[Spoilers] Shamy: Season 10

I really didn’t like the Amy Meemaw line but I’m gonna let that one go because I also don’t think it’s consistent with how Amy usually comes across. I’ll take the point of her saying it in a defensive moment of rage. I think she sees Sheldon as quite a catch: didn’t want him to look too sexy with his new hair cut, wanted to show him off at her aunt’s party, thought anyone could fall in love with his face, was nervous about Alex, etc. etc.

I’m not sure Amy was worried only about Ramona. The ketchup line implies that she’s worried Sheldon might actually cheat, not because he’s seeking it out but because he has a stirred up sex drive and can easily be tempted (which is an odd idea to me). That implies a trust issue, but I can also see it as a momentary irrational insecurity that comes when you’re in love and far away and facing a new threat that you’re not used to. To me it seems like something Sheldon and Amy need to work out to have a healthy relationship. I’m away from my husband for work a lot, and I think he’s pretty adorable, but we certainly don’t worry about each other when we’re away. Of course, my husband is more clued in than Sheldon, but it still seems to be something they need to come to an understanding about. It may be as easy as a quick clear the air conversation so they know they are on the same page. Both Sheldon and Amy expressed concerns about this so it seems they need to be clear that they are not going to slip and fall into someone else’s genitals while they are apart.

I think my problem is that I am too fixated on the original Shamy. The uniqueness of them where they only had eyes for each other, and they were both so quirky and weird. I understand that characters change and they progress, but I miss old Shamy. When I would be excited to see him look at her a special way, or watch how close their hands get sitting on the couch or walking up the stairs, when I would spend hours rewatching the SIK. I often wonder if it's me that has changed cause I don't look at these small details anymore or if the show itself has changed.

The unique thing about Shamy is that they do everything in there own special way. I am anxious to see how they handle the proposal in season 11. My trust in the writers is at a minimum so I am running through all worse case scenarios in my head. Here's hoping for some Shamy awesomeness.

They still had only eyes to each other. The difference imo  is they are more involved to each other which makes even better everytime they interact betwen them. They had never kissed so much , but always in their very own passionate way. They had never hold hands so much, touched each other, get closer as they talk to each other, look at each other's eyes as they talk.  Imo and I love shamy since s3. 23 episode , they are even better now but yet so quirky. The difference is their quirkness kind of followed their growth as couple and as individuals.

Imo shamy have matured in best way. All details that made them unique  since they met are still there. But much better because they are more aware now of how much one means to other and they both can truly express their love to each other without any restrain.

I for one couldn't be happier with the writers these days when it comes to Shamy. I already loved what they did with the S9 arc but they really blew even my most optimistic expectations and hopes out of the water with S10. What I love so much is that they managed to retain and even enhance all the things I loved about "old Shamy" like their intellectual love affair of the mind and just how much they get each other and how they actually enjoy spending time with each other while also implementing all the good stuff about "new Shamy" like them having an easier time with the physical side of their relationship and being more affectionate in general. At the same time I feel they got rid of many things that bugged the hell out of me during "old Shamy" times like Sheldon's reluctance to fully embrace this relationship and that awful attitude I was talking about earlier, as well as Amy pushing for that traditional romance she thought she deserved. Those things have been fixed and Sheldon is now all in and even at this most lovey-dovey while Amy is embracing the quirky charm and unique bond they share. And both are enjoying the living hell out of it.

So even though the Ramona plot is not the most original etc. etc. I do trust the writers to give us a satisfying resolution.

he suggested she'd better make up her mind about this "break" cause he'd be her only chance of ever having children cause she was getting old. So yeah, that was really Sheldon at "peak asshole" here. lol

Thank you ! So that's what he was saying.  I finally get why she took that line as insulting enough to make her finalise the break-up. I really didn't make that connection. Of all the reasons I'd thought of for his pointing that out, especially since it was possible they'd already talked about it, that attitude of his didn't occur to me.

lol You're welcome! If you need more scenes explained I'd be happy to help and offer my perspective!

But yeah, I guess one could probably twist what he said into something positive like he wants to have kids with her ASAP and her being indecisive about her silly "break" idea isn't helping, or whatever. But in that particular situation he is framing it as her being dependant on him for having kids cause her eggs have a sell-by date while he has all the time in the world. And then he's doubling down in the next episode with the line about nobody else wanting to invade her southern boarders. So yeah, the insulting part is pretty clear here.

He certainly had it coming.  Good for her.

I like season 4&5 Shamy too. But I must say I also love season 10 Shamy, probably more. Season 4&5 Shamy was unique without a doubt, but they were more like two playmates rather than a couple (well to be exact they really weren't a couple at that time). Their relationship was a balance back then. They shared mutual interests, but beyond that they were more like acquaintances. That kind of relationship may be perfect for the friend zone, but I can't imagine them keeping it if the writers ever want them to be a couple.

As their relationship evolves, inevitably, the imbalance appears. Sadly, the writers chose to focus on the imbalance and magnify it to the extreme. To me the writers handles Shamy poorly in later seasons. Ok in season 6&7, below average in season 8 and first half of season 9, bad the second half of season 9, unbearable in the meemaw episode and the viewing party episode.

Now in season 10, for the first time in years, their relationship is a balanced one. Amy is not a doormat anymore. Both of them are perfectly satisfied. No one is a flight risk. Sheldon learns to be a better boyfriend and Amy learns to stand up for herself. Their relationship reaches a new, better balance. Particularly, I like 1007 and 1019 a lot. It combined the uniqueness of season 4&5 Shamy with the evolved, more loving and human later season Shamy.

As for those small things that used to excite us so much in the past, well you pay close attention, they still exist. Shamy still touch each other and make small eye contacts, we just don't notice those that much anymore because they do things much hotter than that these days lol. Is Shamy not unique anymore because now they do stuff such as kissing and coitus just like any other couple? I don't think so. To me the uniqueness of Shamy never lies in their lack of physical contacts.

As for their proposal, I'm not a big fan of it either. I don't mind Ramona or the kiss. My problem with this proposal is that once again, the writers got lazy. Explaining why Sheldon suddenly wants to propose should have been their job. But now they passed it to us, leaving us coming up with explanations ourselves. They didn't explain why Sheldon had a ring in the first place. And now once again they didn't explain how Sheldon went from "getting kissed by another girl" to "I must propose to my girlfriend right now".

To me one silver lining though, is Amy didn't say yes. Not that I want her to say no of course. But that leaves the writers room for an explanation. They can simply pick one from all the explanations fans gave for crying out loud (wait, was that their intention in the first place?)

No contest for me Season 10 Shamy is what I had dreamed for them (perhaps some things I never thought possible) and then some. The most surprising, shocking in a good way and truly amazing Season they have ever had. Season 10 is what Shamies had been sticking with them through thick and thin and as Jim famously called it the 'glacial pace' to hopefully one day see.

I'll never be able to look at some of the earlier Seasons or Episodes again in the same light, this Season was that special.

The bold would have fitted, to my confused mind, with his apparently off-topic mid-snog question about a TV programme, ie he was making all his future plans based on his expectation of being married. He thought he'd have to share a different television by the time the new series started. His swinish behaviour, including asking his mother to take Amy off her prayer list, it seemed to me was all caused by his sense of being thwarted.  Now with your explanation I'm thinking it's a matter of 'How dare she have doubts, why not simply be grateful to me for saving her from a life on the shelf ? '. However, why he rang Leonard saying Amy had ended the relationship when she'd only asked for time, and why he kept hassling her instead of giving her that time when she'd made it clear she wanted it still puzzle me.

Thank you for your response. I really like the what you say about the difference between early Shamy and now Shamy. The bolded part is a great way to put into words my frustration. Knowing (as fans) about the ring for 2 years and we still don't know what his thought process was, how he came to conclude that he wanted to get the ring, (I mean did he ask his mother for it? did she suggest it? ). These are all things that could be addressed in the premiere, but I have a feeling that they might not. Again though, only time will tell.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that they did the proposal that way so that in the premiere all questions would be answered. I can see Amy not saying yes immediately and wondering about the timing of the proposal. Sheldon explaining what happened back in Pasadena and Amy asking if he did it because he felt guilty. And that's when we get the "real" proposal. A heartfelt matter-of-fact declaration of love from Sheldon. To which she'll finally say yes. This is one of the most logical scenarios I can come up with.

Watching the whole Shamy break up and aftermath, especially Amy's remarks to Meemaw in S9 about destroyed me.  However, after all the events in S10, I can go back and watch those episodes with appreciation, joy, and humor because I know now everything turned out better than ever for Shamy.

Without the breakup, there would be no way to explain Sheldon's evolution into a man so much more willing to expose his feelings and weakness and desire to be molded into what Amy needs for a companion.  He needed a wake up call to "shock" himself out of the false reality he had built around himself believing an occasional play date with Amy was all he needed or wanted.  His homeostasis needed to be threatened to force him to accept that his controlling tactics were failing him, that he wasn't just depriving Amy of the happiness she deserved, but himself as well by not giving into the relationship.  He had to see Amy's value as an intellectual and physical woman admired by other men to truly appreciate what he lost and what she needs.

Amy even had a chance to realize what she walked away from, that it was Sheldon she loved and wanted more than idealized romance.    We see that in the way they reconciled and that they've happily lived together despite the lack of full physical intimacy.   It is more about being with Sheldon than being in bed with Sheldon, although I am relieved they are stepping it up in that department.

.... And Sheldon is still clueless, tactless, self-centered, insulting, etc.   The difference is that Amy doesn't make excuses for his behavior as a woman blindly in love who thinks she has to put up with it to keep Sheldon from taking off.  She is confident enough of his love for her now to stand up for herself and know he will still be there in the morning.  She has the self-respect to pick her battles to accept Sheldon for who he is and yet also let him know when he is crossing a line or being unreasonable.   Whenever Amy has to rip the Band-Aid off, she soothes him with her own brand of ointment that may sting but heals his wounded pride.

Sheldon no longer sees Amy as a doormat but a guide for his continued growth.  It is hard to believe he was once a man who limited the amount of time they spent together as a couple.  To hear him tell Amy he didn't know how he ever made it without her and that it is a comfort to wake up with her next to him every day made me utterly cry with joy.  To hear him actually apologize, take initiative to settle a dispute, and reassure her there are no ulterior motives behind his intentions just brings me delight to no end.  I can forgive his treatment of her in earlier seasons because of the impact all this new development is having on my Shamy feels.

I enjoyed their argument while working on their project together.  Here Sheldon is annoying the crap out of her, and when he even hints they should put their relationship aside for the sake of science, she yells no and calls him a bonehead.   I can forgive her now for the things she said to Meemaw.  Why?  Because her love for Sheldon makes her want to put up with him.    Amy is Sheldon's best shot not because no other woman will want him.  She is convinced no one will ever understand and love Sheldon the way she can and does.  That makes her feel good about herself because she gets him where others don't.   I can't help now but admire her and see her for the powerful and influential women she is.  While it is okay for her to see Sheldon's weaknesses, she becomes defensive when others poke fun of Sheldon, mostly shown by her eye rolls.  Amy is an example of a woman who stands by her man, good and bad.

...and to me that really makes Amy the best gift that Howard and Raj could have ever given Sheldon.  Amy wooed Sheldon all on her own, but they were matched by science.  Although there was a bit of a necessary intermission, it is nice to see them still working on that project together and hopefully doing so forever.

Thank you so much for bright  my morning with this so well writen and insightful shamy post. Shamy has been a such beautiful and heartfelt  love and growth story with all the ingredients in good measure, even the tough ones. I am really happy we have two more seasons to see all projects, hopes and dreams they will make together.  Isnt September yet?

It's not off topic, anything Shamy is on topic here. :)

I think it all comes down to how big an event they actually want to make this wedding should there be one. I think the writers are consciously aware of both a) the popularity of the couple, therefore perhaps an urge to make it something grander and b- the type of weddings they have had on the show in the past. They have all been relatively small events or low key the previous weddings, maybe they might want to do something different this time?

Raj for the part he played in getting them together seems better than Howard the other option, Bernie has proven she can run a tight ship when it comes to a ceremony. I don't see Leonard or Penny doing it despite the close connections.

But that's on the assumption it might be something on a small scale, if they went bigger and grander they could I guess use a guest star in a bigger setting.

Going to be fascinating what they decide. Low key and small vs big and high profile, Shamyesque vs traditional or a mixture of both etc. I could see anything from them getting married secretly and revealing it to their friends to something huge.

'A blank canvas to work with' is a term I probably overuse a lot lol but that's what the writers have here.

This sounds good.

Dave or Stephen Hawking could marry them.

To be honest, the whole trope of having a friend ordained to marry their friends is being so overused now.   I just saw it again in a recent NCIS episode, and I'm over it.

If was nice to see everyone officiating for Bernadette and Bernie officiate over Lenny.

I'd just like to see something a little different with Shamy, but as every one of the gang are ordained, except Howard, it only makes sense for someone in the gang to do it.  Keeps it simple.

I don't think Shamy wedding will be on a much bigger scale than the other weddings in the show. They never have big events or large scenes because of the way the show is taped, in front of a live audience and in a studio, makes that kind of things more complicated to arrange. I think they will do something at the same time old fashioned and quirky, but I don't see a much more "larger" event than Lenny wedding 2.0.

My guess is that Raj will party-plan receptions in California and Texas, perhaps with Bernie helping. I've suggested before that Beverly could attend if they had a quickie ceremony in Princeton, but thinking about this makes me wonder if she could marry them ?

I agree with you but if it wasnt for Sheldon , Amy would still be friendless and alone today.

I think that Sheldon is also the best thing for Amy .  If it wasn't for Sheldon accepting Amy into his social circle( and we know how difficult it was for him to accept people into his social circle) and if it wasn't for Sheldon accepting Amy for who she was in season 4- Leonard, Penny , Bernie and others would have nothing to do with her. In the beginning when all his friends thought she was obnoxious,  he still maintained his friendship with her.

He accepted the change in Amy . He accepted Amy for who she was in season 4 and he accepted her when she became more socialized.  He does accept her looks and personality, to a large extent .  He also worked on his issues with intimacy and sex-thats not an easy thing to do for someone like him.

I also feel like Penny should get credit for how much she accepts Leonard for his looks and personality and how she never asked him to give up his friends for her and fits in nicely with everyone in his life .  despite the show making an issue out of her commitment phobia- she has actually always been loyal to Leonard.

I know the overall narrative is usually how  Amy and Leonard are special,  admirable and just too good and how Sheldon and Penny need to appreciate their impact in their life , but i think Sheldon and Penny deserve atleast some credit too.
