fair Ron Howard/Richie Cunningham did leave the show although the Fonz was already dominating by then - and he started as a bit character in the first season)

But Sheldon was never a bit character.  He was one of the 2 male leads since the  pilot  (i think)

In agreeing with Kasey, that's my point. A character becomes popular way beyond others and the writers gravitate towards them, whether they are the co lead or a bit part. Extra characters don't diminish the screen time of former favourites, the expansion of popular ones do. Ralph and Potsy ( the Howard and Raj of the show) became less important to Richie and Happy Days in general with every "Aaayy" ( the Fonz Bazinga!) and finger click from the Fonz. Ralph disappeared and Postie hung around like a bad........Raj.

All the characters have a role in the show but their stories are secondary to the main story that, since Lenny became permanent, is the growth of Sheldon towards a semblance of normalcy.

The show has evolved since the early seasons when it was based on Leonard's pov. It's now Sheldon centric, you just have to watch the 200th episode for prove of that. They paid homage to Sheldon, not Leonard even though the show has shown the that excluding Amy, the gang only come to 4a because of Leonard and they prefer Leonard more than Sheldon. But we get an episode dedicated to Sheldon who most of the gang have issues with his behaviour and voiced it many time by totally ignoring cannon and is loved by everyone all of a sudden.

Sheldon is the breakout star, no question there, but it's supposed to be an esembled show. Now it's not.

Look we could go back and fourth here. Its been the Sheldon show since god who knows since Season 7 or 8. That ship sailed a long time ago. The show runners decided to popularize the show. By revolving it around one character. That extends to Leonard and Penny, who are still on camera. But the camera man is basically Johnny, Kaley your in Jims way lol. Raj may as well not even be present in the show anymore? What a pathetic waste of space he is, Kunal is so much better then this. What's he done lately, he had a date with a Toilet Cleaner. And made some silly quotes about the baby being a jerk. Walked in, got up went to the Fridge, hmm water or soda. So many choices. Must watch tv!!! We all know the show has evolved. But I have to wonder where this Sheldon narrative is heading, to normacy? They have already wacked all quirks, and uniqueness our of Sheldon, he may as well be Ted Moseby. As for extending the seasons. Multi year? LOL yeah sure. They are barley getting to the finish line of this season. I could Season 11, but anything beyond that. I don't think so.

Well yeah but the recent sitcom before TBBT. Friends yes I am bringing it up again LOL. Never made Rachel or Chandler stand tall. So while their shows have done this. I guess its up to the show runners to make that decision. Which they clearly did. Sheldon is the breakout star of the show. They don't care about balance or consistency, or quality anymore. Other characters stories don't matter anymore. Just their star attraction, and advertisers throwing revenue and money at it.

The show originally was seen from Leonard's point of view. IMO it is now Sheldon's.

Oh totally agree.  I was making more of a generalization about how most shows do center around one person as their MO and all paths HAVE to go through that person or the show will implode or something.

Usually the quirkiest character tends to be the "breakout" star.  And I'm not sure that it was really suppose to be a true ensemble show.  Johnny, Jim and Kaley were always the leads - like a straight line.  Now it's a triangle with Jim at the top and Johnny and Kaley holding the two bottom ends.  Simon and Kunal were the "bit" players and the Melissa and Mayim were added so that bumped up Simon and Kunal in the food chain.  To me, and I could be wrong, an ensemble would be that all were on equal footing from the get go...

Oh yeah I agree technically TBBT was never an ensemble. Friends was, full five cast from the pilot. They decided from the get go to get equal billing, equal salaries, and equal screen time. That does not describe this show hahha. TBBT was always kinda like Three's company. It was centred around Three Characters. Now one more so, and as you said the other two (Johnny and Kaley) holding the two bottom ends. Simon and Kunal bit roles. Then Amy and Bernadette were brought in as supporting roles, in their main function being Sheldon and Howard's other half. Not a Hypotenuse anymore. Which I thought was Season 3 Sheldon and Penny vying for that role, and Leonard mediating. The world of The Big Bang Theory has evolved and changed so much now. Even Sheldon is embracing it. It's a brave new world. The Horror.

Now you put it that way. True. Never saw it as that but it makes sense. Should have said a semi esembled show. Probably a more accurate description. Lol. A true esembled show will be equal screen time for the main 3 in TBBT case.

A couple of points....

Jim Parsons is doing just fine, career wise.  3 Broadway plays, he was the star of 2 of them.  "Home" where he was the lead voice, was in the top 20 highest grossing films in 2015.  He is currently appearing in a supporting role in "Hidden Figures" which, as of today, is the #1 movie in the country, dethroning Rouge 1.  His production company has 4 projects in the pipeline.

TBBT has never been told from Leonard's POV.  If anything it is told from Penny's POV.  CL & BP said from the beginning that the story was about two brilliant minds that lived next door to a beautiful, down to earth girl.  They said that Penny represents us (the audience).  Worldly, street smart, struggling to make a life for herself while interacting with the geniuses next door.  They believed that was the appeal of the show.  We could relate to Penny and can relate to S/L because of her.

Sorry first two seasons were heavily from Leonard's pov. While I agree with you in premise. Penny is the most universal character. Most of the major storylines were seen from Leonard's pov.

And of course Jims doing great. I think that's part of why he well get a good negotiation with TbbT. He does it alone.

And you point is...... we are talking about TBBT, not Jim's success away from the show. He is doing well, good for him. Sorry show was in the beginning from Leonard pov. We knew more about Leonard and even Sheldon than penny from earlier seasons. You probably started watching from S4 so I see why you think it was from penny's pov.

First bold...I am responding to posts made here earlier today with regard to that subject.

Second bold...I have watched the show from the beginning and I am repeating what has been stated in interviews with CL & BP, the co-creators.

And the same people you quote have said also the show revolves around Leonard pov in earlier interviews. The lead credits also goes to Johnny. So yeah. Leonard.

I think the original point was that jim Would probably never have the success as a performer that he has playing Sheldon, just look at the friends cast post show.

Johnny and Kaley had success on TV before but that was as basically kids and as supporting characters, they will also probably never have as big a success as TBBT again at least not in front of the camera. You know lightning striking twice and all that

I believe what you are saying about Jim Parsons.

The bold part is clearly wrong with the word never in there. The Recombination Hypothesis 5.13 is mostly one of Leonard's dreams which can only be from Leonard's POV.

In the early episodes there is a lot of Leonard interacting with Sheldon and Leonard interacting with Penny. It looks like Leonard's POV when we are given so much more insight into what Leonard is thinking than anyone else. I'm thinking of...

In 1.01 Penny is mostly eye candy.

In 1.02 Leonard is clearly caught between his crazy roommate and the girl he is interested in.

Yup. In the first few seasons, the show revolved around the dilemmas that Leonard was facing. Sheldon was merely along for the ride as the annoying roommate. Then Amy came along, and suddenly Sheldon had dilemmas of his own. The show shifted to focus more on Sheldon's issues because the Audience had such a strong reaction to it. It would've been ok if they were able to balance both of the main couples, but Shamy slowly took over the show to the detriment of Lenny.

Excuse me. Where did (anyone here) get that everyone's contract stipulates that they MUST appear in every episode? That's ridiculous for a studio to agree to that. They don't know what's to come in the storyline. I don't believe that they have that in their contracts.
