Detecting emotions with wireless signals

Measuring your heartbeat and breath, CSAIL device can tell if you’re excited, happy, angry, or sad.

As many a relationship book can tell you, understanding someone else’s emotions can be a difficult task. Facial expressions aren’t always reliable: A smile can conceal frustration, while a poker face might mask a winning hand.

But what if technology could tell us how someone is really feeling?

Researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have developed “EQ-Radio,” a device that can detect a person’s emotions using wireless signals.

By measuring subtle changes in breathing and heart rhythms, EQ-Radio is 87 percent accurate at detecting if a person is excited, happy, angry or sad — and can do so without on-body sensors.

Quoting myself because of this Tweet...

Hey, I thought I'd bring this up.   Several of the people that were at the taping were discussing it tonight on twitter. The scene between Raj and Howard after the women left, they were cleaning up and they talk about the possibility of getting together after 30 year, WAS NOT part of the taping.   It appears they recorded it later, then showed it as part of the cut, to get the audience reaction on tape.   You have to wonder if it is related to the negotiations.  And us either there as a plot point for Raj if they get more years, or as part of an ending with a flash forward in the last episode.

I enjoyed the show back in the days. It's lost its roots when it became the sheldon show. All the characters are suffering. Because of it, especially lenny & Raj, so yeah I mostly watch for lenny, howardette and Amy. Sheldon bores me with his 1 billion issues. Nobody is saying roses and sunshine all tbe time. Just realistic storyline. I will take anything than the the crap that lenny are going through now but they have been ignored for too long so to me it's over. I just watch for habit now.

I appreciate where you are coming from...I miss a lot of the old stuff also. What made me really enjoy this show in the beginning was how nerdy everyone was. I loved the science aspect where the guys would do crazy experiments (loved the cornstarch one or Howard and the robot arm). That is not seen very often anymore. They have all changed so much...including voices, laughs...I am not sure the the guys can really be considered nerds anymore really. It is a completely different show. Part of me wishes that Bernie and Amy were not in every episode to allow the guys to hang out more. Or at least less focus on the relationships. Lenny being the exception because they were original cast members. That said I am a total Shamy shipper. I would kill for a good old fashioned laser tag outing or a dungeons and dragons night.or a Halloween episode. They used to love that stuff.

Howard dumps Bernie and runs away with Raj to San Francisco in ep 10.24

Season 11 just cost roughly 48 million less...

Oh, thank you for that! I didn't remember the scene from the TR and I was a bit surprised by it. It makes sense that it can be used as either a new plot for Raj if they get more seasons or as a way to close the show if they don't. I've always thought that one of the way of closing the show could be a flash forward of several years to see how everyone is doing. 30 years seems a reasonable period of time (from a scientific point of view) to see how the guys' career turns out, and they would be old enough to win the Nobel prize at that point, not that there is a particular age for winning it, but, averagely speaking, winners are usually not in their primes. I would like Leonard (and not Sheldon, which would be too predictable) to win it, which is also more likely to happen, because Theoretical Physicists don't win Nobels very often.

As for Raj coming out (and eventually marrying Howard), not sure how I feel about it. At this point it seems pretty predictable. Something like: do you remember that guy that acted like a gay but said he was not gay? Well, it turns out he is actually gay...If there is a build up for that, which doesn't involve the cheap jokes that the writers have always used when referring to the subject, then fine, but if that happens out of the blue, or in a flash forward, I don't think I like it.

Yeah the guys are definately not nerds anymore. They have been deconstructed, to Young Student Professionals. I too miss the gang doing geeky stuff. Loved when the girls even took part. A and B possibly are too involved the show. I mean they don't have to be in every episode. I Would love an episode this season, where the guys go do something off site. You know Bakersfield was one of all time favs from this show. A Plot where the guys are going to a Convention or something. OR do a 24 hour marathon video game. Howard needs a break from the baby or something. OR possibly when the new SW movie comes out or something. They could camp out the movies, to get tickets or something. The Girls could hang out, and reacquaint with their comic books. "You don't know his life!" Still cracks me up to this day.

ETA: I actually prefer they keep Raj single. He kinda deserves it lol. And it's nice having one guy not in a relationship. I always wondered about Howard and Raj. I guess it could be a plotline. OR int he finalie, flashforward 30 years later. Raj and Howard are together ahah. Bernie drops off the baby in the weekends LOL. I still think the series finalie well homage the pilot in some ways. Lenny get their smart and beautiful babies. And I imagine Sheldon saying something like "Okay they aren't imaginary". And then final scene cutting to the hallway. A Hot girl moves in, two guys say Hi, Hi, Hi. And camera fades. All they could go the controversal ending. Leonard wakes up and its all a dream :D. Watch this space.

I just watched tonight's episode before getting the chance to read the latest TR (thanks to the person who so generously provided it!) and it really feels like the last couple of episodes have been setting up for a Lenny breakup and Johnny to be written off the show. Although I'm not a Lenny, I do like Leonard and if one of the 7 chooses to walk, I think I'd have a hard time watching the next season. I'm hoping I'm wrong about this but I can't shake my gut feeling...

The show already ruled out divorce for them. So I would be very surprised. IMO I see no suggestion at all Lenny are anywhere heading to a break up. They arguel, but it never seems serious. And Penny did tell Shamy, were not getting divorced. But thats just my take on it. I mean It's season ten. Lenny have been together nearly 6 seasons now. It might be too late for a break up. IF you hear Johnny and Kaley talk, no way well Lenny break up. OVer their dead bodies lol. In any case if Johnny and KAley sign on for Season 11. Lenny won't break up obviousley.

Johnny and Kaley negotiate as a unit and after the little BTS comment from her (and the look to Johnny) I fear it's more like lenny both ride off into the sunset.

Hopefully we get a send off that drives Sheldon crazy, like Leonard goes to work with Hawking at Cambridge

Thanks, I was wondering about that, too!

I gotta say that scene gave me a really weird feeling... Not necessarily about the possibility of Raj and Howard actually getting together 30 years down the line. lol But there was a vibe about it that made me think they're testing the waters for maybe Raj being bi??? Idk it's hard to explain but usually I mostly cringe when they do these "haw haw maybe Raj is gay" jokes and go too far with him and Howard being a sort of married couple (and maybe there's nothing more to that in the scene?) but it played out really cute and flirty (and maybe that's just because Simon is so great with him??)  and for the first time I actually found myself thinking: Hmmm, if Raj met a cute guy and got flirty scenes with him like that I'd be down with him being bi even after all the terrible jokes in the past. I mean, there are still a ton of pitfalls for the show but I guess I would be willing to give this a chance???

Anyway, so far we haven't gotten a follow up on that idea. The only thing is that Raj is cutting himself loose from his parents' money which I guess could be a good first step in his character development. For the first time in forever I'm actually curious what the writers will do with that guy. lol

But then he would be no better than his own father, leaving Bernadette to raise their child by herself, like Debbie did.

If they wanted to change Raj's sexuality I would be fine with it, but I don't think is any kind of inner struggle going on where his sexual preference is causing his relationships to implode. I haven't certainly seen any signs of that, it would be interesting for sure if they made that a narrative but if they choose to do so they need to carefully set it up IMO.

I kind of saw that 30 year gag as a homage to the times of pre-Bernadette when they were really close well as close as two heterosexual males can be at times lol.

If I hadn't known about the friend intervention in the recent taping I would have been very disappointed with the scenes in last night's episode as it looked like he didn't learn or take in much from the ex girlfriends. But we know his friends kind of stage another intervention. However you can't get your hopes up with character that has had virtually no growth in 10 seasons.

That's why I think making him bi would be a good solution - it wouldn't be a conflict with his past relationships in that the problem was never a question of attraction from his side. But they could build a cute little story with him befriending a guy (maybe as a result of Howard not having much time for him anymore because of the baby or whatever) and after some time it becomes a bit more romantic than he expected. Idk, something like that. Could be cute and funny if they balance it right.

Yeah, it could all just be meant as a cheap gag and just accidentally ended up in "hmm, this could actually be interesting!" territory. But hey, I've seen some other people out there having a similar reaction to the scene so I feel like I'm not completely crazy! LOL

Haha, indeed. They could straddle us with "ugh Raj" again soon enough. Though the latest taping is at least letting him make a step forward so hooray for that!

I think if Johnny goes Kaley goes. As a matter I don't think there is a show without them. As mentioned it earlier there fighting was just a set up IMO of a Sheldon storyline in this and the last episode.

I somehow feel that the opportunity to make Raj bi passed a long time ago with Stuart lol. Raj even told him, all our dating problems will be solved if you were a woman (something around these lines) and you could see Stuart seriously considering. Kevin Sussman did so good in that scene, it was literally just his expression.

Anyways, I'm wondering what they will do for Raj. I keep wishing that he feels fulfilled on his own. He doesn't need to necessarily find a love interest but he wants one.  I personally liked the interaction Kunal and Laura Spencer and Kate Micucci had as Raj, Emily and Lucy. But the latest episode just ruled all of them out.  So we'll see.

p.s. (I love Howardette so I didn't really agree with the 30 years ahead lol. Good laughs but hope the writers don't go in that direction.)

I felt a bit sorry at seeing Laura Spencer for possibly the last time as Emily Sweeney.  I purposely watched the credits in the opening to see if she was there as she had been in the past as a recurring character-she wasn't.  She was my favorite of Raj's love interests....

Would tend to agree.  As in so many other episodes the story arcs are short and many are for only one or two episodes. I just feel they would not break up Lenny at this point in the series after 10 years.  But the possibility does exist that they will leave, not so much for the money aspect but for their storylines. In fact it has been mentioned by Johnny that the writers are trying to assure him of better plots for Lenny.  Kaley has stated that she would like two more years but for this happen the writers will have to come up with better stories for them  And I do agree that there will not be a show without them, especially if Jim Parsons gets more involved in his other interests.

The show will continue in syndication after it ends. A divorce IMO would hurt further viewership. Lenny and Shamy will not be broken up. Howdette/Raj is another story. People are not invested them as they are in the other two couples.

Yeah me too, I looked at her as someone who could help fix him, but the writers sort of ruined her with all the creepy horror stuff she was suppose to be into.
